HOME SWEET HOME
Creating the ideal living space means something different to everyone. It reflects individual tastes and personalities, and for most the end goal is to turn a house into a home. You can go with the latest styles or tailor your décor to reflect your individuality. Whether your space is for one person or a family will guide your decisions as well as the purpose of the space. Even pets (often considered family) can affect some design elements.
We spoke with industry experts about the latest trends in their fields, and what homeowners might need to know before starting a project.

What trends are you seeing in the home design industry?
Today’s design trends stem from a historic style, and are being channeled into spaces in new ways. Some styles that I personally have been loving recently are the mix of old and new, and the use of collected and vintage pieces throughout the home. One of my favorite aspects of the design process is incorporating personal pieces from a client’s travel. It brings interest to a space and helps tell the story of the people who live there.
What are the hottest colors right now?
I am seeing a wide assortment of colors being used. I am gravitating towards earth tones, creamy warm whites, and bluegreens. I also love natural stone pieces with a ton of texture, especially travertine and onyx.
What is your favorite part of the home design process?
My favorite part of the design process is the early planning stages because it’s when I can be the most creative and push the boundaries a bit with different design concepts. I love being able to help a client bring their vision to life and create a space that they love to spend time in.
What is the most challenging part of designing or redesigning a home?
There are always unforeseen issues that arise during a renovation, such as timeline delays or unexpected project costs. An important role of a designer is helping to problem solve when these issues do arise, and acting as a resource for clients to keep the project moving forward successfully.
What advice would you give a homeowner who is considering designing or remodeling their home?
It’s important to find a team of people who you trust to help guide you through the process. There are so many small details and decisions that go into a renovation, so having a collaborative team is key.
Custom spaces within the home, whether a closet or office, can be challenging to tailor to specific needs.
For insight, SPL spoke with a designer who has specialized in this arena for 18 years.

What are some of the hottest trends you are seeing in your industry right now?
Natural colors are a growing trend but white is still in the lead. Mid-century Modern (think Frank Lloyd Wright) is all the rave and you must “light up” your closet and cabinets with ribbon or puck lighting. Add glass doors and you’ve got it styled. Also, while custom closets are growing in demand here in Florida, there's also increased demand for pantry systems, entryways, entertainment centers, home offices and garage cabinetry.
What is one of your favorite design projects?
My most recent favorite project was turning an extra bedroom into an office/large closet. It is gaining in popularity and is called the “cloffice.” Working from home has become the new normal for many and you might not have an entire room to dedicate for the office so we are blending an office in a closet or a closet in the office. I want my clients to enjoy their space whether it’s for work, family or play.
Are you seeing trends in certain color schemes this season?
I like to design with a timeless style and not follow too many trends. That being said I’m seeing brass accents, colorful and/or textured cabinetry and open shelving. Wood in its natural raw state is trending, and creams and browns are back.
What is the most common reason(s) your clients want or need to redesign space in their home?
Common reasons my clients want and need me, and Closet Factory, is to get beautiful, custom cabinets. I ensure that their closet, office, entertainment center or bar will become a functional, organized, and totally stylish space. I collaborate with my clients to design the perfect fit for the way they live every day. My designs create usable space and turn a home into a sanctuary with a place for everything and where everything is in its place. I call it the art of organization.
What sets Closet Factory apart from other companies?
First, Closet Factory builds totally custom cabinets right here locally. We are a family business building cabinets since 1983. When it comes to creating custom solutions that are imaginative, well organized and satisfy your design sensibilities, we believe the process must begin with a partnership between the client and designer and each project is a collaborative effort. Together we will create a storage system specifically designed for the way you live and the items you store. And then we style your cabinets to fit seamlessly into the aesthetic of your home.

What many homeowners may not know is that there can be issues hidden in or around the house. These are not necessarily the pretty parts of a home, but problems with functionality can cause major unseen and potentially costly problems. We asked a local pro how to identify and solve problems that occur with aging cast iron pipes in older homes.
Tony Diana, Advanced Plumbing Technology www.chooseapt.com
What are the signs a homeowner should recognize that can indicate a failing system?
Slow drains, frequent back-ups, gurgling sounds, or a sewage, smell can all indicate problems.
What are the benefits of trenchless technology vs. traditional/older replacements?
Extreme cost savings to the homeowner is the main benefit. Replacing plumbing using traditional systems causes massive damage to the home. Our website has a cost savings calculator that helps homeowners realize the money and time they can save. Our trenchless technology takes two to three days. Traditional replacement takes two to three weeks when factoring in the plumbing repair and cosmetic repairs.
Tell us about your company’s expertise/licensing in the rehabilitation of old pipes.
APT is the largest residential pipelining company in Florida, completing over 600 jobs per year. The trenchless technology is our specialty where other plumbing companies dabble in it.

What is a key piece of advice you would give a homeowner that has a failing system?
Call us as soon as possible for our free inspection. Unfortunately time is not on your side when most of these systems have severe deterioration.
