ANNUAL REPORT
YOUR SUPPORT CHANGES LIVES.
THANK YOU! How do you describe a St. Paul’s High School student? Given that every single boy who attends St. Paul’s is unique, it is impossible to come up with a description that would encompass them all. But let’s speculate for a moment. A typical St. Paul’s student is first of all a typical teenager with all of the potential, all of the talents, and all of the maddening inconsistencies that go with that. He is intelligent, although not always well organized or diligent. He is interested in a great variety of activities, but often shy about trying things that take him outside his comfort zone. He is trying to find his identity as an individual, without wanting to stray too far from the herd. He is desperate to fit in and make friends, but often unsure about how to do that without embarrassing himself. He is eager to separate himself from his parents, to carve out his own space and define his own path, but usually quite uncertain about what that looks like.
Knowing this to be true about our students, St. Paul’s endeavours to provide them a safe and nurturing environment within which they can deal with all of that and grow into young adulthood with a clearer sense of who they are and how they can relate to the world around them in a positive and effective way. The enriched and challenging academic program, the engaging and intensive spiritual and religious formation, the great variety of athletic, cultural, artistic and intellectual activities are all intended to address the developmental needs of the boys as they progress through these significantly formative years. That’s why at St. Paul’s we speak more about formation than education because it’s about helping our boys grow holistically. The extraordinarily generous support of the wider St. Paul’s community, of parents, alumni, and friends of the school, makes it possible for us to give our students this expansive, multi-faceted, and stimulating
formation. Every donation, regardless of how small or how great it might be, contributes to the program. Whether it’s through the Bursary Fund, allowing boys who could not otherwise afford to be here to avail of the opportunity, or through the Magis Fund, providing support for student participation in the great breadth of activities, or through gifts to specific programs, strengthening the quality of what they offer, every donation speaks of the donor’s personal support and love for the school and our students. On behalf of our boys I thank all of the donors listed in these pages. Every dollar you have given has made a difference and has helped these boys grow into the Men for Others they are called to become. Thank you and may God bless your generosity. Fr. Len Altilia, S.J. President, St. Paul’s High School

One essential aspect of a Jesuit education is ensuring accessibility to all qualified applicants through our Bursary Endowment Fund. For the 2015/16 school year, the cost to educate a student at St. Paul’s is approximately $13,687. This amount comes from tuition ($8,300) and government funding. Due to increases in tuition, our immediate at St. Paul’s, our immediate challenge is to keep up with the growing demand for bursary assistance. Over the past five years we have increased the amount of bursary funds awarded by 87%. In the 2014/15 school year, close to $500,000 was awarded to 90 students (1 in 7 students).
Currently, the bursary endowment fund sits at $8 million. Our hope is to double that amount over the next five years ensuring that we can continue to serve those students who would like to receive a St. Paul’s education but who cannot otherwise afford to attend. The bursary endowment is what allows St. Paul’s to maintain a diverse student population Today, the cost to fully endow a named bursary is $175,000. Bursary funds are invested in accordance with the St. Paul’s High School Investment Policy and the interest earned will support one tuition per year. All bursaries are awarded to qualified students based on financial need.

In July 2015, a group of 17 students and four staff travelled to San Jose Las Flores for the annual two-week service mission trip to El Salvador. Funds raised through the El Salvador Fundraising Dinner and through individual contributions were used to construct a pool to farm talapia fish and a chicken enclosure for the local school, providing a stable food source as well as a tool to generate food in the remote mountain village. Funds were also raised to contruct a green house when St. Paul’s travels to El Salvador in July 2016.
The Maroon and White Society organizes four Mission Weeks per year to benefit local and international charitable organizations. In 2015, the Mission Fund supported the Immaculate Conception Soup Kitchen in Winnipeg’s North End; Gandhi Ashram School in Kalimpong, India which is known for combatting illiteracy; Humankind International’s Humankind Project, an early childhood centre in the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya; and the El Salvador Scholarship Fund which provides school supplies, transportation and food to students in El Salvador.
The Christmas season can be particularly challenging for many families. Last year, the St. Paul’s High School community organized and delivered 24 hampers to members of our school community and the broader Winnipeg community. Thanks to the generosity of our students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, we were able to brighten the holidays for over 125 people. Hampers consisted of non-perishable food items, personal and household necessities, bus tickets, lunch cards, grocery store gift cards, Christmas presents and winter wear.
