6 Junior Sailing Update
by Todd Fedyszyn, Youth Sailing Director
Over the weekend of April 2nd-3rd our SPYC High School sailors competed in the SAISA District Fleet Racing Championship hosted by Eckerd College. SPYC was the only Yacht Club with two schools represented in the 15-boat fleet. Teams qualified based on their overall standing in the SAISA South Points Series for the 2021-2022 school year. Shorecrest finished in 4th place overall with Guthrie Braun and Rosie Simpson taking the overall win in the “A Division”. Sidney Moyer and Dorothy Mendelblatt sailed a strong regatta finishing as the top all female team in the A Division as well. The teams of Bella Shakespeare, Zack O’Connor, and Ethan Danielson with Kate Danielson and Ainsley Braun sailed in the B division.
Over the weekend of April 9th-10th, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team made the trip to Sarasota to compete in the annual Sailfest Regatta. SPYC was well represented with 40 sailors competing in the Laser, Opti RWB, and Opti Green Fleets. In the 81 boat Opti RWB fleet John Hartney was our top performer in 2nd place overall followed by Blake Vincent in 3rd and Chris Shaffer in 6th. SPYC’s Thomas Weidner also took home 1st overall in the Opti White Fleet. In the 23 boat Laser Radial Fleet, SPYC’s Callen Burnett finished in 4th overall followed by Preston Weaver in 5th and Anthony Smart in 6th. Sophia Fuller was our top finished in the 25 boat Laser 4.7 Fleet in 8th overall. Our SPYC Green Fleet showed that hard work is paying off with all sailors posting improved scores throughout the weekend. Our top performer was Tucker Gowens in 16th overall.
SPYC was well represented at the USODA Team Race Midwinters hosted by the Sarasota Yacht Club. Opti Team Racing is exciting as Yacht Clubs compete against one another in a 4v4 format with the team scoring the lowest points at the finish of a quick and intense 6-minute race. SPYC was represented by Chris Shaffer, Ryder Ellis, Gloria Privis, Dominic Seabold, and Blake Vincent on Team 1 and Adam and Reid Mendelblatt, Bennett Lamb, Talon Schenk, and Jad Aberdrabbo on Team 2.

C SPYC's Annual Yachting Recognition by Donna Sue Marks Yachting Information Chair Awards Ceremony
The Yachting
Recognition
Awards were held on March 29th in the Ballroom of the Downtown Clubhouse.
The social hour included cocktails, appetizers, numerous photo boards along the north wall showcasing 70 years of Salty Sister’s activities, and a slide show of Race Committee photos on the west wall. A little over 200 members and guests were in attendance.
Close to 80 recipients were recognized from our Junior Sailors, High School, Collegiate, Professional, One-Design, and Offshore Sailors. The volunteers of the Race Committee, especially Twilight Race Officer Gloria Davis, received lots of applause, and our Cruising Fleet showcased a member making a 4,500 NM journey. Congratulations to all the recipients for your ambassadorship of SPYC around the world! A big thanks to the Yachting Recognition Committee chaired by Trisha Birkenstock. We also celebrated the lifetime contributions of Dick Funsch and Gene Hinkel with the Commodore’s Award, including short videos and presentations. We applauded Ed Baird’s 2021 induction into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The America’s Cup Hall of Fame turns "30" this year and a dinner on April 28th at the New York Yacht Club took place, where Ed Baird was formally recognized. (Due to Covid restrictions last year Ed was unable to attend the induction in Auckland.)
