THE FESTIVAL IS AT THE SEAPORT WORLD TRADE CENTER —IN THE HEART OF BOSTON’S INNOVATION DISTRICT.

www.bikff.org

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Boston International Kids Film Festival On behalf of all our filmmakers, sponsors, partners and the entire team at Filmmakers Collaborative, we would like to welcome you to the 3rd annual Boston International Kids Film Festival. We are grateful that you have chosen to be with us this weekend. We have spent the past year assembling what we hope is a wonderful program of feature films, documentaries, shorts and workshops. Our team of reviewers has selected 80 of the best and brightest films, all FOR or BY kids. These include a particularly impressive array of student-made films including At the Other End, from Canada, Tehila from Israel and Mimi and Bobby, made here in Boston. Our selection of feature-length documentaries includes Bite Size, which tells the story of four inspiring kids from diverse backgrounds who are fighting for their health one day at a time. The Year We Thought About Love is a film that celebrates the powerful work of a Boston LGBTQ troupe, True Colors. We are also pleased to be able to share a never before seen version of a Walt Disney biography, produced by Sarah Colt for WGBH in Boston. We believe that it is the workshops at the BIKFF that really set us apart from other film festivals. This year we will offer hands-on instruction by leaders in the fields of social media, animation, and GoPro movie-making. Additionally, we are proud to offer MEDIA GIRLS, a workshop led by Michelle Cove, where “girls give media the makeover” and discussions will be led by producers of films focused on topics ranging from food allergies to autism. Pulling all of this together has been no small feat and there is no way we could have done it on our own. Our deepest thanks go to all who have made this possible: Anne Damphousse-Feilteau and Mike Brennan of Stormship for going above and beyond their role as graphic designers too many times to mention, our interns Olivia Osiecki and Lily Straight, our editor Elissa Mintz, our location manager Donna Guran, the marketing team of Callanan & Klein, the staff at the Seaport World Trade Center, our board members, film festival committee members, reviewers and festival volunteers for donating your time and passion to the BIKFF. A huge thanks also to our sponsors: Mystic Artists Films Productions for believing in our vision from the very beginning, The British School of Boston for sponsoring our opening night block of student films, our media sponsor The Boston Globe and all of our other sponsors who you will see listed throughout the program book. Thank you all! Most of all, we would like to thank you for coming. Ultimately, filmmaking is about the audience. Your attendance and enjoyment is what has allowed us to get to get to our 3rd anniversary and is what will allow us to offer the BIKFF for many years to come.

Thank you again! Enjoy! Laura Azevedo Stephanie Mills Festival Directors

Stephanie Mills

Associate Director, Filmmakers Collaborative steph@filmmakerscollab.org

The Peggy Charren Award for Excellence is named in honor of the woman long considered to be America’s “Grand Dame of Children’s Television,” the late Peggy Charren. Tired of the mindless cartoons and commercialsmasquerading-as-programs that her own children were offered in the 1960’s, Ms. Charren organized the parents in her community to create an advocacy group, Action for Children’s Television (ACT). Over the next 40 years, ACT was a formidable force, working to achieve quality, diversity, and less overt commercialism on children’s television. In 1990 the Children’s Television Act that Ms. Charren fought for became law; it limited the number of commercials that could appear during children’s programming, and compelled broadcasters to include informational and educational programs for kids. Charren had been recognized with the Trustees Award of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, a Peabody Award, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ms. Charren passed away in January, 2015.
