ON THE WATER

There is a lovely expressionist print of a racing yacht in the downstairs hallway near the stairs and opposite the Salty Sister niche which many of you have passed hundreds of times. What exactly is it ? The mystery has been revealed. Please read on!

July 24-26, 1998, John & Ginger Hanner were part of a SPYC contingency headed to Newport, Rhode Island, to participate in one of the fundraising campaigns for Skipper Ed Baird and his Team Young America** training there during the summer for the 2000 America’s Cup Campaign. The team’s sponsor was the New York Y.C. , but SPYC had a significant contributing interest as well. Sponsors such as PC Bill & Hazel Hough, PC Bill & Marian Ballard, PC Skipp & Joyce Fraser, PC Don & Ginny Bogue, John & Ginger Hanner in Newport. Jim & Linda Castle, Carl & Kathi Hall, PC Rich & Char-Nel Doyle, Ken & Barbara Cowan, Richard & Julie Priestley, Steve & Debbie Lang, Neiman Print Gloria Lewallen, Nancy Vildibill, PC Bill & Sherry Welch, Ardith Rutland, 1964 America’s Cup ChallengeLon & Jill Compton, Joe & Aila McEwen… to name a few. That Summer weekend, the Hanners recall being shuttled out to Block Island Sound on 41 ft. R.I.B. inflatables to watch the racing and have the opportunity to hitch a ride on one of the Cup Class boats – Young America USA36 and Spirit of Rhode Island USA39. Ed Baird: “We had several yacht clubs, from around the US, who were involved and each had multiple donors who came to sail with us in Newport. With two boats, we often spilt guests between the teams for the day, and some days shuttled guests on and off the boats to allow for more people to enjoy the experience. I always tried to give them some time on the helm (John was one of those people), which helped them understand the loads on the boat and how sensitive they were to helm and sail adjustments. Any sailor was decidedly impressed. In fact, even the leader of the Blue Angels thanked us by saying it was the coolest day of his life!”

It was during one of the many Newport fund-raising events, that John & Ginger Hanner purchased the Leroy Neiman* print of the 1964 America’s Cup you now see hanging in the main hall to the North side of the stairs. We whole heartedly thank the Hanners for their generous donation to the Club!

INFORMATION COMMITTEE

Youngest Race Committee Volunteer! Meet Ronan, son of SPYC members Aaron & Vanessa McClearnon offering his volunteer services at the Winter Foil Racing Regatta! (Very adorable!!)

SPYC hosted a Winter Foil Racing Regatta on January 30th & 31st this year. This came on the heels of our Fall Foil Racing Regatta held in November. Why another one so quickly? Tampa Bay is a location for the US Sailing’s Olympic Development Program leading up to the 2024 Paris and 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. US Sailing has launched a new racing and training series of Olympic class regattas to be held annually in Florida and California.

SPYC seized the opportunity to create a regatta for the Foiling Formula Kites the weekend before they were to compete in Clearwater at the West Marine US Open Sailing Series on February 4th - 7th. Most competitors were in town and it gave our regional competitors an opportunity to sail against World Champions and future Olympians. We had 19 Foiling Kite competitors. Depending on the breeze direction our versatile venue allows sailing in both the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. On Saturday, the racers saw ESE 6-8 knot breezes kiting off the Skyway and got three races in before the breeze faded. A Southern Sideshore 12-14 knots breeze greeted the racers on Sunday, we completed five competitive races in the Gulf of Mexico off Pass a Grille Beach. Markus Edegran and Evan Heffernan were board to board for first and second place in each race. Edegran took home 1st Place while Heffernan was 2 pts behind in 2nd Place and Daniela Moroz ,our Top Female and 4x IKA Formula Kite Class World Champion and 2x Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, was 3rd. SPYC Member Kevin Reali was 7th. Our kiters hailed from Florida, California, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Turkey, Greece, Texas, and New York.

The event was staged at our Beach Club in Pass-a-Grille. Thank you to our PAG staff, Elite Watersports Sponsor and the Race Committee volunteers. The volunteers proved again that they have what it takes to offer high performance race management
