JOHN BROWN NOVEMBER EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Let’s give a big round of applause to John Brown, our November 2020 Employee of the Month! John has been with the Club since 2008 working in Housekeeping, and has been awarded the Employee of the Month two other times during his career at SPYC. This year has been quite an adventure for us, both inside and outside of the Club, yet this didn’t stop John from performing tasks wherever and whenever he was asked. We are grateful to have him on the Housekeeping team. When you see him around the Club please make sure to congratulate him for all his hard work and dedication. Thank you, John, and keep up the good work!

RIDERS CLUB

Hello SPYC and Riding Club members! My name is Bob Frazee and my wife Juli and I became members of SPYC in November of 2019. We are sailors and currently have a Sabre 426 42 ft. sailboat named JULIANNE. We have owned this boat since 2006 and have sailed throughout the Great Lakes, the U.S. coastal waters from Eastport, ME to Pensacola, the Bahamas, Florida Keys, Cuba, and many ports of call in between. We now keep our boat at our home in the Broadwater Development on the Boca Ciega Bay.
I am also an avid motorcyclist and have enjoyed riding motorcycles since I was a teen; having had numerous motorcycles over the years. Currently I ride a Harley Davidson Fat Boy when in Florida, and a Harley Davidson Tri Glide trike when I am in upstate New York.
Recently, I was elected President of the Riding Club, replacing Bart Franey and Bill Tinsley, who both decided not to continue their membership in SPYC. We currently have several openings in our slate of officers, and I am recruiting SPYC members to help out with filling these vacancies. Specifically, we need a Vice President and a Secretary. Neither position will be very time consuming nor require participation in our weekly rides.
Speaking of our weekly rides, I would love to hear from our current, and prospective members, what they would like to see and do as a member of the “Riders Club”.

Currently we have an incredibly dedicated core group of Riders however, we are always looking for, and welcome, fresh new faces to join in on our weekly rides and monthly meetings. While it is not a requirement to participate in any of our events, I welcome new ideas and suggestions regarding the days we ride, our destination routes, lunch choices, Covid-19 and social distancing concerns, what might help make our events more attractive to you, or anything else which will encourage more participation.
I am looking forward to meeting those of you who I haven’t yet met, and to hearing from all of you regarding what we can do to improve the Riders Club.

On October 28th forty (40) Salty Sisters celebrated Halloween with a safe outdoor party at the Tiki Hut. Since the weather still showed no sign of fall, some tables were also set up inside. A “nicest and cutest” mask contest was judged by the staff and the winners were Helle Getz and
Gail Falkingham.

Captain Els Wiemken and Gail & Helle the “Bingo Babes” presented Carol Hansen with a beautiful card with printed one-liners from all the participants along with a gift card to her favorite restaurant. Salty Sister Bingo has provided a great community during the social distancing these past few months.
The weather cooperated over the next two weeks, despite dispiriting forecasts, for the Jobin, Misfit and Chile Trophy races. It was perfect sailing weather!! Results of the three races:
The Chile Regatta: Carol Hansen took first; Anne O’Dell was second. The Misfit: First place was Vanessa Beckman; second place Angela Treinen, and third place Katie Rodgers.
The Jobin: Carin Korros took first; Suzanne Boohar came in second, and Martha Monfried was third.
Congratulations to ALL of the sailors. Those who helped with Race Committee were: Helen Larsen, Gloria Davis (PRO),
Valerie Massengill, Heather Lalanne, Jennifer Parramore, Lisa Avila, Barbara Mehaffey, Gretchen Tenbrock- Wolfe,
and Jeanette Erb. After the races, lunch was held both in the park across from the Sailing Center and in the Compass Room at the Club.

CRUISING FLEET by Willy Bain, Fleet Captain
October/November was a busy time, with two monthly meetings, the Mini-Commodore’s Cruise, and the Blessing of the Fleet. Had it not been for the assistance of the “Fleet Admiral” Caryn Bain, I’m afraid the Fleet Captain might have been forced by the Fleet to walk the plank! The monthly meetings saw a very good turnout with SPYC guidelines and social distancing a priority.

As the water rat said to the mole, “There is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats....In or out of ‘em, it doesn’t matter.” (Wind in the Willows) The Broad Reachers are avid sailors, but sailing or not, they never miss a chance to just mess around with boats, especially when the time comes to clean up and organize boats for a season of sailing.
On October 31st, Juliette Clark, Carol Hansen, Carin Korros, Gwen Mann, Joanne Simmons, and Angela Treinen gathered at the Club at Pass-a-Grille to inventory and repair sails, clean boats, replace lines, check rudders and dagger boards, and assemble equipment in the Broad Reachers’ storage trailer. The boats had been returned from their summer home at the St.

RVing isn’t just a vacation, it’s also a lifestyle. Steve Lattmann and Larry Cramer usually spend summers at Hearthside Grove, a luxury motorcoach resort in Petoskey Michigan. These types of motorcoach facilities offer firepits, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and bungalows or “casitas” on your own lot—your “wheelestate”. It certainly is a different lifestyle, traveling between your “homes” in your “home”. Like other RVers, Steve and Larry travel around

We’ve assembled two Broad Reacher teams for upcoming interclub events. At the interclub to be hosted by the Dinghy Dames of the Davis Island Yacht Club, the Opti team will be Carin Korros and Joanne Simmons, and Marti Cochran will be competing in Sunfish. For the FWSA Championship Regatta, hosted by the Salty Sisters at the St. Pete Sailing Center November 17th, a team of Gina Bowden-Pierce, Marti Cochran, and Joanne Simmons, are set to represent the Broad Reachers in an Ideal 18.

One advantage of traveling north is seeing the beautiful fall foliage colors. Many people take a trip for “leaf peeping”, or just happen to experience it at their destination. Up in Fall Foliage Michigan, the fall colors are spectacular in late September through mid-late October. Who knew there were so many shades and hues of red, yellow, orange and even purple!
