COMMODORE’S LOG

Happy New Year! I hope you have made resolutions that will be challenging, yet worthwhile. Let’s hope that 2021 is a less interesting year than 2020. May it bring peace, prosperity, good health and favorable winds.

In Florida, this is the beginning of our sailing season. When the rest of the country is chipping ice off their boats and shoveling snow, we have lots of sailboat racing in these short, cool days. Some upcoming regattas being held at SPYC over the next few months include: Snipe Florida State Championship and Multihull Regatta, Disabled Regatta, J-Fest, Winter Foil Regatta, Valentine’s Regatta, Crown Cars Regatta, Habana Regatta, Ted Irwin Memorial Pusser’s Rum Cup, Suncoast Race Week, NOOD Regatta, Regatta Del Sol al Sol, Twilight Sailing, Snipe Masters Worlds, US Match Racing Regatta, and the Lightning and Thistles Midwinter Championships. For a full list of regattas, NOR’s, and online entry, please visit www.spyc.org/regattas.

If you are looking for a good reason to come visit SPYC, here are a few Club hosted events:

• Something for the Kids and their Parents taking place this month - SPYC Kids Video Game Bus Party & Game Show

Night featuring “The Really Wed Game” are both taking place Saturday, January 9th. • Comedy Night with a very funny comedian - Frank Del

Pizzo on Friday, January 22nd (full details to these events are listed in this issue).

For up to date Club events and news, please don’t forget to LIKE the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Facebook or follow us on Instagram. Looking farther ahead, Summer Camp Registration is officially open for members. Camps are available for children ages 5-16. For more details please contact our Sailing Center at 727-8223113 or online: www.sailstpete.org.

I’d like to thank our members for contributing to our annual Employee Holiday Fund, making it a big success! Please continue to support them by using our Club and being generous with those who serve us and make the membership experience enjoyable. Remember that because of Covid, fewer events are being held at the Club, which unfortunately means reduced hours and decreased tips. Please use our clubhouse to the level you feel comfortable and let your servers know you appreciate them, as well as those who work “behind the scenes.”

Finally, I’d like to end this Commodore’s Log by sharing photos from a recent family boating trip. My 2021 resolution is to try to avoid distraction during the important moments of my life and to remember what really matters.

Respectfully,

Commodore David Mendelblatt
