Since our earliest days, St. Pius X High School has been characterized by the generous spirit of its community. Our original football field was cleared by parents and student volunteers; the window air conditioning units were installed in phases in the early 1970’s as parents raised the funds needed for their purchase; the school was scrubbed, painted, and polished in 1981 during the school-wide effort known as Panther Pride. This tradition of giving manifests itself today in the form of student food, clothing and toy drives, service learning opportunities and the countless volunteer hours of parents assisting in the Learning Center, staffing concession stands, chairing the SPX Fund and Foundation Gala and coordinating meals for Fine Arts rehearsals and athletic events. In the course of the last year, this tradition of giving has evolved into a culture of philanthropy. In addition to the sacrifice of time and talent, the SPX community has embraced the offering of sacrificial financial support to improve our School. The examples are numerous and impressive: • The SPX Fund surpassed its goal of $500,000, an increase of more than 20% over the previous year—the largest annual fund in the School’s history • Parent participation in the SPX Fund was 51%, an increase of 50% over 2011 • The Leaders in Veritas Society was formed, celebrating donors whose gifts help provide a strong financial foundation for the School • Gifts to the Set the World Ablaze campaign provided for the construction of the Brinkman entrance, roadway and Plaza, along with the infrastructure of the Science Building • Expanding their annual gift to the School, the St. Pius X High School Foundation pledged $1.2 million in support of the Set the World Ablaze campaign • The 2012 Foundation Gala, Saturday Night Fever, raised $450,000 • Membership in the Torchbearer Society, our planned giving society, increased by 16% • The Pillars Society, our leadership giving society, boasts 150 members • The number of scholarships offered by families and foundations has continued to grow Our students’ financial support of our mission has been equally remarkable: • The 2013 Raffle raised $238,000 • The Stewardship for Justice campaigns, benefitting such causes as far away as Dominican missions around the globe and Hurricane Sandy relief and as close to home as Houston Inner-City Catholic Schools, and Loaves and Fishes Mission, raised nearly $5,500. While this surge in philanthropy became apparent at 811 W. Donovan Street last year, its roots can be traced back to 1882 when 20 Dominican Sisters made the long train journey from Somerset, Ohio, to Galveston to found our Dominican educational tradition in Texas. The generosity of spirit and deed that is part of the SPX legacy was built on the shoulders of the six pioneer Dominican Sisters and the parents and families who founded St. Pius X High School in northwest Houston in 1956. And our practice of philanthropy thrives today in our students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and benefactors. Each year since 1992, we have proudly published an Annual Report which includes a roll of donors to the St. Pius X High School community. We hope that you will enjoy reading this edition of our 2012-2013 Annual Report. I am reminded of the words of our Dominican mystic Meister Eckhart, “If the only prayer we ever say in our lives is, "thank you," that will suffice.” Our prayer is “thank you” for helping us nurture a culture of philanthropy and to build a legacy through generations! Competition with Honor is the motto that is prominently displayed in the north end zone of Parsley Stadium for everyone to see who attends SPX football, soccer and rugby games, and other community events. It is a motto that is not just for athletic events – it applies to every aspect of St. Pius X High School that I have been so fortunate to be a part of since 2006 when my daughter enrolled as a sophomore. St. Pius X is blessed to have families and friends committed to the success of the School and its students. The following are just some of the blessings that our School community received during the 2012-2013 school year: • Phase IIA of the Set the World Ablaze campaign was completed with the addition of the new student entrance on the west side of our campus. The upkeep and upgrade of our school facilities allows SPX to compete with our peer schools for talented students and faculty members. I am confident that the St. Pius X High School community will help secure the additional funds needed to complete Phase IIB – the construction of the new Science Building and Library Media Center. COMPETITION WITH HONOR

• The baseball team was the state runner-up, the boys basketball team was the district champion, the football team competed in the second round of playoffs, the soccer team saluted their fans after every game (win or lose) and an SPX golfer, eight cross country members and three tennis players qualified for their respective state tournaments. Competition with Honor. • The SPX Annual Fund raised over $500,000 for the first time in the school’s history, allowing SPX to compete for matching grants to enhance our financial assistance, technology and physical plant upgrades. If the SPX Annual Fund again surpasses $500,000, the Frost Cafeteria will receive a facelift that students will enjoy. Competition with Honor. • The Del Sarto Yearbook won yet another state award, Theatre SPX entertained us with outstanding productions and the music department earned 16 individual and ensemble Superior ratings at the TAPPS State Music Contest. Competition with Honor. I have had the privilege to work with an incredible group of dedicated School Board members who are committed to ensuring that St. Pius X High School remains economically viable so that current students (such as my son Nick Minkoff ’16) and alumni (including my daughter Lauren Gerlich ’08 and my son Landon Gerlich ’11) remain proud of what SPX provided them: an outstanding Dominican education from talented and caring faculty, contact with coaches and sponsors who strive to develop the whole student (not just the athlete, musician, singer, actor or writer), exposure to social justice and service, lifelong friends and the ability to engage in Competition with Honor. Fortunately, the Zinni’s found their Louisiana home in relatively good shape, but they ultimately chose to settle in Houston. SPX was a perfect fit for Daniel—a self-described techie and member of the Class of 2008—who was accepted by all our students. Daniel is still influenced by his years here and his teachers, particularly Mary and Paul Gagne, Jason Novak and Debbie Swindler. The family hoped when the time was right to repay what they had received from St. Pius X. In the spring of 2013, they established the Zinni-Reed Family Scholarship, benefiting students from middle class families struggling to provide an SPX education for their children. Sue Zinni reflects on their decision, "Our son's years at SPX were filled with many positive and rewarding experiences, and he received a well-rounded, quality education. We created this scholarship so that other students could have these same opportunities."

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was felt not only in New Orleans but also hundreds of miles away at 811 W. Donovan Street, as St. Pius X High School welcomed over 100 students and their families who had fled the ravages of the storm. Among those were Sue and Ed Zinni and their son, Daniel. When the family first arrived in Houston, they experienced for the first time what it is like to face an uncertain future. At SPX, they found a community that was accepting and that provided all they needed to live here.

Among their other considerations in establishing the scholarship were a family commitment to education and Daniel’s close friendships with two SPX tuition-assistance students.
