It has been another exciting week at St Peter’s 2-8 with a tremendous amount going on in school. On Tuesday the Reception children performed their Christmas ‘Ho, Ho, Ho, what a show!’ and it certainly was a magical show! It was delightful listening to what the children have been learning in music this half term with Mrs Hayden and seeing the confidence and excitement the children had in performing to their virtual audience from around the world. The children recited poems, played chime bars and sang Christmas songs whilst wearing very festive Christmas jumpers. On Thursday morning it was Nursery’s turn to perform and they were amazing, singing many Christmas songs, playing sleigh bells to accompany the singing and dancing to their Christmas tunes. It was lovely to watch the children perform so confidently on stage thoroughly enjoying performing to their virtual audience. Well done to all of the children in Nursery and Reception. My thanks to all of the staff in Nursery and Reception who have worked tirelessly to support the children preparing to entertain us all. Huge thanks to Mrs Hayden our musical maestro who has taught the children all of the songs and sprinkled her musical festive fairy dust over proceedings. Thanks also to Barry Nacey for all his help and IT support setting up the virtual livestreaming of these events, our first at St Peter’s. My final thanks to the parents and grandparents who joined via Zoom as well as Planet eStream to be part of the virtual audience.

the performances. I can’t wait to watch these performances and I am sure you can’t either! On Thursday we have a Christmas activity day There will be Christmas crafts to make, Cookies to ice and games to play. Children can wear their festive Christmas jumpers on this day. Our chef Stuart Norwood with his team will be preparing a Christmas lunch on Thursday which will be delicious. Stuart has asked us to send you the most recent menus for you to see and Craig Robinson our catering manager has included a brownie recipe for you all to try at home. More details further in the newsletter. Paul Miles-Kingston, the Director of Music at St. Peter’s 2-18, and all of the music staff at St Peter’s 218 are preparing a St Peter’s 2-18 Christmas Service which has been recorded over the past few weeks. The Year 2 and Year 3 children were filmed this week singing three carols in the Chapel. One of our Governors, The Dean of York, Rev Dr Jonathan Frost, came into the Chapel this week to record a piece and the Headmaster, Jeremy Walker has recorded a reading. There will be a link on Friday to enable you to watch this recording at home. Thank you to everyone including Mrs Hayden for all their hard work to create what will be a brilliant service.

there are no school rules at St Peter’s 2-8 as we want our pupils to learn about and develop the school values within themselves, rather than impose a list of rules upon them. Instead, we teach pupils about and live by our seven school values. These values enable our pupils to make choices and consider how to act engendering tolerance, respect and celebrating difference and diversity within our school community and beyond. The values are displayed around school and each half term we focus on a value in assemblies and in PSHE. This half term our focus is on the school value of ‘Hope – We prepare for the future. We relish every opportunity that comes our way and we take time to reflect, dream and aspire’. Our celebration on a Friday allows the teachers to talk about a child or children in their class who have demonstrated the school values throughout the week and award a Value Champion Award to positively reinforce the importance of these values. When the children start at St Peter’s 2-8 they are introduced to the Learning Superheroes with their Learning Superpowers. The aim is to teach the children about the process of learning to encourage them to take ownership for their learning and to be engaged, motivated and confident learners. We believe that it is important that our children understand how to learn effectively and that they can talk about their learning and develop a ‘toolkit’ of specific strategies that support effective learning. We selected the superheroes as characters that the children could identify with to provide a visual reminder. We are now able to listen to children describing which learning super powers they will need and beginning to develop an understanding of how they can learn. Our children know that they can call on their learning superpowers and all be learning superheroes! All of the children at St Peter’s 2-8 use their ‘learning superpowers’ throughout the curriculum. We encourage the children to discuss and evaluate how they have approached a task. The children become unafraid of getting stuck, but rather begin to embrace a level of difficulty. They show imagination and creativity in their thought and are able to recognise and celebrate themselves and others as learners. To this end in our celebration assembly each class celebrates a learning superhero, a child or children who demonstrate the superpowers of one or more of our learning superheroes.

One of the highlights of the week in the Celebration assembly on a Friday. The House Point trophy is I have also loved the Reception Advent calendar each awarded and music and Physical Education Awards are awarded to children by Miss Flockhart and Mrs day on our school Facebook account. MUSICAL NOTES Musical notes – Wow, we’ve had another music packed week at 2-8! I couldn’t be prouder of our Year 2 and 3 Bubble choirs this week. They recorded our items for the Whole School Carol Service on Monday in the Chapel and sounded amazing. All their hard work most definitely paid off and I’m sure they will all look forward to watching the service with their family and friends when it is broadcast next Friday. Reception and Nursery were are first two year groups to perform their Christmas songs to their parents via Zoom this week, they were all fantastic! We would have really loved to have been able to invite our audiences into school properly but that obviously was not possible this year. The children loved spotting their parents on our big screen and it really felt like you were all in the room with us! I’m really looking forward to next week when it will be the turn of Year 1, 2 and 3. They have been rehearsing hard this week and the children are excited to share their plays with you next week! PE

Year 3 have worked very well in PE this week. In their Core PE lessons this half term, the children have been doing Gymnastics, with particular emphasis on the themes of balance and flight. It has been very impressive to watch the children use all the balance and flight skills they have acquired and developed over their previous gymnastics lessons and apply them to the apparatus used. Over the past three lessons, the children have worked in a carousel, spending the lesson either working on the beam, the ropes or the tables. When working on the beam, the children showed great focus and control to travel across it, using their arms to help them balance. The children also showed excellent creativity to think of a unique way they could travel across the beam. When working on the tables, the children were able to demonstrate various jumps learned in previous lessons e.g. tuck, pike and straddle at differing heights. Finally, when working on the ropes, the children

demonstrated excellent upper body strength and coordination when climbing the rope. All the children were also able to balance on the rope first by removing an arm from the rope and later challenging themselves to remove a leg. Excellent work! In their Games lessons, Year 3 have been playing Tag Rugby, a sport which many of the children have not experienced previously. They have been working primarily on their attacking and defensive skills through tag games as well as developing their ball handling and learning how to pass a rugby ball using the correct technique. All the children have shown an excellent understanding of the roles of attack and defence and have made huge improvement in their ball skills. This week, they have applied the teachings of their previous lessons into gameplay, through 4v4 mini matches. The children worked collaboratively with their teammates, resulting in some very close and exciting games, which was very pleasing to see. Well done Year 3!

Both of our little elves have delivered Christmas to the Acorns and Conkers this week! We have been so busy getting into the festive spirit!

these can all be seen on Evidence Me and School social media platforms. Day one started with a very funny joke performed by two very cheeky snowmen!

RECEPTION

Christmas has officially begun in Reception! On Monday morning, the children were amazed to find an upside down Christmas tree in RA! Full of awe and a lot of questions, the children decided that some Christmas fairies have been rather mischievous with the decorations! The children began to think of possible solutions for how to fix the Christmas tree and were left wondering what else these fairies might get up to!

YEAR 1

Christmas has arrived in Year 1 and we have had a wonderful week! We have been busy little elves in provision. We have been 'elfing' ourselves, drawing 'elf' portraits, building snowflakes in construction, writing letters to Father Christmas, following step-by-step instructions to draw different Christmas scenes, building Christmas patterns and of course lots of Christmas

maths challenges! We had the best time in forest schools on Tuesday afternoon, toasting marshmallows and squishing them between chocolate biscuits! We learnt about fire safety, kneeling safely by the fire and using protective gloves. We have even had some little visitors to Year 1- watch out for those cheeky elves. I wonder what they will do next? Have a super weekend everyone!

2H It’s finally December! In 2H that only means one thing… SPROUTS! As anyone who has been in 2H will tell you ‘Nobody likes a well done sprout, but everyone LOVES a Well Done Sprout!’ We have started earning these tasty treats straightaway and we all agree that they are yummy… We have got the fire lit (on the smartboard), the Christmas lights and tree and we are certainly in a festive mood. Our sewing Christmas decoration project is well under way and we have even squeezed in time to make Christingles. At the end of last week we finished recording our 2H version of The Nutcracker story, which we acted out in groups, using our own puppets on Puppet Pals. Using the app has helped us with our dramatic skills but also taught us a lot about collaborative learning. Watch our finished project by scanning the QR code below- we think that you can tell how well we know this lovely story now. We have almost finished writing and illustrating our own versions of the story, which we will bring home for grown-ups to read at Christmas. Rehearsals are going well for the Christmas play of The Nutcracker and we are singing the songs as we work in the classroom. Full steam ahead for a busy and exciting last week of term, before the Christmas holidays- phew!

Christmas spirit continues to fill the air in 2J this week; we started the week making Christingles for the carol concert in the school chapel. The children also decorated their own baubles, filled with a Christmas wish which they then hung on the library Christmas tree. We wrote Christmas cards to each other with one kind message inside to spread the Christmas joy. It has been a lovely wintry atmosphere in the classroom with our mini-Christmas tree, twinkly lights, Christmas songs on in the background and a crackling fire (on the big screen!). Rehearsals continue to be in full swing and we eagerly await our performance next week. In maths, we have been revising number through Christmas maths activities. The children have independently been selecting resources to help with their working out and using their reflective skills to apply different strategies. We have also been looking at using speech marks in our writing and how to

punctuate sentences correctly when using them. In art, we are persevering with our Firebird sewing and they are looking beautiful.

2J

Last week the children collaboratively used Puppet Pals on the iPads to retell the story of the Nutcracker. We have combined all of the scenes together to retell the whole story which you can watch by scanning the QR Code here. We hope you enjoy it! I hope you have a lovely weekend, get lots of rest ready for our big performance next week!

This week we have been putting the final touches to our Christmas performance. We have been busily rehearsing our moves and expression and had a lot of fun putting on our costumes for a dress rehearsal. We can’t wait to perform for our families next Wednesday! On Monday, our choir went over to the Chapel to record their singing for the whole school service. The children sang beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you Mrs Hayden for organising. We excitedly started our Advent calendars this week which led to us to discuss what this time of year means to us and all of things that we have to be grateful for. In our lessons with Mr Hardy we made our own Kindness Advent calendars and recognised the importance of giving to others in the form of words and actions, rather than gifts. In Maths we have been working on tricky word problems and showcased our knowledge of different methods of working when tackling our Christmas themed work! We particularly enjoyed

YEAR 3

working out multiplication and division sums to crack the code and reveal the answer to the Christmas jokes. What beats its chest and swings from Christmas cake to Christmas cake? TARZIPAN! We are extremely excited for next week. Christmas Play, Christmas Activity day and our Christmas dinner are just some of the things we are most looking forward to!
