Spring 10

Company News

A Message From Mark Pengelly Welcome to the spring edition of the kier London newsletter. We have seen a busy start to this calendar year and I am extremely pleased to tell you that we have secured £100m in new opportunities, which are being delivered across our four offices. This level of turnover will enable us to grow our business and provide development opportunities for all our people. Thank you for your continued support, professional approach and team effort. We have made good progress since our merger in December and the later incorporation of Kier Airports. We have our organisation structure in place, and work is ongoing to establish a single set of processes and procedures. We are now looking forward to the summer months. During June, July, August and September many of you will be enjoying a well-deserved break. As part of the ongoing learning process and specific attention to Health and Safety in every

aspect of our business, we can see that it is in these months that Kier London has historically had most of our accidents (5 out of our total of 8). This mirrors a trend across the regional business. To ensure that we keep our friends and colleagues safe; I would ask each of you to remember this fact and encourage you to work together along with our supply chain to ensure that the appropriate supervisory cover is in place and that all works are planned in good time with specific reference to the Health & Safety risks. Lastly, with a focus on our people and their development we are replacing the annual appraisal process with ‘maximising performance’. Look out for the flyer attached to your payslip for more details about this opportunity for all. Best Wishes Mark

We are pleased to feedback that the following projects have recently passed significant Health & Safety milestones. Thamesview School has completed over 250,000 man hours and both Broadfields School and Northway & Fairway Schools have completed over 100,000 man hours without a RIDDOR accident. These excellent statistics are a testament to the site teams who are working on these projects and demonstrate that the increased safety focus being adopted on all projects through Don’t Walk By, SUSA and the Yellow and Red card initiatives are beginning to show real benefits to the business. Kier London United in Safety More than 100 Senior Managers attended the launch of the Kier London Safety Strategy which was held at the Building Centre in London. Managing director Mark Pengelly set the tone for the presentation by stating; “Today’s theme is about changing our attitude to health and safety in Kier London through total commitment and zero tolerance. Safety has to be the number one priority in everything that we do.” The meeting was an introduction to the senior managers from our three offices to the 12 key objectives and targets agreed by the Kier London board. Safety director Rusty Clarke, informed colleagues about the 12 targets and objectives which will be implemented across our business. The 12 Key Results Areas are 1. To focus on achieving an AIR of 0 by creating a culture of zero tolerance to accidents and to accident potential. 2. To raise the profile of our SHE strategy within management at every level by the promotion and intervention using a programme of inspections and audits at all levels of management. 3. A focus on putting people to work in a safe environment.

5. Project Managers and Site Managers to pro-actively manage safety on their projects and seek measurable betterment by the sharing of best practice. 6. Recognise the contribution of high performing teams and individuals. 7. Work with our Supply Chain to improve learning and training and to promote continuous improvement through the integration of behavioural safety techniques and learning. 8. Improve understanding and guidance in respect of the implementation of the Kier Group standards to all employees and our supply chain. 9. Ensure that all employees have the necessary training for their current current roles and to plan ahead for their future roles. 10. Maintain and ensure compliance with ISO 14001 our environmental standard. 11. To review all RIDDOR reportable accidents or dangerous occurrences to incorporate the lessons learnt to avoid future accidents/incidents. 12. Aim to reduce the waste produced on every project in line with the Halving Waste to Landfill initiative to demonstrate our support to this Group initiative.

4. Improve communication of our SHE strategy and planning at all levels. Mike Sanderson, Area SHE Manager reviewed the current status of accidents and incidents at Kier London. In the last year Kier London has had 10 reportable accidents ranging from an overturned excavator to a twisted ankle, making Kier London’s Accident Incident Rate (AIR) the highest in the group. All of these accidents were preventable and we have to work harder ensure that everyone returns home safely. After careful analysis of all the incidents, Mike identified that human error, management and competency contributed to the root causes of all the incidents.

Building Schools for the Future in Kent Kier is a key player in delivering Kent’s first Building Schools for the Future (BSF) Local Education Partnership (LEP1). Kier Project Investment is working alongside Kent County Council, Building Schools for the Future Investments and the technology provider, Northgate Managed Services to completely rebuild or substantially refurbish 10 secondary schools. Far from being just another school building programme, BSF provides Kent with the opportunity to combine significant capital investment in stateof-the-art buildings and ICT rich facilities with a bold educational vision to transform teaching and learning.

schools. KFS will also be delivering added value to the schools. In addition to the Skills Academy, the Kier contractors have sponsored the schools and / or community projects including sponsoring the

Kier has a 64% stake in LEP1; it is currently in the construction phase of the first 10 schools and is leading on the development of proposals for a further 25 secondary schools, special schools and pupil referral units in Kent. The Project was awarded National Skills Academy Status in 2008 and since then has delivered over 40 apprentices. Kier is the major building contractor and is delivering 5 of the initial 10 schools with Kier London being responsible for Thamesview and Dane Court, Kier Build for St Johns and Northfleet Technology and Kier Southern St Georges. Kier Facilties Services (KFS) are also involved in the project and are currently mobilising the delivery of soft and hard FM services. KFS will build on the excellent school relationships already established by the LEP and Kier site teams. Each contractor works closely with the LEP to ensure that BSF brings additional value to the schools and their communities. As a National Skills Academy, the LEP and its contractors have also assisted 144 local people completing NVQs and trained 55 people to be Construction Ambassadors; this provides these individuals with the skills to motivate young people to consider a career in construction. Kier London work closely with Thamesview School to support their Construction Diplomas, whilst Build and Southern have delivered numerous resource and careers days at their Kent LEP

gymnastic team at St Johns and the football, basketball and rugby teams at Northfleet. Kier has donated PPE equipment to a community group and is involved in a Business Partnership to renovate an old community building with students from Construction and Engineering in Gravesend with the aim of reducing anti social behaviour, engaging the local community, providing a social cohesion project and a safe environment for members of the community to meet and socialise. The Kent Local Education Partnership is a great example of the benefits gained from partnership working with Kier.

Broadfields School Completion Broadfields school received Practical Completion for phase 2 of the project on 1st April 2010, one day early and it wasn’t an April Fools day joke, it was due the contract date being on Good Friday. Teachers used the Easter holidays to prepare the new school for the children’s return for the start of the summer term. “I believe that the success of this project has been fundamentally due to the team work established between the client and the Kier team. It appears to me that the need for this kind of relationship is understood systematically by Kier. All the team members that I have worked with have been intent on forging relationships which will support a positive outcome for the project, this being something that other Head teachers working on their new school projects have not always found with their developers. I would like to thank all the Kier team for producing a wonderful, attractive and practical new school. It is a special place already! Well done and thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project from inception to completion.” Robin Archibald - Head Teacher

Kier sets apprentices on the right path Kier Harrow is creating real career opportunities for two young pals from the local community. Rowan Streete, 25, and 26-year-old Dwayne Carbon, who grew up together on the Rayners Lane Estate in South Harrow, have been taken on as apprentices at Kier’s £42m new-build project in Porlock Avenue, where a new Whitmore High School is now taking shape. Since leaving school, they have each tried to get a foothold on the career ladder but, despite taking up various college courses and trying a succession of jobs, they found themselves drifting – until Kier and Harrow Council stepped in.

Apprentices Dwayne (left) and Rowan with Joe Murphy, Kier’s project manager at Whitmore School.

Under a framework contract with Harrow, Kier is carrying out capital works schemes across the borough, mainly in the education and leisure sectors. Among its various projects, it has completed seven new sixth form centres and is currently engaged on building the new Whitmore High under the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. It is also modernising and improving a swimming and leisure complex at Hatch End. In an agreement between Kier and Harrow Council to provide training and employment for local young people, Rowan and Dwayne have begun three-year apprenticeships covering plumbing, heating and ventilation. Kier is sharing the cost of their training with Bailey Building Services, its specialist mechanical and electrical partner on the Whitmore School contract. Michael Gates, project manager at our Kennard Street project made a CR Request for £100 to support 13 year old, Stuart Lee. Stuart, British Junior Clicker Champion had been picked to compete in the Kyokushin Karate Pilatus Cup, in Switzerland in March 2010. Stuart finished in the top 16 of his event.

Kier Park, Uxbridge completes new office and warehouse unit

Kier London has completed a combined office and warehouse unit which is now occupied by AGS Fourwinds, an international transportation company. This unit is the first of fourteen proposed on the Kier Park site in Uxbridge, owned by Kier Property.

(L-R): Bernie Bonner, John Morrow, Tony Rock, Mark Jerzak, Yusuf Luhar, Peter Stewart outside the completed AGS unit

Kier London achieved completion on time, much to the satisfaction of the tenant and and have also finished the process of constructing a new motorcycle test centre at Kier Park for the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). The DSA facility is one of 40 being constructed as part of a rollout programme across England, Scotland and Wales to provide off-road facilities for the practical motorcycle driving test, and is the first which Kier have undertaken.

The project consists of an office building and an asphalt motorcycle manoeuvring area, measuring 125m x 40m, which must be ‘hydro-stripped’ to artificially age the wearing course ensuring that the road surface has adequate resistance to skidding from day one.

Tottenham Court Road project wins Georgian Group architectural award Kier London’s project at Tottenham Court Road recently received the prestigious Georgian Group Architectural Award for best New Building in a Classical Tradition. The project consisted of the full demolition of the old Horse Shoe Hotel sandwiched between the delicate and sensitive buildings of the Barbados High Commission and the Dominion Theatre in London. Careful co-ordination and a good working relationship with both adjoining neighbours meant that this was achieved with no significant issues. Following demolition came the construction of a new multi use development including 3 retail units with basements as shell only, 4 floors of commercial office space finished to Category A finish and 9 residential units with high quality finishes at roof level. Also part of the development was the refurbishment of a Grade II listed Georgian Town House on Great Russell Street. The front façade on the busy London shopping & tourist street of Tottenham Court Road was designed by the renowned Architect Quinlan Terry who is one of Prince Charles’s favoured Architects. This is a traditional load bearing limestone masonry construction some 1 metre thick in places. The bespoke bronzed aluminium curtain walling and windows and the Welsh slate mansard roof suitably finish this spectacular façade.

community Training in the Community

Kier London’s refurbishment project at the Great Northern Hotel has been forging links with the King’s Cross Construction Skills Centre (KXC) as part of their commitment to Argent, the project client, to develop local skills to work on the overall Kings Cross Regeneration project. Firstly two trainees, Taylor Reading and Dave Martin-Clare, from KXC have completed seven week, work experience placements on site as part of their Construction NVQ Apprenticeship. Both Taylor and Dave started on their course in September 2008 and have completed NVQ Level 1 in Bricklaying and are currently undertaking NVQ Level 2. Both trainees have gained a great deal from the experience and the level of time spent with them by Stan Smith, Kier Wallis Project Manager, and the brick and blockwork subcontractors. According to Martin, ‘I learnt more here in three weeks than I learnt on a twelve week placement on another site.’ However they both agreed the hardest part of being on site for them was keeping up with the bricklayers, as for every block they laid and levelled the bricklayers had laid six. Secondly, the site played host to a visit by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, on 1st July 2009 to celebrate KXC being awarded National Skills Academy status for Construction projects and to witness the main site contractors and King’s Cross Central in signing a Construction Employment Charter to achieve ambitious targets for jobs and training going forward. KXC was set up by the London Development Agency with in partnership with Argent to help provide suitably qualified workers for the Kings Cross redevelopment and ensure that local communities benefit from the development. As part of working on the site the contractors, or their supply chain, are expected to offer placements to the apprentices going through the centre.

Top CCS score at Barking Congratulations to the team at Barking Hospital for scoring 35 points in their last CCS inspection. John Bolton and his team are using part of their reward to donate equipment to the hospital’s charity, Friends of Barking Hospital.

Uxbridge College Sports Hall We are pleased to announce that we have started the New Year with an award to build a Sports Hall for Uxbridge College. We have won the £6m project by using alternative CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) construction, which has reduced the programme time which is important to the College. The work also include changing facilities, a new workshop and upgrading of the walkways and a MUGA (multi use games area). Mark Pengelly said:

Barking Hospital project team receiving their CCS certificate

The charity have raised funds to provide patients and visitors to the hospital refreshments for over 20 years.

‘This is a great way for the new business to start the New Year and shows a positive result from all our efforts. It is also our first project won as the new integrated Kier London, the original Prequalification was carried out by the Maple Cross office and the tender submitted from the Loughton Office, a truly combined effort. I wish the site team all the very best and look forward to seeing the benefits of the CLT method of construction”.

Insight into Management 2010 Kier London will be hosting the 3rd Insight into Management Programme between 21st June – 2nd July 2010. This programme is an alternative to work experience for post 16 ‘A’ level students. The intention is that small groups of students are placed within a variety of companies and organisations for five days, where they are required to solve a managerial problem which has been identified by the host company. In previous years students hosted by Kier have redesigned the company portfolio and produced a residents newsletter for the Barking Hospital project. Before placement the students will undergo two days of training, which is run in the school, in preparation for working with employers. Under the guidance of a mentor, the group works at the company for five days in order to provide a solution to the company. It is expected that the students will work as a team identifying tasks and delegating areas of responsibility for each member of the group. John Bolton with Insight into Management students at Barking Hospital

Once the task is complete, students will present their work to company representatives, this will also provide the opportunity for the mentor and company representatives to debrief the students. On the final day of the event the students are expected to present their work to an invited audience of participating employers, school and local authority representatives and student peers. Students have really benefited from relevant and worthwhile work related experience which has enable them to gain insight into management skills and competencies as well as develop problem solving skills to tackle a ‘real life’ business problems. The success of this depends on the participation of employers who are keen to invest time raising the attainment and broadening the horizons of young people. If you would like any further information about the programme, or would like to put your site forward to host a group of students then please contact Shirene Torrance-Dodd or Carol Simmonds.

London Young Chambers On 26th February, Blessing Gwena, Ed Dwight, Veejay Skanda-Kumar and I went to London Young Chambers (LYC) Capital Careers event in London, where 15-20 schools turned up for an event day. On the day several stalls were set up marketing various companies in different industries. Kier set up a stall that gave the young students an engineering challenge to build a small tower out of paper and straws on top of which they were to balance one or more pears. The highest tower reached over a foot. The kids loved it and were pleased to see something different as other stalls just gave talks for the 25 minute slot that they were given. We had two 25 minute slots per hour for the whole day and had 8 different groups, some quite large which we split into two groups per session.

David who has recently been informed that he is eligible to receive his 25 years of service award has decided that instead of choosing a gift that he would donate his full monetary award to the Jack’s P.A.C.K Foundation Charity which funds research for the many children suffering with the childhood form of cancer Neuroblastoma. He has also agreed to take part in a fund raising event with members of London & Essex Police forces in a New York Half Marathon on 22nd May 2010 and an aeroplane pulling challenge event. Every year, around one hundred children in the UK are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. The overall five year survival rate of sufferers from Neuroblastoma is 55%: however, for nearly 70% of children first diagnosed, the cancer will have disseminated to other parts of the body reaching what is known as Stage IV, or ‘’high-risk’’, Neuroblastoma. ’At the present time, UK hospitals are only able to provide palliative care with the best hope of partial or medium term cures available in the United States at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Centre in New York. You can lend your support for this charity, in particular for a young 7 year old girl named Robyn who is currently undergoing treatment for which funding is greatly needed by going to www.justgiving.com/jackspackrun4robyn if you do sponsor online then mention David Parsons in the message that you write. Tom’s Tough Run

Birthdays Many Happy Returns to everyone that celebrated a Birthday in January, February, March and April

I am raising money for Raleigh International. This charity funds community and sustainable environmental projects in the UK and abroad and gives people from all walks of life a chance to develop and see what they can achieve. To do so, I am taking part in an assault course and run in July. The run is a roughly 10 miles followed by the assault course, which looks wet muddy and fairly tiring. I know that there have been a few charity appeals lately and you can’t give to them all (as I know I don’t), but if you fancy donating to this one then your support would be much appreciated go to www.justgiving.com/Tom-Hiscutt Many Thanks, Tom-Hiscutt

Luke sets up live link at his old school A former pupil of Whitmore High in Harrow has forged a real “live” connection with his old school. As IT systems manager for regional building company Kier Southern, Luke Baxter has been called in to set up a round-the-clock webcam showing work progressing on the rebuilding of his alma mater.

Ex-Whitmore High pupil Luke Baxter demonstrates the new webcam to deputy head Joe Donovan and present-day students in the school viewing gallery overlooking Kier’s building project.

Luke, who was a pupil at Whitmore High in the late eighties and early nineties, was reunited with one of his old teachers, deputy head Joe Donovan, when he called in recently to show a group of IT students how he set up the webcam site online, showing live images of Kier Southern’s building project next-door.

Working as part of Kier Harrow projects, the innovative capital works and maintenance partnership with Harrow Council, Kier Southern is creating a modern Whitmore High on the site of the present school as part of a major education construction programme worth some £80m. In addition to Whitmore, this includes eight new sixth-form centres at schools across the borough. After leaving Whitmore High as a young student in 1993, Luke went onto Weald College and then Brunel University, to study business information technology. Following graduation, he worked in a couple of IT jobs before joining Kier Southern in the year 2000 as an IT systems supporter. Today, as the company’s IT systems manager based at its head office in Maple Cross, he is responsible for setting up and running all telecommunications and IT network infrastructure linking the office with dozens of building sites from the Home Counties down to the South Coast.

Sports News

Kier London Football Club Kier London enjoyed a well earned 8 -5 victory against Stace today, however, victory has been marred by an injury sustained to veteran John Hayes. Hayes who has made a recent return to Kier after a long spell in the wilderness, returned to action today only to hobble off after only 5 minutes of action. Hayes went down in such dramatic circumstances that initially his scream was thought to have come from the ladies spinning class which was taking place next door. This will be a huge blow to the man, who, after a long spell of behind the scenes bust-ups with the management over his commitment, was hoping to put it all behind him and concentrate on events on the field. Furthermore, doubts will now be cast on the levels of fitness of the player, after making numerous reassurances to the management to the contrary. Back to the match itself, and nobody could question the outcome with Kier gradually turning the screw in the second half. Kier started the match with Coyle in goals, and Butt, Florence, McCann and Miller completing the line-up. The match started with the usual high tempo which we are to expect from these two sides, with the match resembling a heavyweight boxing contest in which each fighter was feeling the other one out. Enter Nick “Six Goals” Miller, who fresh from his six goal rout against what must be considered as an under-strength Mad Maddox side, popped up with a fine finish to make it 1-0 , and thus continuing his current rich vein of form. On this early evidence we assumed we were in for a similar spectacle from the youngster, however the goal feast he had promised never materialised. Stace subsequently scored two without reply, with Kier equalising through debutant Ryan Mc Cann. It turned out to be a dream debut for Mc Cann, who went on to complete a fine hat-trick later in the game. Mc Cann was the first player brought in by the new management structure in the January transfer window, and on this evidence might be a shrewd buy for Kier. However, it is understood that he had been approached on numerous occasions regarding a transfer to Kier, only to turn them down on each occasion. This leads to doubts about the commitment of the new man

Spring 10

and whether he can produce such performances on a weekly basis. What is certain is that the management can spot new talent, and credit must be given to them for taking a chance on the lad. The fist half ended with Stace sneaking a goal at the whistle through the pot-bellied Chris (usually the ref), who by the looks of things was suffering the full effects of the festive season. Even so, the match remained finely balanced at the interval. Changes were made for the second half which included Butt swapping the gloves with Coyle, and McCann making way for Hayes who swapped in turn swapped the role of refereeing. In the early stages of the second half, Kier really turned up the heat, and two well taken goals by Florence in quick succession meant that Kier raced into a 4-3 lead until. The game continued with Kier applying all the pressure, and they arguably should have been further ahead, but for some good goalkeeping by Stace, and some dubious refereeing by McCann, who seemed intent on letting the game flow and being reluctant to put the whistle to his lips. Then, five minutes into the second half disaster struck for Hayes as his ankle was snared, and the game came to an abrupt stop. After a couple of minutes squirming in agony on the gym floor, Hayes was eventually escorted of the field of play, to be replaced by McCann. The game continued with Kier dominating and keeping a two goal cushion between themselves and Stace. Hayes, who cut a lonely figure in the stands, watched intensely could not failed to have been impressed by the slick Kier. Goals from Coyle and McCann cemented victory for Kier, which in the end was a comfortable 8 -5 win. This was a huge victory for Kier, and 2010 could not have started any better for them. However, even with McCann getting a hat-trick on his debut, all the headlines will be about Hayes and his future with Kier.
