proudly received on behalf of his house. During the week I have read two interesting articles in the press. Today in The Times, there is a fascinating article ‘How to Teach a Toddler, the Scandi Way'. It suggests that Britain’s education system is obsessed with results at 16 and 18 and argues that the Preschool years (up to 6 years old) are more important for a child’s future. The article presents overwhelming scientific evidence across a range of countries. It also states that while genes play a role in determining future success, culture also matters too. You can read the article here. The second article follows from the previous one. ‘The Big Idea; is it time to stop talking about ‘Nature versus Nurture’. Latest Science shows that genes and the environment are too deeply entwined to pit them against each other. The article discusses the latest scientific research and concludes that there needs to be no ‘versus’ in the equation, we simply have the kind of nature that requires nurture, and they are utterly intertwined. Therefore, the culture in a school needs to be supportive, collaborative, loving and secure where resilience (Finnish call it ‘Sisu’ or grit) resourcefulness and reflectiveness are explicitly taught and practised to create the right type of environment for children to thrive. This is exactly the type of environment the staff at St Peter’s 2-8 aim to create for the children. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

their favourite characters from their favourite books, and it was great to see such a variety of amazing costumes, many from the theme books they are reading in their year groups. Well done to all the children and the staff, it’s always such a fun day and I appreciate you all for being great sports and taking part. The children also participated in the ‘I am a reader’ photo competition by getting their photo taken in the most unusual places they could find to read. We have had children on camels, in a chicken coop and on top of a tractor wheel to name a few. Huge thanks to all for participating, prizes will be given out in assembly on Monday. Thank you to Mrs Salisbury for organising this wonderful week of reading activities for the children. Ms Veasey, the drama teacher at St Peter’s led drama workshops this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed these sessions. Ms Veasey will be working with St Peter’s 2-8 every week teaching drama, supporting our work with our theme stories that the children read in their class. This is a fantastic opportunity for the children, and we are delighted to have Ms Veasey at 2-8 on a regular basis. This morning we held our first in person celebration assembly of this term in the dining room. It was wonderful to gather all the children and staff together to share and celebrate the successes of the children across the school. Each member of staff gave their reasons for awarding their class Value Champion and Learning Superhero and Mrs Hayden awarded the Music Superheroes and Miss Flockhart the Sport Superheroes. It was also an opportunity to award the coveted House Point trophy to Micklegate for the week which Norman

DIARY FOR WEEK COMMENCING 7th MARCH 2022
MONDAY
I hope you all had a wonderful half term break. On Monday, it was lovely to hear about the exciting adventures the children had experienced during the week. I had the pleasure of supporting the St Peter’s 8-13 Ski Trip in Italy over half term. Several parents and children from 2-8 also joined the trip as they have older siblings at St Peter’s 8-13. The trip had been superbly organised by Mr Savage, and I must admit it was nice to enjoy some sunshine while we had fun on the slopes. The children have started this half term much in the same way as they ended the first half of the Easter term by being incredibly busy, purposeful, and productive with their learning. On Shrove Tuesday, children across the school created and cooked their very own pancakes, and at morning break we held our annual staff pancake race organised by Miss Flockhart. My thanks to the staff who took part and those who shouted words of encouragement along with the children from the sidelines. Congratulations to the winning team who won the race convincingly this year. Sadly I was not able to claim this victory, clearly I need to practice my flipping skills for next year! The children in Year 1 were fortunate to have a visitor this week who led a baking workshop, creating the most amazing ‘Cake Pops’ that were enjoyed by all. This was part of their themed story as the Year 1 children have landed in the ‘Land of Treats’. Thank you, Mrs Thomas, for your continued support, however, someone must have clearly eaten my cake pop as it failed to appear in my office?! Throughout this week we have been celebrating World Book Day. On Thursday children dressed as

MUSICAL NOTES
We have had our composers hats on in music this week. The children really enjoy writing their own music and have enjoyed linking their pieces to their class themes. Year 2 amazed me on Tuesday- the children enjoyed using their instruments from home to help them compose music for Alice. It was lovely to see how proud the children were of their instruments, how they looked after them carefully during the lessons and we all enjoyed hearing the children play their music. Year 1 have explored how you only need three notes to make an interesting piece. They have listened to Hans Zimmer’s Earth again, listening for the busy middle section and then used his influence to compose their own music which gets faster and faster. Reception finally found out what happened to the Teeny Weeny Tadpole and impressed me with their thoughtful jumping frog music using the chime bars. They have really understood the difference between high and low sounds and all made sure their frogs jumped back to the home note! Year 3 finished the week off composing their short motifs, passing them round their groups ready to put into a larger composition. We have been patiently waiting for the recording of the Whole School Concert to go live and I am pleased to say it is now ready for you to view! https://youtu.be/ Hm55URD6bIY I hope you enjoy the concert as much as we did on the night!
Guess Who?!
Despite the mixture of weather this week, it has been a brilliant first week back at school after half term. The children have clearly had fun, exciting adventures over the half term and it was clear to see they were very energetic to take part in their PE lessons this week.

ACORNS
‘Between the pages of a
book is a wonderful place to be.’(Anonymous). And that is exactly where we have been this week. The week has culminated with some fantastic, creative and adorable characters. We have had all sorts, ranging from Peter Rabbit to Zog. The children looked amazing, and we had such fun chatting about each of
the characters. Thank you so much for all the effort that went into making World Book Day such a memorable one. We have read the stories that were brought in from home and we have also been busy illustrating the front covers of our very own books. Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday and so we wandered off into the forest
and made some pancakes. What a treat! We have practiced our flipping skills and were really impressed by the skill of the teachers as they took part in the traditional Pancake Race. The Acorns loved it so much that they asked if they could have their very own pancake race. They were brilliant. What an amazing week we have had.
O
h what a ‘flippin’ great week we have had in Conkers!
What could be better than celebrating Pancake Day by making AND eating pancakes! Then, spending World Book Day dressed up as our favourite book characters!
CONKERS
The children were so delighted to be back with their friends this week after half term. What exciting things the children have been up to with you all! Obviously one of the most eagerly anticipated events this week was Pancake Day and especially the annual staff pancake race. It was great fun watching the teachers flip their pancakes and race in teams across the playground! They loved cheering their adults on with all the other children in school. In the afternoon the children had a chance to make their own pancakes as well as add their own toppings. We were so impressed with how thoughtful the children were about sharing the toppings and making sure they weren't using too many so that everyone had enough for theirs. We had all the favourites - chocolate, raspberries, blueberries and more! We also learnt about the meaning behind pancake day and how people celebrate it in other countries. We even learnt that some of the countries around the world don't even eat pancakes! In some Scandanavian countries they eat a sweet roll often filled with cream and in Finland they eat pea soup. We decided we liked the idea of pancakes best, especially the idea of eating the largest pancake ever made...it was huge! In some countries they celebrate in different ways such as the famous Mardi Gras festivals. The children enjoyed making their own masks for the Mardi Gras and having their own pancake race outside. Our second big celebration of the week was Book Week! It was the 25th year this year. The
RECEPTION children's outfits looked fabulous on Thursday! Well done all! We had lots of lovely chats about their favourite books and had a book day fashion show to display their amazing costumes. The children loved showing them off to their friends. We have been promoting the joy of reading books this week with a new snug reading area and lots of book sharing in class. We have also introduced our beautiful new interest books for the children. Each child has their own individual special book which they can go to at any time to write about things that interest them or to even write their own stories. The children have been very excited about it. We even have fancy new pencils to use which makes it even more special for them! In phonics we have been recapping all our tricky words and sounds and in maths it has been lots of measuring! We have been measuring our bodies, measuring snakes and even measuring how far we can catapult something. We have also been planting sunflower and bean seeds so we can see how they germinate and how tall we can make them grow over the Spring! RJ headed out on our first pop up classroom this week to the Railway museum. They enjoyed driving in the minibus (always the most exciting part) and looking at all the engines in a the museum. We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
RECEPTION
YEAR 1 The Land of Goodies… YUM YUM YUM!
‘amazing’ and ‘yummy’! What a truly special treat this was.
What a week the children have had in Year 1. We ventured up into the clouds to The Land of Goodies this week in our key text, The Magic Faraway Tree! The excitement and enthusiasm for this land from the children was just incredible to see! We have spent a great amount of time imagining a land where we could just eat anything from doors, windows, chimneys and much more and the children have been using fantastic adjectives to describe what they would taste like!
After the children had made their Cake Pop, we returned to the classroom to explore ‘Bossy Verbs’ and Time Conjunctions as we began to write our own instructions for how to make Cake Pops at home!
We have also been incredibly lucky to have had a wonderful parent come into school to bake some Cake Pops with the children on Tuesday morning. The children listened carefully to step by step instructions and followed them very well! They then had different themed sprinkles from the different lands that we have visited in the story and decorated them. Once the Cake Pops had set, the children then had the best part of eating them. They were ‘delicious’,
In the classroom and in keeping with this yummy land, the children have been exploring edible art! Using cereal, the children have been carefully gluing and producing wonderful pieces of art! They have spent a great amount of time and care of selecting the colours to produce the wonder pieces!
On Thursday, World Book Day, the children arrived to school dressed in the most AMAZING costumes and even attending a drama workshop in the morning! I wonder if you guessed who the teachers all were? I wish the Land of Goodies didn’t go away! Where will we go next?
YEAR 1
YEAR 2 Year 2 have had a fantastic week in the lead up to World Book Day! The children have taken on many different roles, one of these being a book editor. The children had to proofread a range of sentences from Alice in Wonderland and correct any errors around punctuation and spelling. We also took on the role of authors and had to write our own sentences for chapters of the story using the correct punctuation. But our favourite role of all was becoming... book trailer directors! The children had the challenge of designing their own persuasive and exciting book trailers for Alice in Wonderland. This task required planning, collaboration and drama skills. Our actors have just started filming and hope to be able to share these with you next week. This is the perfect time to mention how fantastic all of Year 2 looked on Thursday dressed up as book characters for World Book Day! We were very impressed with the sustainability, creativity and originality that went into their costumes. We had a fantastic drama workshop with the lovely
Ms Veasey and her wonderful drama students from St Peter's 13-18. The children used their understanding of our key text to perform chapters from the story. The Year 2 teachers are already looking forward to seeing some of the children on the big St Peter's stage in a few years with the talent they showed in the workshop. We had such a fantastic time - thank you so much for having us Ms Veasey! As we move on to the next chapter of our story, we have been introduced to the Queen of Hearts’ gardeners who are frantically painting the white roses red. We have been exploring plants and flowers this week through looking at the different parts of a plant, their important jobs and planting our own bulbs and seeds. We also carried out our own science experiment where we placed a range of white flowers in water with red food colouring - can you guess what happened? A fantastic start to this half term Year 2 - have a wonderful weekend!
YEAR 2
One of our highlights this week was celebrating World Book Day. It was wonderful to see such creative and original costumes and hear the children talking about their favourite books and characters with such enthusiasm. As part of our celebrations, we held a costume fashion parade, created new characters using the game character soup and explored drama skills in a fun and fabulous drama workshop with Mrs Veasey. We have also been busy developing our measuring skills in Maths this week. We measured lengths in cm and converted our measurements to mm, too. We have also been
YEAR 3
using our addition and multiplication skills to calculate areas and perimeters of shapes.
Linked to our core text The Last Bear, we explored the reasons behind the melting of the Arctic sea ice. We investigated the greenhouse gases and how the contribute to global warming. We explored the work of Greta Thunberg and thought about how we can reduce our carbon footprint.
