Prashanth Srivatsa,

n this insightful interview, Prashanth dives deep into the world of The Spice Gate, a richly woven narrative blending the complexity of subjugation, rebellion, and hope He shares the inspiration behind Amir, a protagonist torn between privilege and pain, and offers a glimpse into the creative process of crafting the intricate kingdoms and spice gates that define his world From the influence of the Silk Roads to the unexpected challenges of writing during a pandemic, Prashanth reflects on how his personal experiences and research have shaped the novel's exploration of caste, hierarchy, and resilience Get ready to journey through an epic tale that challenges and captivates in equal measure

In “The Spice Gate,” Amir’s journey is both personal and epic What inspired you to create a protagonist with such a unique ability and background?

Amir’s journey is his need It is driven by desperation, status and the sheer will for a better life for him and his family Amir is constantly torn between the dichotomy of life as a Spice Carrier: the ability to traverse the eight kingdoms versus the pain, suffering and social ostracization as a result of it. I wanted a character who could navigate this duality and who could challenge the lure of stability.

The concept of the Spice Gates and the eight kingdoms is fascinating. Can you share more about the world-building process and how you developed the idea of spices as a central element?

It’s honestly just something that came to me one fine day If I told you I came up with the idea when I was adding spices while cooking lunch, I’d be lying It was an idea, and when it came to me, it sounded pretty cool in my head, and I decided to see how I could explore that further I was always fascinated with the Silk Roads and somehow, the two thoughts merged to give birth to this fantastic world I wanted a world where the vast distances of the Silk Roads were eliminated by means of the spice gates, and yet, the system was rigged in favor of some at the expense of others

Themes of subjugation, rebellion, and the quest for freedom are central to your novel. How did you approach weaving these themes into the narrative, and what message do you hope readers take away from them?

The message is always to check your privileges To acknowledge them, and then to work towards leveling the playing field for those who are not as privileged as you are by working together And it is important to look at this intersectionally

There have always been stories of rebellion and freedom We tell stories of action and adventure because there are people who are willing to take the risk to get what they need And these stories exist despite so called ‘advances’ in society, because we always leave something or someone behind We don’t have time to turn back and see the long line that stretches behind us, and are too desperate to catch up to the front The Spice Gate is a small ode to those who first want to be a part of this long, winding line, because they deserve to be, and then one day, to own the line

Your writing has been praised for its immersive and richly detailed style What techniques or strategies do you use to create such vivid and intricate worlds?

Hmm I can’t remember any particular techniques or strategies, unfortunately I doubt I employed any consciously My writing is largely a product of my reading I’ve always enjoyed works that have a rich, immersive world, and make the experience of reading transportive. I wanted to set up a world where a reader could imagine themselves to be a part of despite the harrowing experiences of its characters. I think having a lot of food in there definitely helps to make readers feel at ease and at home. Does that count as a strategy?

“The Spice Gate” critiques caste, religion, and hierarchy while celebrating resilience and hope. How do your personal experiences and perspectives influence these themes in your writing?

From personal experience and perspective, from the vantage of my privilege, I presume to be the oppressor That does not make me a bad person by and itself, but that I am a part of a system that inherently favors me over few others, while there are undoubtedly those it favors over me It takes compassion and empathy to look beyond our circle (or hexagon) to lives that are forged in resilience and hope And once there’s compassion, you want to see that resilience and hope fulfilled

What was the most unexpected challenge you encountered while writing a book?

Covid!

Also, an awkward struggle I faced at one point was to pinpoint where this book ought to start It had multiple beginnings over the course of time, but I do strongly feel that where it finally began is what suits it best (unless you think otherwise, in which case I’m happy to imagine alternatives)

What research did you conduct for this book, and did you uncover anything surprising or fascinating?

Plenty I read truckloads of research papers and books on the early and medieval spice trade, the Silk Roads, histories of spice-rich places in Asia such as Sri Lanka, Molucca, Malabar, etc Never let anyone tell you that you don’t need research to write fiction Research for fiction can drive you nuts For beginners, I highly recommend The Taste of Conquest by Michael Krondl

What I found fascinating was the sheer number of uses spices had besides food and status They were used in corpse preservations, exorcisms, love & lust, perfumes, witchcraft, to summon gods, to guard against pestilence, as gifts, as a guide for mariners, etc

What was the most rewarding moment you experienced during the writing process?

Beta-reader feedback, definitely. I had a few close friends who read my work, and their feedback was immense validation (even if a lot of it was critical). Secondly, as a writer, there are these scenes you visualize. It could be as simple as two characters having a conversation, or a great sunrise on a mountain, or a thrilling reveal. But it’s something in your head that gives you direction, and keeps you going. And when you actually write down that scene you’ve been visualizing all along, and you sit back and soak it in, that’s a great feeling I had that for the bridge battle towards the end I always knew I wanted to write one heartstopping duel on a bridge across a treacherous waterfall, so that was extremely rewarding to see it realized on paper

Can you share a behind-the-scenes anecdote or interesting fact about the creation of this book?

Amir was supposed to be a heavily chai-drinking person Turns out, he doesn’t drink chai even once during the course of the novel, even though he talks about it a few times I realized it too late in the publishing process Way too late So I wrote a small companion page for the novel that I keep for myself, which is just Amir sitting on a bench outside a tea stall in the kingdom of Talashshukh, having chai

What projects are you currently working on, and can you offer any hints or teasers for your upcoming work?

I’m currently working on a couple of projects, both of which are fantasy in nature One is an epic fantasy, again in a wholly secondary world, which has a deep, rich lore, a sassy heroine and a puzzle to solve The other is a historical pirate fantasy structured around the ancient history of Tamil Nadu So it has many real places and many real people, but also a lot of cool, imaginary stuff And of course, it has pirates

As you turn the page, let the adventure begin –our book reviews await, promising literary delights and captivating tales!

Capitalism, Alone by Branko Milanovic

Branko Milanovic’s "Capitalism, Alone" offers a thorough analysis of capitalism as the dominant socio-economic system in today’s world. The book explores the historical shifts that have led to capitalism’s global dominance and delves into the two primary variants of capitalism that now vie for global leadership: liberal meritocratic capitalism and political (authoritarian) capitalism. Milanovic identifies capitalism as the sole surviving economic system, having outlasted alternatives like feudalism and communism He categorizes capitalism into two main forms: liberal meritocratic capitalism, represented by the United States, and political capitalism, exemplified by China While liberal meritocratic capitalism emphasizes equality of opportunity, it still perpetuates inequality, as the wealthy can pass on their advantages to their offspring In contrast, political capitalism, despite its efficient bureaucracy, is plagued by a lack of rule of law and inherent corruption The book is praised for its intellectual depth, providing a sweeping overview of economic and social history Milanovic’s classification of different capitalist systems is considered a significant contribution to the understanding of global economics However, the book faces criticism for its limited focus on environmental issues and its brevity in addressing solutions to the challenges it discusses. Additionally, Milanovic’s perspective on the historical role of communism is seen as unconventional by some readers. Milanovic’s analysis of the two main variants of capitalism liberal meritocratic capitalism and political capitalism reveals key differences in their approaches to governance, economic control, and inequality. While liberal capitalism allows for more democratic input and rule of law, it still drives up inequalities Political capitalism, with its greater state control and efficiency, suffers from corruption due to its lack of autonomy and the rule of law Despite these differences, both systems remain fundamentally capitalist, with private ownership of capital and production geared towards markets "Capitalism, Alone" is a thought-provoking and comprehensive examination of the dominance of capitalism and its future prospects Milanovic’s exploration of the varieties of capitalism provides valuable insights into the challenges and potential paths forward for the global economy

While the book is not without its flaws, it offers an important contribution to the ongoing debate about the future of capitalism and the possibility of a more equitable system emerging in the years to come.

Do Not Ask the River Her Name by

Sheela Tomy

This freedom, however, must be accompanied by the responsibility to avoid chaos and ensure that one's choices benefit both oneself and the broader community Frankl’s concept of logotherapy, a meaning-centered approach to mental health, weaves throughout the book, reinforcing the idea that personal and collective responsibility is key to finding purpose Overall, "Embracing Hope" offers a profound and timely exploration of Frankl’s enduring themes

Law and the Economy in India by Tirthankar Roy and Anand V Swamy

Tirthankar Roy and Anand V. Swamy’s book, "Law and the Economy in IndiaBefore Independence and After", delves into the intricate interplay between law and economic development in India, examining both the colonial period and the post-independence era Through these analyses, the authors highlight how historical legal frameworks have influenced India’s economic policies and practices, revealing ongoing challenges and contradictions in the country's legal and economic systems. In their exploration of British colonial rule, Roy and Swamy trace the development of the legal system from the late eighteenth century. They describe how the British established a hybrid legal framework combining British Common Law with indigenous practices This system, shaped by the British's limited understanding of India's diverse society, resulted in a legal environment often marked by disorder and inefficiency, particularly impacting economic growth After India's independence in 1947, Roy and Swamy explore how the legal system evolved to address the country's new political and economic realities, focusing on three main influences: the pursuit of equity, skepticism towards market activities, and democratic evolution These factors shaped legal reforms intended to reduce inequality, manage economic growth, and enhance representation However, the ongoing inadequacies of the legal infrastructure have continued to impede economic progress. Reforms such as the abolition of the Zamindari system aimed at reducing inequality but were unevenly implemented. Rural credit laws have not fully addressed access issues for small farmers, and land acquisition for development has been complicated by democratic processes. Environmental laws have faced inconsistent enforcement, labor laws have been criticized for hindering industrial growth, and frequent changes in company law have created business uncertainty Intellectual property rights reforms have attracted foreign investment but raised concerns about balancing protection with accessibility Roy and Swamy’s analysis in “Law and the Economy in IndiaBefore Independence and After” reveals the enduring impact of colonial legal frameworks on India’s economic policies and practices

The authors’ work offers a comprehensive view of how colonial legal institutions have shaped modern India, highlighting the need to address historical legacies to foster more effective economic policies and legal reforms

What Does Israel Fear From Palestine? by

Raja Shehadeh

In his new book "What Does Israel Fear From Palestine?", author Raja Shehadeh offers a poignant and incisive meditation on Israel's longstanding rejection of peace with the Palestinians Through graceful, haunting prose, Shehadeh examines the many lost opportunities to promote lasting peace and equality between the two sides Raja Shehadeh's critiques of Israeli and Palestinian leadership are deeply rooted in his personal experiences, legal background, and the broader Palestinian narrative, shaping his views on the conflict and the prospects for peace. The book is divided into two parts. The first part, "How Did We Get Here?", is an edited version of a speech Shehadeh gave at a peace conference in Kyoto in 2016. It condenses the complex history of the conflict into a lucid essay, highlighting how each side's perception of events has strongly diverged since the creation of Israel in 1948, known to Palestinians as the Nakba or catastrophe

The second part of the book, written after the outbreak of the recent Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, reflects Shehadeh's growing bitterness and anguish at the ongoing conflict He confronts an unnamed Israeli friend about the Israeli army's treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, only to be met with assurances that Israelis are suffering from trauma and grieving

Despite the darkness, Shehadeh manages to offer a message of hope, suggesting that the nightmare of the past few months may be the catalyst for a lasting peace He argues that while apartheid in South Africa ended in 1994 due to internal activism and global pressure, Israel has continued to pursue its apartheid policies against Palestinians with comparatively little international backlash. Shehadeh's book delivers a calm yet compelling critique of both Israeli and Palestinian leadership, highlighting missed opportunities for peace rooted in compromise and international law. Through his clear thinking, engaging style, and insightful analysis, he offers fresh perspectives on the enduring conflict, driven by the hope that his work may help shift the narrative

His deep passion for his people adds depth and balance, making this a quick yet impactful read.
