It has been an incredibly busy and exciting week at St Peter’s 2-8! I’m always astounded by just how much we manage to pack in as we hurtle towards the end of term.
The highlight of the week was most definitely Sports Day, which is always one of the most memorable events of the year made extra special through the link with our whole school Olympic theme of the term. The children participated with endeavour like true Olympians doing their very best, respect, cheering and supporting each other, and in a spirit of enjoyment in competing and having fun! I was incredibly proud of each and every one of the children for making our Sports Day such a success. Many thanks to Miss Flockhart and Mrs Williams for organising the day, which is quite some feat, and to the staff from the PE department who supported the event. Thank you to the teachers and teaching assistants for their part in ensuring the children had a wonderful experience and especially to Miss Collins who is our official scorer for the swimming gala and Sports Day and does a fantastic job. It was lovely to see so many of you there supporting the children on a glorious sunny day too. You can read more about Sports Day along with the results in Miss Flockhart’s newsletter piece. Thank you to Friends for providing breakfast before the Reception and Year 1 Sports Day which I know was enjoyed by all those parents who attended.
I hope that your children enjoyed moving up afternoon on Tuesday. I visited each class in turn, and it was lovely to see the children getting to know their
new teachers and teaching assistants and classmates. I know that transition can be a time that can cause some anxiety, but the staff are very adept at supporting children, and a new class with new classmates offers many opportunities for resilience building, social interaction and collaboration; skills that are so important for future success. We also welcomed new children and their families, all of whom were excited but slightly nervous too. I know that you’ll join with me in extending a warm welcome to the brand new children and their families to our school community. We also welcomed Mrs Dewhurst and Miss Bird to our teaching staff.
The Friends of St Peter’s Clif Fest is taking place on Sunday and promises to be a fabulous fun-filled day packed with activities for adults and children alike. If you have not yet managed to purchase your tickets, you will still be able to do so at the gate. It is always a great day out and I hope to see lots of you there.
Next week we have two big events for the children to look forward to. On Tuesday our house captains have organised a wellbeing fun day which will include a barbecue, games and inflatables, and on Friday we will be taking part in the whole school walk. We will write to you with all of the information you need to know for both events so please do look out for our email.
I hope that you have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine.

MUSIC
Instrumental Lessons in School for the Autumn Term
As we head to the end of term, I will be starting to talk to the children in Reception to Year 2 about the different instruments available to learn from September. If your child is already learning an instrument in school and you would like them to continue, you do not need to do anything.
If your child is currently in Year 1 and has been learning the recorder, please note their lesson will become a 30min lesson from September unless you wish to give notice.
In Year 2 we usually recommend only having lessons on one musical instrument. In Year 3, we can discuss pupils having lessons on two instruments where appropriate.
If you would like to give notice on music lessons, please do so by emailing a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk.
If you would like to sign your child up to learn a new instrument, please fill in the following form St Peter's 2-8: Request for Music Lessons (office.com).
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Hayden.
Individual Music lessons are offered for the following instruments:
Year 1 - recorders, taught in pairs. Please note you do not need to sort out a pair of children to sign your child up, our recorder teacher will sort the pairings out in September. The cost for Year 1 lessons are £12.75 per lesson.
Year 2 and 3 lessons are all taught as individual lessons on the following instruments:
• Year 2 - Recorder, piano, violin, drums, cello and guitar
Year 3 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, pocket cornet (smaller version of a cornet/trumpet, once the child has grown enough, they can transfer onto a full sized instrument easily) or pbone (lighter version of a trombone - students once grown enough can easily transfer onto a trombone from this instrument) and drums.
The fees for 2024/25 lessons in Year 2 and 3 are:
£25.50 per 30-minute lesson. Hire charge of £37 per term where appropriate. Please note we do not hire recorders, guitars or pianos.
For Current Year 3’s who are wishing to continue music lessons, please sign up again via the 8-13 Welcome Pack.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
School Council presented an assembly to the school on Monday. They used a short film by David Attenborough who has worked all his life on conservation and protecting our world by educating people as he felt that "no one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced." He opened up a world of beauty and science for people to see in their own living rooms. The children loved seeing this short film by him , It's a wonderful world, to see how amazing our world actually is and therefore we must try to protect it.
See the film here. https:// www.youtube.com/watch?

School council then went on to explain ways everyone can help look after our world using information they had gained from visits by Mr Swales and Mrs Hall in 13-18. These included switching taps off while cleaning teeth which saves up to 20l of water, reducing how much we buy and use, repairing items, reducing use of single use plastic, recycling and not leaving litter after picnics etc.
We also launched our new "special recycling " collections to help Mrs Hall.
Please save:
GROUND COFFEE BAGS, CRISP PACKETS AND PLASTIC PENS
These can be put in the orange bins in the Reception, Thank you.
Well done Council a fantastic assembly, Mrs Franey was very proud of you all.
Whole School Fundraiser
As you are aware, on Friday 28 June we are asking all pupils and staff and OPs to participate in a whole school sponsored walk, run or swim. Some will not be able to take part on the day but may still plan an activity of their own choice. No enterprise is too small, and every effort is worthwhile.
This is intended to be a pupil led fundraising day so we hope they will find lots of innovative ways to raise their sponsorship money.
If each pupil raises £10, we will be able to donate over £12,000! All money raised will be split equally across the following organisations:
• The Island
• York Mind
• MND Association Rob Burrow Campaign
• My Name’5 Doddie Foundation
• St Peter’s School Keys for Life Bursary Campaign
Fundraising is gathering pace with well over £ 1900 raised already for good causes. Thank you to all who have donated so far!
A reminder that you are able to pay in your sponsorship money or donate on our fundraising page here.
On September 15th, the Medical Team will be taking part in the Northumberland Coast Mighty Hike half marathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Sian Mortimer, our school nurse, shares her thoughts on the upcoming fundraiser:
"As many of you may already know, our own Angie has recently battled breast cancer. Angie is the heart of our department, and has shown such positivity and resilience in her journey. Macmillan has been a real support to her during this time, and we wanted to help give back by raising money for this worthy charity."
We know that there are many great causes to give to, but should you be able to help in any amount, please donate Here
This year’s much anticipated Cabaret concerts will be happening on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June. With acts including the Swing Band, School Choir, Chamber Choir, and Upper Sixth Form soloists, it promises to be a fun filled evening of pop and jazz performances.
Everyone is warmly invited to attend – please see below for ticket links. We will have downstairs table seating, as well as upper gallery seating, in a jazz club style. You are welcome to a complimentary drink upon arrival, and the evening will be supplemented by a cash bar and raffle, as in previous years.
