First Past the Post Strikes Again

This October, Quebeckers went to the polls, and the result was clear: the way we vote is broken. Using the first past the post sys tem (electing a person with the most votes regardless of whether they win a majority) has yet again produced results that do not re flect how the electorate voted.

Premier François Legault’s Co alition Avenir Québec won 72% of seats in the National Assembly and essentially 100% of the pow er. Yet, he only received 42% of the popular vote—nowhere near reflecting the historic majority he won.

Four other parties, the Liber

als, Québec Solidaire, the Parti Québécois, and the Conserva tives, each received between 13% and 15% of the popular vote. De spite this, their seat counts dif fered wildly. The Liberals won 21 seats, Québec Solidaire won 11, and the Parti Québécois won only 3. And in the most serious indictment of how we vote, the Conservatives did not win a sin gle seat, despite having nearly identical vote counts as the other three parties.

tionate to the popular vote. In last year’s federal election, seat counts were all over the place. Al most no party managed to have a number of seats proportionate to their share of the popular vote, and Trudeau’s Liberals managed to win—by far—the most seats whilst losing the popular vote.

actual electoral reform. No more empty campaign promises or half-hearted attempts at change. Politicians and citizens need to get serious about electoral reform for the health of our democracy.

On September 25, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) won the Italian election. For the first time since Mussoli ni, a far-right coalition won both houses of parliament and unseated the incumbent left-wing coalition. Descended from the supporters of Mus solini, the party has expressed support for Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, has often attacked the European Union (EU), opposes LGBTQ+ rights, and blames many of Italy’s problems on immi gration. The election has left many questions about both how the new government will change the country, and the future of Europe.

Although party leader and prime minister Giorgia Mel

It is embarrassing that our elec toral system does not represent how Canadians vote. This discon nect is dangerous, leaving Cana dians feeling ignored and apathetic to our democrat ic process. Ap athetic voters lead to disen gagement, one of the great est dangers to maintaining a healthy de mocracy.

There is only one logical solution to fix this issue: it is the time for

Systems that produce propor tional results exist. Single trans ferable vote, party-list, and mixed member systems would each work better to represent the voic es of all Canadians. We need a se rious conversation to find which system would suit us better as a nation, because first past the post is not the answer for Canadians.

For years, Canadians have been consistently unrepresented by their democratic systems. The results of the Québec election are yet another wakeup call that something must be done. We must start a new national conver sation about electoral reform, lest we see first past the post strike again.

oni supports Ukraine in its resistance against Russia, oth er members of the four-party alliance have professed their admiration for Vladimir Putin and have remained conspic uously silent on the topic. The leader of the Forzi Italia, a member of the coalition, said that Putin only intends to install a government of “decent people” in Kyiv, spout ing pro-Russia propaganda. Nevertheless, Meloni pledged during her campaign to con tinue to send arms to Ukraine if elected.

The party has shown disdain for the EU throughout their campaign, pledging to fight the “Brussels Bureaucrats”

and, in the past, hoping to leave the EU. The president of the European Commission has emphasized that the EU has the power to keep coun tries in the Union, prompting many on the right to condemn the president’s comments as “shameful arrogance.” Al though the party has lessened its anti-EU rhetoric, Italy leav ing the EU would be devastat ing for the Union, leaving its fate in fragile hands.

Immigration has also become a hot topic of late. Meloni’s anti-immigration stance has created controversy in the nation by claiming that cur rent immigration policies will turn Italy into the “immigra

tion camp of Europe.” Other members of the coalition, such as Matteo Salvini, leader of the Northern League, have vowed to stop the “invasion” of refu gees. Meloni’s anti-immigra tion stance leaves the future of Italian immigrant policy uncertain.

Giorgia Meloni is a controver sial figure across the world. Her party has its roots in Italy’s dark, fascist past. She supports Ukraine in their fight against Russia, yet she asso ciates with those who idolize Putin. She believes that the European Union is a group of bumbling buffoons but stays conspicuously neutral on whether Italy will remain in the EU. Additionally, the ideas of Meloni and her party often clash with those of her coali tion partners. This all prompts the question: how long will her government stand? But more important: was Sep tember 25 a “sad day for the country” as her rivals believe? Or is it the beginning of a new, right-wing future for Italy?

His Majesty King Charles III

Contributor

HM King Charles III is now King of United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the Commonwealth Realms. The question many are asking is whether he will be a successful monarch. I believe a monarch’s ability to be successful depends on factors such as their benevo lence, their leadership capabili ties, and their ability to rally the nation. HM Queen Elizabeth II possessed all these traits, making her a beloved monarch who not only bettered her country, but the entire world. With the sup port of the people, a monarch can change their country and their world. Will Charles III be able to, too?

Elvis

King Charles III effects positive change with his work. He has started 16 charitable organi zations that raise hundreds of millions of pounds annually. This money goes towards edu cation, environmental sustain ability, and various other areas. He formed the Prince’s Trust, a charitable organization that focuses on supporting youth development, helping them start businesses and teaching life skills. I believe he will gain support because of his environ mental concern and charitable projects.

However, King Charles’ lack of experience as a leader will negatively affect his ability to be a successful monarch. He has spent most of his life waiting to be monarch and now, at 73, he will not have much time to gain experience. He has been preparing for the past 73 years to be King, but his lack of expe rience may harm his leadership

abilities, the very thing a nation needs. However, I do believe he could lead Britain to a new age of environmental sustainability if he develops into an effective leader.

Since he is widely seen as being less charismatic than his mother, he will have great difficulty rally ing the people under a common banner. Queen Elizabeth II had an innate sense of what oth ers want and an extraordinary flexibility to adapt to the shifting whims of the public. A success ful monarch can use the insti tution of the monarchy to unite people for a cause, and King Charles must do so too. Take Julius Caesar as an analogy: he was never actually declared an emperor of Rome and yet unit ed Rome’s people and expand ed Rome’s land, treasury, and power. If Caesar was disliked, he would have been overthrown immediately because he strayed from the standard Roman Republic. Yet he remained as

emperor, because he was likable and capable of uniting the na tion. The importance of a mon arch being liked by their people cannot be understated—King Charles can only effectively lead by uniting the people.

Many have mixed opinions of King Charles, but it is certain that he has the potential to be a successful monarch. He may be able to advance environ mental awareness and youth health around the globe if he is not encumbered by his subpar charismpa. Being monarch after Queen Elizabeth, Charles’ greatest challenge is to leave her shadow and develop an identity for himself. If he adapts quickly and seizes the public eye, he will be able to accomplish remark

Elvis Presley was no doubt one of the most iconic and import ant cultural figures of the last century. He changed the worlds of both music and pop culture, making them more diverse. It only makes sense that a movie would be made to honour his life.

The wait is over: Elvis is out, and it provides a different view on his story and focuses on the unexplored aspects of his life, aspects that many people say led him to his death.

The movie begins with a narra tion by Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. He explains Elvis’ be ginnings in a poor community where he discovered the blues

in Gospel churches. Elvis’ fame begins while touring with a country singer who is managed by Parker. Elvis is known for his vulgar movements and bluesy “black music” (so the public called it). As his fame grows, he signs the Colonel as his manag er.

public.

Parker later convinces Elvis to play at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. The hotel agrees to clear Parker’s gambling debts if Elvis keeps returning. Parker works Elvis into exhaustion, pumping him with drugs be tween shows to keep him ener gized.

By the end of the film, Elvis discovers the Colonel is a fraud without a passport, so he fires him, but gets sued. He is now broke and is forced to hire the Colonel again until his death. The movie ends with Elvis’ emo tional last performance where he is worn out but sings with all his heart.

cause the song “Trouble” had not been released at the time of the concert and there was not a mosh pit on the stage as it is portrayed in the film.

I enjoyed this film for many reasons. It is well-filmed and uses impressive camera angles and creative transitions. I ex pected the movie to be centred primarily on Elvis, but it focuss es a lot on the Colonel, which is interesting. Tom Hanks’ perfor mance really makes me despise the character as he manipulates Elvis, and all the actors embody their roles incredibly well.

To avoid being arrested for his vulgarity, Elvis serves in the army and meets his future wife, Priscilla. He returns to America and is more accepted among the

The film takes an interesting perspective on Elvis’ life story but does not stay completely accurate to history. In one scene, Elvis disobeys the Colonel by playing the song “Trouble” and by using vulgar dance move ments at a concert while he is supposed to be a reformed Elvis. This scene is not accurate be

However, I believe that there could be more emphasis on mu sic in this film. There are some scenes where recent music was incorporated into the movie. It just does not feel right to have modern music in a retro atmo sphere.

Despite these small shortcom ings, the film is extremely well done and helps reveal the vile ness of Tom Parker.

The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power

tually, the gods kill Morgoth, and crumble his armies because he had become too powerful. Sauron, as Morgoth’s student, goes into hiding. Sauron’s hiding is the end of the first age and the beginning of the second age.

The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power is visually stunning and entertaining but lacks coherent dialogue. The show is accurate to the lore written by J.R.R. Tolk ien, and does not fail to enter tain the audience.

The show takes place during the second age and the rise of Sauron. Sauron helps forge the twenty Rings of Power described in the backstory of the Lord of the Rings series. This takes place after the fall of the Dark lord Morgoth, Sauron’s Master. The elves chase Morgoth from Va linor to Middle-Earth to defeat him after he steals precious jewels called the Silmarils. Even

First, the visuals are amazing. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power had the most visual effects shots for any production. You can see these spectacles

Chess Cheating Scandal

through the amazing scenes the visual effects teams were able to create.

They used the lighting incredibly well and had lots of time to per fect their shots. They were grant ed more time for production than other recent pro duction from Marvel where lack of time and attention is visible on the screen. The Rings of Power Visual Effects Team had plenty of time to make great, quality shots. And they did.

Second, the show is very accu rate to Tolkien lore. Sure, they did change some things in the show to make it more mysteri

ous. If they had done the exact same thing as the source materi al, it would have been less inter esting. Production was closely monitored by the Tolkien Estate to ensure the lore was accurate. They also brought back old char acters from the past lore such as Durin, Gil-Galad and, Cele brimbor to create an immersive world.

The show has one fatal flaw: the dialogue was not good. It felt odd at times and was quite clunky and often missed the mark. Overall, the dialogue felt more modern than medieval, and it felt unnatural.

I personally enjoyed The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. People are entitled to other opin ions, but I would rate this show a hearty 7.5/10.

In the world of chess, there is nothing worse than a cheater. They rig games to win money and fame, using computers to crush their opponent in ways never seen before. Cheaters are exceedingly rare in chess and unheard of at the top levels. This was not the case for Hans Nei man, an American chess Grand Master who was recently ac cused of cheating by none other than the chess world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway.

Carlsen is the most dominant player in the world. He plays in a revolutionary style. That is why it came as a shock when Hans Neiman, a young Grand Master, not only beat Carlsen but abso lutely demolished him.

Although unprecedented, no

one expected that Neiman might have cheated. This was until Carlsen released a statement saying that he was planning to withdraw from the tournament because of alleged cheating. He went on to say he believed “someone” was cheating not only because they won in such a dominant fashion, but also because they seemed completely calm in the most complex posi tions and at the most important moments of the game. He never specifically said that Neiman cheated but everyone knew whom Carlsen was referring to.

This accusation led to a large-

scale investigation into Neiman. They looked at all his online games and his surprisingly rapid rise to greatness. It was discov ered that Neiman increased his rating significantly faster than anyone before him, including Carlsen! It was also uncovered that seven years prior, Neiman was confirmed to have cheated in an online chess tournament and again two years later. Nei man explained himself saying that it was a mistake and that he only did it to increase his rating to play at higher levels.

However, these discoveries prompted the question: if he had

already cheated twice in his life, was it possible for him to have done it again?

As it turns out, the answer is yes. Around one month after Nei man was accused of cheating, chess.com—the largest chess website on the planet—released an article that confirmed that Neiman cheated in at least 100 more games than he led the world to believe. In one of them, he won thousands of dollars. This article released by chess. com shows that everything Neiman said in his apology was fake. He did not only cheat to in crease his rating: he won money from his dubious ways.

Although this is horrible, there is still no proof that Neiman cheated on the board against Carlsen because no one caught him in the act. It is not even known how Neiman may have cheated. We may never know whether Hans Neiman cheated in this game, but with the statis tics and evidence from the past, it is likely that those unscrupu lous actions might have been the case.

The Casting Controversy of the Super Mario Bros. Movie

Contributor

Is Chris Pratt really the right choice for Mario? Following the star-studded casting announce ment for the Mario Movie at Nintendo Direct in September 2021, there was outrage and confusion as to why the role of Mario, the lovable plumber, was given to Chris Pratt.

An extremely talented man wellknown for Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy, the announcement left many diehard Mario fans confused and furious as to why the original voice actor for Mario, Charles Martinet, was only given “sur prise cameos” throughout the movie.

The casting choice for Mario is a massive job. The actor has even larger shoes to fill to rep resent the popular plumber. The failure of the Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993 left fans with much disappointment and a loss of confidence in Ninten do. Appearing first in the 2021 Nintendo direct trailer was the King Koopa himself, Bowser, voiced by Jack Black, conquering the Penguin Kingdom, likely to steal the star hidden inside. Then the trailer cuts to Mario flying out of a pipe into the mushroom

kingdom where Toad greets him, with Mario saying, “What is this place?” and “Mushroom King dom, here we come!” Seeing as how in the trailer Mario express es confusion about where he is, his origin is not in the Mush room Kingdom, but instead, he is likely from “New Donk City” a clone of New York City in the Mario universe. It sounds noth ing like the lovable plumber that we all know and love. Don’t get me wrong, Chris Pratt is one of my favourite actors, but he seems like an odd choice for the role. In the trailer, we hear Mario speaking in an accented voice. It is not Italian, but instead closer to Chris Pratt speaking in a “Brooklyn accent”, while some have compared it to Pratt’s normal voice.

The Pope’s Apology: What Comes Next?

I felt a little confused as to how Chris Pratt’s Mario sounds, and we will have to get used to his take on the character. Playing a collection of Mario games over the span of a decade has made me used to Martinet’s take on Mario, as well as millions of other Mario fans. Although Martinet is not voicing Mario in the movie, he will go on to voice Mario in the video games to come.

Among the casting announce ment was who would be tak ing the role of Foreman Spike. Foreman Spike is a character we know very little about. However, devoted Mario fans may recog nize him from the video game Wrecking Crew (1984) as Ma rio’s boss, which gives us a clue as to Mario’s origin in the film. In the Wrecking Crew, Mario works as a demolition worker, which may be Mario’s occupa tion in the movie. The Super Mario Bros. film releases world wide on April 7, 2023.

On Monday, July 25, 2022, Pope Francis delivered a historic apology for the Roman-Catholic Church’s involvement in the Res idential Schools system. From the 1870s to the 1990s, 150 000 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children between the ages of four to sixteen were taken from their families and forced to at tend residential institutions run by the Canadian government and the Catholic Church. The primary goal of these institu tions was to convert Indigenous children to Christian and Euro pean ideals by stripping them of their culture and identity. These institutions have created deep inter-generational trauma that is still felt today.

Pope Francis and, more import ant, the Catholic Church were yet to officially take responsibil ity for their involvement in this system until this year. This past spring in Rome, the Pope met with a contingent of Indigenous leaders and Residential school survivors and their families. This was followed up by an official apology on Canadian soil in July. The Pope’s apology was signifi cant for survivors and their fam ilies. It took a lot of work, time, and courage to make this apolo gy a reality. The Catholic Church has taken the first step towards reconciliation by acknowledging the truth, but what are the steps to follow it up?

The Pope’s apology, while his toric, left out meaningful infor

mation. The Catholic Church was, in-part, responsible for afflicting psychological, physical, and sexual abuse on the chil dren who attended Residential Schools. The Pope did not make clear mention of the Catholic Church’s role in the abuse. The Pope also did not admit the guilt of the entire Church, but rather blamed the “evil” of a few mem bers who were directly involved in this system.

Apologizing is the first step towards reconciliation, but it is the first of many. To continue the journey towards reconcili ation, there are two important follow-up measures the Catholic Church should now be taking: 1) it should officially release all documents it holds related to residential institutions, and 2) it should pay the reparations it owed under the 2006 Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

The Catholic Church is in pos session of hundreds of docu ments containing important information about the children who attended these institu tions and the employees who

worked in Residential Schools. Some branches of the Church, such as the Jesuits, have already released their documents. It is now time for the entire Church to do the same. This would help give Indigenous families and survivors closure about lost loved ones and to seek account ability from institutional staff that are still alive. The Catholic Church owes $25 million CAD in reparations under the 2006 Residential Schools’ Settlement Agreement. The Church was somehow legally absolved of this responsibility in 2015 during the final days of the previous Harp er government. As such, this restitution has never been paid. Yet, it is a relatively small sum of money for the Catholic Church, a multi-billion-dollar entity.

The Catholic Church has given survivors hope for reconciliation with the Pope’s historic apology. Now, the Church needs to take steps to back up this apology if it wants to achieve true recon ciliation with Indigenous fami lies and survivors of residential institutions.

To the St. Paul’s Community,

First, we want to thank you all for your support during a tough campaign and for electing us to be your Student Council President and Vice-President for the 2022-2023 school year. We would like to start by say ing that we are committed to bringing back the spirit, energy, and events that were lost during the pandemic. Our full Student Council is finalized and we, as a team, have been working hard to plan a great year. Our coun cil consists of Carter Shippam, Jackson Zuk, Aidan Wuerful, Davis Low, Jacob Phillips, Na than Macdonell, and Dante

Cameron-Thibodeau. We feel that each member plays an important role on our council and that this is crucial to helping achieve our goals for this year.

Having been in a pandemic since grade nine, this year’s grade twelves have only had a glimpse of what the true St. Paul’s experience is. As a re sult, we are trailblazing our way

through the year with new ideas, reinventing previous ones, and bringing back old traditions.

We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished thus far and are excited for what is to come. Despite all the work that the Student Council does, nothing could be possible with out student participation. With that being said, we would like to encourage everyone to be more than just an “8:30 to 3:15” student. Get out and join clubs, join sports teams, get involved, and participate in events. When it is all done you will regret only the things you did not do. A final thing we ask is that you have an open

Celebrating 80 Years of The Crusader News: In the Beginning...

Around 80 years ago, on the frigid morning of December 15th, 1941, a new chapter be gan in the history of St. Paul’s College, and chatter about “The Crusader” spread throughout the halls. Consisting of four pages, this newspaper was the first ever official newspaper of St. Paul’s College. Starting off with a captivating article titled “Catholic and Socialist are Con tradictory Terms” and wishing a Merry Christmas to the St. Paul’s community, Volume 1, Edition 1 of The Crusader also includ ed Christmas greetings from the rector and a festive poem. Highlighting the successes of the St. Paul’s Dramatic Society, and various sports teams around the institution, The Crusader had humble beginnings and was run by a competent team

of 11 students under the leader ship of Paul Adams ’42, the first Editor-in-Chief, who became the pioneers of The Crusader. It also aimed to form strong bonds with alumni, including various articles about St. Paul’s alumni and their successes. But most in terestingly, it included advertise ments! Promoting products such as sporting equipment from the Hudson’s Bay Company, and lo cal dry cleaning companies and breweries, The Crusader worked to form strong corporate con nections as well.

line of the paper’s first edition of the year was “Seriousness in Studies Stressed by Rector”, a concept which, I must say, is relevant today as well.

to their families.

The Crusader continued to grow year-by-year into a publication to which both students and staff contributed. In 1942, the head

Furthermore, as the Second World War came to its peak, many volumes of The Crusader published between 1942 and 1945 had substantial portions dedicated to honouring former students who were killed in action, as well as alumni serving in the Armed Forces. In fact, in 1942, the newspaper mentions that over 650 alumni of St. Paul’s College were serving in the Canadian armed forces, a substantial amount, con sidering the college was only estab lished 16 years prior. In 1944, the 60 alumni and former staff who had lost their lives in the war were also commemorated and condolences were extended

The Honour Roll was also pub lished in The Crusader for many years. Back in the day, the re quirement for the Gold Honour Roll was 85% and was achieved by only one or two students per grade. Alongside this, there was a sports section in The Crusader consistently featuring the suc cesses and rivalries of the var ious Crusader athletic groups, primarily focused on rugby and football. The Debate club was also in full swing back then, with Volume 5 of the newspaper mentioning the championships of St. Paul’s debaters various times.

The history of the glorious Cru sader News that we all admire today is one that is extensive, and for justice to be done to it, must be explained thorough ly. Now with a team of over 50 contributors, and in its 76th edi tion, The Crusader had humble beginnings, but amassed a rich history, which we hope to ex pand upon in future editions.

The Discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope

Since the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) on Christmas Day 2021, human ity has learnt new and exciting information about our Universe. The JWST is fueling discussion among experts and enthusiasts about the formation of stars, galaxies, planets, and the true nature of the observable uni verse.

After its initial calibration, the JWST started to scan its sur roundings. Within a few days of operation, it discovered a new galaxy called GLASS-z13 which was further away than any other galaxy ever observed.

Apple Event

The galaxy is a small cluster created 13.78 billion years ago, only a few million years after the Big Bang.

The JWST is giving us a new lens into some iconic galaxies and clusters including the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is an 11.2-billionyear-old galaxy located 160 000 light years away from Earth.

The JWST is identifying the structure and formation of ancient stars within the galaxy,

further developing our under standing of the evolution of stars as well as the systems surround ing their birth.

The JWST’s ability to see galaxies through an infrared lens is help ing scientists in the discovery of very old stars in our Universe. Since it can see objects which ex isted long ago, we have learnt a massive amount of information about a specific period called the “Cosmic Noon.” This is the point in the Universe’s history where a vast number of stars were born.

One of the most fascinating discoveries made by the JWST so far is the discovery of the internal structure of the galaxy named ic-5332.

It was first discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope many years ago, which observed it to be a large spiral shaped gas cloud composed of a myriad of different stars and colours. When the JWST observed the galaxy with its infrared instru ment, it found a galaxy made of a skeletal network of large spiral ing columns of gas, resembling a spider’s web.

It has been nearly a year since the JWST launched into orbit and began to captivate the world with its findings. If the James Webb Space Telescope was able to discover all of this in a year, imagine what it might reveal in a decade. What else remains undiscovered or just out of our reach?

The Apple Event in Septem ber 2022 had many significant announcements. Among the announced are the AirPods Pro 2, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro, the Apple Watch Series 8 SE 2, and the Apple Watch Ultra.

The new AirPods Pro 2 looks evolutionary, not revolution ary. The only visible differences between the first generation and the second are an extra vent on the side of the earbuds, a slightly thinner case, and a spot to attach a lanyard (sold separately of course). The main differences lie inside, with the new Pros housing an H2 chip, which Apple claims to have over twice the power of the H1. On November 23, 2021, at 12:21, NASA launched the Double As teroid Redirection Test (DART), which served as the first test of new defenses against asteroids colliding with Earth. DART was a collaboration between NASA, SpaceX, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and many others.

DART’s mission was to inter cept Dimorphos, an asteroid with a diameter of 160 metres, weighing roughly 11.02 billion pounds, equivalent to nearly 1 370 889 fully grown African elephants! Dimorphos orbits a much larger and heavier asteroid named Didymos which has a

In the past year, we have seen great advancements in new tech nologies and spacecraft which have let us discern more about the universe around us.

Just as the James Webb Space Telescope, which launched a month after it, DART utilized revolutionary technology in cluding the Hall Ion Thruster

which helped it reach its target 11 million kilometers away.

DART is truly the first of its kind and, while there are many more things to build and discover, DART will always remain a tes tament to human creativity and ingenuity.

In the 2015-2016 Premier League season, the impossible happened. A team that spent almost all the previous season struggling at the bottom of the table was now at the top, crowned the champions of the Premier League. This team was Leicester City F.C., a small club when compared to the English footballing giants of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Man chester United, and Tottenham Hotspur. When Leicester City, the underdogs with a 5000 to 1 chance of winning, won the league, it was known as “the miracle” by fans and analysts from that day on. But when you look at Leicester City now, it is quite apparent that the team is only a shell of its former self.

The team took a heavy hit when

goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel transferred to OGC Nice, a French Club, for £1 (about $1.5 million CAD) this summer. As the club was recovering from the damage, defender Wesley Fofana left for Chelsea for a £70 million (about $107 million CAD) con tract. Even with strong players, including Jamie Vardy, James Maddison, Patson Daka and Youri Tielemans, Leicester City lost 1-0 to Manchester United. Although this was not a game that Leicester saw itself winning, the loss was not surprising. What really showed fans the true state of their team was a 5-2 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, a small team relative to Leicester’s size, one they should have de feated.

Leichester’s losing streak con tinued with a 6-2 loss to Totten ham. This loss was more hurtful because Leicester had scored the first goal, and by the end of the first half the score was 2-2 with Leicester still hoping to win the match. However, after halftime, Tottenham made a crucial change, subbing in Son Heung-min, that destroyed the

game for Leicester. Within 14 minutes of being on the pitch, he scored a hat-trick and put the nail in the coffin for Leicester. The next game was against Not tingham Forest. If Leicester lost this game, there would surely be pressure on manager Brendan Rodgers as Nottingham Forest and Leicester were neck-andneck on the points table. Leices ter managed to come out on top with a 4-0 win, moving them to

£15 million (about $23 million CAD). Even though Wout is not a bad centre-back, it is quite apparent that he cannot replace Wesley Fofana and is not the solution Leicester needs.

19th place in the league. A.F.C Bournemouth beat Leices ter 2-1 the very next day. With the latest game against Crystal Palace a 0-0 draw, it was quite evident that there was some thing very wrong with Leicester City. The club has already tried to solve this problem by signing Belgian defender Wout Faes for

The problem lies with Leicester’s current keeper, Danny Ward. The Welsh goalkeeper was transferred from Liverpool to Leicester 4 years ago, acting as backup while Schmeichel was with the club. Ward only became the primary goalkeeper after Schmeichel’s departure. During this season, Danny Ward has conceded 24 goals with only 2 clean sheets in 10 games played. Though Leicester has been relegated multiple times before, the last time they were relegated was way back in the 2001-2002 season. Since then, Leicester has established itself as a sturdy Pre mier League team. If Brendan Rogers cannot fix the issue at the back of the net, then he should start looking for his next job, be cause he will be given the sack. Rogers has the rest of the season to fix this problem, and Leicester City fans all over the world are praying that he does.

Canada: First time back in 36 years

It has been a while since the Canadian Men’s National Soccer Team qualified for the group stage of the FIFA World Cup. Their last and only showing was in 1986, with a lackluster per formance losing all three games in the group stage. However, 36 years later, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup set to take place in Qatar, a re-formed Canadian Men’s National Team will be returning to the big stage in No vember. Team Canada is aiming to perform better than their last appearance. Canada’s soccer team plays in the CONCACAF league along with the best teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

Within the league, only the top three teams will qualify to the group stage, and the fourth team will proceed to the interconti nental qualifiers. Throughout the CONCACAF qualifiers, Cana da was a dominant force going undefeated until their last three games. The Canadian squad placed first in the CONCACAF league, beating strong teams like the United States and Mexico.

Over the years, the Canadian team’s roster has improved sub stantially. Canadian striker Cyle Larin was ranked second inter nationally for most goals scored throughout qualifying. He also ranked first in CONCACAF with fellow Canadian striker Jonathan David ranking second. Topping off the strong squad, Alphonso Davies is considered the best player in CONCACAF, and is one of the fastest players on the international level. He plays for Bundesliga league club, Bayern Munich, while also being the star of the Canadian Soccer team.

A Step Closer for Valour

After an unprecedented mid-season transition, Win nipeg’s Valour FC was able to edge into a playoff position in the final weeks of league play. Unfortunately, that all ended in Calgary on Thursday, October 2nd, after a lop-sided 2-1 loss to Cavalry FC - their fourth winless game in a row.

However, fans must not focus on the negative as this club has come a long way from previ ous years. Perhaps it is just the increasingly improving and intriguing nature of the Ca nadian Premier League, but it seems Valour FC, through new signings, new manager Phillip Dos Santos, and the rampaging post-pandemic spirit, has driven this team to become elite com petitors.

This year, the squad acquired Billy Forbes, Matteo de Brienne, and Walter Ponce, who provid ed more depth in the attack. The three proved to be crucial to the team’s offense, having lost Valour’s all-time top goal scorer and Winnipeg’s favourite Kiwi, Moses Dyer, to an injury and a mid-season suspension.

De Brienne, especially, can be highlighted for scoring one of the league’s top goals of the year, when he performed an acrobatic “bicycle” kick. De Brienne also proved to be one of the best youngsters in the league, having an immense engine and drive.

He often refers to himself as trying to replicate opposing a “Goliath,” executing dominance through sly power and strate gy, much like that of the Bibli cal confrontation between the Philistine warrior and under dog, David. In addition to these brilliant rookies, Sean Rea, on loan from C.F. Montréal, provid ed the Valour’s main offensive threat, having been nominated for player-of-the-year at just twenty years of age. Fans cannot disregard their stellar captain,

Since the 2022 World Cup is Canada’s first time back in so long, many fans and players were expected to get a new kit for the World Cup but, instead, Canada will be the only team in the group stage to wear the same jerseys as the year prior. With the World Cup qualifiers ending in March, it was important to maintain form and play friendly matches before the World Cup. However, the Canadian squad refused to play Panama over a pay dispute, and the match against Iran was cancelled over geopolitical issues.

After qualifying for the World

Cup, the team was placed in Group “F” along with Moroc co, Belgium, and Croatia. This seems to be a tough group to compete against as all three of these teams qualified for the World Cup in 2018. Morocco made it to the group stage while Belgium and Croatia advanced into the knockout stage. Belgium placed third in the tournament, while Croatia were runners-up after their loss to France in the finals.

My prediction: I speculate that Canada will beat Morocco but will be able to handle neither Belgium nor Croatia, leaving our national team eliminated in the group stage. It is, however, possi ble for an upset allowing Canada to slip through into the knock out stage. Nevertheless, I do not have any hope for Canada in the knockout stage as the team will be going up against fifteen of the best teams in the world, and their inexperience will come into play.

Daryl Fordyce, as well as his skilled colleague, Diego Gutiér rez, who have proved successful in binding the squad’s lines this year.

their strong defence and lack of offensive attack. However, this is largely just Manager Phil Dos Santos’ style of play, trusting a five-man back line. Throughout the season, his plan started to prove promising. Valour even saw themselves winning five times in a seven-game stretch; however, the final games of the season saw them fall short, which was truly unfortunate after the unforeseen progress throughout the season.

Having many of the league’s best central defenders and wing backs, Valour rarely concedes more than a mere goal. Some notable favourites include the (arguably) league’s best, Brett Levis, Cuban Andy Baquero, Croatian refugee Stefan Ceba ra, 6’4 Rocco Romeo, and the list goes on. Nearly impeccable defence has allowed for con sistently low-scoring games. Disregarding the fluky 6-1 win over league-leading Atletico Ottawa, Valour often draws or wins by small margins. For in stance, five of Valour’s ten wins came from 1-0 scores, a result of

Valour ended with a home record of 7-4-3 (wins-drawslosses) and an away record of 3-3-8. Although ending poorly, Valour fans can only look at this season as a gateway to the next. For the first time in their history, the club has developed a gritty reputation, contended with top teams, built depth in their squad, and played like a passionate group of professional men. They have been an entertaining team to watch, representing Winni peg with flair. Hopefully they can bring valour back to the pitch next year and take home the North Star Shield.

Eliud Kipchoge: The Fastest Man of All Time

that for just 30 seconds? Life is rarely a game of short sprints, and perserverance is the true mark of quality, both in life and in sport.

the ’92 Olympics, who has been his coach ever since.

Who is the fastest man of all time? Seems like a simple ques tion with a simple answer: Usain Bolt, multiple Olympic champi on and world record holder for the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. This answer is wrong, since speed over such a short distance doesn’t mean squat. The true king of speed is Kenyan dis tance-runner Eliud Kipchoge, 2-time Olympic marathon champion, the world record holder in the marathon, and the first man to run a marathon in under 2 hours.

Imagine if a Formula 1 race was just one lap around the track. Wouldn’t it be boring watching

Let’s take a look at Kipchoge’s speed and speed sustainaility at his 2022 world record marathon performance in Berlin. With a time of 2:01:09, Kipchoge ab solutely smashed his previous world record, set in 2018, by almost 30 seconds. Throughout the race, he averaged a pace of 2 minutes 52 seconds per kilo metre (4:37/mile). This is equal to running across a Canadian football field, from goal-line to goal-line, in 17.3 seconds. He re peated this feat 20 times, holding that pace for about 6 episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine without commericals. Kipchoge’s story is an inspirational one. He was raised by his single mother in mountainous Western Kenya, and he ran 2 miles to school daily. At 16, he met Patrick Sang, a steeplechase silver medallist at

He quickly rose to prominence on the track as a top 5000m runner, earning a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics which he upgraded to a silver in Bejing four years later. However, in 2012, he failed to even qualify for the Kenyan Olympic team finishing 5th at the 5000m trials. Nevertheless, he perservered and decided to take his talents to road running, breaking the course record at his very first half marathon in Copenhagen.

Since transitioning to marathon running , Kipchoge has won 15

to prove even more.

of 17 marathons. He is one of only two men to ever run under 2:02 in the marathon, and holds 4 of the 5 all-time best marathon times in history. As part of the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in 2019, he attempted a sub-2 hour mara thon. He succeeded, in a time of 1:59:40; however, the time didn’t count as a world record because Kipchoge used pacers, special fliuds, and even a pacecar. To top it all off, Kipchoge achived dominant victories at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathons, something only three runners have accomplished.

Even at 37, Kipchoge has not reached his peak. He will likely be dominating for many years, perhaps setting his sights on Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, or running sub-2 hours on a world record eligible course. Regardless, his future accom plishments will most certainly put his current feats to shame, firmly cementing his position as the fastest man of all time.

Roger Federer, often referred to as the “Swiss Maestro”, is the greatest tennis player of all time. Federer holds the record for the most ATP singles titles, winning twenty Grand Slams, including eight Wimbledon Titles, as well as two Olympic medals. These titles alone are not what make Federer the greatest of all time. His greatness lies in his unwav ering sportsmanship and com mitment to the game of tennis.

Federer’s great achievements claim him the nickname “The King of Grass.” This title was won through making extraordi

When Federer first began play ing tennis, the style and vari ation that he displayed had never been seen before; the use of volleys and a wide range of different shots helped him win points with ease. His skills on the court made it seem he had invented the game of tennis. As Federer’s career progressed, he realized that it was more difficult to keep up with the future stars, so he designed a new system to win points more efficiently and conserve more energy, striving

And so Federer always tried to win more—and he did, even when it seemed like there was nothing left for him to prove or to win. In 2014, Patrick McEn roe commented that Federer should retire on top. Federer did not retire until this Septem ber after winning five Grand Slams and ATP titles after that year, holding the record for the most ATP titles in history. This work ethic and determination and defiance of expectations is why Federer is a role model for athletes.

On-court accolades are not the only thing that make Federer so great. As of now, Roger Federer has donated over two-million dollars to supply children liv ing in poverty with meals, and he has helped open schools to educate thousands of children in Malawi. This off-court work is all done through The Roger Federer Foundation. Federer has said multiple times that his charity and off-court work is what he is most proud of. Feder er uses his platform to support positive change.

Roger Federer holds many records and titles, but these records and titles are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to measuring his greatness. Rather, his greatness lies in his unwav ering sportsmanship and com mitment to the sport of tennis. Federer has had countless ath letic accomplishments, and he has always strived to be great not just athletically, but as a whole person. That is what makes Fed erer the greatest of all time, and on behalf of all tennis fans, we will miss you, Roger!
