THANK YOU! PARTNERS IN THE MISSION CAMPAIGN SPECIAL EDITION
from the president Dear Friends and Supporters of St. Paul’s, It is one of my happier duties to write to you in the context of this edition of The Crusader magazine in which we acknowledge with deep gratitude the generosity of our benefactors. It is one more opportunity for me to say “Thank you” to all of you who have contributed to the Partners in the Mission Campaign. Established in 2010, the campaign was intended to raise the funds necessary to construct the MultiPlex and to augment the Bursary Endowment Fund, thus enabling the school to respond more effectively to the needs of our students. Fr. Alan Fogarty, SJ, then President of St. Paul’s, and Mr. Shawn Alwis, the Director of Development, directed the fundraising with the outstanding support of the campaign committee who worked tirelessly for its success. Thanks to their efforts and your generosity, over $10 million was raised for the building and over $3 million for the bursary endowment. To acknowledge this tremendous support, we have installed a donor recognition board, in the Paul Albrechtsen MultiPlex entrance way, which was officially unveiled on September 25. While the campaign has been brought to a close, there is still work to be done to raise money to pay off the outstanding debt on the building of approximately $1.7 million. We will work our way slowly toward that goal but not with the same intensity that was involved in the campaign. We are happy to focus attention on the wonderful generosity of the St. Paul’s community from which our school has benefitted so greatly through this campaign. The following pages are a tribute to the strength of our community and to the kind and magnanimous support that you have shown us. We are humbled by it, and we are encouraged by your willingness to contribute to the school to work ever more diligently in providing the highest quality of formation and education for our students. On their behalf I thank you for your support. And I pray that the Lord will bless you, as he promised, “in full measure, pressed down and flowing over.” Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Fr. Len Altilia, SJ President

A STRONGER BURSARY PROGRAM “As a graduate from St. Paul’s High School and being a recipient of the bursary program, I can truly say that my life has changed because of St. Paul’s. I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for everything that St. Paul’s High School has done for me and giving me the full, ‘St. Paul’s experience’.”
-Bursary Recipient, Class of 2013
In 2009, prior to the commencement of the Partners in the Mission Campaign, the St. Paul’s High School Bursary Fund sat at a respectable $4 million. With that size of investment, the school was able to help, financially, approximately 62 families totalling just over $250,000. The average gift that was awarded to families in the years prior to the start of the campaign was approximately $4,033.

Number of Bursaries Awarded (1:6)
As the strategic plan took focus and became more clear, it was determined that the Partners in the Mission Campaign could not only be for capital improvments to the facility but also to enhance the Bursary Fund. Thus, a dual-focused campaign began to take root and an ambitious goal of $4 million was set to double our Bursary Fund. More than five years after the start of the Partners in the Mission Campaign, and with the generous and selfless gifts of so many donors, the Bursary Fund is now stronger than ever with over $7.8 million invested. What does that mean for families who require financial assistance? The increase in the principle of the Bursary Fund means that more interest can be generated through investment, giving the school the ability to award more financial assistance to qualified families. In the last school year, nearly 100 families, close to 1 in 6, received some form of financial aid. With an average gift of $5,000, close to $500,000 was dispersed to qualified families, ensuring access to a quality, well-rounded education for all. This could not have happened without the unparalleled generosity of so many in our community. Thank you. Your support changes lives.

90% of our goal has been reached!
“St. Paul’s provides not only a wonderful foundation for advanced education but also perspective for making better decisions.” For many families, St. Paul’s High School is a natural fit, providing a morally wholesome foundation, proven academic success and a variety of extracurricular programs. The Crusader sat down with John and Margaret Proven and their two sons (and recent alumni) Andrew ’12 and Mark ’15, to discuss the impact of St. Paul’s on their family and why they chose to support the Partners in the Mission Campaign
WHAT MADE YOU CONSIDER ST. PAUL’S FOR YOUR TWO SONS?
WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU RECOGNIZE IN ST. PAUL’S STUDENTS?
It was a natural decision for us to encourage our boys to apply for entrance into St. Paul’s. It was evident how the school supports the development of young men and we had come to interact as friends with parents who as graduates, raved about the experience during their time at the school and who continued to demonstrate the values we would hope our boys would ultimately acquire.
The saying, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ is so true and there is no better ‘village’ than the St. Paul’s community for developing young men into grounded, grateful and productive individuals. Consider Manitoba’s many positive community and professional role models who have come from the many decades of St. Paul’s graduating classes. There is something remarkable about a school that has consistently fostered the development of young men who distinguish themselves in our community and project a high degree of empathy, competence and caring. You can see a level of maturity and respectfulness being developed early when interacting with the boys at school events.
WHY SUPPORT THE PARTNERS IN THE MISSION CAMPAIGN? We supported the Partners in the Mission Campaign because the campaign’s mission of facility development and in particular the bursary program resonated with our family. As mentioned, the school has many followers and its community is large. Modern facilities were needed to house events that could accommodate the community. There is no question that the creation of the MultiPlex has had a tremendous impact on the school’s ability to host school and sporting events, and many other important community gatherings. The Bursary Program is such an important pillar of the school’s role in its community. I (Margaret) was directly involved with the bursary giving program and witnessed first-hand the need and the positive impact the provision of tuition support had for the inclusion of boys whose families needed it most.
WHAT MAKES ST. PAUL’S UNIQUE? Any school boils down to its facilities, processes and people. There is no question that the people are the strength and real differentiator, including not only current students and faculty but also the many graduates and other supporters who remain deeply connected to the school community. Very few institutions of any sort can capture and maintain the support of people from years past. Witness the very robust alumni connections and activities. St. Paul’s is clearly worthy of that support and has done a tremendous job of fostering it. The development of young people is what the school does so consistently well that it has earned its loyal fan base and following.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A ST. PAUL’S EDUCATION? The benefits of a St. Paul’s education become increasingly evident as our boys have gone on to post-secondary education. Andrew is currently enrolled in the Asper School of Business and preparing for an international study term at Rotterdam beginning in late January, while Mark is beginning his studies in University One. Capable young people will find their path ultimately, but St. Paul’s provides a wonderful foundation, not only for advanced education but also perspective for making better decisions. We witnessed for example the very positive impact of the Kairos experience on our boys and how their thinking expanded to include broader reflections on life’s possibilities and where they can best contribute. St. Paul’s takes the brave step of challenging students to celebrate their strengths but to think well beyond self-serving interests.
WHAT VALUES DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH MOST? How can one improve on the statement ‘Man for Others’? The values that resonate most all lead to that singular objective of developing young men who think more broadly than to their selfserving interests and consider how their personal gifts can be applied to support others.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE In 1954, a 24-year-old Danish mechanic, with little knowledge of the English language, arrived in Winnipeg with the enthusiasm to explore someplace new. With vision and hard work, Paul Albrechtsen transformed a single-truck, water hauling operation in Virden, Manitoba into one of the nation’s largest transportation and hauling companies. Over the span of his career, Mr. Albrechtsen has owned a diversified group of companies, primarily in transportation and resort development, employing over 3,000 people in Canada and the United States. Mr. Albrechtsen was first introduced to St. Paul’s High School by employees and business associates and immediately recognized there was something unique about the school, something that “brings out the ambition to learn.” When Mr. Albrechtsen’s sons Christopher ’83, Robert ’85, Scott ’00 and David ’02 attended St. Paul’s, he witnessed the impact the school had “on so many students and how many benefit so much from the school. Business associates that I know, who attended on bursary, cannot say enough about what St. Paul’s did for them. These individuals are leaders in our community and now give back philanthropically.” With an admitted “soft spot” for St. Paul’s, Mr. Albrechtsen has left a lasting imprint on the school, providing future generations of Crusaders with access to outstanding facilities and a stregthened bursary program. Mr. Albrechtsen funded the creation of one of the school’s most beloved outdoor spaces, the Albrechtsen Amphitheatre, as well as supported the Fr. Crouch, S.J. Bursary, Albrechtsen Bursary and annually sponsors the Tribute Dinner at a platinum level, where proceeds benefit the Bursary Fund. In June 2013, thanks in large part to Mr. Albrechtsen’s commitment and generosity, St. Paul’s officially opened the Paul Albrechtsen MultiPlex, representing the cornerstone of the Partners in the Mission Campaign and the school’s strategic plan. Mr. Albrechtsen’s gift of over $3.3 million represents the largest investment by an individual in the history of St. Paul’s and was instrumental in the creation of the MultiPlex. The Paul Albrechtsen MultiPlex has breathed new life into the school and has quickly become the school’s gathering place for large scale events and celebrations, athletic competitions, fitness training, wellness and alumni events. Every month, 600 students, 70 faculty and staff, dozens of visiting teams and hundreds of parents, spectators, alumni and friends make use of our cutting edge facility ensuring active participation and engagement for years to come. As his grandson James ’16 approaches graduation, Mr. Albrechtsen can’t help but beam with pride at the success James has had on the football field and in the classroom. “The school really brings out the best qualities in kids.” On behalf of the entire St. Paul’s High School community, thank you!

“Providing education is critical for the growth and prosperity of our community” For Craig White ’00, supporting the Partners in the Mission Campaign wasn’t just about creating much needed multi-use space for our students or the unique draw the Class of ’76 Alumni and Friends Hall brings to decades of alumni, it was about providing an education for those who cannot afford to go.
THE IMPACT OF ST. PAUL’S: It’s hard for me to even quantify the effect that St. Pauls has had on my life. Aside from the obvious (and very important) things like the friends I made and the great education I got, I think the most important thing that I’ve gained from my years at the School is the desire to truly be a “man for others”. In another context that saying could just be disregarded as a cliché, but at St. Pauls those words really mean something.
INVOLVMENT AS AN ALUMNUS: I’m very grateful that I was given that opportunity to get involved with the board, as it gave me an opportunity to give back to the school, while at the same time getting a great education on how the School is managed and what challenges it faces going forward. It certainly gave me an appreciation for the complexity of the issues that come up when managing a school like St. Pauls, many of which go unnoticed by the general community of the School. The efforts of the administration, the faculty and the volunteers are significant and I think that often many people don’t get the credit they deserve for keeping the operations of the School running so smoothly year after year.
WHAT MAKES ST. PAUL’S UNIQUE? The community. There are lots of great schools that provide a great education, have great teachers, great sports teams, great extra curriculars and great students. The difference between those schools and St. Paul’s is our school is truly a community with an identity and values that go on long after you graduate. No other school in the province and very few in Canada get such great support from their alumni and that’s something we should be proud of and something that we need to maintain and grow.
SUPPORTING THE PARTNERS IN THE MISSION CAMPAIGN: The simple facts were that our school had outgrown its existing facilities and something needed to be done. I think the new MultiPlex goes above and beyond the basic needs of providing a bigger facility for the use of the school. It is truly becoming an ongoing destination for our community with many great events being held there all the time. The facility itself is beautiful, and the draw it will have on alumni to come back to the school is unique. I also want to mention that as part of the Partners in the Mission Campaign, the bursary fund has been significantly expanded. With the ever increasing cost of education, I think this is probably the most important thing we accomplished in the campaign, even though it is maybe less flashy then the new building. Providing education is critical for the growth and prosperity of our community and it shouldn’t just be for those lucky kids who can afford to go.

It’s simple. Be a man for others. This should be universal no matter what your background is or what your beliefs are. If you truly work to do this in your life, both yourself and your community will be the better for it.
LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY! We invite you to leave your legacy as part of St. Paul’s history, and its future, by personalizing a seat in the Richardson Gymnasium. The Crusader Bleacher Seat Sale gives alumni, students, staff and friends of St. Paul’s High School an affordable and meaningful way to be a part of the Crusader legacy. Each seat will feature a permanent decal which will be printed with your name or the name of a friend or loved one whom you wish to honour or memorialize. Decals can be a memorable way to recognize a graduating student, alumnus, parent or friend of St. Paul’s.
