DIARY FOR WEEK COMMENCING 28th JUNE 2021

WEDNESDAY

On Monday Mrs Clarke and her four helpers gave a brilliant assembly for the start of Diversity and Inclusion week. They explained what diversity and inclusion mean for children at St Peter’s 2-8 and in particular to themselves. ‘Be proud to be you’ was Olivia M’s message to us all, as you can see in her picture above. We celebrated Diversity and Inclusion Week by wearing home clothes today and collecting donations for the charity Just Like Us. On Tuesday we hosted our Induction Day. I hope your children enjoyed spending time in their new class with their new teachers and teaching assistants. It was lovely to

welcome all of the new children and new parents into school and I hope you all enjoy the welcome presentations that are being sent this afternoon. Next week we are looking forward to Sports Day on Tuesday (Reception and Year 1 9am to 10.30am and Years 2 and 3 from 1.30pm to 3pm.) For those of you not attending, this event will be live streamed on Planet eStream and the log in details can be found in the covering note for the newsletter. On Wednesday the Conkers will host their PE Showcase from 9am to 9.40am. We are relieved to have made the decision to postpone Beach Day after today’s weather, and are very much looking forward to Thursday, when the children can come to school in home clothes ready for some seaside fun (on the sports pitch!)

TUESDAY

2 can swim, which in itself is an amazing achievement. The level of competition was great to observe– all in the best spirit, too. Well done to all the swimmers who tried so hard for their house. The Year Two gala was won by Micklegate and I must make a special mention to Olivia in Year Two who smashed the year Two 25 metre front crawl record by five seconds, with a time of 20.35 seconds. Astonishing! The Year Three gala was won by Monk; all the points will be added together from both galas and the swimming trophy will be awarded at our final assembly.

MONDAY

What an amazing week we have had at St Peter’s 2-8. On Monday Reception and Nursery had the opportunity to participate in a musical workshop with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The children were taken on a journey by Cherry and Cecilia, two musicians form the orchestra. The workshop was sensational and all of the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience; it was brilliant to observe the children participating with Cherry and Cecilia. At the end of day, they said how impressed they were with the standard of musicality of our children. Thank you to the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for visiting us from London and to Mrs Hayden for organising the day. Next week Year 1 children are participating in a Gamelan Workshop. Gamelan is the indigenous orchestra type of the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia and the players who are attending school are based at York University. On Monday we have Billy Hickling visiting school to lead a workshop with Year Two and Year Three children. Billy was a founder member of the West End musical ‘Stomp’ and is now known as Trash Bang’ and has visited the school many times. It is going to be great fun for the children. This week we hosted our swimming galas. This year we held the Year Two swimming gala in the morning and the Year Three gala in the afternoon. The standard of swimming displayed was absolutely fabulous. All of our children in Year

Notice Board Our Reception and Nursery children had a special visit this week from Cherry and Cecelia who are members of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Cherry brought with her some recorders and an oboe and Cecelia played the double bass. They took the children on a magical journey exploring different songs using music from the Baroque and Classical periods of music. The children

enjoyed conducting Cherry to the pasta song from Italy and had to keep up with a runaway train! I was so impressed by the children’s listening skills and Cecelia was amazed at the number of children who correctly identified her instrument! Year 2 and 3 are looking forward to their workshop with Billy Hickling The Trash Bang Man on Monday and Year 1 are super excited about their Gamelan workshop on Wednesday. A lovely musical finish to an unusual year!

This week, everyone has been working extremely hard in their PE lessons, performing the final practices of the events for Sports Day, which is next Tuesday (29th June) and the Nursery PE Showcase next Wednesday (30th

ACORNS

It's been a week of sunshine and ice cream in the Acorns.

We used playdough and tissue paper to craft our very own ice creams. I think you will agree, they look delicious! With a handful of toppings and a sprinkle of glitter for good measure, they were ready to sell in our 'Beach shop'! Be quick though, they are so popular they are going fast!

Busy, busy, busy… we all love to be busy!

CONKERS

RECEPTION We can’t believe how grown up our little Reception are becoming! It has been a very exciting week as we have had a little taster of what moving up to Year 1 is going to be like. We have also had a chance to meet our lovely new teachers. The children had so much fun on their transition afternoon and are very excited about next year! However, we are not ready to let them go just yet! We have so much fun play and so many experiences for them over the next few weeks... This week we have been continuing to create more fabulous things to sell at our Grand Exhibition. We have been creating our own little bags for you to go shopping with and we have been making something special out of clay and beautiful scented herbs… we know you will be so impressed by all the wonderful things we have created! On Tuesday morning we had the fabulous opportunity to experience some new instruments and listen to the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment! They took us on a journey with their music and the children had to create movements they felt matched the

songs.

Our human body area has been very popular this week! It has been so exciting being able to use augmented reality to look inside each other’s bodies with our very magical T-shirts! We have looked at our hearts, tracked our heart beats, looked inside our blood vessels and even inside our intestines! We have loved taking apart our human body model to look more closely at parts of the body like the brain and the lungs. Our new football blow pitch has also been very popular. We have shown such lovely sportsmanship and have been recording our scores on the board… there have been a lot of goals scored between Chelsea and Manchester City! On top of all this we have also been playing zombie chase games, finding frogs in our pond, continuing our chocolate factory creations, designing more fairy houses and creating more yummy ice creams out of scented playdough. We have been busy, busy, busy in our play! In the Forest this week we have been creating woodland weddings. A specially selected group also got the chance to go in search of some fresh elderflowers to make something very refreshing for our Grand Exhibition.

RECEPTION

This week most of the content for our newsletter must remain top secret as we have been busy preparing lots of surprises for you to see at the Grand Exhibition! We will give you some clues though as we have been in the kitchen preparing some edible treats with a flavour of Asia. Yum! We have also been beavering away on our story books about orangutans and elephants and are in the process of publishing and binding them for you to read very soon. On Tuesday we went upstairs to meet our new Year 2 teachers and had a fabulous time creating selfportraits using water colours. We were very proud of how the children behaved in their new classrooms, and though we will be sad to see them go, it fills us with pride to see how they have developed this year.

YEAR 1

YEAR 1

Year 2 have been extremely busy bees despite the summer holidays being just around the corner! We kicked off the week with some team building challenges down at Forest School where the children had to work collaboratively to build a shelter that would resist the rain (aka Mrs Franey's bucket of water!). We were so impressed with the children's teamwork, collaboration and problem-solving skills, although we did have a couple of wet children at the end of the session! Despite the weather, all of Year 2 had a wonderful time at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Friday. We were lucky enough to see some incredible animals and all of the children took part in an interesting workshop where we were able to handle animal skulls, feathers and fur! We learnt some fascinating facts too - did you know that an anteater eats up to 30,000 ants in a

single day? We have been using the maps we followed around the Park to explore coordinates in maths this week. The children did a great job at locating animals on the map by carefully reading the coordinates and also recreated their own versions by labelling the coordinates. Of course, we had to finish off the week with a game of Battleships! In art, the children have been transferring their beautiful African prints on to t-shirts using a special type of paper and iron - they look absolutely fantastic and we can't wait for you to see them soon at our upcoming exhibition. We are so proud of the children's resilience and enthusiasm with the moving up afternoon that took place this week - well done to all of the Year 2 children! Enjoy a lovely weekend and we will see you on Monday for another jam-packed week!

YEAR 2

What an incredibly busy week we have had in Year Three! As well as continuing our learning journey through Africa, we have had a very exciting time doing other wonderful things. On Tuesday the children merrily skipped to 8-13 for lunch and met their teachers for next year. They had a lovely time making new friends and mixing with the others in their new classes. When they returned to school, they were desperate to tell us about their afternoon and had enormous smiles on their faces which was lovely to see! Thursday was the return of the hotly anticipated

YEAR 3

swimming gala. Everyone had a great time competing for their houses and cheering their friends on. It was great to see such confident swimmers and we were blown away with their performances! We are travelling through Ethiopia at present and our main character Tom is on the final stretch to reach his destination. This has made us think about our approach the end of the year and we have been reflecting on our fantastic time in Year Three! We are making the most of every opportunity together in the classroom and can’t wait for another fun week with Sports Day and African drumming on the horizon!
