World Languages & Cultures ST. PAUL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY - FALL 2012

The second quarter has come to a close for our World Languages and Cultures classes. Students learned about a second country in our class rotation. (Please refer to the included schedule.) These children experienced hands-on learning activities that included crafts, puppets, stories, music, manipulatives, costumes, and much more. We hope the pictures in this newsletter show some of the learning and fun that happened in each classroom. At the end of November, we turned our focus to the study of our American tradition of Thanksgiving. Our students learned that harvest celebrations are observed in many cultures, but WL&C classes focused specifically on the history of the very first Thanksgiving in America.

During the month of December, we created a "Christmas Around the World" scrapbook. Your child learned how people in Mexico, Sweden, France, and other countries celebrate during the Christmas season. Each child will bring his or her scrapbook home to enjoy and share with you. You will notice that the United States page still needs to be completed. We saved this page for your child to complete at home with you so you can talk about special family traditions. Home Connection: We encourage you to ask your child about the Las Posadas celebration in Mexico. What does Feliz Navidad mean? Ask your child to use their Tomten puppet to explain what this happy Gnome does in Sweden. How does the oldest daughter in

each family help to celebrate St. Lucia day? What is placed in children's shoes in France? What is a Yule log? I would love to hear from parents! Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you have. Blessings, Christy Summey (WL&C JK-1 Coordinator) csummey@stpaulchristian.org
