STEWARDSHIP AT ST. PAUL'S 2024
Annual Stewardship Pam O'Halloran
Thank you to the many households who have made a pledge or gift to the 2024 Stewardship Campaign. This campaign is essential for supporting the annual operating expenses of St. Paul’s during the coming year (as distinct from the capital campaign which supports capital needs and long-term financial health of the parish). As of November 27, we have received 171 pledges or gifts totaling $788,810. This is down significantly from last year at this time when we had received 189 pledges totaling over $910,000. This decline is largely due to the loss of a large number of parishioners over the past year, many having passed away and others who’ve moved out of state. While we are excited to report that 12 new households have made first-time pledges this year, it still takes some time to build back after the loss of several very generous donors. The Budget and Finance Committees are currently preparing a draft budget to present to the Vestry for approval in early January. If you have not yet submitted your estimated giving form for 2024, we encourage you to do so soon. By sharing with the church what you anticipate giving during the coming year, we can prepare a more responsible and responsive budget to ensure the continuation of our most essential ministries. If you have any questions about making a gift or submitting a pledge, please contact Pam O’Halloran at pohalloran@stpauls-church.org. Thank you!

CLERGY REFLECTION
Recovering the Advent Calendar The Rev. Brandon Ashcraft
“A longer Advent helps some Christians prepare for more than Christmas.” So reads the headline of a recent NPR article featuring the Rev. Cameron Partridge, an Episcopal priest who extended his community’s observance of Advent from four to seven weeks this year. And Rev. Partridge is not alone. There is an entire movement called “The Advent Project,” whose sole objective is to extend Advent to its historical length of 40 days (Yes, centuries ago, Advent and Lent were both 40 days!). The movement is driven by a desire to re-frame Advent as more than a countdown to Christmas. More than candles and chocolate calendars. The goal is to unearth Advent’s theological richness and to recover its focus on the great Christian hope: the full manifestation of the Reign of God that will be realized at the second coming of Jesus Christ. If we look to Advent’s historical roots, it was less about anticipating Christ’s first coming in the manger, and more about anticipating his second coming in glory. And if you’ve been paying attention, you will have noticed that our readings for the last three weeks of the Church Year already focus us on this theme, so starting Advent a few weeks earlier would be an elegant solution for reclaiming Advent’s original focus. Our commercial culture pushes us to begin celebrating Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, so keeping an Advent of any length is already a difficult undertaking. What do we have to gain from making Advent longer and shifting its focus to the end times? With wars raging in the Holy Land and Ukraine, never-ending political turmoil
in our own country, immigration crises, and natural disasters raging all around us, there’s no denying that the world is not as it should be. A season that roots us in God’s dream of restored creation and Christ’s reign of peace and prosperity would be a gift of tremendous pastoral value. As the Rev. Dr. William Petersen, founder of the Advent Project has written, “The call is for the Church to reclaim for the sake of its own life and mission Advent’s focus on the reign of God and, in so doing, to hone once again the counter-cultural edge of the Gospel at the very beginning of the liturgical year.” This year, more than ever, we must be intentional about keeping Advent, because it is exceptionally short - only 22 days. Christmas falls on a Monday this year, which means the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve are both on Sunday, December 24th. At St. Paul’s, we will have one, combined 10 a.m. service for 4 Advent that morning and yes, this means to keep 4 Advent and Christmas Eve, one must attend church twice in one day! But there is much to be gained from observing both celebrations. The perennial star of 4 Advent is the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it would be a pity to miss the opportunity to dwell with the Mother of our Lord for just a moment before Christmas arrives. On 4 Advent, we join our voice with Mary’s in her great song, the Magnificat, and together we dream of the world as God envisions it, and as it will one day be. Do not allow the quirk of this year’s calendar to deprive you of this Advent gift!

SHARING THE LIGHT TOGETHER
A New Media Ministry Nathaniel Powell
In our digital age, visual storytelling is a powerful tool that can bridge the gap between our church community and the world. It allows us to convey the warmth, compassion, and inspiration that define our church's mission. We are thrilled to share our new Media Ministry, a team dedicated to capturing the spirit of our church and sharing it with a broader audience. This ministry recognizes the immense potential of visual media to connect, inspire, and uplift. Through the lens of talented photographers and videographers, we can capture the story of our church community like never before. From the joyful faces of our congregation during worship services to the meaningful moments at our community events, every smile, tear, and hug will be captured. Engaging on Social Media Our church has always been a welcoming and inclusive community, and now, our social media platforms will reflect that same spirit. This ministry will be active on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, sharing inspiration, event updates, and messages of hope. We encourage you to follow, like, and share our content to spread our message further. How to Get Involved The Media Ministry is not just about capturing moments; it's about involving our community. We invite all members interested in photography, videography, or social media to join our team. Whether you're an experienced professional or a passionate enthusiast, your contribution can make a real difference.

Photography and Videography: If you have a knack for capturing moments, we'd love to have you on our team. Social Media Enthusiasts: Are you a social media wizard? Join us to help engage with our community online throughout the week. Your creativity is welcome. Livestreaming: We understand that not everyone can attend our services in person, but our ministry has a solution. With livestreaming and videos of our sermons and events, anyone can be a part of our worship experience from anywhere in the world. This initiative has been a great tool to invite people nearby to worship with us. It also ensures that our message of God, love, and faith can reach those who seek it, regardless of physical distance. Spread the Word: Even if you don't have technical skills, you can still support our ministry by sharing our content with your friends and family. Together, we can amplify our message. Let's Share the Light Our church community is built on a foundation of love, faith, and compassion, and we believe that these values should shine brightly for all to see. With our new Photo, Video, and Social Media Ministry, we are excited to embark on this journey of sharing the light of our church's mission with the world. Join us in this exciting endeavor, and together, let's illuminate hearts, inspire minds, and touch souls. Our visual storytelling journey has already begun, and we can't wait to see where it leads us. If you are interested in joining us, send me a note at npowell@stpauls-church.org.

Here are two great ways to seek and offer care: Transportation Ministry • Help parishioners by providing rides to church events, doctor visits, and other appointments. Meal Ministry • Prepare and deliver a home-cooked meal to a church member experiencing a short-term transition or difficulty.

A CAMPAIGN FOR THE FUTURE
Walking In Love Pam O'Halloran
We are enormously pleased and grateful to report that 227 parish households have made a pledge or gift to the Walking in Love capital campaign. The total raised to date is $7,791,000, exceeding our original campaign goal of $6,000,000.
Thank you to the many parishioners who supported the Walking in Love campaign through their financial contributions, volunteer time, and prayers. We especially thank the campaign committee whose dedication and faithful work enabled the tremendous success of the campaign:
The capital campaign was the culmination of over five years of strategic, financial, and facility planning work by parish leaders. Because of the overwhelming support of St. Paul’s parishioners, essential capital improvement projects will be addressed, our outreach impact will be significantly increased, and the parish’s permanent endowment fund will be strengthened to help sustain essential parish ministries for future generations.
