In 2019 I went travelling to Indonesia and was fortunate to visit an incredible project for children on the island of Lombok. The project was set up and run by an Australian charity called Classroom of Hope. Home - Classroom of Hope The charity uses locally sourced recycled materials to build earthquake proof, sustainable schools and toilets that provide quality environments where children can learn and thrive, and they serve as community hubs. I was able to spend some time teaching English to a class of 50 children aged 6-11 which was an absolute delight. The children were so keen to learn as much as they could and didn’t need lots of resources or teaching materials to do so. It’s often at this time of year in these last fraught few weeks of term that I remind myself of why I chose to become a teacher and why being able to play a small part in a child’s formative years is an absolute privilege. Schools are about children and teachers and the relationships and care that create safe and nurturing environments where children can learn and thrive academically and socially.

Today, just as I sat down to write the Newsletter, I heard a familiar voice outside. It was a pupil who started at 2-8 in Nursery and left in Year 1 when her family moved overseas. There had been many significant challenges and obstacles for this pupil, and we had worked with her family to support her in making the best possible progress. To have a surprise visit this morning and hear that they still talk about 2-8 and the care and support they received during her time with us speaks to the very purpose of being a teacher

and the very reason for why we do what we do. As you can imagine it was very emotional and something I won’t forget for a long time.

The children have had a wonderful week enjoying so many activities. On Tuesday they had so much fun spending time together outside playing cricket, bouncing on inflatables and enjoying a barbecue. Thank you to the catering team and all of the staff who organised the day. On Wednesday Reception had a fabulous day out to Filey complete with paddling and ice cream. Many thanks to the Reception team and the parent helpers. Some of our L6 drama pupils put on a Greek Gods and Goddesses Day which Year 1 were enthralled by and Year 3 held Olympic fabulous finish events to round our fantastic Olympic theme. We rounded the week off with the Nursery PE Showcase where the children participated brilliantly with beaming smiles. Thank you to our amazing PE teacher Miss Flockhart who ensures PE is inclusive and always fun! Thank you also to Miss Ball for helping to run such a lovely event. I also need to thank the Acorns, Mrs Walters, Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Rawkins and Mrs Mustatea for inviting me to buy one of their homegrown lettuces that they have lovingly grown in their new allotment area.

This week has been about our children and next week will be too as we prepare for our End of Year Review and Celebration and the Nursery Graduation. Thank you for your support and patience at this very busy time of year.

With best wishes,

Instrumental Lessons in School for the Autumn Term

As we head to the end of term, I will be starting to talk to the children in Reception to Year 2 about the different instruments available to learn from September. If your child is already learning an instrument in school and you would like them to continue, you do not need to do anything.

If your child is currently in Year 1 and has been learning the recorder, please note their lesson will become a 30min lesson from September unless you wish to give notice.

In Year 2 we usually recommend only having lessons on one musical instrument. In Year 3, we can discuss pupils having lessons on two instruments where appropriate.

If you would like to give notice on music lessons, please do so by emailing a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk.

If you would like to sign your child up to learn a new instrument, please fill in the following form St Peter's 2-8: Request for Music Lessons (office.com).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Mrs Hayden.

Individual Music lessons are offered for the following instruments:

Year 1 - recorders, taught in pairs. Please note you do not need to sort out a pair of children to sign your child up, our recorder teacher will sort the pairings out in September. The cost for Year 1 lessons are £12.75 per lesson.

Year 2 and 3 lessons are all taught as individual lessons on the following instruments:

• Year 2 - Recorder, piano, violin, drums, cello and guitar

Year 3 - Recorder, piano, violin, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, pocket cornet (smaller version of a cornet/trumpet, once the child has grown enough, they can transfer onto a full sized instrument easily) or pbone (lighter version of a trombone - students once grown enough can easily transfer onto a trombone from this instrument) and drums.

The fees for 2024/25 lessons in Year 2 and 3 are:

£25.50 per 30-minute lesson. Hire charge of £37 per term where appropriate. Please note we do not hire recorders, guitars or pianos.

For Current Year 3’s who are wishing to continue music lessons, please sign up again via the 8-13 Welcome Pack.

What adventure awaits Ditchy when he sets out into the forest on his own?

Ditchy, the baby forest elephant, goes on an adventure in the tropical rainforest. He’s excited to explore, but soon finds he has some difficult choices to make along the way.

This is a positive and encouraging story for any child (or adult!) who is struggling with separation and individuation.

From the Author:

“I have loved coming into RA, Acorns and Playgroup to read to the children, they have all been fabulous listeners and asked some really engaging questions”.

On September 15th, the Medical Team will be taking part in the Northumberland Coast Mighty Hike half marathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Sian Mortimer, our school nurse, shares her thoughts on the upcoming fundraiser:

"As many of you may already know, our own Angie has recently battled breast cancer. Angie is the heart of our department, and has shown such positivity and resilience in her journey. Macmillan has been a real support to her during this time, and we wanted to help give back by raising money for this worthy charity."
