It all sounds so easy and so right, the listing of improvements, like the nip-tuck of imaginative cosmetic surgery. The status quo is like a roaring freight train, easier to ride upon than to steer a new course, but a free train ride is no bargain unless it’s headed in the right direction. It is only when those ﬁrst hunger pangs hit that our resolve is tested. The game is on and we want a cold brew… we catch a whiff of an open potato chip bag, we quiver, we waver, we crave a smoke, we don’t feel like jogging, biking, curling, gliding, pressing or jerking. The status quo calls us like an overstuffed couch in front of a big screen TV. Yes, yes… dreams and goals are all very good and all, something to aim for, but we can always wait until tomorrow to start changing. Our inner child craves sweets today. There is hope in the knowledge that cravings diminish and eventually go away… but only when resisted over time.

An old proverb says that we should accept those things we can’t change. A better way of saying it would be: Accept those things you can’t improve or can’t afford to improve. After all, a shabby shack you own and live in is far superior to the remodeled mansion the bank owns and you’re thrown out of. A serious New Year’s resolution will always have a cost to become reality. Perhaps that cost will be in money, or time, emotional strain, or discomfort. You need to know your budget in each of these areas and stay within it.

When cleaning a car the last job is the wheels. Tired and all pruned up we kneel humbly and begin to wash away the dirt and grime and the chrome begins to gleam.
