Final assembly – Summer 2021

MUSIC CABARET 1) Report on Duke Ellington Eucharist: Our School Choir had an exceptional opportunity to work with the Clark Tracey Orchestra in York Minster on St Peter’s Day. The Jazz Eucharist featured music from the Sacred Concerts by Duke Ellington and was an extraordinary service, with over 1000 in the congregation. Our choir sang beautifully, supported by some of the best jazz musicians in the country, excellent soloists and an outstanding dancer. It was also good to work in partnership with the clergy and choir of York Minster and we were fortunate to have the Archbishop of York preaching. This service will live long in the memory and has been warmly received by all who attended. 2) Report on Cabaret: Our Upper Sixth were on very fine form with their solos for Cabaret this year, with a wide range of pop and jazz songs. The Swing Band acted as the foundation for many of the numbers and they have developed so well this year. The concerts also featured a number of small ensembles, including the Clarinet Choir, the Chamber Choir, the Little Big Band and both Girls’ and Boys’ Barbershops, as well as our School Choir. Well done to everyone who took part.

3) Ian Hunter Award: The Ian Hunter Award for most improved musician and is awarded each year to a student in the L6th. This year it goes to Beth Eaton, who has shown outstanding leadership in our string ensembles and choirs. 4) Grant Cup: The Grant Cup, named after Mr Matthew Grant, is awarded for the first time this year for contribution to Music. The cup is awarded in recognition of a pupil’s contribution to our ensembles throughout their time at St Peter’s. This may not be as a soloist who has stood in the spotlight but as a loyal and committed ensemble player or singer who has developed their skills over their time with us and who has been a major part of our Music programme. This year the award goes to Ben Finch, who has sung in the School and Chapel Choirs and our Boys’ Barbershop. Ben has also been developing his piano playing over the past five years and recently achieved Grade 8 with distinction. 5) Commemoration rehearsal: We look forward to Commemoration tomorrow. Please can the School Choir and Brass Ensemble arrive at the West End of the Minster for 0835, so we can be in position for rehearsal at 0845. Smart school uniform please, 5th form may wear their 6th form suits if they want to.

Creative Writing Congratulations go to Eliyah Ali, Serene Kong and Islay CunliffeLister who have all won a prize for their incredible, imaginative entries into the International Booker Creative competition which ran earlier this term. And to Ellie Paul, Alice Braim and Amelie Wright who gave the winning speeches at the Carnegie Shadowing Event last week. It's wonderful to see such passion and creativity among students in form four. And in third form, we were so impressed with all the entries into Mrs Todd's 'Shakespeare in Reels' competition. Special mentions for editing go to Ben MacNeill and Alexa Glyn- Mills, and the overall winners were Nadia Olijar, Eve Batty and Danny Middleton for their inventive depiction of Henry V.

Maths In the spring term, our strongest middle school pupils attempted the annual UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Those pupils achieving particularly high results are invited to partake in follow on rounds. This accounts for roughly the highest 8% of all scores achieved by participants, and this year we had 17 of our pupils achieve this incredible level and were able to complete the Kangaroo competition, with a particular mention to Chihiro Iizuka and Gabriel Dainty for obtaining a merit result. Further to this, the best 1500 pupils nationally get invited to an even more prestigious round, the Mathematical Olympiad. Amber Yang was the only pupil to qualify for the Olympiad this year, completing a gruelling 2 hour long paper with six challenging maths questions. Amber did fantastically well and was able to attain a distinction certificate for her efforts. COME UP TO COLLECT

Rowing It has been a great year for the Boat Club. From having to cancel racing due to not enough water in the river at Peterborough, race abandonment at Newark due to horrendous conditions through to the extra ordinary success at Bradford Regatta. It has been a privilege to have helped all the rowers overcome the adversities and celebrate their triumphs. Tennis Boys 1st Team A superb season for the 1st team who won all but one of their regular season fixtures. Congratulations to Max Marshall, Robert Coggrave, Toby Baker, Angus Robinson, and Freddie Tomlinson who have reached the National Finals in the LTA Schools National Cup which means that St Peter’s are one of the top 16 teams in the country. 2nd Team An excellent group of players demonstrated our strength on the senior boy's tennis and the team won all six of their fixtures this summer. U15 The U15 team have had many fixtures this season and with a small pool of players to choose from the boys have shown fantastic commitment to play so much tennis week on week. They have had great success winning 6 of their 9 fixtures. U14 There have been an enthusiastic and large group of dedicated tennis players in the 3rd form and the season has been a great success. Winning 6 out of their 8 regular school fixtures.

Girls Tennis 1st &2nd V1 Our Senior 1st team have enjoyed an outstanding season. At the Independent Schools National Championships at Eton this week, Anna Coggrave and Izzie White reached the quarter finals of the main draw event, in a brilliant run. Captain Flora Watson, partnering alongside Dasha Kuzmina and 2nd pair, Izzy White & Anna Coggrave, qualified and won the Senior Students North Finals - which represented the completion of the tournament, playing both singles and doubles. In all, the team won all but one of the regular school fixtures and lost an extremely close match in the National Cup to a Wakefield Grammar team, containing a national age group champion. The 1s also claimed 1st place in the St Peter’s Senior Tennis Festival, beating a host of visiting teams from all over the county. The 2nd team also played consistent, competitive tennis, reflecting our strength in depth across the tennis programme, with equal commitment. We would like to thank all outgoing U6 players for their contribution throughout their time at St Peter’s. Junior Girls Tennis The junior teams continue to make impressive progress also. With improving consistency, control and concentration. The U14’s won the St Peter’s Junior Tennis Festival for their age group and the U15’s finished runners up in theirs. Congratulations to U14 Millie Batterton, who has featured in the 1st team and played up in the U15s at Eton, alongside Ailsa Robinson, where they reached the semi-finals of the plate. Once again thank you to all players who have represented the team so well.

CRICKET Boys Cricket The U14s have had an excellent season playing 8 winning 6 and losing 2, they have been consistent and always given their best. The U15s have had an outstanding season and were unbeaten in normal fixtures. At the Trent festival they achieved two wins with their only loss against Durham in the last over. The 2nd XI have had a busy season, playing 6 and winning 4, the most notable achievement was their involvement in the Durham Festival where they reached the final to beat Barnard castle and win the title. The 1st XI During the season they have played some outstanding cricket, with many highlights and moments to be proud of. The win against Worksop on the last ball of the game, to go through to the National T20 North final is a moment that will be remembered for a long time. They have shown great determination with many younger cricketers coming through to represent the 1st XI. Girls Cricket 1st X1 There has been an excited buzz within the cricket programme, which has firmly established itself this term. Over 15 girls have played with the first XI throughout the season, all playing with determination, intent and passion. Matches were both won and lost with knowledge acquired on every occasion. The team has thrived on competition, with individuals standing up and delivering when it really mattered. A side bolstered by Jess England, Anna Fairclough , Molly Ake and Lauren Wood, all bringing experience from both county and club, saw convincing 50 run wins over Hill House and Ampleforth College, punctuated by thrilling final over defeats, against Sedbergh & Giggleswick which could have easily gone our way.

It is a very exciting time for girl’s cricket at St Peters School, with the recent introduction of a girl’s program already bearing fruit. When selected to play for the boys third XI on occasions, individuals grasped the opportunity with both hands, accepting the challenge and making significant contributions. Junior Cricket The U14 & U15 girls have also had a packed season - within their age groups and some combined U15s/U14s fixtures – totalling around 15 in all. So much progress has been achieved across the board, with a small number of girls from the U14/15 teams getting the valuable opportunity to experience occasional 1st X1 games whilst senior students were unavailable during exams. All players, whether senior or junior have helped to push and drive the standards and performances forward for themselves and their peers, impacting so positively across the games programme. Hosting the junior cricket festival was again a highlight and in the forthcoming seasons we look forward to broadening this through to the seniors.

Congratulations we wish them all successful seasons.

Debating Thursday lunchtimes then became society events and were quite often rather riotous affairs, trying out Just a Minute, more varied motions such as about the value of pigeons and trying out the popular panel show 'The Unbelievable Truth'. We ran two internal competitions No Notes and BP comp. We have been a very busy co-curric department, with a lot of wonderful team building opportunities and developing communication skills, including the power of persuasion!

Some key moments have been: The Public Speaking team made to the Regional finals and were runners up in this competition. The Mace team won their Regional Final, progressing through to the Grand Final at ESU HQ, Dartmouth House in London. It was a fantastic day with challenging motions and an amazing variety of debating styles and oracy. The BP teams competed in several competitions too, gaining lots of valuable experience, against teams who were, in some cases, 4 school years above some of our students.

PRIZES Back in the Christmas term, the interhouse competitions saw a lovely melange of students represent their houses, some debating for the first time! The winners were Juniors: School House (Lottie Brown collecting) & Seniors: Dronfield Isabel Zheng collecting (also gets a prize later) I would personally like to thank Mrs Bennett and Miss Jones for their excellent support and to Justin Kong and, to Isabel Zheng, our fantastic Captain of Debating. [Hand out gift each]

The Merit Cup Keenly contested despite the differing circumstances. Total merits are divided by the population of each House to yield and average of the merits per person.

St Peter’s Award Since joining J4, this young musician has consistently shown a natural ability in and an affinity for performance. As a saxophone and clarinet specialist, she has been at the heart of a wide range of ensembles throughout her time at St Peter’s, including leading our Swing Band and Clarinet Choir. As a soloist, she has shone in a number of school performances and she has also been a regular performer in festivals across the North, winning the overall title of the Harrogate International Festival, The East CoastFestival and becoming the Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire overall winner. She recently achieved an ARSM diploma in clarinet with distinction and also holds Grade 8 saxophone with distinction. In her auditions for four major conservatoires at the end of last year, she was offered a place in every case and will be continuing her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in September. She recently competed in the woodwind round of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and progressed through to the final 25 players in her category for U18 musicians across the country. A musician who is as at home playing Mozart on the clarinet as she is improvising her way freely through a Sonny Rollins chart on the tenor saxophone, the St Peter’s Award goes to Rachael Green.
