FRIDAY
Conference. Teachers and teaching assistants from independent and state schools across the north will join us for a day of inspiring and thoughtprovoking workshops designed to support their teaching practice in Early Years, KS1 and KS2. The conference will open with a keynote from Judy Murray, OBE before delegates will split into three groups to enjoy workshops from Dave Godfrey (Primary Maths Consultant and creator of Number fun), Claire Gadsby (Educational Consultant, Trainer and Author), Kym Scott (The Place to Learn) and Billy Hickling (The TrashBang Man). Please email me if you know of any teachers who would like to attend as it will be a great day of learning and networking with staff across the sector. Last week in the newsletter I announced the House Captains for Monk, Micklegate and Walmgate. Please do enjoy reading their biographies later in the newsletter. I am looking forward to swimming in the morning with the reception children, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend when it arrives.
THURSDAY
through France and Italy before arriving in Suez, Egypt. On Thursday they experienced a French day and enjoyed a number of fun and exciting activities including baking French baguettes, creating STEM soap powered boats with Miss Collins and created the most amazing artwork of the Eiffel Tower. Brilliant! Year 1 had a brilliant afternoon joining a bushcraft workshop led by one of our parents, Mr Tickle. The children learned how to create shelters by following the instructions given, make a campfire and use their knot tying skills to make stick men, stars, and other items. My thanks to Mr Tickle for kindly giving up his time for the children’s enjoyment. I know how much Year 1 are enjoying
these sessions, next week it will be the turn of 1C. On Saturday 14th May, we are hosting our eighth Northern Learning

They had a fantastic presentation from a diver who worked in the navy and is now a commercial diver. Thank you, Tim Hall and also thanks to Mrs Hall for organising this. Year 2 have created the most stunning zones of the ocean in jam jars, using oils and coloured water to demonstrate their learning. The DEI group made up from the children in Years 1-3 as part of the pupil voice contribution across the school met this week. Mr Walters was incredibly impressed with their ideas topics included the curriculum, sport and uniform. Impressive work, well done! Year 3, as part of their themed book Around the World in 80 days, have departed London, travelled
TUESDAY
It was lovely to pop into nursery this week to hear about the different adventures and places the children visited on holiday. I listened to a child who went to a Greek Island. She explained clearly all the activities she enjoyed (which mainly involved the pool). The nursery children then asked questions to find out more information. The conversations were wonderful and showed the importance of encouraging speaking and listening with young children. On Wednesday we had the return of ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’. Our wellbeing champions in Year 3 visited all classes in school leading two sessions, Thought Bubbles! Mindfulness for Children and Rainbow Relaxation – Mindfulness for Children. The Y3 children enjoyed teaching the younger children and proved to be brilliant ambassadors for the school. On Tuesday and Thursday Reception children had an exciting adventure to Harlow Carr in Harrogate. The children’s knowledge about plants were put to the test deciphering the four parts of a plant. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day walking around the gardens, doing forest school activities, identifying plants and a nature hunt. The children in all three classes were super ambassadors for the school behaving so well, asking brilliant questions, making all of the staff

MUSICAL NOTES I think we have just about landed back to earth after the excitement of our Young Voices Concert last week! We are now busy preparing for our next set of concerts which will be held at the end of this half term in the Rayson Room. Our informal concerts are the perfect opportunity for our pupils to perform, many for the first time, to a kind, supportive audience. It is quite nerve-racking performing solo in front of an audience so we try to ensure that our pupil’s first concerts are held in a familiar environment with lots of smiley faces to give encouragement! Please see the details for the concerts below. Year 1 Music Concert Tuesday 24th May, 2pm If your child is learning recorder with Ms Leeman-Brown there will be an opportunity for them to perform for the first time in the Rayson Room to an audience of parents! The concert will be made up of individual performance and small group pieces and the whole year group will also be singing a few songs they have been learning in their music lessons this term. The concert will start at 2pm, it is informal and a lovely first opportunity for our children to share their music journey. Year 2 Music Concert, Monday 23rd May, 1.30pm, Rayson Room There will be an informal concert for all our Year 2 children who are learning an instrument in school. If your child would like to play a piece in the concert, please email a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can add them to the programme. The Year 2 and 3 choir will also be singing at the Year 2 concert. For some of our children it will be their first concert as a soloist which is very exciting! We’re very much looking forward to welcoming our Year 2 parents to this concert. Year 3 Music Concert, Wednesday 25th May, 1.30pm, Rayson Room There will be an informal concert for all our Year 3 children who are learning an instrument in school. If your child would like to play a piece in the concert, please email a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can add them to the programme. The Year 2 and 3 choir will also be singing at the Year 3 concert. For some of our children it will be their first concert as a soloist which is very exciting! We’re very much looking forward to welcoming our Year 3 parents to this concert.

PE
Acorns and Conkers have worked extremely hard on their rolling technique since the start of the Summer Term. The children initially started off by sitting on the floor and pushing their ball out in front, for it to roll along the floor. They then had the enjoyment of running after their ball, to squash it down with their hand to stop it. The children have now progressed onto a standing position, squeezing the ball tightly in one hand to roll it forward and chase after it. Miss Flockhart was extremely impressed by how quickly the children adapted their rolling skill to a standing position. The children were then given an extra challenge, as they had to try and knock down a skittle, placed 5m in front of them. They soon realised the importance of the crocodile clap, in order to successfully roll their ball straight in front of them to knock the skittle down. It was lovely to see the children smiling with pride, when they knocked over their skittle.
ACORNS
The Acorns have had another great week at school. After reading some lovely books about animals and farms, we decided to set up our very own farm stall in Nursery. We have chatted about where we think milk comes from and the children have assured me that we get our milk from the cows! The children have loved being able to take turns being the shopkeeper and have enjoyed choosing their own fruit and vegetables from the stall, placing the items into the eco-friendly brown bags and paying for their produce using their cards. We have experienced different textures such as rice and lentils as we have driven the tractors through the different fields. We have enjoyed singing, Old Macdonald Had a Farm, The
Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow and Sleeping Bunnies. The Shambles Market sells some lovely fresh produce and so we thought the best thing to do would be to take the Acorns to see a ‘real’ market. We had a lovely walk along the river and stopped off in the museum gardens for a snack. We then chose our own fruit/vegetables from the market, paid the assistant and headed back to school. It was a delightful outing and the children loved it! This week we were so privileged to have the Year 3 Wellbeing Champions with us for some mindfulness rainbow painting. We have spent the rest of the time playing inside Nursery. What a happy week.
Wow! What holiday fun we have been having!
This week we have continued with our interest in holidays! It has been lovely to hear more about the different adventures and find the places we have visited on our map of the world. We have even been exploring where we might want to travel to, and what we might take with us in our suitcase!
CONKERS
The highlight of this week in Reception must be the trip to Harlow Carr in Harrogate! Our gardening and plant knowledge was put to the test as we talked about how plants grow and learning about the four parts of a plant. We learnt actions to help us remember the roots, stem, leaves and flower.
RECEPTION
children’s interests have gone from learning about rainforests, inspired by trips abroad, to fossil hunting, where we looked at the different shapes and patterns made by animals. Focus skills Next, we went on a walk around the sessions have looked at floating and gardens choosing our favourite plants sinking which led on to designing and and looking more closely at the leaves and flowers with our magnifying glasses, making water runs in the outside classroom and junk modelling joins to paying attention to the different sizes, create treasure box keys and trees for a colours and shapes. The children were then led to the woodland area where they park or woodland. investigated how old the trees were by In Literacy, we have been inspired by our wrapping string around the tree trunks. book ‘Shark in the Park’ and looked at more rhyming words to create rhyming The day was finished with an I Spy hunt around the gardens and of course, a stop sentences. at the play area where even the teachers had a play! All the children behaved marvellously, and all the teachers were so proud of the children with their interesting questions and super learning.
In Maths, we created Numicon cities whilst we looked at numbers between 10 and 20. The children challenged their partners to create a building out of Numicon, thinking about what we need to add to 10 to make our number.
For the rest of the week the children have Another great week of super learning, been busy in all areas of provision. The well done Reception!
RECEPTION
YEAR 1 This week in Year 1 we have started a super exciting project, designing and making our very own deep-sea creatures. We had to think about how they would move, their colours, how they would breathe and if they had a light source to see in the dark waters. The children have been so creative and imaginative, and they all look amazing. You will have to wait and see the finished designs later in the year. On Wednesday afternoon, 1E enjoyed a
bushcraft workshop at forest school with Mr Tickle. 1C are looking forward to their turn next week and can't wait to make some amazing dens! We have all been really enjoying our new classrooms and have made some brilliant small world areas, creating a variety of levels to represent the different zones in the sea. I wonder if anyone can remember what they are called? We hope you all have a fantastic weekend, and we look forward to new to week.
YEAR 1
YEAR 2 Year 2 have dived (excuse the pun) further into learning about the oceans this week by discovering all about the zones of the ocean. We have made posters showing the different layers and even an ocean in a jar, using oils and coloured water to demonstrate what we have learnt. The e-book Deep Down Weird told us all about the creatures that live in the depths of the oceans and they are VERY weird! The children have loved the research element to all of this work and enjoyed learning new words and using them. Did you know that bio-luminescence means the ability of creatures to make their own light? Whilst rare in land creatures, this is very common in creatures living in marine
habitats. The children are becoming experts in marine life and, with this theme, there is always so much to learn! On Thursday morning we had a fantastic presentation from Tim (Mr Hall’s brother) who has worked as a diver for many years, first in the Navy and now as a commercial diver. He told us all about how diving works, what it does to our bodies and also brought in some fascinating equipment. We learnt how to communicate underwater with hand signals and ropes and he even showed us a couple of science experiments to explain buoyancy. We are all really enjoying our learning and, after a weekend of rest, we will be back for more on Monday!
YEAR 2
This week we have been on an exciting journey, departing London and travelling through France and Italy before arriving in Suez, Egypt. Every morning whilst in France we enjoyed some delicious treats, such as pains au chocolat, crêpes, baguettes and croissants. Although, we discovered that croissants didn’t actually originate from France, but from Austria! Using the iPads and information sheets, we carried out some research, learning about the culture, famous landmarks and all the delicious delicacies the country has to offer.
YEAR 3
from the bank and is being hunted by Detective Fix. We created wanted posters to appeal for his finding and wrote informative newspaper articles about the scandal! There was also much discussion about whether or not we felt that it was indeed Fogg, or if he had been set up! Fogg and Passepartout are always on the move as they’re in a hurry to complete their challenge of travelling around the world in 80 days, so we have kept an eye on On Thursday we had a French day and their progress by tracking it on a calendar. enjoyed a number of fun and exciting activities across the classrooms. We baked After whizzing through days and months of the year, we moved on to recapping and French baguettes with Miss Murray, made progressing with telling and converting STEM soap powered boats with Ms Collins and did Art with Mrs Salisbury based on the time. We will continue to work with time incredible Eiffel Tower. In our story, Phileas next week and hope to see Fogg on time to complete his bet! Fogg has been accused of robbing money
YEAR 3
Bag2School - Wednesday 18th to Friday 20th May
Our previous Bag2School event was such a huge success that we thought we would run it again in the Summer Term. It is a great fundraiser for the school charity (100% of money raised through this initiative goes to The Children's Heart Surgery Fund) and is a fantastic and easy way to get rid of any unwanted clothes, bed linen, soft toys, handbags etc. Donations will be collected in the usual place - by the shed behind Nursery. Thanks
Clif-Fest - Sunday 26th June
Preparations for Clif-Fest are now in full swing and we are so excited to finally get to have our school fête again! There will be a Bird of Prey demonstration, inflatables, BBQ, ice cream, games, stalls, reptiles... the list goes on! And we have also organised for the sun to shine (!) so it is sure to be an amazing day. Please pop the date in your diaries now. As the term goes along we will be asking parents/carers for a few donations to help with some of our stalls (books, bottles etc). We will announce what we may need and when we would like it brought in to school in future correspondence but would be grateful for any donations you are able to give. The other thing which we always ask for is volunteers to help on the day. Any parents/family members who are willing and able to give an hour of their time to help man a stall or inflatable are very much appreciated. More to come on that later in the term! Please see the poster at the end of this Newsletter for further event information.
