We are coming to the end of anti-bullying week when we have been supporting the work of the Anti-bullying Alliance across the school. Each class has been taught that as a school we stand ‘United Against Bullying’, which is this year’s theme. Mrs Bateson has pulled together resources for each year group to share and it has been taught during PSHE lessons too. On Monday the school community wore odd socks and shoes. Most importantly, Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun– it was an opportunity to encourage children and staff to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique! More information and resources for parents can be found here: https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/toolsinformation/advice-parents.

Christmas is most definitely coming at 2-8 and the school has been filled with the sound of children singing Christmas tunes this week, orchestrated by our musical maestro Mrs Hayden. I feel it is so important that the children have the opportunity to feel the magic and wonder of Christmas at school. The Christmas play rehearsals are in full swing at the moment and this year the Rayson Room will be transformed into a film studio. The Christmas plays will be streamed live to your homes and workplaces via Zoom and other platforms. They will also be recorded. My thanks to the ICT team at school for setting up the technology for these events. This year we will be joining the Whole School Community to record a Carol Service for us all to enjoy. Both the Year 2 and the Year 3 choirs are looking forward to being part of this unique event. This will be recorded and shared to the Whole School Community on the final day of term on the school website– more details of how to watch to follow.

festive cookies to ice. The children will take part within their year group bubbles. Mrs Bateson has organised activities for each year group to enjoy. Children can wear Christmas jumpers and home clothes/outfits on this day. Mr Robinson, our school catering manager, has organised for our Christmas lunch on this day too – I can’t wait!

On Friday 11th December we will have our end of term assembly for the children and Mrs Hayden will orchestrate our legendary Twelve Days of Christmas singalong. Please note that the end of term is 12 noon on Friday!

This is end of week nine of the Autumn Term and what a different start to the year it has been. As a school community we have come so far and adapted brilliantly to the new, albeit temporary, normal. Drop off at school is now incredibly efficient and I can’t thank you enough for all your support and understanding by dropping your child at the designated areas, keeping socially distanced from one another and leaving the site at your earliest opportunity, allowing other parents to park and drop off their children. In my letter yesterday I wrote to explain that we are continuously reviewing our practices to ensure that we can stay open to as many pupils as possible and minimise the spread of Covid-19. Following recent cases across the school (2-18) and in light of the current lockdown regulations I asked that you leave the school premises as soon as you have collected your child at pick up. I really do appreciate all you are doing to remain socially distanced and leave promptly at drop off. We do understand that children may wish to play with their friends after school, something which we have always been happy to see in the past. Unfortunately, we have to ask you to forgo this to protect the sustainability of what we are offering in school.

Mrs Bateson

One of the huge strengths of the school is the incredible informal parent support networks that are created and I understand this has been difficult to achieve at a time when we need it most. On Thursday next week I am going to lead a Parent Forum for all parents across the school. After a short introduction, there will be an opportunity to ask me any questions regarding school. For the last half an hour there will be a breakout room for each year group (Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3) where a parent from that particular Year group will host a social get together. This On Thursday 10th December we will be having will provide parents a chance to meet other parents in the same year group, to ask a Christmas Activity Day. There will be questions and share one another’s contact Christmas crafts to make, games to play and details if you wish. Zoom details will be shared

by email on Tuesday in the weekly reminder. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Thursday. Huge thanks to the Clifton Friends who this week have organised Bags 2 School and been on hand every morning to receive your full bags. All proceeds will go to our school charity, which will be announced next week. Due to the success of the Half Term holiday week in October we will be running a Christmas Holiday Club from Monday 14th to Friday 18th in the first week of the holidays. Once again this will be led by Miss Flockhart and be staffed by teachers and teaching assistants from across the school. Mrs LeeBursnall will be organising the bookings and there is a booking sheet at the end of this newsletter. Just a reminder there is no Reception swimming tomorrow and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes,

MUSIC Musical notes – both of our choirs have been working so hard this half term, preparing to take part in our Whole School Carol Service 2-18. Whilst we will miss our usual Christingle this year, I am really excited that our children will have the opportunity join the rest of our school in this special service. We will be recording our Carols in the chapel, complete with Christingles and bell ringers! Christmas jumpers – please can I remind all choir members in Year 3 and all Year 2 children that we will be recording our pieces for the Musical Connections Virtual Christmas Concert on Tuesday 24th November. If possible, please can the children bring their Christmas jumper to school on that day, or something cheery to wear with their uniform, tinsel, colourful hat/scarf etc? We are looking forward to spreading a bit of musical Christmas joy with local people who live in care homes in our community. Many thanks, Mrs Hayden.

PE

Acorns and Conkers have been working extremely hard in their PE lessons this week! Acorns have been continuing to work on their knowledge of different shapes and balances and have demonstrated their skills during the Bean Game. They have also started to develop their rolling skills, first rolling their ball in a circle to different members of the group, then progressing this further and using their rolling skills as part of a Superhero Game. The children have developed using different size balls to help reinforce the skill of rolling. Excellent work Acorns! Conkers have been exploring different ways they are able to move a scarf around the space. The children showed excellent creativity in moving their scarf at different

heights and speeds. The children have also been developing their throwing and catching skills using the scarves and beanbags. First, they practiced scrunching up the scarfs into a ball, before throwing it in the air and catching it. Afterwards, they progressed the skill, attempting to throw and catch a beanbag which they had wrapped in a scarf. All the Conkers demonstrated excellent determination to catch their beanbag and were able to make adjustments to the height of their throw in order to succeed at the task. Finally, the children have advanced the skill further, challenging themselves to throw and catch not only beanbags but different size balls. The children showed great determination when we removed the aid of a scarf, which was really encouraging to see. Well done Conkers!

Acorns

Just look how busy we have been in Acorns this this week! It's been full of fun indoors and out; exploring, investigating and playing!

Conkers

This week has been full of lights and beautiful colours as we celebrate the festival of Diwali! We have really enjoyed listening to the story of Rama and Sita, and exploring the different traditions! Look at how amazing we have been having a go at creating our very own clay Diva lamps, Rangoli patterns on the floor, and Mendhi hand art!

Our week started off really colourfully, with lots of bright, odd socks worn for Anti-Bullying week. In Reception, we have been talking lots about being kind and how we can be kind to each other and some of the children’s examples include using kind words, using kind hands and being a good friend. The children have

been following a secret mission all week to try and be as kind to their friends as possible and if they do this, they get a special sparkly rainbow star sticker! We have done amazingly well! For Forest School this week we turned ourselves into super secret spies on a mission to find the number 6 represented in different ways. We learnt how to use a new app called PicCollage and we used this to take photos and create posters of all the different number 6s we found. We had to be careful in our mission to not get tricked by all the other numbers that were lurking around the Forest so we used our super spy glasses to help us to only see the number 6! We have also begun to record our special, secret Christmas surprise for all the grownups at home; we can’t wait for you to see it!

RECEPTION

Superheroes Unite! This week we have transformed into Superheroes with our very own Superhero Headquarters. The children have been busy following maps to find where the baddies are hiding. They even found footprints in the sand that they used magnifying glasses to follow. We have had lots of traps created to capture the baddies as well as lookout towers to protect the whole entire school! They have also been using the new Superhero ‘Power Up’ areas to get Gorilla Power, Cheetah Speed and Gecko Grip Power and have splatted the numbers that they want to power up by!

YEAR 1

Wow what a busy and fun filled week we have had! As ever, we had a great time in Forest Schools building and developing our fine and gross motor skills. This week we learned how to safely use knives to whittle wood and it was fantastic to see such wonderful listening and attention skills in this task. In English we have been really busy writing our endangered animal fact files; we have been learning skills to improve our sentence and word construction, including saying our sentence out loud before we write it and clapping the syllables in words to help us hear all the sounds. We have been maths superstars this

week and we have been using our reasoning skills to explain our ideas and theories. Some of us have been investigating number sentences and seeing if addition can be done in any order. We have also been using part whole models to subtract from the whole. The children are really challenging themselves in the provision areas and it is wonderful to watch their skills grow and develop. We have been making bridges in construction, painting aboriginal art, sketching Indian elephants and creating different habitats in small world. This week we have been practising some special songs that we can’t wait for you to hear- Christmas is coming!

2H made the most of the fine weather and went to Forest School on Monday. Mrs Franey had been gardening at home and had cut lots of willow down in her garden with Mr Franey. We twisted the willow around and used knotting skills to make early Christmas decorations, using our resilience and team work when it was difficult! We have started to think about our Year 2 Christmas production, which is, of course, based on the Nutcracker story. In music Mrs

Hayden has been working hard with us, learning the music to play and practising Christmas carols. The Year 2 team are all already singing Away in a Manger in their heads! In art we have been getting our puppets ready for Puppet Pals on the ipads next week and our written Nutcracker stories are fantastic- Mrs Hall and Mrs Franey are so proud of our progress in story writing!

Christmas is coming! This week we have begun rehearsals for our (virtual!) Christmas play... The Nutcracker! The children have been practising their lines with expression and projected voices. We are so excited to share this with you in a few weeks time!

It has been another exciting week in Year Three! As we creep closer to Christmas, we have picked up pace with our Lights, Camel, Action rehearsals and have been working on our expressive acting and reading our lines without scripts!

Friends of St Peter's 2-8 For obvious reasons, FoSP 2-8 are unable to fundraise in our usual ways this year. Our calendar would usually be filled with various Pop-Up Cafés, Parent Socials and Quizzes, all held to support the school in raising money for their chosen charity, as well as to raise funds to provide complementary activities for the children to enjoy. As a committee, we have decided that our priority must be to support the school charity with any fundraising we are able to achieve, and as such are postponing raising any money for additional resources for the children at this time. Our hope is to pick this back up towards the end of the school year, guidelines and vaccines permitting!

19th November 2020 Dear Friends, We hope this message finds you all safe and well. Unfortunately, due to the current circumstances we are unable to put on the 44th StPSCCSC dinner dance at the end of term. This is the first time in 43 years, like with so many other important events that have been cancelled this year. Despite the pandemic and with the unrelenting passion of Gareth Sharp, we have been active and able to continue with some of our work during 2020. Gareth and the sports department tried their best to give some sort of traction to the cricket season for the boys during September & October, with 10 scheduled competitive fixtures, alongside individual and ‘year group bubble’ coaching sessions. We hope to back as strong as ever in 2021 with plenty of cricket related events to support, and some exciting games of schoolboy and schoolgirl cricket to watch and enjoy. The committee this year has gifted the school with The Tim Wood Award, an award in memory of our late friend and committee member Tim. The award is presented by Gareth Sharp for outstanding achievement in Integrity, Character, Endeavour. The inaugural recipient is Chris Wood, a fitting achievement for Tim’s son. It is unfortunate that Chris and the rest of the cricketers didn’t manage to enjoy the season as usual; but here’s to next season all being well. We also lost one of the school’s cricket greats this year with the passing of Dan Woods and have pledged a donation to the new Dan Woods Pavilion at York Cricket Club. This will serve junior cricket a passion close to Dan’s heart. For those who did not know Dan, he started cricket coaching at St Peter’s in the summer of 2010, and remained at the school as assistant coach of the 1st XI with Gareth from 2011-2013 were they took the 1st XI to the last 8 in the National T20 for the first time in 2013; he completed his PGCE at St Olave’s where he taught PE, Games, and English, before working at Clifton Prep as a teaching assistant. Dan also spent time in Australia traveling and playing Grade cricket. Dan joined Cundall Manor as a class teacher and Games coach, before returning to St Peter’s 3-18 in 2019 to focus on his passion for sport and love of cricket coaching. Dan’s records and achievements as a York Cricketer Club member are unparalleled, as player, captain and legend of the club. Dan played for (*denotes captained) - Leeds/Bradford MCCU, Hyde Cricket Club*, York Cricket Club*, Lancashire Academy, Lancashire 2nd XI, The Unicorns, MCC, Cheshire CCC*, and trialled at Northants in 2011 before committing fully and fervently to teaching and coaching. Dan’s energy, positivity and endlessly optimistic outlook on life, combined with his luminous disposition was infectious and influenced every person he came into contact with for the better. He was a friend to so many people up and down the country – he was a role model, a people person, a relationship builder, and an influencer; we feel very fortunate to be able to call him one of our own, and one of our very dear friends. Thank you for your support over the years and we look forward to welcoming you back next year. A very good friend had always said to me “seize the day”, what amazing advice.

Carpe diem my friends. We wish you a peaceful festive season and hope for a happy new year. Best wishes Gary Nixon Chairman StPSCCSC
