COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 6 Although we are now in April, I am hoping that you and your family had a Happy Easter Holiday. As of this writing, all of our sailors have completed the 2018 St. Petersburg-Habana Race and are home safe and sound. Past Commodore Richard Winning reports that we had 18 boats sailing plus several support boats. While in Cuba, the boats sailed in a parade along the Malecon to Habana Harbor and then raced from Morro Castle back to the Hemingway International Yacht Club. We were blessed with good weather and the regatta was a resounding success! The results of the St. Petersburg-Habana Race can be found in this issue on page 4.

This month is also the start of the 50th Year and Golden Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol Race to Mexico. So far we have 32 boats signed up to make the journey to Mexico. Registration is April 26th and the start of the race takes place on Friday, April 27th. Good luck and Godspeed to all the sailors participating in this very historic race! All members are again invited to fly down and join us in the week long festivities in beautiful Isle Mujeres.

I would like to remind everyone that our Reinstatement Offer to past members of the Club will soon be coming to a close. This offer consists of a special Reinstatement Fee of $500, plus prorated dues through the end of our fiscal year (September 2018). To date, we have welcomed over 40 past members back to the SPYC! If you know of any past members who would like to rejoin our great club, this is an opportunity not to miss! Applications must be received by April 30, 2018; please contact our Membership Director.

Reinstatement Offer Ends April 30th The Reinstatement Offer* is soon to expire. This offer has been very exciting and the members who have reinstated are so happy to be back “at home”, to see long-time friends and to be reinstated with their original membership number! The offer consists of a Reinstatement Fee of only $500, and pro-rated dues through the end of our fiscal year (September 2018). Applications must be received by the April 30th deadline. Congratulations to SPYC‘s Chip Merlin and the crew aboard“Merlin”, the famous Bill Lee custom 68’sled, for taking both Line Honors and 1st Place in the Spinnaker class of the 2018 St. Petersburg – Habana Race. This year’s race kicked off with an entertaining Habana Race Street Party, followed by 284 nautical miles of varying sailing conditions as the fleet raced towards a spectacular welcoming by the members and staff of Club Nautico – Hemingway International Yacht Club de Cuba. As always, a special“Thank You!”goes out to all the volunteer organizers of this world-class event! What is the SPYC Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a game of chance, Club tradition, and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks (Downtown) and show off their well-curated boat themes. (Examples: Gilligan’s Island, Viking Raiding Party, Top Gun). Upon arriving at the Club they will check in and get a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 6-7 different stops in which the boaters will travel to, collecting a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats must visit each stop in the time allotted. Upon returning to the Club, each participant will turn in their tokens for poker cards and play a 5-Card Poker hand! Prizes

For three days in early February, nearly 190 boats from throughout the United States descended upon St. Petersburg, each with hopes of experiencing a taste of SPYC’s extraordinary hospitality and exceptional race management during the 2018 Helly Hansen St. Pete NOOD Regatta. With varying conditions ranging from light southeasterly gradient winds to 15+ knot sea-breezes, the visiting sailors went home with smiles on their faces and plenty of stories to tell. Despite some challenging conditions for the race committee, the nearly 75 SPYC volunteers pulled together to efficiently manage four full courses, which allowed plenty of great races spread across the entire fleet. A huge “Congratulations!” goes out to all the SPYC sailors who took part in this regatta, especially Diane Fowler and Michael Zonnenberg, who won the Sonar and Lightning classes, respectively. The St. Petersburg Classic Regatta by Gloria Davis Mark your calendars for this 9th annual premiere event! It is a single race open to boats that were built before 1998 and at least twenty feet overall length. Boats may select Fun, Cruising, Spinnaker or Non-Spinnaker. One design entries with at least five boats will also be accepted. This Cinco de Mayo-themed regatta will be a weekend of fun and frivolity. Dock your boat at the Club and party on Friday, May 4th; social hours at the docks and the Club. On Saturday morning (May 5th) meet your competitors, your race committee and other important individuals, who will talk about your contribution to our community.

Then, at 1:00 pm that day will be followed by a few hours on Tampa Bay, and back to the docks for more socializing and fun. Dinner and awards will begin at the Club at 5:30 pm. This event raises funds for a St. Petersburg original, “Meals on Wheels”, and attracts major sponsors. Saturday evening will be filled with many opportunities for awards and great bargains. The trophy for the entry that assembles the most funds resides in the Club, and is waiting for a new name! (The prior winner will not be competing this year.)

Broad Reachers

On February 23rd, the Broad Reachers held their last FWSA Interclub of the year. There were 12 sailors representing the Broad Reachers, Bitter Ends, Dinghy Dames, Luffing Lassies, Salty Sisters, and T.I. Tackers. First place went to Salty Sister Tove Kullman, 2nd place to Broad Reacher Joanne Simmons, and 3rd place to Luffing Lassie Sue Davidson.

Tight Race

Broad Reacher PRO, Gloria Davis, ran an incredible race under tight conditions with the main dock fully taken up by very large yachts. There were many Broad Reacher volunteers there to launch all the boats, so no sailor had to put her own boat in the water. At the Beach Club, Kerrie served a wonderful lunch for 18 ladies and everyone left with a smile on their face! The Broad Reachers are starting to get ready for this year’s Rainbow Regatta to be held on April 9th at Boca Ciega Yacht Club. The Broads are not only entering six sailors this year, they are also co-chairing the event. Sailing this year for the team are: Joanne Simmons, Sarah Richards, Gwen Mann, Debbie Walcutt, Katie Rodgers, and Heather Lalanne. The girls have been practicing for the Rainbow on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We were pleased to have Heather Lalanne’s husband Charlie attend our practice on March 3rd to coach the girls. He was extremely helpful and critiqued each sailor during lunch. Charlie and Diane Fowler will continue to coach each Wednesday Tove Kullman & Sue Davidson Race Committee and Saturday, weather permitting, until the regatta. Welcome Aboard!!! … Our February“Frostbite” cruise turned into a Pre-Valentine cruise instead because we had great weather for our Feb 9-11 weekend at Marina Jack’s in Sarasota. Ken & Corrine St. Jean, our February Port Directors, arranged an awesome weekend for the twelve boats and one iron dinghy couple who made the trip. On Friday, we had our usual docktail gathering under the canopy with a“warm-up your heart”cocktail provided by the St. Jean’s. We enjoyed a nice gift bag and a round of Happy Birthday to Corrine, 2 Charlottes, and Steve. Afterwards, some went to dinner while others watched the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. On Saturday, we enjoyed the Saturday Farmer’s Market as well as the fabulous 30th Annual Downtown Sarasota Festival of the Arts. That afternoon, some shopped for new boats (because that’s what we do). We ventured downtown for dinner that evening before everyone returned home on Sunday.

On February 21st, the Salty Sisters held a “Mother Ducky” race. Everyone had so much fun that another is planned for the near future! The winning teams were: 1st place – Carol Hansen, Faith Andrews-Bedford, & Angela Treinan. 2nd place – Anne O’Dell, Debbie Walcutt & Donna Papa. 3rd place – Lisa Avila, Marti Cochran, & Stefanie Stevenson. Because it was a group award, each team had to “share” the chocolate prize! Captain Gina Bowden-Pierce expressed her appreciation to all who volunteered to help with the NOOD regatta. She acknowledged Diane Fowler who won 1st Place in the Sonar Class!!! Ellen Pavone recognized Lisa Avila for her rescue when Katie Rodgers flipped Lisa’s Sunfish. Lisa was presented with the new “Rescue at Sea” charm and Katie received her “Flipper” charm. FWSA News: February 8th, Marti Cochran and Nancy Kadau headed over to Tampa Yacht Club for the annual Gasparilla Interclub race, but unfortunately, the winds were non-existent. On March 3rd, Marti Cochran and Kristina Thyree sailed at Davis Island in Prams with Dee Gill participating in her Sunfish. Marti took 2nd place for the Salties. Our Ideal Sailors are continuing to compete in the Skipper’s Hat Challenge. Due to the weather and the many happenings at the Sailing Center, they still have a few more races to complete. The February meeting of the Amateur Radio Club was held at the Downtown Clubhouse at the request of some of the newer members; as was the March meeting and this month’s meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17th at 5:30 pm. President Jack Satterfield led the meeting. He encouraged members to tune in before the 5:30 net when Trustee Jack Satterfield, Frank Mann, Chris Richard gives out interesting Ierardi, Marge and Chris Lewis, Amateur Radio and some Michael Gulley, Russ Savela and historic information. David Slazas.

Dues were taken and new members Chris Cameron, Michale Gulley, and Rick Brooks were welcomed. Russ assured the group that he would bring champagne when anyone achieved their General. Our two new Technicians, Chris Fraser and Chris Cameron, now have a goal to achieve!

On February 13th, 29 intrepid members of the SPYC Golf Group traveled north of Tampa to play at Heritage Harbor Golf and Country Club. It’s a lovely course with rolling terrain, long wooden bridges through wild areas, and nice open fairways. It was a perfect day weather wise and once again we were treated to lunch and beverages as part of our golf package. First place was soundly secured with 5 under par by Dennis Auger, Ron Hersch, Theresa Matthews, and Ed Wilson. Ed’s eagle was a BIG help! Second place with 3 under par went to Larry Heinkel (the birthday boy!), his son, and Jack Pyel. Third place honors with a par score went to John Arsenault, Gina Pierce, and Tom Pierce. Closest to the pin on the par threes were Bill Casey, Jack Howard, Joe Mansir, and Marty O’Bryan. Gina Pierce won closest to the line with a well-placed, LONG drive. Mark Your Calendars! This month is our member/guest event, scheduled for Thursday, April 12th, and will be at the St Petersburg Country Club. It is a fun event and any guests, whether members or not, are welcome. It will include prizes and a barbecue by the pool where non-golfer can join in. More details to follow. There were plenty of ooh’s and ahh’s at our March program – Brian, owner of Redman Steele Floral Design, left us enthralled with the beautiful and fragrant event. It is safe to say that we all walked away with a renewed enthusiasm for spring and the bounty provided by Mother Nature. Installation and Luncheon: It’s difficult to imagine that the 2017 – 2018 program season is nearing completion. April 9th we will usher in the 2018 – 2019 Ladies Beach Club slate of officers. Speaker for the installation and luncheon will be Lance Peterson from the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum, and will give a slide show presentation on the gulf beaches that is sure to be interesting and informative. The presentation is filled with old photos, stories of growing up here on the beaches and much more. Guests are welcome at a $10.00 fee – come join us for a walk into history! The event starts at 11:00 a.m. Thank you so much to Eva Hefner – longtime member of the LBC with much time served on the board. She was always ready to help out with boundless energy and she will be greatly missed. Hagarty Show & Shine Car Show, Sebring. FL. February 2018

Andy’s Aston Martin gained much interest but did not win any prizes. Some cars had come hundreds of miles just for the show and this was helped by fantastic weather.

Members Andy Evans and Pete Privitera headed to Sebring last month for the Spring Vintage Classic Race Meeting and Hagarty Show and Shine. Competitive racing from period cars ranging from early MG-TD’s to 80’s era muscle cars, with a good showing from Gen 1 Corvettes, contributed to an exciting weekend. The race meeting also featured current Trans Ams which made laps in around 2 minutes…fast by any measure. The highlight? Andy and Pete got out on the track during a lunch break in their car for a tour of this historic circuit and a chance to personally feel the historic dreaded “Sebring Bumps!”

Saltwater Anglers Hit The Gulf For Winter Red Grouper The SPYC Saltwater Angers took advantage of a couple of breaks in the normal windy conditions this time of the year, to run out about 30 miles in the Gulf of Mexico for Red Grouper. Norman Naughton landed a nice fire truck in 110’of water on a live Cigar Minnow. Spring Kingfish are just starting to show up as the waters begin to warm, we had one on a deep diving plug but lost him before reaching the boat. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! The date has been set for our Annual Fishing Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Pass-aGrille Clubhouse on Saturday, October 27th. The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. March was a busy month for our Riders Club. We visited Pancho Villa Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio for some great Mexican food and also traveled to the Bunker Hill Winery in Parish. We revisited a favorite ride to Grange Hall Loop Road in Wimauma. This was such a fantastic scenic ride for us in January we just had to schedule it again. We renewed the ride with some minor route changes but, made the same pit stop at the Hickory Hollow Bar-BQue Restaurant where we enjoyed another wonderful meal. Don’t miss our April 19th ride to Sleepy Hollow Restaurant in Floral City. We’ll follow a nice route with roads that have those twists and turns for our Riders to enjoy. Then we’ll relax at a picnic table under a canopy of oaks and try to decide what to choose from the Sleepy Hollow lunch menu!! Everyone is welcome to join us for a Riders Club meeting, held the third Tuesday of each month at 6:15 pm at the Downtown Club. Our next meeting is April 17th.

There has been some flying activity recently with several club members and friends making the flight down to Key West, both in our own planes and rented aircraft. The preferred aircraft were the trusty Cessna 182’s. The weather was excellent with clear skies and a good tail wind on the return. The purpose was to celebrate Jeff Smith’s bachelor party. Needless to say all planes were at capacity with weight allowance, but I am sure some came back a bit heavier… maybe liquid weight! Any excuse to fly. Of great interest to all pilots, there has much talk over the last year or so concerning the government's plans to privatize Air Traffic Control. This was comprehensively opposed by almost everyone in General and Commercial Aviation, even the military chiming in. The proposed cost savings did not, at any time, outweigh the issues of safety and continued funding particularly for smaller airports. For our part, we have petitioned our Representatives in government and supported the activities of AOPA, and General Aviation interests. The good news is that the government has now backed down and abandoned the idea of privatization of ATC, which has allowed for a better focus on needed improvements. A bit early, but coming later this year, there will once again be a Piston and Props meeting at Sebring. Then featured there will be a fly-in of vintage aircraft, which will come down onto the race track and give everyone a chance to get up close and personal. We would hope to arrange for trips, both by air and land, and have a good turnout from the SPYC Flying Club; we hope to invite the SPYC Car Club to join us as well. Information on upcoming meeting dates for the Flying Club will be announced soon.

Day Trippers Schedule of Events! The Day Trippers, our club’s small boat fleet, had a well-attended and fun planning meeting at PAG in February while enjoying the Bloody Mary buffet! After a delicious meal we got down to planning the next few boat trips. Here are the results of the planning session: April trip: April 14th Destination: Indian Rocks City docks. Lots of restaurants in the area and plenty of docks. I will call ahead to make sure we have dock space and dining reservations at a restaurant we can select by popular vote. Parmesan Cheese Basket Recipe

Servings: Makes 1-1/3 cups

Serving Size: One (1) Bowl

Ingredients: 2 minced garlic cloves 1 teaspoon anchovy paste 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Ingredients: 1 Cup shredded Parmesan cheese (more or less depending on how many baskets you make) 1 drinking glass

Directions: In medium bowl, whisk together garlic, anchovy paste, lemon juice, Dijon mustard & Worcestershire sauce. Add mayonnaise, ParmigianoReggiano, salt, pepper and whisk until well combined. Taste and adjust to your liking. 18

Directions: 1. Heat a 10" skillet over medium-high heat. 2. Sprinkle cheese into a disk shape in pan, using less cheese around the edges (helps produce the lacy look). 3. Allow cheese to get slightly golden underneath, then carefully remove it using a spatula. 4. Quickly drape cheese disk, golden side up, over an upside-down glass and form into a bowl. 5. Allow to cool completely. Repeat to create more baskets. Fill with chopped Romaine Lettuce, Croutons, topped with finely shredded Parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing.
