symbol all over the school. Thank Mrs Bateson for organising the day. Next weekend would normally be having our Open Day for prospective children and families. This year we are hosting a Virtual Open Morning. You can register here. You can also see a number of films (and here, and here) that were recently created providing a small glimpse into the life of St Peter’s 2-8. The one area we can’t replicate on a virtual tour is the magical, vibrant atmosphere the school has as you walk around the stunning classrooms and learning spaces. To that end we On Monday each of our classes from Year 1 to Year 3 joined thousands of schools who are putting their hands up to end bullying by watching the Big Anti Bullying Assembly. There was a special film created that was supported by the Diana Award and Nationwide Building Society that aimed to help tackle this big issue. It featured inspiration from big names so together we can work towards a school and a society built on mutual respect for all. The Big Anti-Bullying Assembly 2020 has resources for parents and children by following this link and joining in the conversation on social are inviting families to visit in person in the media with #Antibullyingtogether. Together we evenings and at weekends and in line with Covid19 guidelines to meet me and have a tour of the school. We are pleased to announce that we will be running a holiday club from 19th to 23rd October; please read further information here. We are continuing the informal assessments for the time being and therefore we have moved the Parents’ Evenings to the first week back after half term in order for us to provide a more complete picture after a prolonged absence from school. We will send out details for how to book a Zoom slot next week. It has been an incredibly busy week at STP 2-8. Observing the children enjoying their learning is such a joy. The Nursery children have been celebrating the mid-Autumn festival of the moon by creating amazing art and baking moon biscuits

will work to put an end to bullying, celebrate diversity and create a community at STP 2-8 of kindness for all for children, staff and parents! Today is World Smile Day. Sometimes all it takes to make the day better is a smile, whether it’s one someone gives to you, or one you share with another. Little acts of kindness can bring a shining smile to someone who has otherwise had a terrible day and it can change everything that follows. Whether it’s just a simple compliment or a cheery hello, a smile helps to brighten the day and World Smile Day encourages you to take action to bring a few more smiles into the world. It is lovely welcoming children and parents on a morning in all weathers as everyone has a smile at St. Peter’s (2-8) as they arrive that brightens the start of everyone’s day. Throughout the day we have been talking about World Smile Day and the importance of smiling and small acts of kindness. There are copies of Harvey Ball’s iconic ‘Smiley’

and watching their feathery friends grow and have a wander around Nursery. Great fun! The Reception children have harvested apples from Mr and Mrs Walker’s Orchard using fabulous collaborative skills to reach the apples and then to create delicious stewed apple treats in the cookery room. Year 1 have realized that Maths can be found anywhere, they found so many natural resources to sort and make repeating patterns and multiples of numbers. When in 1C I was very impressed with a homemade book about zoos created by Izzy; the children, teachers and I were captivated by Izzy’s knowledge and passion for animals. Year 2 have been receiving mystery messages from the Firebird and even another letter and a book for the children to read. There has been a tremendous amount of work based on Australia, bush fires and investigations of what fire needs to burn. Year 3 have been continuing their work on Resilient Romans where Corvus had left school to go on a mystery adventure. The children set out on a rescue mission to get him back. Read on in the newsletter to see if they were successful! I do hope you have a wonderful weekend, I look forward to seeing the Reception children swimming tomorrow and the rest of the school on Monday with smiles! Best wishes,

This week we have focused on block tackles in hockey and applying this skill in 2v2 mini matches. We also learnt about competition and how we should act in both victory and defeat, which the children took in their stride. In Core PE, Year 3 have

PE

been focussing on balance this week. Challenging each other to hold different balances for ten seconds by concentrating on a particularly point in front of them.

This week in the Acorns we’ve seen our new feathery friends growing up and we starred the week by letting them out to say hello and have a good stretch!

Acorns

On Wednesday morning it was our turn to stretch our legs as we ventured out into the rain with the Conkers. We put our wellies and waterproofs on and had a walk all the way to the boat house. We found fallen leaves, conkers and apples… which were delicious! Before heading back we even managed to fit in a drink and biscuit!

Look at all the Autumn fun we are having in Conkers at the moment! We have even celebrated the mid-Autumn festival of the moon by baking our own moon biscuits!

READY, STEADY….COOK! The Reception children have transformed themselves into chefs this week and have been incredibly busy in the kitchen! As a part of our pop-up adventure this week, the children began to explore the big St Peter’s campus! We began to discover what the different buildings were called and saw where all the big boys and girls do all of their learning too! Whilst on our adventure, we discovered the most incredible orchard behind a curious, old gate in the wall– St Catherine’s Orchard in the Headmaster’s garden! The orchard was full of beautiful apple trees that got the children thinking about what we could do with all of those apples! Lots of discussion was had and wonderful ideas shared. We decided we could: Make apple pie or crumble Cover them in chocolate to eat them! Draw and colour over them! Roll and catch them! Eat them straight away! (which led to lots of talk about the importance of washing them!) After a big vote, we decided to create an apple stew! We then

RECEPTION

had to decide how many apples were needed for this. We came to the conclusion that if every member of reception picked just 1 apple each… we should all have enough! With this mission set, the children went off to search for the biggest, best, shiniest apple they could find! They looked high and low and even had to jump to reach some! Once we had enough apples, the children went to the dining room where we learnt how to carefully use peelers and knives to peel and chop up the apples – ready to go into the pan! Lots of concentration was needed here. The children were all so safe and careful as they took turns fairly to get the apples ready. Once the apples had been peeled and chopped, they were ready to go into the oven! The smell of the apples cooking was DELICIOUS! Once the apples were ready to eat, the children had great fun in deciding what to put on top them! Whipped cream, cinnamon, hundreds and thousands, sugar!? What a tasty little treat as a reward for all our hard work! Well done Team Reception!

Wow, what another busy and fun week we have had in Year 1! We made the most of the sunshine early in the week and went outside to consolidate our knowledge of sorting, comparing and ordering numbers to 10 and beyond. We used lots of natural materials such as conkers, acorns and our favourite maths resource; the humble stick.

2H

2H have continued reading the wonderful story of The Firebird. We have realised that the story has been retold many times, often with little differences. All the stories have a brave prince called Prince Ivan, however, and this week we read about the wonderfully named Koshkey the Deathless! After reading about how Koshkey turned all his enemies to stone, we did some drama outside. We imagined that we had been frozen in stone whilst trying to fight Koshkey and then freeze framed our movement, like statues. On Tuesday the Firebird delivered another letter and a book for us to read. The story is called Wombat goes Walkabout and, as the Firebird said it would, it told us all about fire. From reading this lovely story, we have been learning about Australia (Thomas is our in-class expert!) and the animals that live there. In art we used our collage box, full of twinkly things and our cutting skills to make and decorate fiery borders. Mrs Franey and I were so impressed with 2H’s improved cutting skills and this has transferred into our neat, Year 2 handwriting. On Monday we watched the Big Anti Bullying Assembly and pledged to put our hands up to stop all unkindness. Well done 2H for all your hard work- have a lovely, restful weekend…!

An exciting start to the week this week with another gift from the Firebird! This time we received a new book called Wombat goes Walkabout and a letter asking us to find out more about fire! We read the story together and quickly realised that the story was set in Australia and a bush fire took over one of the forests. Luckily, Wombat had made a burrow that he and his friends could be safe in. We began researching Australia; looking at where it is on the world map and using iPads to find out some interesting facts which we recorded with a partner. Mrs Moss and I were pleased to see lots of collaborative twins in 2J in this lesson! In science, we investigated what fire needs in order to burn and how it can be extinguished. We watched clips and used candles to explore this. We also made fire art using soft pastels - messy but lots of fun!

In maths we have been using number lines to help us with our addition. We began using smaller numbers and eventually moved on to drawing our own numbers lines using larger numbers. We consolidated that addition can be done in any order and therefore it

is easier to start with the bigger number so you don't have to do as many hops on your number line! An exciting and investigative week, well done 2J! Keep up the hard work!

2J

written an account of our adventure and made ‘missing’ posters to put up on display. We still haven’t heard back from him so please can you all keep a look out over the weekend – we are missing him terribly. Thank you!

In other news, we have been learning about the great Julius Caesar and modelled our own Caesar coins out of clay. In Maths we have been rounding numbers to With that, Year Three set out on a rescue mission to the nearest get him back! We headed straight to the Story Den ten, in Museum Gardens and had a biscuit, which we hundred, thought might entice him back. Unfortunately, we thousand were unsuccessful. We then decided to build him and beyond some nests in the hope that he would come back for which has a rest. We worked collaboratively and used the been resources in the woodland to help us recreate a cosy challenging home for him. Some had hot tubs whilst others but great were filled with delicious, wiggly worms in case he fun! was peckish. We left our nests there and have since

YEAR 3

On Tuesday we arrived at school to find that Corvus had left to go on an adventure! We were sent lots of pictures of him in different places and managed to work out from the background of the pictures that he had gone to the Museum Gardens, before heading to visit emperor Constantine at the Minster and even finding time to stop at Betty’s for a biscuit! There was, however, one small problem… he was lost and couldn’t find his way home!
