It’s definitely made us who we are today. This passion for the outdoors is something that I wish for our kids and grandchildren to have. Outdoor experiences, both work and play, knock the edges off you. They test you and build resilience. Sometimes this resilience barrier is built so high, when people fall, they fall hard. I know that there needs to be a balance. As I’ve become older, it has become clearer that we have a responsibility to make sure this balance is maintained and protected, and that we must assist so that it can be enjoyed by the future generations to come. For years, I’ve been trying to work out a way of creating a model and method to steward and support 3 key areas: Conservation, Child & Community Wellbeing, and Rural Mental Health. I’ve realised that you can’t do it all on your own, and the more people that are involved, the more effect we will have. The foundation of Our Backyard Trust will create an avenue to look after people and families that work and play in the outdoors. It helps answer the following questions that I had: • How do we provide support to families that are struggling to make ends meet? • How do we provide support to grassroots?

The key purpose of Our Backyard Trust is to be transparent stewards of the collected funds and distribute them in a responsible way to achieve the questions that I had. Our Backyard Trust was registered in 2018. We now have a group of likeminded people that are empowered to govern, by way of a board, the funds that are donated and then distributed into projects that support these 3 key areas. Which jacket should I buy that does it all? I want to use it for hunting and on the farm. (KC) Just like you cannot run a marathon in gumboots, it is important to select the right rainwear for the environment and situation. If you want a heavyduty jacket for the farm, it’s not going to fold up and disappear into the bottom of your pack as a backup when heading out hunting. Every design and performance attribute has its strengths and weaknesses, so you need to ask yourself what is going to match your needs and select the right garment based on what attributes are most important for that specific application

What does purpose-built actually mean? And what does it mean for a hunter? (KC) Every outdoor situation is different and unique. It’s not possible to get one tool for every job, so the first question we always ask ourselves when designing rainwear is: What are the non-negotiables that are going to help maximise the hunting experience? Then we design every detail from the ground up, every technical fabric and every feature are carefully considered. We use real hunting situations and worst-case scenarios to ensure we have our customers covered. The needs of a multi-day hunt in the back country, are very different to an early morning bush stalk. We consider how much is the jacket going to be carried and how much will it be worn? What’s the terrain like? Will the hunter be pushing through wet bush and scrub? Climbing up exposed ridges to get to

the perfect glassing spot? Does the need to dry quickly, outweigh the need for silence? These are all things that keep us constantly searching, testing and innovating.

How does waterproofing a jacket actually work?

What is the difference between a microporous (hydrophobic) and monolithic (hydrophilic) membranes?

(KC) Making a jacket waterproof requires number of components. At Stoney Creek, we don’t think of rainwear in single fabric layers or rated numbers. We look at “waterproofness” as a team effort - much like a rugby team. There is a team of different fabrics, technologies and design that all play an equally important role to be a unified success. DWR coatings and the outer face fabric deniers and densities are the first line of defence. They are not chosen to be waterproof, but to be strong, resilient and prepared to tackle everything that is thrown at them. Next in line is the membrane or ‘the midfield’. The membrane is the waterproof barrier and selecting the right membrane is critical. Stoney Creek only uses high-performing membranes that balance extreme waterproof performance with high levels of breathability and bond strength. But don’t get taken in by big flashy numbers. The membrane may have all the technical skills, but it’s only as good as the team around it. The final line of defence ‘the backs’ includes inner linings and antimicrobial technologies. These are the back-ups and play an equally important role. Focusing on a single player in this finely balanced team can leave you exposed and ultimately your defence will not be up to the challenge. Also, don’t forget your ‘Bench’. Think of the subs as your responsibility to keep the players

(KC) Both membrane types are designed to prevent water from passing through and to allow trapped moisture vapour to escape. But the way they achieve this is very different. Microporous membranes have microscopic pores that are too small for water droplets to pass through, but big enough to allow water vapour exit. This process requires a number of environmental factors. Trapped moisture (sweat, internal water) needs to be converted into water vapour via body heat and air before it can be forced though the pores by a pressure differential. Being wet and damp inside the jacket, and wet and damp outside stops this process and the jacket will “wet out” leaving you feeling damp. Monolithic membranes breathe through a process of absorption and migration - driven by heat and high humidity. Moisture is passed from the inside to the outside of the jacket in a stepping-stone process. When this differential is higher due to heat build up, the process is accelerated. When the heat is lower, the process will slow - keeping you more comfortable. Similar to the microporous membrane, this process is reliant on a natural pressure differential, but the difference is a monolithic membrane is solid and is less effected by dirt and oils that can block the pores in an unprotected microporous membrane.

UNDERSTANDING RAINWEAR

How waterproof is a Stoney Creek jacket? How do I make sense of the rating numbers? (KC) Buying rainwear based on one number created in static lab test is the biggest mistake a lot of people make. The number is a pressure test rating given when forcing water though a patch of the fabric in a very controlled environment. It’s no indication to how the fabric is going perform in the real world or in design of the final garment. Like the fabric ‘team’ analogy - relying on one flashy player (a big number, feature or weight) is not going to guarantee you have everything you need when the going gets tough. The fabric and membranes we have developed offer the optimal balance of waterproofness and breathability and they are backed up with fabrics coatings and treatments that combine to give you market leading performance. At Stoney Creek, we set our own very tough base-line minimum requirements for resistance to water penetration test (JIS L1092:2009 method B) as our guarantee of long-term performance. In our labelling, we use numbers for our minimum standard of waterproof rating rather than a maximum number achieved in a single test. So, if you are wanting to compare two different jackets based on a single number, be sure you understand what you are comparing, and compare apples with apples. Not lemons.

Has something changed in your rainwear waterproof ratings? I was looking at your Glaisnock Jacket last year, and it said 10,000mm waterproof rated. Now it is saying 47,368 mm waterproof.

(KC) At Stoney Creek we believe a jacket is functionally waterproof when you have achieved a minimum standard of 10,000mm of waterhead pressure at any point on the garment. We have always exceeded this number in fabric testing, but because we feel it is misleading to quote this number without context, it has never been our focus to rely on this number. However, based on recent market feedback to give a level playing field we now publish maximum rating (fabric only test) numbers alongside our own Stoney Creek standard minimum rating (complete garment test). It is essential to remember that we don't wear fabrics, we wear clothes. So, you have peace of mind that you have the most purpose-built gear, developed with industry leading fabric, and designed and tested right here in New Zealand.

Is the Stoney Creek waterproof test standardised and accredited? (KC) Our fabrics are tested independently in an SGS certified laboratory to the JIS L1092 (method B) standard. This is a high pressure test that involves a sample of the fabric being clamped over a cylinder filled with water, air is then forced into the cylinder at continuously increasing pressure until a maximum of three water droplets appear on the surface of the fabric. The pressure is measured at this point and the test is repeated another four times. The average of these five results is calculated, and this is published as the fabric waterhead test rating. This test is performed in the centre of a sample of new fabric and is not completed on a garment or on a joining seam.

Why does it feel like I am getting wet inside my rain jacket?

(KC) Stopping the rain from penetrating your rain jacket is just the beginning. Creating a microclimate under your rainwear shell is the key to staying comfortable. Making good decisions with your layers before you are uncomfortable is the best way to perform and stay dry in wet conditions. Discomfort - being too hot or cold is felt as a sensation on the skin, so wearing a wicking base layer is critical. The mid and insulation layers you choose to wear between your base and your outer rain shell, give you the ability to regulate your temperature during the day. Changing your layers before you need to, is an important skill to master. Remove a layer before you push up a steep hill to prevent overheating. Add a layer when you stop moving - so you don’t cool quickly. If your base layer is saturated, change it out for a dry base layer. Doing all of these things will keep your internal microclimate in the right zone and will allow your rain jacket to work to its full potential.

What care should I take with my rain jacket? (KC) Getting the maximum out of your rainwear requires a bit of care. After heavy use, the DWR coating will slowly begin to wear off, removing a layer of defence and leaving the outer fabric exposed. If you find that your jacket becomes heavy when exposed to rain, or your skin feels a bit clammy under the fabric, there's a good chance the DWR coating has worn off, or it has "wet-out." This doesn't mean your jacket has reached the end of its life. It can be rejuvenated by washing and reapplying a re-waterproofing treatment. Removing dirt/ blood and stains and drying the jacket properly after use and before storage is critical. See the Stoney Creek Rainwear Care guide for more details.

BUT RATHER THAN JUST CHOOSING THE HIGHEST NUMBER, OR THE LIGHTEST WEIGHT, WE RECOMMEND CHOOSING THE RIGHT APPLICATION FIRST AND THEN FINDING THE CORRECT BALANCE OF PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES THAT WILL MAXIMISE YOUR EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT YOUR HUNT. HAVING A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR GEAR, HOW IT PERFORMS, HOW TO LAYER ACCORDINGLY, AND HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR GEAR IS CRUCIAL. So why is the insulation layer such an important one for a hunter heading into the hills? (SM) On any given day hunting in remote locations the conditions will range from windy, wet and cold, to exposed, hot and dry with everything in between. A good insulation layer is a key player in your clothing layer team, it is the piece that will give you the protection from the cold and the ability to stay out longer. A good insulation layer will maximise warmth without adding bulk or weighing you down.

What are the common applications hunters will use insulation, and what are the key considerations? (SM) The typical scenario is the hunter will use their insulation at the start and end of the day when the temperature is low, and when they are not as active. During the day your insulation layer will be put on when stopping to re-fuel or stopping to glass etc… The choice of insulation is very tied to the activity level and the expected terrain. The NEW Accelerant Jacket for example is the choice for shoulder season fast and light hunting trips where your activity level is high. Whereas the NEW Ignitor Jacket is your go to puffer when the temps drop, and you are going to spend less time moving. The popular Frostline Jacket covers you for all day warmth and concealment when you are moving all day.

What is the difference between fill weight and fill power? (SM) Fill power (also referred to as Loft Power or CUI), is a measurement of how much volume, measured in cubic inches, that 1 oz of down takes up. To complete the test 1 oz of conditioned down is placed in a measurement cylinder, and a lightly weighted disc is placed on top. The disc is left to slowly compress down,

after exactly 1 minute the height of the disc is recorded as the CUI fill power. The measurement goes from 500 cui to 900+ CUI. The more volume created, the more air is trapped, and the warmer that 1 oz of down is. Fill weight is how much Down in total is inside the garment. The goal is to create space between the cold outside and the warmth on the inside. To add volume, you can do one two things. 1)Keep the same fill weight but add a higher lofting down. This will add no extra weight or bulk but increases warmth. 2) Increase the fill weight of the same down. This will increase the warmth but also increase the weight and pack volume. It is important to know both Fill power and Fill weight of the fill in your jacket to get the true picture of how much insulation you can expect from your garment.

What does hydrophobic down mean? And do Stoney Creek products use it? (SM) Hydrophobic is water hating, (hydrophilic is water loving). Depending on the position of the layer and conditions it is being used in, you want fabrics to be hydrophobic or hydrophilic. In the case of your base layer, you want to remove moisture to keep your skin dry. Hydrophilic properties are key to achieving this outcome. For outer layers that are going to be exposed to moisture from external or internal dampness or rain, it is key to use hydrophobic materials or treatments. All Stoney Creek Insulation garments have hydrophobic treatments to give you ultimate protection and maximise your experience.

What is better – Down or Synthetic fills? (SM) There are pros and cons with both fill types. But the lines are getting more blurred as technology is solving some of the traditional issues. High lofting "goose

down" is still the gold standard for most warmth for weight. However, the Achilles heel of "down" has always been moisture and how quickly your jacket can go from puff to pancake in a rain shower. DowntekTM Hydrophobic treatments, as used in the NEW Ignitor Jacket have solved this issue and put goose down back on top and the number one choice when you want a lightweight, warm, packable insulation layer. Synthetic fills are becoming more like “down” all the time but still cannot match the warmth to weight ratio of pure down. A strength of synthetic apart from not being as affected by moisture, is the ability to avoid compression under load. This has advantages when used as part of a layer system when the inner layer is compressed under the load of a harness or other outer layers. Primaloft® Gold Down Blend used in the NEW Accelerant Jacket is the combination of 70% High lofting Hydrophobic Goose Down and 30% Hydrophobic Polyester synthetic insulation. Warm, packable insulation layer.

Is the Down you use in Stoney Creek products responsibly sourced? (SM) Yes all of the Down we source is from certified responsibly sourced suppliers, this ensures that our down does not come from animals that have been subjected to any unnecessary harm, such as force-feeding or live plucking. It also provides traceability in our supply chain. This includes the down component of the Primaloft® Down Blends used in our Insulation range.

Are your puffer jackets tough? And when is the right time to use them during the hunt? (SM) When you get to the cutting edge of performance and you are looking to maximise your experience, you have to consider all of your gear choices. Things that will give you the advantage and enable you to get to the places you need to be. To do this you need to understand the strengths and limitations of your gear choices. The triangle of needs for our insulation range is 1) light/compact 2) warmth 3) durability. The reality is you can be strong in two areas, but not all three of these properties. So, if you want light/compact and warm it will not be as tough as something that is tough and warm, but this will not be as lightweight … decisions need to be made, you need to ask the right questions. Will I be using this while glassing and back at camp, but will I be carrying this in my pack most of the day? If you want light/compact and warm, then the Accelerant or Ignitor will be your best options. Alternatively, will I spend the day pushing quietly through bush, then moving though low scrub to get close to game? If you answer yes to that you need Warm and Tough, and options such as the Frostline, Stalking Pullover or Long Bush Shirt are good options.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE A LOT OF CONSIDERATIONS TO MAKE WHEN CHOOSING THE MOST APPROPRIATE INSULATION GARMENTS FOR YOUR NEXT HUNTING APPLICATION. RATHER THAN JUST CHOOSING THE PUFFIEST JACKET, OR THE LIGHTEST WEIGHT, WE RECOMMEND CHOOSING THE RIGHT APPLICATION FIRST AND THEN FINDING THE CORRECT BALANCE OF PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES THAT WILL MAXIMISE YOUR EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DURATION OF YOUR TRIP. WHETHER THAT IS A SUB ALPINE DAY TRIP, OR A TEN DAY EXPEDITION INTO BIG ALPINE BACK-COUNTRY WITH LONG HOURS STATIC BEHIND THE GLASS. HAVING A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR GEAR, HOW IT PERFORMS, HOW TO LAYER ACCORDINGLY, AND HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR GARMENTS TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THEM IS CRUCIAL. What role does a Base Layer play in a complete technical layering system for hunters? (KC) The Base layer is an important part of your layer system, it is the layer that will control your comfort level as its closest to your skin, and it’s the sensations that our skin feels that determines whether we’re feeling hot, cold or clammy. The performance of the Base layer can be the difference between being comfortable and uncomfortable. Get the Base Layer wrong and you limit the performance of the layers above it.

What Base Layers should I buy? Cooling or thermal? And during what seasons should I wear them? (KC) The primary role of any base layer is to control the micro-climate next to your skin by moving moisture away from your body. The secondary role relates to either trapping or removing the metabolic heat your body generates. During Summer you want this heat to be able to escape and your body to be cooled through evaporation. Winter base layers should trap the heat, holding it next to the skin acting as your first thermal layer.

Are Stoney Creek Base Layers made from synthetic or natural materials? (KC) If you are choosing an activity where you are going to sweat a lot, like hunting, we recommend wearing one of our purpose-built Base Layers which are made from various synthetic and natural/synthetic blend materials. Performance Polyester absorbs only around 0.4% of its own weight in water and thus dries very fast, while also efficiently wicking moisture away from the skin to spread it on the outside of the fabric where it can be pulled away by evaporation keeping you cool and dry. Cotton fibres are hydrophilic and will soak up moisture and store it in the cellular walls of the fibre holding the damp wet fabric against your skin, therefore in our summer Base-Dry+ products, these are synthetic fabrics. Merino Wool is a natural fibre that

does a better job than cotton of removing moisture from your skin. This is possible because only the inner part of the Merino fibre absorbs water while the outer part which lies against your skin stays dry. Therefore, Merino wool base layers efficiently eliminate the conductive heat loss. However, the dry times, and low durability of Super Fine Merino are potential issues. Merino is thermal and naturally odour fighting, but Polyester is lighter, stronger and dries faster than Merino wool. So the fusion of Merino and Polyester creates the ultimate cold weather base layer, and that is what we use in our Thermal-Dry+ base layers.

My rain jacket seems to be leaking as my cotton shirt is always soaked after wearing my jacket. Why is that? (KC) The capillary action of cotton will pull moisture from the body and hold it in the fabric making your cotton shirt waterlogged. Thermal conductivity of water is much higher than the thermal conductivity of air. If your apparel gets soaked with sweat, your body heat is rapidly transmitted to it through conduction and you lose warmth rapidly. Waterproof breathable rainwear relies on the pressure differential created by warmth inside driving moisture vapour outside towards the cold environment. Because the cotton shirt has robbed your internal micro-climate of this ability, the moisture is able to build up and you will feel wet and cold even if water is not penetrating your outer rainwear layers.

How many base layers should I take with me on my hunting trips? (KC) The sensation of comfort is felt at a skin level, if your skin is wet and cold, you will feel wet and cold no matter what layers you have on top. A dry base layer is the fastest way to return heat into your system, conversely your body will be very slow to heat if you have wet layers next to your skin. Carrying a spare base layer to switch out at appropriate times can be a game changer. Consider at the end of the day how you are going to dry any moisture out of your wet base layers for the following day.

AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE A LOT OF CONSIDERATIONS TO MAKE WHEN CHOOSING THE MOST APPROPRIATE BASE LAYER GARMENT FOR YOUR NEXT HUNTING APPLICATION. RATHER THAN NEGLECTING YOUR NEXT-TO-SKIN LAYER OR CHOOSING FABRICS WHICH MAY NOT PERFORM TO THE CONDITIONS, WE RECOMMEND SPENDING SOME TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE HUNTING APPLICATION FIRST AND THEN FINDING THE CORRECT BALANCE OF PERFORMANCE ATTRIBUTES THAT WILL MAXIMISE YOUR EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DURATION OF YOUR TRIP. WHETHER THAT IS A SUB ALPINE DAY TRIP, OR A TEN DAY EXPEDITION INTO BIG ALPINE BACK COUNTRY WITH LONG HOURS STATIC BEHIND THE GLASS. SISTERHOOD HUNT #1 OF MANY TO COME SOMETHING WILD HAPPENED THIS LABOUR WEEKEND. AFTER MORE THAN FOUR YEARS OF BEING INVOLVED IN DESIGNING THE STONEY CREEK SISTERHOOD RANGE AND CONNECTING WITH INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN IN THE HUNTING COMMUNITY, I FINALLY EMBARKED ON MY FIRST WOMEN’S HUNTING TRIP. I’M STOKED TO SEE JUST HOW FAR THE SISTERHOOD RANGE HAS COME SINCE OUR LAUNCH IN FEBRUARY 2017. AS A DESIGNER, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN DRIVEN BY AN UNWAVERING NEED TO CREATE INNOVATIVE GEAR THAT FUNCTIONS SO WELL, YOU DON’T EVEN NOTICE IT. IT’S BEEN A FANTASTIC JOURNEY SO FAR AND I’M CERTAINLY STILL LEARNING AND INNOVATING.

My first experience hunting was in my early 20’s, when my then-boyfriend invited me to join him and his dad deer stalking in the back blocks of Kingston. While the relationship didn’t last, I’m grateful for the introduction to his world and my love of hunting and the back country has only grown since. If memory serves me, we shot a whitetail spiker that weekend. Rare for that area, I remember his father saying. But it wasn’t just the clean air or the physical and mental act of stalking an animal that stayed with me. The whole experience turned out to be life-altering in ways I couldn’t have imagined. I remember preparing for the hunt a few days before, wondering what on earth to wear. I was pretty green; up until that point I had only shot rabbits with my dad at our crib in Middlemarch. It didn’t take long to discover, back then in 2004, that no New Zealand brand made a specific women’s hunting range. I can still clearly recall venturing into the local outdoor hiking store and buying a pair of baggy men’s cotton cargo pants because I thought the pockets would be useful. Then I bought some blaze camo fleece from the fabric shop and made myself a bush tee. Of course I realised at the first river crossing, ten minutes in, that the cotton cargos were a bad choice and I longed for the gaiters the others were wearing. I ripped the crotch in the pants thanks to that low hanging men’s fit and I got pretty cold trudging through snow on the tops because those pants wicked like a thirsty sailor! But the pants changed my life and my career path too. Thinking about it, I wish I had kept them as a memento. Fast forward to today, when I have almost 14 years’ experience designing outdoor apparel – for both men and women. It’s been hugely rewarding to get out in the hills

wearing gear that I’ve had a hand in developing. And being able to experience that with other work mates, friends and family and our test team members definitely amplifies the reasons I love what I do. When I stumbled on fellow hunter Moana Robb’s Instagram page as we were launching the Sisterhood range, I thought to myself ‘far out, check out this chick getting it done!’ I imagined that one day I might be out there chasing those dream hunts with her and others like her. We connected and traded stories for a few years and finally set a date for me to have a crack at my first Chamois. I’ve never hunted with just one other woman before and, to be honest, I was both nervous and extremely excited to be heading back to the mainland at Labour Weekend. This hunt symbolised so much for me. Not only was it a species on my hunting bucket list, but I’d be pursuing it with another hunter who had encountered the same ‘male-only hunter’s clothing’ challenges as me. I do feel really stoked to be part of an epic brand that helps ensure everyone is having the best possible experience, in gear specifically designed for them. I guess that’s why the Sisterhood range has always had a special spot in my heart. So, that Friday afternoon I arrived at Moana’s home wearing a big grin. After a quick catch up, we got stuck into getting our gear ready and hit the road to set up camp for the night. As is often the case, the weather forecast largely dictated where we ended up but Moana also had the extra challenge of choosing a location better suited to my ability. I was nursing a bad knee ahead of surgery the following week and wasn’t in the best physical state to be scaling bluffs carrying a multi-day pack. I didn’t want to put my new mate in a tricky situation, either.

WOMEN'S RANGE - SISTERHOOD

We dubbed that first day ‘the honey pot’, based on the number of species spotted. We left camp at 6:30am and started climbing; the number of animals we saw grew with the elevation. Fallow and reds in the morning, then wallabies, then a surprise towards the end of the day. My recent hunts have mainly been pig hunts so I was super exited to move at a slower pace and spend more time glassing. I love glassing, it’s similar to spending hours at a time looking at the tip of your fishing rod, my mind slows right down and my thoughts are quiet, there’s only a few activities in my life where I can get to this state - surfing being the other - and I really appreciate the benefits from it. Moana has abundant knowledge from her veterinary nursing and Department of Conservation careers, as well as overseas travel. I enjoyed learning about the flora and fauna of the area we passed through. The day was hot and, with no chamois spotted, it was almost time to head back. Mo stood up from her glassing spot to have one last look down the other side. Within minutes, she returned with the most bewildered, excited expression and whispered “OMG it’s a tahr”. I was gobsmacked. Earlier, she had shown me the shrubs tahr like to eat but said it was pretty unlikely they were in this area. We were quick to change our focus from chamois to tahr and made a speedy decision to drop down and have a crack at the bull that was bedded up in a steep ravine. The wind was not in our favour, nor were the wallabies darting all over the show, and we missed a clear shot by a narrow window. To be honest, I was just stoked to see my first tahr and to have something so unexpected drop into our day.

but an opportunity to set up the spotting scope and take a good look at him. We continued around the face into a basin and made our way up the opposite ridgeline to come out on top of him. Then, a moment of déjà vu. Mo stopped and said again “OMG it’s another friggen tahr”. Once again, in an unlikely area. We joked that next time we should plan a tahr hunt and we might get luckier with chamois. The weather seemed to be holding off so we kept going. And I’m glad we did. Mo spotted two more chamois on the other side of the ridge then watched through the spotting scope as I found a comfy spot to take a shot. This all took a bit of time as I was waiting for a lull in the wind. At 278 yards, I squeezed the trigger. Due to kickback, I’ve never been very good at keeping my eye sighted in through the scope so my ears were tuned to listen for the thud. Thanks to the wind, it took the slightest bit longer to hear the impact but in that split second of waiting, I was thinking the worst. Then I heard it, and looked up at Mo, who grinned and said “hit.” There really is something incredible about being out in the back country and sweating your ass off, taking in those massive vistas, being challenged and pushing yourself to adapt to the environment, weather and your own mind. And to do this in the company of another hunter who shares the same drive makes every part of it better. As Mo said on the walk out, it doesn’t take long for a hunter to forget about the punishing times and become amped for the next challenge. She’s dead right. Thrilling as the hunt was, my new bond with Moana was easily the best part of the weekend and I am already fizzing and making plans for our next hunt.

After losing sight of the tahr, we began our walk out and arrived back at camp just after 10pm, hungry after several hours of trading wild food recipes. We decided to pack down our Armadillos and head back to Twizel, then hunt a different spot in the morning. As expected, the next day was a complete contrast weather-wise, with a front forecasted to move in around 3pm from the west. The wind gusts were strong enough to force us into a crouch on the ridgelines, so it was on with the Frostline Jackets. It didn’t take long to spot the first chamois of the trip, too far away to shoot

WHAT MAKES STONEY CREEK PACKS PURPOSE BUILT FOR HUNTING?

WHY THE DIFFERENT FABRICS BEHIND THE CAMO AND THE BAYLEAF?

We hunters use their packs in very different ways from other outdoor users. Because we do not stick to the beaten path size and shape is important, that hunters pack must not restrict movement, or hook up when trying to move quietly through the bush. We need to carry specialised gear and a lot of it is not designed to be carried in a pack. So special consideration must be given to organisation, attachment points and "on the move" access to important gear, as well as rifle and bow carry options. After a successful hunt the pack will be loaded with meat to be carried home, this knee buckling extra weight is expected and the pack needs to be reinforced and balanced to carry this load as safely and comfortably as possible.

When hunting in close bush conditions wind and noise are your enemy, the scratching of a branch on your nylon pack can alert game to your presence. To combat this our TCF/TCA Tricord fabric has a brushed polyester face to keep you hidden and absorb this noise. We also offer the packs in a Bayleaf 500D PU coated 100% Nylon Oxford for hunters above the bushline, or in conditions where faster dry times and being lighter weight are more of a priority.

WHY WE MADE THE ARMADILLO There are many tents on the market, some are super light and easy to break, some are hard to set up, especially in tough terrain or unpredictable conditions. Whilst being lightweight is important, we set out to design a range of tents that didn’t compromise on strength in high stress areas, and being able to be set up in all conditions is every bit as important. After using many tent brands with both good and bad experiences, we felt we could design more suitable and reliable options for the discerning outdoors adventurer. The design team and myself set about compiling all the feedback from our test team and customers, to design, test and construct a lightweight back country tent that can be used in a few ways and optimise your pack weight depending on the excursion. After 8+ prototypes and 4+ years of design and testing, we have come up with the Armadillo. What are some of the key considerations for a hunter when choosing a boot?

What happened to your Greywacke boots, they were so comfortable and my favourite?

(KC) There are many things to consider when choosing the right boot. Primarily you

(KC) It took a lot of work to make something as good as the Greywacke better - and

need to know the terrain you will be on, and how much weight you are going to carry on your back. The steeper the ground the stiffer the boot, so if you are going to spend time climbing up or around steep country carrying heavy loads, the support from boots with a less, or non-flexible midsole and forefoot will give you a solid platform to walk on. This combined with ankle support will spread the load over a wider surface saving your calves and lower legs. If however you are going to be on softer flatter ground, spending your day in and out of rivers and like to move quickly and quietly, a light weight boot that moves with you and gives you feeling though the forefoot will allow the largest amount of natural, smooth, silent forward movement.

the Explorer is just that. We started from the ground and worked up, the Vibram® Cheetah Outsole designed specifically by Vibram® for hunting, offered a great balance between grip on unstable ground and high milage wear. The aggressive lugs bite into the ground and the deep heel offers excellent braking downhill. The Midsole was upgraded to a tapered Nylon 66 full length board. Support through the entire stride with extra focus on restricting torsional flex. We kept the full gain Nubuck leather upper but rather than the bootie construction added the revolutionary HDry® seamless laminated waterproof breathable membrane. In SATRA TM 444 Centrifugal testing this saves a massive 400grams per boot when wet compared to dry. Finally we updated the hardware and wrapped the rubber rand all the way around the boot for more protection. Importantly we kept the 'out of the box' comfort and extra width that people loved.

An innovative lamination process is used to bond a membrane directly onto the inner surface of the uppers. This completely seals every potential point where water could get in. Because It leaves no space between the upper and the membrane water cannot penetrate into the shoe. There is therefore no increase in weight and the footwear dries more quickly.

Having hunted Wapiti deer in Fiordland for 30+ years, and more than 25 years chasing Whitetail in Steward Island, Roy knows a thing or two when it comes to having gear that performs in the steepest, wettest and coldest hunting environments in the country. Roy works extremely closely with our team of technical design experts, to continue our dedication towards building purpose-built hunting gear, specifically designed to perform in Fiordland’s most extreme, rugged and remote environments.

Fortunate to have grown up in a hunter’s paradise down in the deep South, Kim was introduced to alpine hunting from her brothers and it’s safe to say, she hasn’t looked back. Spending most of her weekends up high in the mountains chasing a variety of big game animals, she doesn’t leave home without her Women’s Stow It Overtrousers which she trusts to be ready for action, should the weather turn. Kim is also passionate about fresh water fishing, and is just at home down in the southern rivers, as she is up on the tops.

When you meet Fordy he always has a story to tell and in the pig hunting category there are tonnes! This scent controlling technical fabric blends the softness and breathability of cotton, with the high performance wicking and rapid dry times of technical synthetics. Coffee grounds are woven into the fibre which helps absorb sweat and diffuse moisture, speeding up dry times. Odours get trapped within the fibre and are released through washing or sunlight.

DURABLE WATER REPELLENCY (DWR)

Clean off any dirt, blood, sweat. Ensure your rainwear layer is fully DRY before you store it away. Storage, ensure that the environment where you store your garments is a dry damp-free place. Ensure rainwear items are hanging up and not stored in a cram bag or screwed up in a heap

To extend the life of the garment and for best performance, use a small amount of non-scented LIQUID detergent. DO NOT use powder detergents, fabric softener or chlorine bleach. Powder detergents include artificial scents, UV brighteners and abrasives that will reduce the life of the garment.

If you notice that the water is not beading off the outer surface it’s time to replenish the DWR. Wash your jacket through a standard wash cycle (use liquid detergent), then you can wash it again using an inwash DWR replenisher (at 30°c). Dry the garment at a LOW temperature in a tumble drier (for NO MORE than 15 mins) or air dry.
