HAPPY NEW YEAR! ~ SPECIAL DOUBLE ISSUE
CHAPTER 3 2
COMMODORE’S LOG H
appy New Year and a warm welcome to our new and reinstated members! It’s that time of year when our mountain members retreat from their summer haunts to our place in the sun, the deep water fish move in closer to shore, and the manatees escape to the tributaries, and power company outflows to stay warm. Though it’s only been a couple of weeks since winter solstice, our boaters are already preparing for their next cruise. There is no better place to be this time of year than right here. After the summer we’ve had, we earned it!
Our Entertainment Committee has some terrific new events planned for the children at SPYC this year, beginning with the Kids’ Video Game Party on January 25th, and a Winter Carnival
This month, SPYC is proud to host the FCYC Weekend, January 11th-13th. The Club will be kicking off the weekend with a Comedy Hypnosis Show & Dinner featuring hypnotist, Erick Känd on Friday, January 11th. Saturday, the 12th, will be a busy day with the FCYC General Meeting, Guest/Spouse Excursion to The James Museum & vomFASS Tasting in Downtown, Directors Luncheon, and capping off the day with the Ocean Paradise Dinner & Dance in the evening.
And speaking of manatees, one fine fall afternoon we were anchored up behind Tierra Verde when Commodog Sophie decided to initiate a little inter species communication, at which we witnessed our first and probably only dog-manatee kiss. I leave you with the photographic evidence for your perusal.
I am pleased to announce a new date for the Vintage Motor Classic, also on the FCYC weekend, Sunday, January 13th. But wait, there’s more! On that same weekend we have the Master Driver Team Racing Championship, January 12th-13th. Other upcoming regattas include: Valentine’s Day Regatta ~ February 9-10, St. Petersburg NOOD 2019 ~ February 15-17, Thistles Midwinter East Championship ~ February 25-March 1, and the St. Petersburg - Habana Race starting on March 18th.
scheduled on February 24th. I also want to give a shout out to SPYC members Jopie Helsen & Heidi Trilsch, who are poised to begin their around the world sailing campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In case you missed their Bon Voyage Reception last month, check out their website, https://www.svsky57.com/, for more information.
Have a great month!
Jim Byrne, Commodore

t Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host this 22nd annual Regatta with sailors from Canada, Ireland, and the USA. Seven Sonars and eleven 2.4mR boats enjoyed three days of Florida weather, with winds from 1- 20 knots. Again, this year, we were pleased to have 3 teams from the Judd Goldman Foundation in Chicago, and our favorite Irish Team with skipper John Twomey. Several Canadian teams added to the competition. All results are on www.spyc.org with a link to yachtscoring.com. The Grunson Milam Trophy, donated by Linda Merkle many years ago, was presented to Diane Fowler and Deborah Smith

SAILING
ACTIVITIES by Todd Fedyszyn
O
ver the Thanksgiving Holiday the SPYC Opti RWB Race Team travelled to New Orleans to compete in the 2018 USODA Opti Midwinter Championship and Spring Team Qualifier. 234 competitors from all corners of the USA made the trek to the Southern Yacht Club looking to qualify to represent Team USA overseas over Easter next April. Our top performer was Bella Shakespeare finishing in 18th overall and 4th female. Bella was followed by Dorothy Mendelblatt in 69th place and Kate Danielson in 94th place. Also competing for SPYC were Sidney Moyer, Peyton Weaver, Jack Carter, Rosie Simpson, Ava Shakespeare and Callen Burnett. With her 18th overall finish, Bella Shakespeare qualified to represent the USA at the 2019 Opti South American Championship in Chile. Dorothy Mendelblatt qualified to represent the USA at the Palamos Opti Regatta in Spain and Kate Danielson qualified to represent the USA at the International Opti Meeting in Lake Garda Italy.
SPYC also hosted the Laser District 13 Championship over the weekend of December 8-9. 104 of the top laser sailors from around the district and country all came to Tampa bay looking to tune their skills prior to the National Championship in Fort Lauderdale in January. Guthrie Braun was our top performer in 12th place overall in the 74 boat Radial Fleet and Emma Shakespeare finished 2nd overall in the Laser 4.7. Also competing for SPYC were Emily Allen, Heidi Hicks, Heather Kerns. Aspen Slavic, Axsel Heikenen, Cameron Delgado, Logan Rimel, Ethan Danielson, Colin Lawther and Preston Weaver. The SPYC Junior Race Team is hosting two major events in the New Year. Over the MLK weekend we are hosting the USODA Team Race Midwinter Championship and February 9-10 we are hosting the annual Valentines Day Regatta. If you would like to volunteer to help out with either or both events please reach out to SPYC Race Director Todd Fedyszyn at todd@spyc.org.
SPYC has also been busy hosting regattas with two National Championships held in the Clubs fleet of J70’s. The weekend prior to Thanksgiving the Club hosted the J70 Youth National Championship. Competitors had to qualify to compete by being the top youth J70 team at a number of events around the country. SPYC was represented by the team of Heather Kerns, Emma Shakespeare, Emily Allen, Heidi Hicks and Cameron Delgado.

Happy New Year 2019!
f you’ve missed sending in your nominations for the Yachting Recognition Awards because of the holidays, we understand. Reach out to Trisha Birkenstock, as the committee has a little more time for nominations. If you attended the lighted Christmas Boat Parade last month at the SPYC Beach Club in Pas-a-Grille, you may have seen some construction. The house to the North of the Club is gone. Working closely with the city, our Club leadership and management is making strides to have the pool ready by spring.

ovember and December proved to be the busiest season for our Golf Group. Our November monthly outing took us to Bardmoor Golf Club. It was a competitive day as three teams came in at +2 requiring a match of cards. The winners were John Rogers, Ed Wilson, Jack Pyhel, and Dick Vazzano. Winners for the closest to the pin were Karen Lieberman, Mike McDonough, Tom Ritschel, and guest Edward Morris. Straightest drive was had by Mike McDonough. We celebrated our fun day and welcomed back many of our seasonal members with a pizza party in the Clubhouse. We traveled to Innisbrook for our December tournament. This venue always is a welcome treat and we played the North Course (Little Copperhead) with a total of 29 golfers. The fairways were pristine and the greens were well manicured. Afterwards, we gathered in the Sandpiper Clubhouse restaurant to share our stories and award our winning teams. The week continued with our annual Holiday Party at the Yacht Club. Santa Claus made his traditional visit and partygoers sang our favorite song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” as each table took turns displaying their props as their “day” was chanted. The dinner buffet, many libations, and a lively band made for a wonderful celebration of the season. In addition to challenging golf scrambles each month, the Golf Group has had a socially great time. Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 8th at 6:00 pm; we typically gather for happy hour at the Club. A Golf Rules of the Month proves to invoke lively discussion. Martin Morris and Jack Howard have coordinated a monthly video presentation of golf instruction for our enjoyment. We even have a 50/50 drawing for a lucky winner. We invite all SPYC golfers to join us in 2019!

ctober 27, 2018 ~ Participants in the 2018 Saltwater Anglers Annual Fishing Tournament had a great time, despite red tide and high winds, as a fair number of boats braved the difficult conditions. The broad range of eligible species and wide extent of red tide required unique strategies. Anglers worked their niches and turned in a diverse catch. We had great sponsors including St. Pete Distillers, sponsoring the captains meeting, and Flying Boat Brewery sponsored the scoring/weigh-in. Third place boat, captained by Stephan Grossnickle, turned in an impressive three 1st place species: Seatrout, Spanish Mackerel, and a Pompano - total of nine points. Coming in

elcome to our newest member, Megan Desrosiers, pilot in training, who is beginning an intensive course aiming to fly four times a week. We look forward to seeing her progress, and I must say it’s good to see a younger future pilot joining the ranks of us old fogies. Hopefully we will see a few more young guns onboard soon. Several of us attended the EAA Fly-in at Manatee Airport in Palmetto, a wonderful basic grass strip that for some reason scares away pilots who Still flying and roaring. Donna Bauer seems pleased like to land on the hard stuff. We enjoyed the company along with good burgers and dogs, cooked up by our member Ron Bernot, with help from the EAA
The crew, amazed or surprised and Young Eagles Volunteers. at experimental take-offs Guilty parties included Ron & Rita Bernot, Tracy & Eunice Livingston, Karen & Alan Walter, including Donna and - whom all arrived by four-wheel land planes! Spectators were able to get up close and personal with planes and pilots, and amazed at how far LSA and experimentals have come. There was an excellent group of Van’s RV9’s and 12’s who took off in formation with a great low fly pass. There were also serval older military aircraft; their long run along the grass strip gave us a real taste of big radial engines.
Hopefully the New Year will bring the pilots out to arrange some good meetings and events. Remember, you don’t need to be a pilot or have a plane. If you are interested in aviation and flying come along, or call me, Andy Evans at 727-310-5981. Next meeting will be on Sunday, January 13th – 6:00 pm downtown Club. Watch your e-mails for updates.

thanked her Committee; Joanne Janet Walker Simmons, Joy Rudnicki, and Angela Kowalik for a job well done. She also thanked all the volunteers and sponsors for their help and support. This year’s Boutique was quite successful. This past summer we were able to sponsor 75 children from the YMCA, so it looks as though we will be able to do the same thing next year. During November the weather was uncooperative, so CoCaptain Kathy Ahern organized several education sessions, including the use of radios, race scoring, understanding flags, and rigging 420’s. This month we look forward to the Annual Skipper’s Hat Challenge in Ideals, Mother Ducky races in Prams, and training in Sonars.

he Broad Reachers love to have different types of sailing activities. Last month, we decided to sail to Hotel Zamora for lunch. Our nine sailors, along with our Safety boat, headed north up the channel, under the bridge and over to the hotel. After rafting up, and crawling from boat to boat, we enjoyed a nice lunch before heading back to the Club. Finally, moving day was upon us!! With the Paige House coming down, the Broad Reachers moved everything into our new home….a trailer. As with all moves, we were able to throw out a lot of junk. Thanks to all the volunteers and SPYC staff to help us make the move go smoothly.
