How many of you have noticed the beautiful double helm wheels in the Compass Room while loading up on the buffet or choosing dessert and were curious to know what it represented? The mystery is being revealed. Please read on! * * *

This version of the USS Constitution’s original double helm wheel was conceived, designed and built by a team of SPYC members during the summer of 1998 in the shop of Captain Dave Shreve with the assistance of Fred Corbishley, PC Bruce Watters (donated the brass plaques and plates); and John Hanner (donated the helm wheels). The wheel made its grand entrance August 12, 1998. The double wheel is host to an old ship’s compass [another donation from John Hanner] and two plaques—one explaining the history of the USS Constitution and the other describes the group created around the wheel known as the Wheel Club.

“The Wheel Club was a program established to enable the funding of capital improvement projects through Gifts, Endowments, and Memorials.” The contributions were held in a special account to manage these donations known as the GEM Fund. Membership entry into the Wheel Club was acquired with a $1,000 contribution with each member receiving a special lapel pin and engraved brass plate added to the wheel. Because the program was ongoing, a Red Stone representing a Ruby was attached to the name plates when $2,500 was attained; at the $5,000 or more level, a Stone representing a Diamond was attached. Projects funded by the Wheel Club include the refurbishment of the lovely Quarterdeck Room, replacement chairs for the lounge, and new entrance to the Commodores Room. The founding members of the GEM Fund committee were PC Pat Seidenspinner, Treasurer; John Hanner, Chairman; PC Tom Allison; Ken Cowan; Carole Bardes; Ibbie Jones; Lon Seay; PC Don Krippendorf; Larry Growney and Delton Cunningham. The GEM Wheel is used on many occasions to dress up festivities and allows for great “Kodak Moments!” * * *

MANY THANKS to all SPYC Members who so generously donated to this Fund!

And Special thanks to John & Ginger Hanner for another significant donation to the Club!
