THE CHALLENGE Structural analysis of cracks on the surface of the grain silos at the Maisdour Societe Cooperative Operations in Hagetmau revealed that the original steel reinforcement was under designed for the capacity of the silos. THE SOLUTION The engineers from ICS Nicolas required a solution to increase the bearing capacity of the silos. Carbon Fibre Reinforcement Technology was chosen due to its high tensile strength and stiffness, low self weight, low creep and high durability. It was found

that uni-directional laminates had a tendancy to peel off the adhesive during curing. To alleviate this, multi-directional CarboComp Plus was used for the majority of the project and mechanically anchored every 0.2 metres (in addition to bonding with epoxy adhesive) with simple concrete anchors. In total, 4,100 metres of 120 mm x 1.2 mm unidirectional and multi-directional laminate was used to strengthen the silos, returning them to operational capacity.
