Mission

Vision

St Paul’s High School is missioned by the Canadian Jesuits to educate students as whole persons to become Men for Others and so assist the Church in building the Kingdom of God.

A St Paul’s education is based upon Ignatian pedagogy derived from the Spiritual Excercises of St Ignatius. Our education forms graduates to become lifelong learners who are open to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious and committed to doing justice. St Paul’s is commited to fostering personal responsibility and social justice. To that end, the School strives to ensure that all

qualified applicants accepted on their own merit can attend regardless of their ability to meet tuition costs. This is made possible through the generous contributions of alumni and friends who allow the School to continue to build its bursary program. St Paul’s commitment to social justice is also reflected in its practice of welcoming diversity, respecting the religious and cultural backgrounds of all

and its cooperation with the broader Manitoba communities through service and charitable outreach programs.

Message from the President Dear Friends The year 2011 marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Jesuits in Canada. The mission of the Society of Jesus, the service of faith and promotion of justice and peace to assist the Church in building the Kingdom of God, would never have been possible without the support of the communities to which the Jesuits travelled. Since the Jesuits assumed ownership of St Paul’s in 1931, the School has been part of this vibrant world wide tradition. As an exemplar of this tradition, on 1 November 2011 we honoured His Excellency Gary Doer ’66, Canadian Ambassador to the United States, at the 18th annual Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner. Ambassador Doer’s selfless dedication to service, seen during his time as Premier of the Province of Manitoba and as Ambassador to the US, makes him a true Man for Others. It is my hope that you see the qualities, exemplified by Ambassador Doer, throughout this Report. It attests to the tremendous generosity and support of the St Paul’s community and it is what allows us to continue to provide a Jesuit education committed to developing Men for Others here in Winnipeg. The year 2011 also saw the growth and continuation of a new tradition at St Paul’s of staff, students and alumni participating in international service missions. Groups once again travelled to El Salvador and, for the first time, Ghana, to work with and give back to communities on an international level. This opportunity would not be possible without your support through Annual Giving and programs such as Aeroplan’s Charitable Pooling. In addition to Annual Giving, I am deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from the community for the Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign. We are making progress in reaching our goal, but there is still some distance to go. This Report contains a letter from Campaign Co-Chairs Tony Catanese ’79 and Paul Soubry ’80 with a full update on the Campaign and a plan to complete fundraising. Thank you to those who have already joined us as Partners in the Mission. If you have not already done so, there is no better time to show your support for the School. 2011 was a truly memorable year with many accomplishments for which to give thanks. The Class of 2011 provided one outstanding example of the positive change that members of the St Paul’s community make in the world. The Class of 2011 chose to reduce their graduation festivities in order to donate $2,500 to Cancer Care Manitoba-Kendra’s (McBain) Walk. To recognize and commend the members of the Class of 2011 for their care for others, I initiated a bursary in their name with a gift from the School of $5,000 to help ensure that access to an education at St Paul’s remains open for all qualified applicants. On behalf of the students of St Paul’s, as well as the Jesuit Board of Members, Board of Directors, Administration, Faculty and Staff, thank you for your continuing support and generosity. In Christ

Fr Alan Fogarty SJ

HELP MAKE THE MULTIPLEX A REALITY

2

“If you take a look at the scope of this project, its impact will surely be felt by many future generations of Crusaders. The new facility will provide much needed multi-purpose space for the school. What’s amazing about this building is that so many different users benefit. Students, faculty, alumni and members of the greater Winnipeg community can share in this exciting facility.” -Tony Catanese ‘79 and Paul Soubry ‘80, Campaign Co-Chairs

Become a Partner in the Mission

We have reached a critical juncture in the progress of the Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign and we need your help. The Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign was initiated as a result of the School’s 2004-2007 strategic planning process. At the outset of the Campaign, in consultation with the Jesuit Provincial, a fundraising goal was established with 60% allocated to the construction of a new multi-purpose facility and 40% directed toward the Bursary Program. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of over 200 individuals and foundations, a total of $10.5 million has been raised thus far, $2.1 million of this amount directed toward the Bursary Program. We are confident that through the ongoing Annual Giving Campaign, we will reach our Bursary goal. The $10.5 million raised is unprecedented in the 85 year history of the School. At this point in the Campaign, attention must be focused on capital fundraising for the building in order to address School needs long overdue. Construction began in mid-February 2012 and the MultiPlex will be operational for the 2013-2014 academic year. There is an outstanding need of $2 million to address costs associated with the building, including furniture, fixtures and equipment and $2 million for the Bursary. This is a call to action for our community. St Paul’s needs your support to address the School’s greatest current need. It is only through the generosity of the community that we can complete this project without the need of bridge financing, while maintaining a balanced budget and avoiding debt. On Wednesday, 18 January, the School hosted a Donor Appreciation Reception for all those who have contributed to the Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign. Mr Paul Albrechtsen, the lead donor to the Campaign, announced that he would contribute a further $1 million were current donors to increase their pledges by 50%. The additional $1 million, combined with Mr Albrechtsen’s lead gift of $2 million makes his gift of $3 million the largest ever received by St Paul’s High School. A number of donors have announced that they will increase their gifts to meet Mr Albrechtsen’s challenge. These include members of the class of 1976, who confirmed their class’ pledge to secure naming rights to the Alumni & Friends Hall and who, in turn, challenge other classes to increase their fundraising efforts as part of the Alumni Class Challenge. A number of current parents have also committed to supporting their sons’ classes bursaries.

3 Mr Paul Albrechtsen, Lead Donor of the Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign

As part of the Alumni Class Challenge, alumni fundraisers will be contacting members of their graduating classes to rally support for the Campaign in hopes of achieving a class fundraising goal and securing naming opportunities in the new building. Our goal is to dramatically increase the number of alumni supporting Partners in the Mission.

The generosity of the Campaign’s over 200 donors has been tremendous. It is now time for the remainder of the St Paul’s community to show financial support for the Campaign. In order to raise the outstanding $4 million, we are challenging our alumni, past and current parents, and friends to come forward with a donation. Your support is essential in seeing this project to completion. A three year pledge of $1000 works out to a semi-monthly donations of less than $14. Please show your support for the School you benefitted from so that we can continue to provide a competitive environment for Jesuit education in Manitoba. In the coming months, we will continue to solicit donation from our various stakeholders, officially launch the Alumni Class Challenge, and commence a broader marketing campaign to secure support from all friends of St Paul’s. The Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign is the most far reaching fundraising effort in the history of St Paul’s High School and we need the help of all of our constituents to raise the remaining $4 million for the MultiPlex. Please give today. Sincerely Tony Catanese ’79 and Paul Soubry ’80 Partners in the Mission Capital Campaign Co-Chairs

The Annual Giving Campaign is an important source of funds for the Bursary Fund and School programs. These figures represent the direction of gifts made as part of the Annual Giving Campaign in 2011. They demonstrate the long history of supporting bursaries in the St Paul’s community, as well as other programs that enrich school life and are important aspects of Jesuit education, such as international service missions. Gifts to the general bursary fund are endowed gifts not directed toward any particular named bursary and unrestricted gifts give the School the greatest flexibility to address current needs.

18TH ANNUAL IGNATIAN CHALLENGE AWARD TRIBUTE DINNER On Tuesday, 1 November 2011, the St Paul’s High School community bestowed its highest honour, the Ignatian Challenge Award, to His Excellency Gary Doer ’66. Mr Doer humbly accepted his award at the 18th Annual Tribute Dinner in front of a crowd of close to 1,100 friends, colleagues and fellow alumni at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. In accepting the award, Mr Doer credited his alma mater for forming him and other young men into Men for Others, teaching them to act with “integrity, honesty, with passion and the belief in community and with love for your fellow human being.” Mr Doer spoke highly of his days as a St Paul’s student, the Jesuit training he received and the lifelong friendships he cultivated – even proclaiming St Paul’s the “greatest high school in Canada.” His lifelong friend and previous Ignatian Challenge Award recipient, Mr James Tennant ’66, introduced Mr Doer with anecdotes of their time at St Paul’s while Mr Mark Chipman ’78 spoke of Mr Doer’s accomplishments as Premier and the difference he has made to the Province of Manitoba. In his address, Fr Alan Fogarty SJ, St Paul’s High School President, praised Mr Doer’s service to his community, which he noted as a central tenant of Jesuit education. “St Paul’s works in a discerning and focused way to bring God to our students so that they can become people of competence, conscience, compassion and faith” explained Fr Fogarty. He thanked Mr Doer not only for his work as Premier of Manitoba and in his role as Ambassador, noting that the night was in “honour of his many achievements in the area of service, for and in the care of others, [and] in his personal and community focused campaign for a better world.” Prior to taking up his current position as Canadian Ambassador to the United States, Mr Doer served as Premier of Manitoba for ten years. In 2005, he was named by Business Week as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change. During his time as Premier, he led strategic investments in health care, education and training and infrastructure. The Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner, which raises money for the St Paul’s High School Bursary Endowment Fund, is the School’s annual fundraising gala where friends and alumni of St Paul’s honour those who live with integrity to embody the Mission and Vision of the School. Mr Shawn Alwis ’00, Director of Advancement & Alumni Affairs, thanked sponsors and attendees for their support of the event and the 2011 Tribute Dinner Committee, chaired by Mr Tony Demarin ’84 and Ms Virginia Robertson, for their efforts in helping to make the evening a huge success for St Paul’s High School and the Bursary Program: “Tonight, your support of this 18th Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner helps to ensure that we keep our promise to maintain the accessibility of a Jesuit education in Manitoba. Tonight we are both humbled and honoured by your support.” Additional revenue for the Bursary Fund was raised through the 2011 RBC Tribute Dinner Raffle. This year’s prizes totalled over $30,000. Tickets were one for $100 or three for $250. Raffle sponsors Mr Martin Thibodeau from the Royal Bank of Canada and Mrs Tina Jones of the Tolaini Family joined Mr Alwis on stage to draw the night’s seven prizes. In total, 773 tickets were sold – a tremendous show of support from the evening’s attendees.

GHANA INTERNATIONAL SERVICE MISSION

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Every student at St Paul’s contributes his time volunteering in the community. A central tenet of Jesuit education is the concern for social justice. St Paul’s students, as a requirement of the curriculum, through the Christian Service Program and on international service trips, practice giving back to the community in this way.

MISSION FUND Members of the Maroon & White Society are nominated by Faculty & Staff and appointed by the President to act in the service of others during their grade twelve year. This year Maroon & White is supporting four mission drives: a scholarship in support of students in Loma Linda, El Salvador; the Immaculate Conception Drop-In Centre in the Pointe Douglas area of Winnipeg; Go, a grassroots project originating in Winnipeg that is helping build a school in Rwanda; and IRCOM, a local initiative offering housing to newcomers to Canada during their first year of residence.

In August 2011, a small group of recent St Paul’s alumni travelled to Ghana to help build a school in the Ashanti District around Lake Bosumtwia. The trip was made possible through St Paul’s involvement in the Aeroplan Beyond Miles Program that allows donors to contribute their miles to the School. Special thanks to Johnson Waste Management’s lead donation of 1 million Aeroplan miles and the others who took part in the Beyond Miles Program: Mr Shawn Alwis ’00, Mr Charles Bernstein, Mr Greg Bozyk ’78, Mr Tony Demarin ’84, Mr Eric Johnson, Mr Garry Querel and Mr Karl T Riese ’47.

EL SALVADOR SERVICE PROJECT In July 2011, St Paul’s students and teachers travelled to El Sal- 13 vador to work on a community garden project in the village of Loma Linda. They constructed a large plot to be used for teaching farming techniques to local families who utilize those techniques in their own gardens as a means of protection against famine during the dry season.

CHRISTMAS HAMPERS Each year, the staff, students and parents of St Paul’s donate food, money and gifts to put together Christmas hampers for families from the Christmas Cheer Board and the St Paul’s community that are in need around the holiday season. Last year, 25 hampers were distributed. Thank you to the whole St Paul’s family for taking part in this important initiative.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE The Christian Service Program facilitates volunteer work done by St Paul’s students in the Winnipeg community. By providing students with the opportunity to be actively involved in community projects, the Program assists them in becoming Men for Others in the service of those in need.
