veryday, our students are walking their paths to become strong, independent Veritas Men and Women. They are developing in academics, arts, athletics and beyond. St. Pius X graduates are leaders and scholars! One of our scholars and leaders is our most recently named national merit commended student, Zander Jez. Zander is an outstanding, Veritas man. His smile and compassionate nature are a beacon for all at SPX. He is a gifted young man whose intelligence and intellectual curiosity have made him a stand out in the clasroom. Zander is just one of our students who makes us better each and every day. You can learn more about Zander on page 27. Have you had a chance to catch one of our phenomenal Theatre SPX productions recently? Under the direction of Gloria Fant and technical direction of John Magalhaes, these student-led productions are delivered three times a year.
Our students not only star on the stage, but they take the lead behind the curtain, in the light and sound box and even in building the sets. These productions are amazing! The hard work that is put into each production is clearly visible. If you’d like to learn more about our theater department, please read the great article on page 29. St. Pius X High School has a long tradition of excellence on the athletic fields and courts. Whether it’s winning state titles or AllAmerican Academic titles, our young athletes always excel in their sport. We even have sibling athletes making names for themselves. Sisters Macy and Margo Matula are tearing up the soccer pitch. These two young women are competitive both on the field and in the classroom. They are wonderful young women who are both already committed to Texas A&M. Learn more about them on page 13. These are just a few examples of the stellar students who walk the halls of St. Pius X High
School every day because of generous supporters like you. St. Pius X continues to develop leaders and scholars because of your generous support. You help us to create programs to attract a diverse student body. Whether it’s our newly formed Chess Club, or our Engineer Your World program that has had 40 different students learn more about the impact engineers have on everything from structure stability to programming robots, your significant gifts help St. Pius X find the programs, both curricular and co-curricular that are the best fit for our young men and women. Whether we provide emotional support, companionship support or tangible support, there simply is no way to live a meaningful life without supporting one another. That is why your continued financial support of St. Pius X High School is so critical— we simply could not move our mission of developing leaders and scholars in the Dominican tradition forward without you. Within the pages of this magazine, you will find lists and names of every single person who made a difference at St. Pius X High School with a gift during the 2018-2019 fiscal year. These gifts collectively helped

us accomplish so much! Whether you gave to our most critical needs through the SPX Fund or to ensure the long-term health of our school through the Foundation Gala, your gift made an impact on the lives of our students. To say we are humbled and grateful for your willingness to give sacrificially to SPX is an understatement. Faculty and staff are laser focused making sure they provide those who desire a Catholic education with the opportunity to excel and flourish at the best co-educational Catholic school in Houston, and your support makes that possible. As an alumni, past parent and board member, I am so proud to witness the sense of community that has endured for 64 years. Seeing our community -students, parents, faculty, staff and friends --
attend theater productions, cheering on our athletes on the field and court, volunteering and attending liturgy reminds me what makes St. Pius X High School so special. Publishing the Roll of Donors each year is a small way in which St. Pius X High School can publicly recognize those who have made financial gifts to the School. Every year, the list of benefactors grows with new friends who join the dedicated and consistent donors who have supported St. Pius X for many years. Each of these gifts is needed and appreciated. Reunion weekend started out with the Jubilee Mass, presided by Rev. Msgr. Chester Borski and Dcn. Ed Herrera ’69. Alumni from the Jubilee Class received a Golden Panther pin from head of school Carmen Garrett Armistead in recognition of their 50th reunion. During a special portion of the Jubilee Mass, deceased classmates were remembered as a member of their family or a member of

the Class of 1969 presented a single rose at each of their memorial candles. Following Mass, guests joined Armistead for the Head of School Reception in the lobby of the White Family Center for the Sciences and Media. Alumni from the Class of 1969 along with the Classes of 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 noshed on delicious bites and enjoyed music and campus tours. Since many members of the Jubilee Class had not returned to campus since graduation 50 years ago, they enjoyed visiting parts of the school where they spent time, as well as seeing the new areas of the school.

This girls soccer season at St. Pius X was a special one for the Matula family. Sisters Macy and Margo Matula were on the same field this year playing as teammates.

MACY & MARGO
Junior Macy will be transitioning to Texas A&M during the 2021 season completing her SPX academic and graduation requirements while also starting practices for A&M. Margo will hold down the fort at SPX for three more seasons. “A bunch of people say we look and play alike,” the older Macy laughed. “I don't see it, though. She's a blonde and plays defense.” On the field, the team was much-improved with the arrival of a new coach and the decorated freshman. “We have a great relationship,” Margo said. “But we are siblings. Sometimes we are yelling at each other and part ways, but mostly we are really close and talk about everything.” While the sisters had one year of high school ball, they will reunite at Texas A&M, as both have committed to the Aggies women's soccer team. “We visited a few college campuses and fell in love with the people at Texas A&M,” Macy said. “The coaches have great relationships with their players, and the support staff is amazing. It's a big family. My parents, who went to the University of Texas, helped me a lot with my college decision.”
The pair committed in 2018 after Macy's freshman year. Margo was entering the eighth grade. Macy led the way to the pitch. “We played everything from basketball, flag football to volleyball,” Macy said. “We did gymnastics and ballet. I was just better at soccer and I started to like it more, of course. I was a lefty, which is sort of rare and coaches needed that position. I'm also not that coordinated with my hands, so soccer works for me. “From there, Margo just followed me,” she said. “We played for the YMCA and then club,” Margo added. “We then started playing with the Albion Hurricanes. It was all about fun. If I didn't like my coaches or teammates when I started, I wouldn't be in the sport. If it wasn't fun, I would have had to quit.” With their college decisions out of the way, the Matulas turned their focus toward getting girls soccer back on the map at SPX. “I love it here,” Macy said. “I'm not really super-outgoing. I love being at a place where I know everyone and build close friendships. That's what it's all about, right? “It's also a place where teachers and the administration are genuinely pulling for you.” 2018/2019 ANNUALREPORT

MARCHING BAND TAKES HONORS
The 2019 TAPPS State Drumline/Marching Band Contest was held at Waco ISD Athletic Complex on Ocotber 28, 2019. The SPX Drumline competed in the large school classification Tier 1 and 2019 FALL PIUS NEWS
received three superior ratings from the judges. The SPX Marching Band received one superior rating and two excellent ratings from the judges.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL Students from the Class of 2018 picked up their yearbooks over the summer and were welcomed with an ice cream social to beat the heat. CROSS COUNTRY RECAP
SPX men’s cross country finished third in TAPPS 6A District 4, led by Rushil Desai’s ninth place finish. Sub-varsity boys showed just as much grit throughout the season, building up to top-15 finishes in district by Gabe Green and William Bollom. Makenna Capitaine spearheaded efforts for varsity girls, showing great promise for her senior year. The Panthers started the season at Incarnate
Word Academy’s annual invitational, placing sixth in a field of 14 teams, with Desai’s top-25 finish leading the charge. The momentum would continue throughout the six-meet regular season with the likes of Desai, Zander Jez, Hunter Farris and Kaid Nygren setting the pace for success.
After besting St. John XXIII College Prep, Monisgnor Kelly and Concordia Lutheran in the district meet, eight varsity men advanced to state, finishing ninth out of 19 teams. Adam Abuain and Rushil Desai finished top 35 out of 131 runners at state.

FOOTBALL RECAP
In spite of graduating thirty seniors, twenty-eight of which served as starters, the Panthers came into the 2019 season with a fire to start anew under first-year head coach and former Panther, Billy Noonan ‘08. First win of the season came against six-time SPC Champion Episcopal, 32-29. This was the Knights’ first loss of the year after outscoring their previous two opponents 75-3. Other memorable nights on the gridiron include an orange & white conference road win against Concordia Lutheran. Trailing 28-21 at the half, SPX fought hard in the 4th for a score of 35-34, bringing the Panthers within one point to tie. With less than five minutes left on the clock, Panthers went for two and landed the pass. A blocked Concordia field goal attempt solidified the win for SPX. The season ended in the first round of the TAPPS Division I district
playoffs. Despite efforts to come back in the second half after being scoreless in the first ,18-0, SPX fell to Midland Christian 22-46. Panthers upheld solid leadership on both sides of the ball with seniors Cam McKeon, Jalen Davis and Thomas Meadough forging the offensive grind while Jagger Pagano pioneered the defense. Michael Bell ’15 graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Industrial Distribution. He is working at Bell & McCoy as an inside sales representative. Rachael Bell ’15 graduated from University of St. Thomas with a Major in Communications and a minor in Marketing where she also played soccer for the Celts for 4 years. During her soccer career at UST, Rachael received the Soccer team Celt award for 4 consecutive years, 2016-2017 Female Champions of Character award for UST Athletics, and team MVP her senior year. She is now working as a Marketing Assistant at ATH, an athletic training and health company.

COMMENDED STUDENT “We are so proud of Zander and his great accomplishment,” said Larsen. “Zander is a kind, intelligent young man that I have had the great pleasure of getting to know over the past four years. I have no doubt that Zander will achieve his many aspirations!” About 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended students place among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Zander Jez, son of Sean and Beth Baroski Jez '89, was named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from SPX and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, was presented by Principal Diane Larsen and Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead to this scholastically talented senior during a school-wide assembly in October.
“Zander is such a joy and a true example of a Veritas Man,” said Armistead. “He is so active here on campus – cross country, track and baseball teams, preaching team and Student Honor Board keep him busy – he is also an Eagle Scout – but he always finds time to lend a hand or make someone smile.”
VOLLEYBALL RECAP
Panthers boasted a comeback season finishing .500 (16-16), after an overall two-win stint in 2018. One of the season’s highlights included a 1st place silver bracket finish in the FAST Tournament early in the season. The title was earned after beating Village School (2-0), Concordia Lutheran (2-1) and Awty (2-0). Under first-year head coach Clare Powers, SPX Volleyball finished fourth in TAPPS
6A District 4 and advanced to area playoffs. Round one of the district tournament saw a 3-1 win over Monsignor Kelly, followed by a sweep against Incarnate Word. The team’s season ended after a tough area playoff match against district runners-up, Concordia Lutheran. Varsity volleyball was led by seniors Angelina Espinoza and Abigail Woods. THEATRE SPX WOWS AUDIENCES “We are a very dedicated and disciplined program that enjoys presenting exceptional shows to the community,” Gloria Fant, the fourth-year Theatre SPX director said. “Our standards are very high, and we put hours of hard work into each production. We want the community to know that when they attend one of our performances, they will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of talent and professionalism they witness. We strive to execute our productions at a higher than ‘school’ level and have emotionally moved and inspired our audiences.” Fant has taught for the past 35 years and has been directing plays since she was in high school. Professionally, Fant has also acted

During the day at St. Pius X, Fant teaches an acting and theater class. In the acting class, students can develop and enhance their performance skills. In theater class, they learn about the history of theater, many facets of theater and performance skills.
“Those who are motivated and thorough, rise to the top and lead the others. Some students will go on to study theater in college and may work professionally in the field, but my main goal is to help them develop skills of self-confidence and poise to prepare them for their futures.”
“Although I am teaching theater skills, my biggest hope is that the students learn how to work as a team, in the same way they would in a sports program,” Fant said. “Communication skills, leadership skills, dependability, responsibility and determination are all by-products of working as an actor or as a crew member in
There are multiple ways students can become involved in the program, which also includes not being on stage. “Not everyone wants to be onstage, so we also honor those that work behind the scenes. The crew work is so important and helps to make the actors look good. Some students are very shy but are anxious for the experience of being under the lights to help them conquer their fears. If this is the case, there are parts in the chorus to help build confidence in a safer and less-threatening manner. We are fun people who accept everyone, and we try to never judge. All skills and talent levels are welcome.” Another avenue students can become involved within the theater department is in the Technical Theater and Stagecraft class taught by John Magalhaes. “During these classes, the students learn how to design sets, costumes and props,” Fant said. “They build the sets we use for our shows and run the lights and sound. The students run the shows completely by opening night. They have opportunities to learn and practice every aspect of a theatrical production.” At the end of the day, this is about the students who Fant said she is grateful for their belief and dedication to their program. “They inspire me, make me laugh, make me cry and make me so very proud,” Fant said. “Through theater, we connect to the world, our community and to ourselves. The gifts and talents these students have shared has truly touched my heart and enriched my life.”
