Time for change at the UN? James Brennan ’21 Chief Editor
I’ve always thought that we need a Canadian as the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Not to dive into clichés and stereotypes, but we have a solid track record of producing great leaders on the world stage: people like Lester B. Pearson, Roméo Dallaire, Chris Hadfield, and Stephen Lewis come to mind. Canada has consistently been a key contributor to peacekeeping missions, humanitarian efforts,
emergency relief, and global development. So why haven’t we run the UN? Throughout the UN’s 75-year history, there have been nine secretaries-general, hailing from a variety of countries, including Norway, Peru, South Korea, and Ghana. In February, 34-year-old Arora Akanksha made history by announcing that she’d be the first person to challenge an incumbent secretary-general. While her candidacy might seem like a long shot, there are reasons to celebrate this shake to the system. After spending her early life in India and Saudi Arabia, Ms. Arora (her family name) came to Canada to pursue administrative studies at York University. From there, she went on to work as an audit coordinator for the United Nations Development Programme in New York City. Ms. Arora’s platform is simple: it’s time for a change at the UN. Too much of the UN’s budget is wasted on administrative costs and bureaucracy instead of ac-

him to stop. For nine minutes and 29 seconds, Chauvin suffocated George Floyd, resulting in his death. Protest erupted internationally demanding justice for George Floyd. tual solutions to problems. Her three main promises are an end to the refugee crisis, concrete action against climate change, and expanding access to technology and education. This includes more funding for humanitarian solutions, youth empowerment, sustainable development, and improvements to internet access around the globe. She believes in a new generation of leaders, female empowerment, and enabling the UN to live up to its original promises. Her opponent is António Guterres, the current secretary-general. The 72-year-old is a former Portuguese prime minister and former UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He is running for his second term after a contested election in 2016. Guterres has the support of the UN establishment-types, and his election to a second term is still seen as incontrovertible. For someone to be considered an official candidate, they must be sponsored by at least one UN member state. Ms. Arora has spoken with the
Canadian government to request its support, but she (so far) does not have it. The Canadian government should nominate Ms. Arora to show that we are unafraid to challenge the status quo and provide a new vision for the UN. Many people have become disillusioned with the UN, thinking it’s just a good-for-nothing bunch of political hacks that would rather obstruct than make progress. While there is some truth to that, the UN is the only international organization that brings together the countries of the world, so I believe reform is better than renunciation. This 2021 secretary-general election is riddled with flaws—Ms. Arora has slammed it as a “hypocritical sham”—but if the UN wants to show its commitment to fairness and transparency, they’ll let Ms. Arora run.

Why we’re not in a dystopia Israel Okunnu ’23 Conrtibutor
Dystopian societies are what people fear. Some may even say that we are living in one. But I am here to boldly say that that is false. We are not living in a dystopian society. The main characteristics of a dystopian society are totalitarian government, loss of individualism, complete environmental destruction, and technological control. It is quite clear from the above stated characteristics that our society isn’t dystopian. I will be focusing on the most major aspect of such a society, a totalitarian government. Our government is not totalitarian. Totalitarianism is the political concept that the citizen should be totally subject to an absolute
state authority. Here in the West, we do not have a totalitarian government; rather, we have a democracy.
We could not live in a dystopian society because saying we do would indirectly imply that the human condition in the past Society at large is a democracy, was substantially better than it and people can make their own is today. safety of the students. Ducks are an extremely protective species, and while the father duck, who usually tends to be the more protective figure in the family, is not present, the mother is still there, and once a female duck lays its eggs, it also becomes extremely protective. If a potential predator approaches, there is a high chance that the mother duck may go ahead and bite the predator. Further, if a duck becomes familiar with a figure, there is also an increased chance that the duck will bite you. A duck bite may result in a painful bruise or a wound that may require medical attention, so while the shutting down of the Quad is
not ideal, it was necessary to ensure the safety of the students. While this is the first time that there has been duck eggs laid in the school Quad, it probably isn’t the last. Ducks are known to nest in the same place annualy, so there is a chance that the duck which was nesting in the Quad may return next year. With the eggs now hatched, the Wildlife Rehabilitation Office has been contacted. They safely transported the mother duck, as well as her ducklings, to a location with easy access to water. Regardless, I can’t wait to see the adorable ducklings (and to enter the Quad again)!
Anime Review:Yasuke, the First Black Samurai Eric Fontaine ’22 Contributor
Yasuke is a real life black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga in 1579. Nobunaga was one of the most important feudal lords in Japanese history and a unifier of the country. In the anime, Yasuke is an African man who was taken to Japan as a servant yet became a samurai. During the war his general commits Harakiri (a Japanese ritual suicide), because his men were losing terribly in combat. Trying to escape his past, Yasuke moves to a small village. But unfortunately for him, he can’t let go of the turmoil and pain. This anime excellently tells the story
of Yasuke, and the extra anime flair of mechas and magic makes for an all around amazing show. The animation is fantastic, and the story telling will keep you pondering, “What could happen next?”Yasuke will keep you engaged the entire time you’re watching. The story itself deserves five gold stars out of five. And don’t even get me started on the fight scenes; everyone knows that every great anime needs phenomenal fight scenes. Let me tell you:Yasuke has some of the most exhilarating and gruesome fights that I have ever seen in my life. Seeing Yasuke using his samurai skills to eliminate enemies is such a thrill.
renowned bassist, vocalist, and anime nerd, sings the opening. This opening is very unique for an anime intro, forgoing the usual high energy tracks that usually accompany the credits for a spacey—but not vapid— track. This fits perfectly with the tone of Yasuke, an anime with exciting, but not over-thetop with its action. This mellow opening falls more in line with the somber mood of the show. The scoring of the rest of the anime switches between a traditional Japanese style and slow hip hop instrumentals. Flying
Lotus know perfectly when to employ both of these styles, with neither overpowering the other or becoming overused. The show is a landmark for black representation in anime and it’s great that so many talented black musicians were able to contribute, with names like Denzel Curry appearing on the official soundtrack. Despite it being new, Yasuke has quickly become one of my most highly recommended anime to watch and it might crack my top five favourite animes.
A very interesting aspect of Yasuke is the phenomenal music accompanying the anime. Yasuke is scored by producer Flying Lotus, famous for his instrumental records which sport features from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Thundercat. Thundercat, a

Review: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier John Ergon Golpe ’24 Contributor At long last, Disney Plus’s original seriesThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier has concluded. The six-episode-long adventure starring Avengers Sam Wilson, AKA the Falcon, and Bucky Barnes, AKA the Winter Soldier, adds to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) mythos. Despite what the trailers and TV spots had us believe, the show was not going to be just a buddy cop adventure series (but would still have its fair share of that style, thankfully). Much to our surprise, Sam Wilson, despite Steve Rogers’s wishes to inherit the mantle of Captain America towards the end of Endgame, thought that he was not worthy
of carrying the star-spangled vibranium shield. Instead, he decided it would be best if it was retired in a display at a museum in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to properly honor the weapon’s legacy. And instead of taking up the mantle, he would join the US Air Force, still using his moniker of The Falcon. Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes would retire his infamous alter ego of the Winter Soldier and live his days in the U.S.A., going through government-mandated therapy to deal with the guilt of taking the lives of his victims all those years ago. Bucky even makes his own attempts to right his wrongs, befriending the father of one of his victims, hoping to tell him the truth, but never going through with it until the very end of the series. It was a promising character arc for Bucky Barnes but would ultimately be under-utilized in favour of furthering Sam’s arc, much like other concepts and characters this show uses.
One painfully prominent example of this show’s problem of under-utilization i the main antagonists of this show: Wyatt Russell’s Captain America, and Karli Morgantheau, played by Erin Kellyman. Each one of these actors did an impeccable job with their performances but their characters were forced to share the spotlight. This left us with the phony Captain America receiving an undeserved redemption arc in the climax, resulting in his new vigilante role as U.S. Agent. Karli ended up being completely outshined by him and Zemo, who was most definitely the better antagonist among the three. This show would have benefited immensely from the addition of at least another two episodes, like
The Mandalorian and WandaVision, so that
these characters could have their arcs fully realized. There was also the subplot of another returning character, Sharon Carter, secretly being the Power Broker of Madripoor. The reveal at the final episode was disappointing due to lack of surprise, but to make her a villain is an interesting place to take the character.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has its strengths and weak-
nesses, but despite its downsides the show fulfilled its job of introducing Sam Wilson as the new Captain America, and is a fun side note from more substantive Marvel properties.

Unlike other anime where the designs are generic and somewhat predictable, Oda’s are unique, and that’s one of the best parts of the show. Every character and their design are idiosyncratic, whether it is Zoro’s green hair or Usopp’s long nose. This only adds to their far from boring powers.
Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is a manga where pirates sail to different islands, each with a unique inhabitants. This makes every story arc memorable. There are spooky islands, winter islands, even islands in the sky! The imaginative and creative work of Oda is endless. Oda also has a way of creating the most fascinating villains with captivating personalities and quirks, making each encounter with Luffy a treat. One of the things that Oda likes to do is improve his disliked characters, Areturing them to the series later. Captain Buggy is a great example of this. The Three Gifts of Tomorrow Myles Cesario ’21 Religion Editor
In the Catholic Church there are three theological virtues that are interconnected and ultimately define the Christian life; they are faith, hope, and charity. These are the virtues that the world must see at the end of not only this pandemic, but this academic year. Three virtues that will set the world on a new path of understanding and virtues that are summarized in two main themes: freedom and love. Faith is a virtue that allows humans to believe in something that, either scientifically or logically, makes no sense whatsoever. A Christian example is the Resurrection. By every scientific and logical means when you’re dead, you’re dead, especially after three days. But to Christians, we believe that Christ rose from the dead, beating sin and
fulfilling the scriptures. But faith can have practical applications. When we look at this pandemic, we all have faith in the fact that the vaccines will help, and the pandemic will end. But by looking at the present COVID numbers, logically that seems unlikely. But we humans are hardwired to believe in things that may not even be practical. That is faith.

As summer approaches and we prepare for our future lives, let us discuss charity. The importance of charity to others is essential to Catholics, for as St. James said, “faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead” (James 2:17). As this pandemic ends, hopefully, we will each be called to give to our needy brothers Like faith, hope is a virtue that and sisters just as we’ve done allows humans to believe in a in this pandemic. Universal Apostolic Preferences Conference Myles Cesario ’21 Religion Editor The Universal Apostolic Preferences, UAPs for short, are four preferences that the Society of Jesus wishes all its apostolates to keep in the back of their minds in their decisions for the next 10 years. The four UAPs are: • To show the way to God through the Spiritual Exercises and discernment. • To walk with the poor, the outcasts of the world, those whose dignity has been violated, in a mission of reconciliation and justice. • To accompany young people in the creation of a hopefilled future.
• To collaborate in the care of our Common Home. On May 18 and 19, Jack Carswell ’22, President Booth, and I attended a virtual conference hosted by Fr. Len Altilia, former president of St. Paul’s High School and the current Provincial Assistant for Secondary Education (PASE) for the Jesuits in Canada. The conference brought together schools, organizations, and camps all over Canada that are under the umbrella of Jesuit apostolates that work with young people. People from Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba—all to discuss their institutions’ work to promote the UAPs. All institutions were given the chance to speak on their work and many groups reflected on activities they did before COVID-19 but also how they have shifted gears because of COVID-19. Some ideas ranged from schools
growing their own food, organizations sending letters to government officials, holding virtual symposiums, and others even helping seniors on the computer by allowing them access to a school’s computer lab. But through everyone’s discussion people learned something new, not only about what they could do individually but as part of a larger network, as Jesuit apostolates.

Behind the Mask: How mask recycling works Baljot Rai ’24 Contributor Over the past 15 months, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of all sorts have become rather prominent objects in our day-to-day life, the most common example in our lives being masks. Since the start of this pandemic, wearing a mask in public has become a customary action, be it disposable or re-usable. Ever since earlier this year,
disposable masks have become an increasingly fundamental aspect of our lives. All students at St. Paul’s High School have been wearing triple-layer medical grade disposable masks. To prevent these masks from ending up in landfills, the Environmental Action Committee decided to address the problem. Throughout the school, various TerraCycle mask recycling bins have been set up to allow for proper disposal. TerraCycle is a private U.S. based company, with its headquarters in Trenton, New Jersey. This company recycles difficult to process materials into new, raw materials that can be used in new objects. TerraCycle has a multi-step recycling program for disposable masks specifically. The first step is the collection process. All PPE are collect-
ed in TerraCycle’s Zero Waste boxes. Once the box fills up, it is sealed and sent to a TerraCycle recycling location in whichever country the PPE was collected in. Next is the check-in process. When the sealed box arrives at a TerraCycle Material Recover Facility (MRF), it is checked-in and weighed. Then, the boxes are quarantined for a minimum of 72 hours, to ensure the protection of the staff members who will be dealing with the material. TerraCycle stores all disposable masks until appropriate volumes of material for processing have been received. The waste is then sorted into various different categories based on material composition (rubbers, metals, non-woven plastic, elastane, etc.) by utilizing a wide array of sorting technologies including manual sortation, size separation, sink/ float, optical, air density, gravity, magnetic, etc. The different materials are then sent to third-party processing partners, which recycle
the material into usable forms. Non-woven plastics, such as non-woven polypropylene, which is the fabric used for filters in face masks, is recycled into plastic pellets and granules. Further, the metals in the masks are manually removed and sent for smelting into new bar stock and metal sheeting. The rubber portion of the earloops in a disposable mask is ground into a fine powder, and mixed with recycled plastics as an additive to provide flexibility and malleability to products. Each part of the mask is put to use, making this program beneficial for our Earth and very eco-friendly. Clearly, simply recycling our masks goes an extremely long way in protecting our environment. We must all do our part to protect our Earth!

On the back of this, Musk has built a following that rivals massive celebrities and which is seemingly far more loyal and willing to spend their time defending him. His focus on cryptocurrency is especially ironic considering the incredible amount of energy consumed by the technology, much of which is produced by fossil fuels. Musk’s behavior will likely continue to cause harm while he is completely insulated by a massive cult of personality, unless the issues that have driven people to support him are dealt with in a more tangible way.

The Raptors ended up missing guys like OG Anunoby, Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Norman Powell, Gary Trent, Chris Boucher, and especially Kyle Lowry, who missed 26 games this season. Before the onslaught of injuries and having to quarantine, the Raptors were fourth in the Eastern conference above playoff teams like Boston, Atlanta, New-York, and Miami. During that time of the season the Raptors beat teams like the stacked Brooklyn Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks, and later in the year they beat the defending champion LA Lakers without three of their starters. The last reason why Toronto struggled was Aaron Baynes who was an anchor holding the Raptors back. He was brought in to be a solid rebounding and defensive presence in

So yes, the Raptors are back in the lottery again after they were at the bottom of the league in defensive and offensive efficiency. But things aren’t as bad as it seems as they now have a chance at some great prospects in the lottery like Cade Cunningham or Evan Mobley. Don’t be surprised if Toronto rises back to the top after this season.

Dear readers, My time here at The Crusader News has come to a close. I’m so proud of the work we accomplished over this past year. We aimed for four full editions and managed to complete five. We published over 100 articles, crosswords, and comics. We launched a new website (thecrusadernews.ca) to share our content with a wider audience, and we have great plans in mind for next year. In September, we aim to come back even stronger. Hopefully, there will be more events at the school for the newspaper to cover. If that’s the case, we’ll have articles about school sports games and clubs and everything we love doing.
It’s been a pleasure working with the entire newsroom team. Whether you were one of our loyal editors or a new writer, you were a crucial part of our operation. We started off with only eight of us, but we’ve grown to a great group of over 35. I couldn’t do it without all the support and great work you’ve put in this year. I thoroughly enjoyed your wide-ranging interests and writing abilities. If you missed editions, remember that they’re all available on our website. If you’d like to write for us in the future, please contact Donovan Martin, as he will be the Chief Editor next year. We have our editorial team in line and we’ll be ready for new writers, so let us know if you’re interested! You can write about virtually anything. Also, I cannot take credit for the edition you’re reading. I edited the first four this year, but I passed on the torch to Donovan Martin for this final edition.
