You can follow us staff enough for all of their preparation during the Easter break to create these environments for the children. Throughout the week it has been wonderful to observe children learning outside both in outdoor play areas, forest school and breakout spaces around our campus. On Thursday you probably would have recognised a creative doodle if you used the Google search engine. This doodle was in celebration of Earth Day 2021. Earth Day celebration takes places each year on April 22nd to remind ourselves to protect the environment, nourish it and contribute to a better planet. The Google doodle captures generation after generation recognising trees’ significance for our bright future through a small video. It starts with an old lady reading a book while her granddaughter plants a sapling. It further shows people passing on the tradition and teaching them valuable life lessons with visible climate change. Earth Day is a reminder to step up or measures to protect the planet we call home. During the Easter break there was an Easter Holiday Week arranged for the children at school. This was organised brilliantly by Miss Flockhart entertaining over 220 children each day. They played sport, experienced a range of art and crafts, played on bouncy castles and inflatable assault courses, created delicious cakes

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the start of the Summer Term. A warm welcome to our new children and families who joined the St Peter’s 2-8 community on Monday and we all look forward to getting to know you over the coming days, weeks and years. I hope you all have had a wonderful Easter holiday. It was such an exciting start to the term, children running into school desperate to find out what their theme for the term was going to be. This term we have a whole school theme, ‘Grab you backpack, we are off on our travels’. Each year group have chosen a country or continent to travel to from York. They are going to investigate the cultures and customs of their particular country and also become global citizens by supporting a small charity helping people who are not as fortunate as ourselves. As ever the theme in each year group will have a core storybook that will be central to their learning journey. Year 1 - Elephants of the Tsunami by Jana Laiz. Year 2 - Madagascar: The Movie Storybook and Into The Jungle by Katherine Rundell. Year 3 - The Boy Who Biked The World by Alastair Humphreys. Over the course of the week two lemurs were delivered in crates to Year Two, Year One have been typing fabulous letters on an old-fashioned ribbon typewriter and celebrated the Songkran festival with an epic water party and Year Three have made papier maché globes for Earth Day (more on this below.) The classrooms and learning spaces are absolutely inspiring places and I can’t thank the and biscuits, visited forest school to create dens and climb trees, made camp fires to cook marshmallows and s’mores and used iPads to create short animations and films. It was such a brilliant week, my thanks to all of the staff who gave up their holiday to work for the children. This term we have many events planned and all can be found on the calendar online: http:// calendar.stpetersyork.org.uk/. We are planning to have a swimming gala, sports day, celebration at the end of the term showcasing the children’s learning throughout the term and a leavers’ event for Year 3. The regulations at a particular time will determine how we can run and host these events and we will keep the school community informed via our Tuesday email and the Newsletter. On the last day of the Easter Term the Times Educational Supplement informed us that we have been shortlisted for the Independent School of the Year. This is such a remarkable achievement and a reflection on the phenomenal team effort from the school community over the past year. This year there isn’t an awards

ceremony in London due to Covid-19; it will be an online virtual awards evening next Friday. I have been so impressed by all of the children this week who have been so excited about seeing their friends and teachers. They have displayed admirable resilience throughout this year and I have been incredibly proud of all of them. I am looking forward to seeing the Reception children in the morning in the swimming pool.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend. Best wishes,

Notice Board MUSICAL NOTES

HEADLICE Unfortunately we have cases of headlice in Acorns and Year 2. Please check your child(ren)’s head(s) and treat accordingly. https:// www.nhs.uk/ conditions/headlice-and-nits/

The children have come back to their Music lessons full of energy this week! They are so excited by their new topics and we are looking forward to exploring the music of different countries together! Year 1 have begun to explore the Pentatonic scale which is very important in the music of East Asia. Year 2 and 3 have enjoyed singing some simple African Call and Response songs, but are especially excited to get their hands on the lovely Djembe drums we have borrowed from 8-13! Reception are going on a slightly different musical journey this term, first stop, a rather Scary Castle. They have started exploring what makes music sound frightening! Next week they are going to have a go composing their own pieces so I hope they are feeling brave! This week has also seen the return of our fabulous Year 2 and 3 bubble choirs! Both groups are going to be busy preparing for the Whole School Concert and our year group celebration concerts at the end of May. As always it’s so lovely to have the school filled with the sound of music! Choir We will be once again holding choir in our year group bubbles. All children are welcome. We have got a busy term ahead preparing for our Whole School Concert, Year Group Concerts and the End of Year celebrations! Year 2 will have choir on a Wednesday at 12pm, Year 3 on a Thursday at 12pm. If your child would like to take part they just need to come along to the Rayson Room ready for the rehearsal, no need for a sign-up sheet! As usual, we try to encourage the children to commit to the activities they sign up for, so choir will be for the whole term. Music Concerts We will be celebrating the children’s amazing musical talents in a series of year group concerts at the end of this half term. Year 1 – Monday 24th May at 1.30pm (Music from the whole year group plus recorder players)

LOST PROPERTY Daisy C-S (2J) is missing a named school jumper (size 26) and a named grey unicorn sweatshirt. Aria A (Nursery) has lost a named navy school coat.

Year 2 – Tuesday 25th May at 1.30pm (Music by our soloists and Year 2 Choir) Year 3 - Friday 28th May at 10.30am (Music by our soloists and Year 3 Choir) If your child would like to play a solo on their instrument, please can you email me a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can add them to my list? For our Year 1 recorder children it will be their first concert. Ms Leeman-Brown will be preparing them for the concert, she may ask them to play as part of a small group to give them confidence for their debut performance! We would usually look forward to welcoming parents and grandparents into school for our concerts, however we will unfortunately not be able to do that this time. We are planning on a similar set up to the Christmas Plays where our parents will be on a screen via Zoom for the children to see and the concert will be live streamed so our audience can see/hear the concert properly! More details to follow once we have the finer details. Many thanks for your continued support, I’m really looking forward to hearing how much the children have come on playing their instruments this year! Mrs Hayden

House Captains

MONK Hi I am Lochie!!! I live with my dog Inde and my two sisters. I enjoy building and creating things and love wood work. On holiday I go to Cornwall where I like to go swimming and crabbing. I love adventure and helping out in the garden. I do a lot of walking because of my dog which I mentioned earlier who is a black working cocker. My favourite food is my dad’s home made sausage casserole which he often makes. My favourite sport is rugby which I play on Sunday with my friends. I would like to encourage Monk to win sports day and work hard to get lots of house points!!!! Well Done Monk!!!

LOCHIE

MICKLEGATE My name is Alice and I am very happy to be Micklegate’s new House Captain this term! I live with my mum, dad and my little brother, George. I have pet fish and I sometimes look after my neighbour’s dog, Sky, and cat, Felix. I like to play outside, I like bouncing on my pogo stick and I play piano. I want to be a good house captain and I hope we win lots of points.

ALICE

Go, Micklegate!

WALMGATE My name is Bertie. I am age 8 and I live in Bishopthorpe. I’ve got a dog called Poppy and she is a very cheeky dog like for instance, she pinches daddy’s slippers, she takes everyone’s socks and she always tries to get leftovers. In lockdown a new cousin was born and he was added to the family tree. He is called Freddie. My three favourite hobbies are chess, football and cricket. Chess is fun because when you win you really feel proud of yourself. I like football because there is lots of action in it and the reason I like being goalkeeper rather than a different position is that the action never stops and that’s why I like goalkeeper the best. The reason I love cricket is that it’s so unpredictable for instance when Australia could be winning 90% England could still win and that’s the reason I love cricket. When I grown up I would like to be a cricket player because there is so many things that you could do but batting is my favourite because when you hit the ball you feel very good about yourself. Catching and bowling are my second favourite things because when you catch it you feel that nice slam feeling and I like that.

BERTIE

As House Captain I would like to point out to people that everyone has a purpose in life and they have something special that they are good at and do their best at. I would like to do more charity fundraising.

Year 3 had some lovely sunny weather for their first PE lessons of the Summer term. In their Core PE lessons this term, the children are participating in Athletics. This week, the focus was on sprinting. To determine the best technique for sprinting, the children completed a series of running experiments, during which they tested a number of different techniques, such as running with their arms straight by their sides and running whilst turning their heads from side to side. After discussing what contributes to an effective sprinting technique, the children worked in pairs to coach

each other over a 50m sprint, giving technical feedback using a checklist. At the end of the lesson, the children put their sprinting techniques to the test, completing a timed 50m race. It was great to see everyone completing the race with such determination and focus. In their Games lessons this term, the children are doing Rounders. This week, we looked at bowling. After discussing the points of a good underarm bowling technique, the children worked in groups of three, taking turns to be a bowler, a batter and a backstop in

order to practice their bowling. To ensure the bowl was accurate, the ‘batter’ held up a hulahoop at the same height that they would hold a rounders bat. The bowler aimed to get the ball through the middle of the hula-hoop for the backstop to catch. The children demonstrated excellent teamwork skills giving constructive technical feedback to the bowler on how to improve the accuracy of their throw. All the children demonstrated some impressively accurate bowls, which was brilliant to see. Well done Year 3!

RECEPTION

Starting the summer term in style!

The Reception children have returned to school after the Easter holiday and have brought the sunshine and happiness with them, all ready for the start of their back-pack adventures! In preparation for the adventures that we will be having over the next term, the children have been exploring the world that we live in. Using an iPad and QR codes, the children have been able to navigate their way around the entire world, learning incredible facts about all of the different countries! The confidence that the children had when using the QR codes was very impressive to see! The teachers have been busy sharing their favourite back-pack adventures throughout the week. Through the use of objects and photographs, the children discovered many different facts about the places and had lots of questions to ask about them! We think lots of holidays may need to be booked when the world opens up again! We can’t wait to find out about your adventures next week!

sizes were available to buy! The smell of the different flavours of herbs and spices made them a natural sell out! The children have been working out the different ways to pay for the same amount using different coins and most importantly got to buy some beautiful items! An old fashioned typewriter appeared in the classroom which triggered lots of curiosity and questions! The children’s little fingers have been hard at work as they have learnt how to type words and operate the typewriter! Lots of concentration and persistence were needed whilst transferring the lower case letters to capital letters – it is a good job we have many learning superheroes in our setting!

There really has been a creative spark in the sunshine this week as some children have become true fashion bag designers and have been hard at work designing the most wonderful and stylish bags from scratch! Alongside this, lots of children have transformed themselves into true make-up artists as they have been face painting their friends’ faces. Lots of symmetrical and creative designs such as butterflies and even moustaches Shops have been popping up all week both indoors have been seen around the classroom! The team and outdoors! A beautiful florist opened up work, fun, excitement and collaboration here was outside where the children have been using real nothing short of magic to see. money to buy different flowers and herbs! RECEPTION

YEAR 1

What a wonderful start we have had to the Summer term in Year 1! We have loved exploring all the new areas in our classrooms this week and have been incredibly busy. We have been buzzing with excitement to see our friends again and it has been lovely to hear about the children's Easter holidays and spending time with relatives they have missed over Lockdown. On Tuesday afternoon we celebrated the Thai New Year by taking part in our very own Songkran festival. There were super soakers, buckets of water and foam blasters in every direction, the

teachers certainly had fun too! After so much running around we fancied a sweet treat and enjoyed some mango, lychees, and pineapple with our friends. As we write this week's news, we are also looking forward to celebrating Hanami on Friday by having a picnic under the blossom trees at school. Every spring, the islands of Japan are decorated in clouds of delicate pink as the cherry trees blossom with new life. The locals and visitors in Japan love admiring the cherry blossoms and enjoy a picnic party with their family and friends beneath the trees. We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and can't wait for more fun next week.

YEAR 1

Meet our two newest members of Year 2, our mysterious lemurs! Mrs Hallgate delivered some suspicious looking crates to the Year 2 children first thing on Monday morning and we soon realised that these packages had arrived at the wrong destination! The labels on the crates informed us that the delivery destination should in fact have been a National Park in Africa, not St Peter's 2-8! After some research and discussion between the children we discovered that lemurs are native to only Madagascar. Mrs Hall and Miss Jeffrey managed to locate the Madagascar story books from the School library and we loved learning about the different characters in the story, as well as learning about a very famous lemur King Julien. This has inspired us to find out more about Madagascar and lemurs; the children have begun creating information posters and recording interesting facts which they have retrieved from texts. In maths, we have been looking at measuring weight using standard units. Mrs Franey brought in some very heavy bags of horse food for us to estimate the weight of. We also used equipment to weigh our lemurs, just like they would in a zoo, and used grams to calculate the measurements. The

children then weighed items from around the classroom using their knowledge of measuring so far and collaborative skills. As Sir Tom Moore would have been approaching his 101st birthday, and it is nearly the one year anniversary of his extraordinary efforts to raise money for the NHS, Year 2 have decided to take part in the 100 Challenge in his honour. We discovered that chameleons are another popular animal found in Madagascar and therefore we have set ourselves the challenge of drawing 100 unique chameleons! The children in Year 2 have also set themselves their own personal targets for this challenge such as completing 100 cartwheels; we are so proud of them for taking on the challenge. The children have used a range of media of their choice to create their chameleon including oil pastels, soft pastels, watercolours and felt tips. What a wonderful start to the summer term and to our new theme! Well done Year 2, have a lovely weekend in the sunshine, we can't wait to see where our learning takes us next week!

YEAR 2

Year Three are on the road to Africa! It has been an incredible start to our adventure. We have decided to join Tom, the main character from our book ‘The Boy Who Biked the World’ by Alastair Humphreys, in his mission to bike to Africa! In preparation for our adventure, we have packed our bags and mapped out a route from England, through Europe to Africa. We have made our own passports to ensure that we will be able to cross borders and travel to different countries without being stopped and used sticks and yarn at Forest School to design a name tag for our rucksacks. We read that Tom had daydreamed about visiting lots of different countries and dreamed of seeing famous landmarks. We researched some of the incredible structures and places he wanted to visit and had a go at drawing them. The Eiffel Tower,

YEAR 3

Mayan Ruins and Taj Mahal were amongst our designs. There was lots of discussion about whether or not we thought Tom should go on his adventure. After all, he is only a young boy! This led to a great debate and opinions were divided as to the reasons why he should/shouldn’t go! We used this as a stimulus to write to Tom to persuade him what we thought he should do. We revisited the main points in our story so far and made a story map of the main events. After reenacting it (which was VERY fun!), we wrote a recount as if we were Tom, detailing what happened and how we were feeling. We celebrated World Earth Day on Thursday by creating acrostic poems and used papier-mache to create small globes. We are looking forward to painting these next week and hope to use them during our adventure. For the next part of our adventure, we are leaving home and heading with Tom to France! Watch this space…
