LOAD TESTING

DATE: 2012 MATERIAL QUANTITY: 6,600 Metres LOCATION: Klerksdrop, South Africa AFTER StonCor South Africa recently supplied CarboComp Plus for the strengthening of a parking deck project in Klerksdorp, located in the North West Province of South Africa. The parking structure was added as part of an extensive expansion to the Shopping Centre. Soon after completion, severe cracking was observed over the columns on the upper level. Upon investigation, it was found that both the upper and lower concrete decks were deflecting under load, resulting in closure of the structure. The loss of parking space and revenue was detrimental to the Shopping Centre. After a full investigation, it was concluded that the failure was due to a design error and various repair and rebuild options were explored. The most cost effective repair option was a combination of CarboComp Plus Carbon Fibre Plates bolted into the structure with Hilti Anchors along with additional steel column caps to improve load distribution and to resist punching shear.

The undersides of the concrete were mechanically prepared using 6,600m of 50mm wide by 1.2mm thick CarboComp Plus Plates and were bonded and anchored using Structural Epoxy Adhesive and 10mm diameter Hiliti Chemical Anchors drilled to a depth of 70mm. Cracking in the upper surface of the slab above the columns was epoxy injected to help restore structural integrity in this vital area. After completion, a load test was carried out by adding 26,000 kilograms in one bay (between 4 columns) and leaving it for 24 hours. Deflection was reduced to an acceptable 4.9mm with 100% recovery within 24 hours of removing the load. This option saved thousands of Rand in potential demolition, removal and rebuilding costs, reduced disruption and returned the parking structure to the Shopping Centre in a timely manner. Load testing was done using skids of cement that were packed on the slab.
