In January 1997, inmates at this maximum security prison went on a six week rampage. Once the riot was controlled, it became obvious that the wreckage was extensive. Cell walls had been leveled, doors and windows were smashed, the sinks, toilets and beds in the cells were destroyed. Vinyl composite tile had been torn off the floor and burned or was used as projectile weapons against the prison guards. THE CHALLENGE The constant fires had burned and discoloured the original flooring and there was extensive water damage and lifting, due to the efforts used to extinguish the fires. Millhaven needed to install several new floors, however, instead of replacing the damaged floors with tile, Ken Gorter, Millhaven Public Works Manager, decided that the current type of flooring was simply not durable enough and started searching for “...a solid system with low maintenance”. In his research, Ken spoke with several Stonhard customers and was impressed with the durability, cleanability and maintenance of the floors.
THE STONHARD SOLUTION Due to its high durability, self-extinguishing properties and improved cleanability characteristics, the Stonhard team recommended using Stonclad GS, with two coats of Stonkote GS4 for the cells and corridors. Stonshield HRI, a textured, slip resistant flooring system was approved for the Day Rooms because it offered a more attractive appearance. All remaining floor tiles were removed and the substrate below the floors was prepared mechanically, using the Blastrac method. Stonhard’s Standard Epoxy Primer was then applied to seal the concrete and penetrate the substrate for a sound bond. Stonclad GS, a 1/4” thick silica filled epoxy flooring system, was applied in the cells and corridors. The same system was used to form 4” radius coves in the corridors to ensure easy maintenance. To complete the system, Stonkote GS4, a two-component epoxy coating, was then applied to the newly installed floors to increase their cleanability and aesthetics. Ken Gorter was completely satisfied with the Stonhard floors and looks forward to working with the company on future projects.
