VIP PROPOSER & NEW MEMBER EVENT

P

rivate clubs rely on membership and referrals from their members. WE rely on YOU to recommend your friends, relatives, co-workers – the best of your inner circle – with whom you would like to network, party and share your club experiences. Twice a year we host a New Member Reception for our newest associates to get to know each other. This fall, we combined our New Member Reception with the VIP Proposer Party, which recognizes those existing members who have brought in new colleagues, and rewards them for helping the Club to continue to grow. This year’s event was held on Saturday, October 13th, and was well attended with close to 100 people. We also announced the winners of this year’s 2017-2018 Membership Challenge. Congratulations to Thomas Morlock & Kelley Simpson! As a proposer, Mr. Morlock brought in the highest total of initiation fees and was rewarded with complimentary membership dues for the 20182019 year. As a proposer, Miss Simpson brought in the highest number of members and was rewarded with six months of complimentary membership dues for the 2018-2019 year. Our Member Referral program is an on-going program where food and beverage certificates are given to members who propose new prospects for the Club. Amounts vary depending on the level of the referral, but what a great way to be rewarded for recommending a valuable member to your Club! SPYC JUNIOR

SAILING

ACTIVITIES by Todd Fedyszyn

ue to the red tide along the West Coast of Florida, things have been a little slow going for the SPYC Junior Sailing Team. With 3 of our primary travel events cancelled due to the “bad water”, the team has been practicing hard at home in preparation for some big events later this fall and winter.

D

Our High School program is off to a great start this fall with 35 sailors competing and representing 4 schools. Teams from Osceola HS, Lakewood HS, St Petersburg HS and Shorecrest Prep have competed in the first 2 of 7 South-Points regattas for the current sailing year. Teams will count their best 5 regattas in hopes of qualifying for the district Championship in April of next year.

Over the weekend of November 3-4, SPYC sent 4 sailors to San Diego to take part in the annual San Diego Exchange Program. Rosie Simpson, Sophia Fuller, Taylor Brown, and Alex Imensek represented the Club by sailing Sabot’s in the Mission Bay Yacht Club Junior Commodores Regatta. Sailors are paired up with local San Diego sailing families and will host their San Diego exchange sailor here in St Pete during the Valentine’s Day Regatta in February.

Our Opti RWB racing team will be competing in the USODA Spring Team Qualifier Regatta in New Orleans over the Thanksgiving Break. Nine SPYC Sailors are making the trek in hopes of qualifying to represent the USA next spring in South America and Europe. Additionally, our Laser Sailors have been practicing hard and are looking forward to hosting Florida’s best at the Laser District 13 Championships the first weekend of December here at SPYC.

Congrats to all the skippers and crews in our 2018 Club Championship. An informative program to attend for all mariners is the Marine Spotter Training held December 4th in the Regatta Room 6:30 pm. Weather education is a continuous process. Learn how to interpret current weather conditions and if you choose to be a Marine Spotter you’ll learn how to properly report inclement weather to the National Weather Service as part of the weather spotter program.

GOLF GROUP

e had quite an eventful day at Legacy Golf Club in Lakewood Ranch! It all began with a scheduling glitch by one of their staff members, so we were given tee times instead of our normal shotgun start; but this was sweetened by free breakfast, lunch and beer. In addition, our fearless leaders, Susan and John Arsenault had major car trouble on the exit right before the course. After their distress call, Jack Howard and Ray Pettit raced to rescue Barbara Deininger and Susan, while John waited for the tow truck; another golfer passing by came to their rescue and delivered them to the course. Needless to say, John did not make his tee time but joined in on the 8th hole. It was a beautiful day, a challenging course with ample water and waste bunkers to test our skills. Our outing listed four new golf members, and one of them, Bud Ogle had a HOLE IN ONE on the 3rd hole. It was a stellar ending to another fun day with fellow SPYC Golf Group members.

he Wing Shooters Society enjoys a variety of shotgun sports. Primarily we shoot 100 rounds of sporting clays every Friday. Although we particularly like Sarasota Sporting Clays, we also shoot Fish Hawk in Lithia and Tampa Sporting Clays. We participate in many fund raising charity shoots on the weekends. When cooler weather rolls around in November our thoughts often turn to hunting. Fourteen of us recently returned from the Dorchester Shooting Preserve up in Midway, GA. We now have freezers full of Quail.

Enjoying a steak dinner in the Dorchester dining room.

Night cap at one of the lodges before and during cigars by the fire pit.

Our meetings are the second Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm followed by dinner in our meeting room. If interested, please contact genecollins@gmail.com. Gene is our Grand Pooh Bah and can fill you in. SMOOTH SAILING | DECEMBER 2018

Seeing Florida By Water…

T

he 2018 North American Invitational was a fun multiday event with over 55 volunteers kicking off with a Welcome Party where the visiting yachtsman drew their respective boats from a field of 9 vessels, and ending with an Awards Dinner; with our own Chuck Goes making a very respectable showing on Ken and Corrine St. Jean’s Phantom with his navigation team of Maurice McGough, Sonny Lisowski, and supported by his observer/scrutinizer crew of Nancy Vildibill and Mary McCarthy. The winning boat was Kokomo 2 owned by Pete and Sandy Privitera and skippered by Bob Lindal supported by the observer/scrutinizer team of Selga Sakss and Charl Hadfield. Coming in second place was Tom Collins on Kevin and Debbie Hopper’s Island Hopper with Kevin driving the whole way and supported by the observer/scrutinizer team of Janet Anderson and Tori Kehrer.

Congratulations go to our own Maurice McGough who was elected 2018 Commodore of the North American Cruiser Association. Hope to see him on the water inspiring boaters to get involved in this sport. Thank you to Robert VanLandingham who laid out a course with several points nicknamed “VanLandingham’s Revenge”, he really did lay out a challenging course. Looking forward to more Robert! Finally, thanks go out to Judy McFadden for obtaining a generous, but anonymous sponsor to recognize former predicted loggers at our Club. Great party Judy! We had many people there to be Judy McFadden and the Mike Hennesseys recognized including Mike Hennessey and his wife Cindy, and Jerry Hennessey, sons of P/C Kell Hennessey, the namesake of the “Hennessey Point”, a blind point on the course. Thank you very much to all who participated! For the DayTrippers … don’t forget our December trip to Sea Dogs on Blind Pass ~ Sunday, December 2nd. Plan to meet around 11:30 am to get best dockage and seats. If anyone else would like to join us, please text me at the number below so I can reserve seats and dockage.

RIDERS CLUB

hen great people get together….. you plan great rides! Some rides are “Pop-Ups” with a quick e-mail saying “Let’s ride tomorrow!

Other rides take days of planning with e-mails flying back and forth. In November, that special ride was to be Key West. Our Riders thank Norm Naughton for all of the hard work gathering hotel information for this ride. Riders will take a leisurely trip South stopping at the Miccosukee Resort and Casino in Miami and ending their four day adventure with an overnight stay in Clewiston, before proceeding home to St. Petersburg.

FLYING CLUB

by Andy Evans

T

he Flying Club has been in existence for many years now, but I gently received, from Lora Fulmer, a photo album of those early days. I thought it would be good to look back over the years to when the club began. I am not sure of the exact date, but like minded members decided that their love of flying should be shared within the Club. The founding board was set up with John Colman, Bill and Nancy Shivers, Larry and Joy Wissing, and Gene Wood. Soon the Flying club had its own logo and of course the mandatory polo shirts; there were over 15 active pilots and maybe 40+ members. There were many meetings held both in the Club and out at the hangers on Albert Whitted, including fall parties amongst the aircraft. A big part of the club was “Fly-ins” and the destination list was extensive including Venice, Marathon, Key West, Andros Island Congo Town, Cedar Key, Pensacola, River Ranch and Bimini, just to mention a few. Often

We had a “Pop-Up” ride to Ft. Meade with Norm and Ray who are back in town from summer travels. Everyone can attend our monthly planning meeting held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:15 pm at the Downtown Clubhouse. President- Wayne Bond wbond@dwightdarby.com Vice President- Ray Noyes noyescrew@aol.com Secretary- Douglas Freedle janusfla@tampabay.rr.com

these were attended by a full flight of all active pilots. Another regular and fun event were the Poker Runs, organized the EAA flying FBO to FBO collecting the Founding Officers: John Colman, Bill and Nancy best card hand on the way. Usually Shivers, Larry and Joy Wissing and Gene Wood these covered a local area such as Zephyr Hills, Plant City, Peter O’Night, Tampa Exec and our own home airport…not sure if any club members won, but fun was always guaranteed…and maybe a chance to refuel at a lower rate! Fun has always been a part of the Flying Club, and spreading our fun with the rest of the Club when Santa arrived right at the front door of the Yacht Club in a helicopter - I was never sure how they got permission but maybe Santa sits above the FAA? Our next meeting will be Sunday December 9th, 6:00 pm, Downtown Clubhouse, with cocktails before. Happy Flying!

Full turn out for Sharkey’s Brunch, with John Colman’s helicopter

BROAD REACHERS by Carol Hansen

T

he 47th Annual Commodore Lucas Cup Regatta was held on Friday, October 19th with perfect wind conditions…. for Pass-A-Grille. We were thankful that there were no problems from the recent red tide and saw no dead fish!! Spencer Lucas was on hand to present the trophies to the winners and, as usual, he began by telling one of his famous jokes!! After sailing five races, the winners were: Sarah Richards (Salty Sisters) won 1st place, Robin Babka (Windlasses) took 2nd and Ann Carroll (Bitter Ends) came in 3rd. Sailing for the Broad Reachers were Gail Poffenberger and Katie Rodgers. Our Race Committee: Carol Hansen was PRO with Barbara Arnold, Betty Hurley, Kathy Mansir and new Broad Reachers,

Lucas Cup Sailors Spencer with the trophy winners

Jennifer Parramore & Mary McCarthy. Bitter End, Sylvia Turner, jumped right in as line spotter. Safety Boat was handled by Charl Hadfield and Angela Treinan. Our Boat Handlers were a welcome group of women. Marti Cochran, Kristina Thyrre, Nancy Strite, Teresa Brydon, Donna Papa, and Debbie Walcutt did super job of rigging the boats and getting them stowed away after sailing. The sailors didn’t have to lift a finger!! Finally, Margo Curry from the Windlasses volunteered to be our Protest Judge. This year we had a protest that was heard by Margo and her last minute “volunteers” Janet Walker & Barbara Watson. All was settled, and the trophies were handed out. For more information about the Broad Reachers, contact Carol Hansen at carol@dband1.com.

o-Captain, Kathy Ahern, reported that on Oct. 17th, the Salty Sisters had a terrific day of sailing with seven Ideals and 12 Prams on the water. She thanked all the participants in the Jobin, Misfit, and Chilie races who “obeyed the rules” and were able to complete the five needed races in each series. Winners were: Jobin - Angela Treinan, Misfits – Sarah Richards, and the Chile – Nancy Kadau. This was Nancy’s third time winning this race! Congratulations Angela Treinan - Jobin Winner to all the winners.

Other news: Wednesday, Oct. 10th, Janet Walker and Carole Bardes held a class on Flags and reading the winds using tell-tales. DECEMBER 2018 | SMOOTH SAILING

Sarah Richards & Spencer Lucas

On October 19th, Sarah Richards Nancy Kadau - Chilie Winner and Nancy Kadau sailed in the 47th Annual Commodore Lucas Regatta hosted by the Broad Reachers. Sarah Richards was the winner! Els Weimken, Jennifer Parramore & Dee Gill competed in the SPYC Club Championship on Oct. 20th. Salty Sister Sue Davidson, along with her daughter (J.J.), and Tove Kullman’s son (Marty), also had a team competing and they came in first place. The Salty Sister annual Halloween party was a big hit as usual!! There were witches, goblins, ghouls, and many other “scary” creatures parading around the downtown Clubhouse. They were dressed to impress in their most festive and creative Halloween costumes.

ur October Cruise was to Pasadena Yacht & Country Club for a great weekend, compliments of our Port Directors Kevin & Debbie Hopper. On Friday we dined at the Club, but then Saturday it was One Hot Havana Night! We had special Mojito’s prepared by resident fleet bartender Ed Hanna while enjoying the great music and ambiance of the Hoppers beautiful home and then a Cuban dinner. It doesn’t get better than this! Thanks to all who came Kevin & Debbie Hopper – and especially to the Hoppers for Oct Port Directors such a fabulous time! November 11th, it was my pleasure to coordinate once again this year’s Blessing of the Fleet after the Commodore’s Ball. The new Flag Officers and I blessed over twenty boats….fair winds and following seas for everyone!
