13-18 (many past St Peter’s 2-8 children) and the finale was a Mary Poppins Medley that was brilliant. Unfortunately, parents and friends could not watch this performance, but you will be extremely impressed when it arrives in your inbox soon. On Tuesday evening the Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 organised a Valentine’s Disco for the children. The children danced and played games and had such a fun time. My thanks to all the staff who supervised the children and to the Friends for organising a fun experience for our children. The Friends of St Peter’s 2-8 have also organised a Nearly New Uniform Sale on Friday 11th March at 8.20am and 3.20pm an opportunity to purchase uniform and raise funds for the school charity. After half term, we will be organising a Parent and Toddler Group on a Thursday morning from 8.40 in the Dining Room. This will be led by a parent, Caroline Smith, and will be in the Dining Hall. All are welcome and please tell your friends and families that the school has started the group up again. My thanks to Caroline for organising the group. What a half term we have had at St Peter’s 2-8. I remember the school starting in September and I can't quite believe how the time has flown and that we have reached halfway through the academic year already. Huge thanks to all staff for all they have done this half term covering lessons, duties, after school care, before school care for colleagues who have been poorly, isolating or looking after family members. Thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard for the children who have thoroughly enjoyed their learning. Thank you to the parents and friends of the school for their continued support throughout half term. I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing half term break; I am travelling to Italy for half term on the Ski Trip at 8-13. It promises to be an exciting week. I look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 28th February.

TUESDAY

This week the children have been incredibly busy continuing their learning themes as reported in the newsletter. I have been impressed with the Year 3 tracking polar bears, investigating how far they have travelled each day; using this data the children have completed a whole host of data analysis in mathematics, they have also produced fabulous newspaper articles and news reports using green screens, reporting of the sighting of a polar bear. Year 2 have had a remarkably busy week and have moved on in their theme to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. They have been making cups of tea and writing instructions on how to make the perfect cup of tea. (Only in a school in Yorkshire...) The Year 1 children have been in the land of toys and have researched new and old toys. They even imagined what would happen if toys came alive, which inspired some highly creative writing. In Reception, love has been the theme with children designing and creating Valentine Day cards for one another, growing heart shaped crystals in a wonderful science experiment and baking heart shaped biscuits. I particularly enjoyed the very enthusiastic filming of the children retelling the story of the ‘Three Billy Goats Gruff’! Nursery have had a wonderful time with activities with a Valentine’s focus as you can see throughout the newsletter. Following on from Children’s Mental Health Week the children from Reception – Year 3 have attended a Wellbeing workshop this week. This was led by Openview Education on Tuesday and Wednesday. The children enjoyed the puppet shows that helped them to understand their feelings and the importance about talking about our worries. I am writing the introduction of this edition of the newsletter after being at the Whole School Foundation Concert. It was just brilliant for our choir to be in the same room as musicians from 8-13 and 13-18. Choirs from the three sections of St Peter’s sang beautifully and then there were instrumental groups from 8-13 and

CO-CURRICULAR CLUBS AFTER HALF TERM

Those clubs which were split will change over after half term; please see the newsletter front page for details of which clubs are split, and SOCS for details of which clubs your child is signed up for after half term. Thank you.

Lulu the Panda went missing in the carpark behind Queen’s after the whole foundation concert last night. Lulu is very precious – please keep your eyes peeled and return if found. Thank you.

MUSICAL NOTES Wow, what a fabulous end to the half term we had last night at the Whole School Foundation Concert! It was so lovely to finally meet together as a school again and to celebrate with music! Well done to all the children in choir, they sounded amazing! The words in their first song The Moment were very apt – “United in song, waiting so long, we’ll bring to life what we have planned. This is the moment that we’ve been waiting for, so let your voices ring out loud. And we know it’s going to be a treasured memory, sing it long, sing it strong, sing it proud!” Over the last two years your children have really had their resilience tested. They’ve had to cope with lots of changed plans and cancelled events and at last night’s concert they had to perform without their mummies, daddies and family there to support them. As you will see when the recording comes out, they really did everyone proud, what a fabulous bunch of superstars they all are. Fingers crossed the next concert will be full to the brim with an audience ready cheer them on!

APPEAL FOR BIKES AND TRIKES

Mrs. Coyle’s father in law who lives in her hometown, Telford, is a volunteer with a charitable organisation, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), who are supporting a number of Afghan families who have been airlifted to the UK as part of the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy. The families, around 120 people, are housed in a holding centre in an hotel in Telford, have been there since August of last year, and, according to the Home Office, will be there for many months more. With limited funding, the SVP has done remarkable work in an attempt to make life more bearable for the families, who came to the UK in the clothes they stood up in and with all they could carry in a single item of cabin luggage each. The SVP have begged and borrowed to provide clothing, personal necessities, toys, sporting goods, access to sporting facilities, mobile phones and much more. They are struggling just now to satisfy requests for trikes, stabiliser bicycles and adult bicycles to enable mums and their children to get out and about in the open air and away from the confines of their hotel bedrooms. Mrs. Coyle is appealing to you on behalf of the group to ask if you could provide any outgrown or unused bikes and trikes to help out, or even to donate some funding to help purchase secondhand ones. If you can help please email Mrs Coyle on A.coyle@stpetersyork.org.uk

St Peter’s Whole Foundation Concert February 17th, 2022

We will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March. This year’s theme is ‘You Are a Reader’ and aims to promote reading for pleasure. The children are invited to dress as a character from one of their favourite books on Thursday 3rd March, and we encourage costumes to be environmentally considerate. Our costume competition judges will be on the lookout for the most original costumes that comprise of ‘reduce, recycle and reuse’ elements from each year group!

Our photo competition is back too! Over half term, children are encouraged to complete the ‘World Book Day Reading Stars Challenge’. Please capture your favourite moments from the challenge in picture form! It might be a picture of your child reading a book in the garden or in an unusual place! Please send photos to j.salisbury@stpetersyork.org.uk.

8+ Reading Stars Challenge

A winning picture will be chosen from each year group. We will be looking for pictures that clearly show pleasure in reading.

PE Year 2 worked extremely hard on pass and move activities in netball, using their chest pass and overhead pass. The children worked collaboratively as a team and ensured they were always moving, to avoid being tagged but also to create space.

ACORNS

The Acorns have had a wonderful and varied week. It was lovely to see them dressing up to express themselves for well-being week. Many cards filled with lots of hearts and tons of glue went home to wish Mummies and Daddies a very happy Valentine’s Day. Despite some drizzle, our adventurous Acorns made their way to forest school. For some of our newest children, this was the first time they had been to

‘real’ forest school. We had such fun jumping into muddy puddles, eating biscuits on the log seats and swinging in the forest. The children have been busy completing puzzles, playing knights and princesses and cutting up leaves. We have braved the blustery blasts and have enjoyed whizzing about on the bikes. We hope you all have a great half term break and we look forward to hearing about it when we are back at school.

Love is in the air this week in Reception! The children have been making and sending Valentine cards to each other; exploring how to make love heart crystals in a special science investigation; creating 3d love heart gummy/cocktail stick structures in our STEM challenge; learning how to create graduated shades of red/pink and other colours in the painting area as well as baking lots of Valentine biscuits and cakes in our cooking area! Our book of the week 'In my Heart' helped us think about the way our 'heart' feels during different emotions and how we can help manage those more difficult feelings.

RECEPTION too!

In Forest School this week we went on a 'pair hunt' linked to our maths learning as well as children choosing to bug hunt with spotter sheets, magnifying glasses and specimen pots, build dens and make clay troll faces on the trees! Our love of all things 'space related' led to the creation of a very popular space control centre It has been lovely to see the children chose to and a new fascination with trolls has seen some practice mindful breathing and yoga in our well- very enthusiastic retelling and filming of the being loft, engage so thoughtfully in discussions 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' on our story table too! about feelings and showing care and concern for Have a wonderful week at home or away and we the feelings of others- we all had a wonderful time can't wait to see you all back in the new half in our special well-being workshops this week term!

YEAR 1 What a fabulous, final week we have had in Year 1 in the Land of Toys! We started the week discussing toys and the differences between new toys and old toys. We then imagined what it would be like if toys came alive and this really inspired our writing. We used a variety of adjectives, verbs and even adverbs to bring our writing to life! We have also developed our designing skills this week, when we designed how to make a toy. Just like true designers, we made our plan first and then thought carefully about what we might need to make our design, before making it using a variety of resources, including materials from

our new woodwork area. Also this week, the children attended a Feelings Workshop on Wednesday where they enjoyed a puppet show that helped them understand different feelings. It has been a truly fabulous first half of term and we are so proud of all of Year 1 and everything they have achieved.

We can’t wait to see you after half term, all rested and ready to start some more exciting learning! We wonder what land will visit us next? Wisha Wisha!

YEAR 1

YEAR 2 Year 2 went on a magical adventure on Friday to Northwood Trail Fairy Sanctuary in the hope of meeting our own magical creatures! Our imaginations were running wild along the enchanting trail as we saw Mermaid inhabited lakes, fairy villages in the treetops and weapons of giants! We visited the Fairy Museum where we were amazed by extraordinary artefacts which were discovered on the site, from fragments of elven clothing to a mermaid skeleton! This visit gave us hope that these magical creatures do exist and the children were inspired to create their own doorways. They then designed their own magical creatures, which they sketched and painted using watercolours. We were so impressed by their creativity and drawing skills. This week, we moved on to the next chapter of our key text, Alice in Wonderland, where Alice finds herself at the Mad Hatter's tea party! We enjoyed having our own tea party where the children made cups of tea (with a biscuit of

course!). They then wrote instructions on how to make the perfect cup of tea, focusing on punctuation and time connectives. Following on from Children's Mental Health Week, Year 2 took part in a wellbeing workshop which focused on talking about our feelings. The children met Chatty Parrot, Soothing Monkey and Calm Crocodile who showed us that a problem shared is a problem halved by talking about our worries. In maths, we have continued to explore fractions by moving on to fractions of quantities. The children solved challenges by sharing objects into equal groups and looked at applying these skills to real life situations by solving word problems. The Year 2 choir blew us away with their incredible singing at the concert this week, well done to all of the children involved! We hope you have a wonderful half term break and we shall look forward to more madness through Alice's adventures next term.
