programmed supercomputers, helped develop space tourist training programmes and won the BBC’s search for a future astronaut. Suzie covered everything from satellites to teamwork, the future of science to dealing with risk. Suzie’s story was such an inspiration to us all. It was brilliant to celebrate all she has achieved on International Women’s week a time when the world celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. I just wanted to highlight, celebrate, and recognise all the inspirational women in our school community including the staff, parents, and carers – thank you for all you do for the children.

The school council led the assembly on Monday morning, showing a film they have created on the topic of the environment. They showed an amazing short film ‘Wonderful World’ from the BBC, narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Each member of the school council then explained how each one of us can play our part to help in this mission. The School Council explained how and where we can recycle most items that often end up in the waste bins. The School Council then showed a film they created on the topic of the environment and how we can all help. Huge thanks to Mrs Franey for organising the School Council.

MUSICAL NOTES This week we were visited by the Brass Group from St Peter’s 13-18. The children really enjoyed hearing them play and found out some fascinating facts about the brass family of instruments!
On Thursday morning Year 3 took part in their Inter-House Netball Competition. This was a fantastic opportunity to work with other members in their House who they may have not played with before, to build on communication and teamwork skills. It was heart-warming to see all the children being kind to one another, encouraging each other when cheering on their House throughout the competition. I am over the moon with all of the Year 3 children with how much resilience they have displayed throughout their netball lessons. As a Year group the children completed Zoom PE lessons working on their netball skills last year during lockdown and I have been really impressed with how well they have adopted the skills and flourished in confidence during mini matches this year. I was amazed with how quickly the children have picked up the complex skills of netball, grasping not to run with the ball but knowing they can pivot around to see where their teammates are stood and the tactics behind the game in order to get in front of their opposition, by constantly moving into space.
Outstanding work Year 3, myself and Miss Hopper are very proud of what you have accomplished within netball this year! Thank you to all Year 3 staff and sport graduates who supported with the InterHouse Netball Competition!

ACORNS Spring is in the air, and we have had a beautiful week in Acorns. Following on from World Book Day last week, the Acorns have loved the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This led us into finding out all about the life cycle of a butterfly. I am sure the Acorns would be able to tell you what happens at each stage of the cycle! Our water play this week involved yellow coloured water filled with fresh cucumber and orange slices. We have threaded Cheerios onto pipe cleaners to make caterpillars and we have used stamp paint to fill in caterpillars' tummies. The children’s fingers are getting stronger by the day as they squeezed oranges to make delicious homemade orange juice. While the sun was shining brightly, we took the opportunity to wander into York to see the beautiful spring flowers that are blooming in the Minster Gardens. The crocuses were like sparking jewels in the sunlight. We happened to come across a friendly goose walking up from the river! Our ‘ winter’ tree has been decorated with handcrafted flowers made by the children. Spring has really sprung in Nursery! We enjoyed cutting up some delicious fruit to make a fruit salad that the hungry caterpillar would have approved of! The children were brilliant. We have so enjoyed the week. Next week will see the introduction of some fluffy little friends. Watch this space for the ‘cute’ factor!
CONKERS ‘I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your
house down....’ After seeing all the adults in the Conkers dressed up for World Book Day as the characters from ‘The Three Little Pigs’ (Miss Kelsh as the big bad wolf of course!!) This week the children were inspired to read and explore the story for themselves. Nursery has been like a mini building site all week! We have been building tall towers... building cup models… building small worlds… building shelters... building houses... and even building repeating patterns with the coloured blocks!
This week in Reception we have been looking at maps and using our class text this week ‘What the ladybird heard’ as inspiration for our mapmaking and writing. On Tuesday all of Reception went on a walk around Clifton using a route on a simple map to follow and then when back in school the children drew their own maps on the playground adding in local landmarks. Everyone remembered seeing Cakes Delicious on the way! We enjoyed looking at our school on Google maps too and spotting the swimming pool, playground and tennis courts on it. We compared the satellite image to the map and talked about what differences we could see. Also on Tuesday we celebrated International Women’s day. We read books about famous women who had triumphed over diversity and talked about what we would like to be when we are older. It was RM’s turn to go to the Railway Museum this week and they had a wonderful time trainspotting and eating their tasty train biscuits that they baked to take with them. Baking is still proving popular and we have also had cakes, volcano bread and scones made in our baking area too throughout the week! In other exciting news there has been an abundance of wildlife spotted in our outdoor playground, a duck, a frog and now frogspawn in the pond. Some of the children have enjoyed pond dipping and we learnt about water safety. It really feels like spring is around the corner!

YEAR 1 What a brilliant week we have had in Year 1. This week another land has come to visit the Magic Faraway tree...The Land of the Old Woman. We have been busy bees in provision and have been painting pop art pictures of The Queen, in the style of Andy Warhol and taking inspiration from another artist, Romero Britto. We have also been using an age yourself app on the iPad to see what we would look like when we are much, much older. The teachers have had a go too... We then used these pictures to make a Chatterpix explaining what we would like to be or do when we grow up!
On Tuesday, it was International Women's Day. In English, we have been learning about four influential women and their impact on the world! The children have been incredibly passionate and have shared some brilliant views. We are so proud of them and their wonderful writing and teamwork to make fact files about their chosen person. A super week in Year 1 and we are looking forward to another land next week! Have a brilliant weekend everyone.
YEAR 1
YEAR 2 After a very strange game of croquet, Alice was taken to visit the Mock-Turtle to hear his story! The Mock-Turtle is a fictional character based on the popular Victorian dish, turtle soup. This led our learning into discovering some very unappetising but popular dishes like mock turtle soup and jellied eels! We then made our own, much more delicious versions! This week we have started preparations for our ' Wonderland Garden Party' by creating our own Wonderland inspired bunting! The children used running stich to secure their designs and had a lot of practise threading their needles! Yesterday the children had a fantastic time at Forest School making soup and building a magical fairy garden. The children also loved taking part in a winter twig hunt! In maths, the children have been exploring 2D shapes and their properties and went on a shape hunt around school, recording their findings using the app piccollage.
YEAR 2
YEAR 3 This week we have continued our learning on Global Warming and linked this to International Women’s Day on Tuesday by focussing on the inspirational Greta Thunberg. We couldn’t believe that she was only our age (8) when she started her journey to help save our planet! Her main aim was to raise awareness of the impact that climate change is having on our world, and she initially did this by stopping speaking! She then went on to carry out school strikes and protests and more recently, has been giving rousing speeches to important officials all around the world. We loved watching her delivering her powerful messages and have been discovering more about her life. Inspired by her work, we pooled together ideas of how we can reduce our carbon footprint and made placards with our own powerful messages. In the words of Greta Thunberg, “You are never too small to make a difference.” In maths we have been busy developing our measuring skill, focussing specifically on Area! We took our learning outside on Monday and made shapes using natural materials before measuring their area and perimeter. Once we were secure in our knowledge of regular shapes, we moved on to working out areas of compound shapes and triangles. The children thoroughly
enjoyed the challenge, so much so that they didn’t want to stop! On Thursday the children took part in a house netball competition which was expertly run by Miss Flockhart and Miss Hopper. The children had a wonderful time playing in their colours and showing off their netball skills! At the end of the week, Miss Murray shared a video she made from her trip to a school in The Gambia and spoke about what the Gambian children do at school and the environment in which they live. All of the Year 3 children were very inquisitive, asked lots of questions and talked about how grateful they are for what they have in their lives here. Next week we are looking forward to celebrating STEM week in school, with the focus being ‘Growth’. The children will be tackling a number of challenges in the classroom and each day a new activity will be sent home for you try!
