Commitment • Passion • Pride • Respect • Swagger Dear Friends, Six conference championships. Seven conference player of the year awards. A department best second place finish in the America East Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings and an overall G.P.A. that once again surpassed the 3.0 mark. As I write this letter, I can say without reservation and with great enthusiasm that today, Stony Brook University Athletics is stronger than ever before. The success on and off the field in 2009-10 was not the result of a new shift in philosophy, a secret ingredient or a bold stroke of luck. Instead, it is a reflection of many years of hard work by our student-athletes, staff, coaches, University administrators and dedicated supporters who believed in our core values and demonstrated an unyielding will to compete. During the past 12 months, football captured its first Big South Conference title, Men’s Soccer won its second conference championship, Women’s Cross Country captured its third consecutive crown, Men’s Basketball roared to the top of the conference standings to its first regular season championship and postseason berth to the NIT, baseball grabbed its second conference title in the last three years and Men’s Lacrosse became the nation’s Cinderella team –taking No. 1 ranked Virginia to the final minute with a Final Four bid on the line in perhaps the most exciting lacrosse game ever played on Long Island. Team success also brought an avalanche of individual recognition. Player of the Year awards were handed out to linebacker Tyler Santucci (football), Leonardo Fernandes (men’s soccer), Muhammed El-Amin (men’s basketball), Holly Van Dalen (track & field), Nick Tropeano (baseball), William Carmona (baseball), Nini Lagvalava (women’s tennis), Kevin Crowley (men’s lacrosse). Crowley also became Stony Brook’s first men’s lacrosse player to grab first-team All-American honors and become a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award that goes to the nation’s best player. Not to go unnoticed was the work of several outstanding coaches. Chuck Priore (football), Steve Pikiell (men’s basketball), Andy Ronan (cross country), and Rick Sowell (men’s lacrosse) all earned conference Coach of the Year honors. But wait there’s more. Academically, we proudly posted a 3.03 grade point average among all of our America East student-athletes to mark the fourth consecutive year that Stony Brook student-athletes have surpassed the 3.0 G.P.A mark. The Seawolves had 29 America East All-Academic selections and three America East Scholar Athletes, which are given to the athletes who distinguish himself/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport. The Stony Brook Department of Athletics also experienced great successes in another substantial way as well. Contributions to our Annual Athletic Fund held steady despite the economic downturn. During the past year, the contributions of over 1,200 donors, funded various Stony Brook University Athletic endeavors including: academic development initiatives, recruiting, facility renovations, team resources, and scholarships. Over the next year, our fundraising efforts will allow us to build a new baseball field, install a new track and field turf practice field, and build a state-of-the-art student-athlete performance center.
Behind a combination of six regular season and championship titles, Stony Brook finished second, its best finish since joining the conference in 2001, in the 2010 America East Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup final standings. The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East Conference as determined by a scoring system which rewards an institution for success during both the regular season and championship competition in the conference’s 20 sports.
And yet, when I look forward, I am inspired not only by what we have accomplished but what lies ahead as we turn to the challenge of sustaining and building upon the success that we so aggressively sought for many years. While we will surely face unforeseen challenges from the state budget crisis, I promise that we’ll meet every challenge head on with the courage and resolve necessary to push our program forward.
Seawolves Athletics 2009-10
While our focus on results is always important, I can promise you that we will also take a hard look at the reasons for our success to better prepare us for a brighter future. It is that transparent analysis that will power the creation of a new vision statement over the next 12 months that will take us places we could never have dreamed of 50 years ago.
50 all-conference student-athletes 14 first team all-conference selections
The following pages highlight the many accomplishments we believe are vital in our commitment to providing a positive, meaningful experience for all Stony Brook student-athletes; an experience that will serve our young men and women well when they move on to successful lives after they graduate from Stony Brook.

With your help, we are creating an environment in which our student-athletes will continue to thrive in both their athletic and academic pursuits.

2009-10 STONY BROOK ANNUAL REPORT
“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our student-athletes, coaches and staff members who all contributed to our recent growth and development which ultimately culminated in a phenomenal year for Stony Brook athletics.” “While our success will never be defined solely by winning championships, as a department and university, we appreciate the opportunity to compete for the Commissioner’s Cup and look forward to continuing to challenge for the top spot in the years ahead.” – Jim Fiore, Director of Athletics Scoreboard Stony Brook University installed a new video and scoring system at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. In addition to serving as the home of the Seawolves football, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer teams, LaValle Stadium served as the host venue for the 2010 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals and will serve as the site for the 2011 & 2012 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship, which will include the semifinals and national championship game. The new system has been completely installed and includes the video board, two scoreboards and a new sound system.

Seawolves Giving Back Stony Brook University’s Department of Athletics and the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) set a new record by collecting 1,309 pairs of shoes during the 3rd Annual Soles4Souls shoe drive. The drive was organized and run by the SAAC which collected the shoes over just five days. This year's total surpassed the two previous shoe drives combined. Junior Stephen Marino of the Stony Brook University baseball team was named the recipient of the America East 2010 Male Sportsmanship Award, the conference announced at its annual meetings. Marino demonstrated sportsmanship during the 2009 baseball season when he suffered a broken wrist. Once healed, despite being eligible for a medical red shirt due to the percentage of games played at the time of his injury, Marino approached his coach, unsolicited, to voluntarily forego his red-shirt opportunity and help his team reach the conference championship, for which the squad did eventually qualify. Also during the 2009 season, Marino and other team leaders went to visit a local youth baseball player who was being treated with a rare blood disease at Stony Brook Hospital. He and his teammates also registered in the national bone marrow donor registry in honor of the local youth. Stony Brook student-athletes and staff, Wolfie and the Stony Brook band and cheer all participated in the 17th annual Walk for Beauty, sponsored by the Stony Brook University Medical Center and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization. The community-wide event is to benefit research for breast and prostate cancer. Over 125 student-athletes participated across all 20 Stony Brook sports.
