From the Head of School Over the past few years, I have been researching my family tree on ancestry.com. Learning about my ancestors – discovering who they were, where they lived, what they did and the hardships and struggles they faced – is intriguing to me. When the green leaf “hint” appears while researching, it’s exciting to peak under it and discover what might be connected to the ancestry hint. Sometimes it’s a census or immigration connection, a military record or even a newspaper article, often filled with new information. At graduation, as I presented and shared the statistics about the Class of 2013, I thought about our ancestry – our legacy as the St. Pius X family. As you look through this issue of Pius News, you will see the legacy families from the Class of 2013 – a small part of our larger legacy. As the St. Pius X community, we may not all be connected to one another by blood or via hints found on ancestry.com; however, we are bonded by much more – our mission and our Dominican heritage. And we, like our ancestors, tell our stories so that we don’t forget. We remember and we celebrate. Recently, I experienced this firsthand as we celebrated the lives and told stories of some of our St. Pius X ancestors - Sister Mary de Lourdes Warren, Marvin Veal and Sister Thomas Margaret Zagst. Each one is an integral member of our St. Pius X family tree and has touched us in special and unique ways. Our Dominican ancestry can be traced back to St. Dominic de Guzman in the 13th century and St. Catherine of Siena in the 14th century. As part of their formation and ministry, St. Pius X students, faculty and staff learn our Dominican heritage and embrace and celebrate our Dominican Mission. We encourage firsthand experiences and opportunities to explore our roots such as trips to our Motherhouse in Houston or making a Pilgrimage to Galveston to learn about our Dominican Congregation’s founding in Texas in 1882. Our common ancestry and connection as members of our global Dominican family are equally important. Each summer for the past 15 years, several students and staff from St. Pius X High School join members of other Dominican high schools from across the United States at our National Dominican High School Preaching Conference. In addition, for the second time, St. Pius X faculty members sojourn in the steps of Saints Dominic and Catherine on the Lands of Dominic Pilgrimage in France and Italy this summer. And currently, we have close to 20 members of our St. Pius X family who have made their commitment in the Dominican Family of Houston.

Though we may not find our Dominican or St. Pius X family tree on ancestry.com, there are thousands of St. Pius X family members who embody the Dominican charism as descendants of Saints Dominic and Catherine. The most recent - the 152 young men and women of our 55th graduating class, the Class of 2013. These new alumni carry with them our Dominican charism as they Teach Truth and Preach Justice in the world they are about to enter. Their charge, like all Dominicans, is to be torchbearers of Veritas/Truth. I hope that as each of us uncovers the “hint” that connects us to our ancestry as a Dominican family, that we continue to tell stories, and remember and celebrate those who paved the way for us as Torchbearers of Truth. In Veritas,

Donna M. Pollard, O.P. Head of School

Pius News Brinkman Construction Complete, Campaign Focus Shifts to Science Building

SPX Fund Reaches $500,000 Benchmark

With the completion of the new entrance on Brinkman and the plaza area outside the West Campus Entrance, the focus of the Set the World Ablaze campaign has turned to the Science Building. In the days since the Science Building first appeared on the drawing boards, the scope of the project has expanded to include a Media Center which will replace the existing Library. Although the Center is still in the final design stages, the renderings below provide a clear indication of the direction of the project.

The SPX Fund reached a milestone this year, raising over $500,000 for the first time in the history of the School. Thanks to the inspired leadership of Fund Chair Pat Murray and the dedication of class chairs and homeroom agents, current parent participation marked a return to best practices standards. As of June 20, funds raised for the SPX Fund have reached $500,593.

The new Media Center will be a light-filled, open space with study tables and small meeting rooms allowing students to work collaboratively, using electronic devices for research and composition. The Center will still maintain stacks of print materials, but the emphasis will be on 21st century learning styles and research methods. For additional information on the Science Building or the Set the World Ablaze campaign, please contact Mary Linda Portner, Director of Advancement, at portnerml@stpiusx.org or 713-579-7512.

Fundamental to the success of this year’s Fund was the institution of the Leaders In Veritas Society, a group of lead donors who pledged significant financial support to ensure that the unique experience that is St. Pius X continues to thrive. Also of note is the 100% participation by both the faculty and staff and the School Board, and 87% participation by the Foundation Board. Current parent participation also reached a recent high of 50%. Kudos to Pat Murray, his leadership team of AJ and Dave Johnson, Class of 2013; Drudy and Kevin Sullivan, Class of 2014; Kim and Bob Bell, Class of 2015; Kathy and Frank Anderson, Class of 2016; and SPX Fund Director Bea Emanuel-Sims! Commenting on the 2013 Drive, Murray said, “The SPX Fund is such a vital driver of so many key parts of our School’s success, and reaching the $500,000 milestone was only possible through the strong support of our parents, faculty and staff and key donors. With all that we are improving and supporting with this year’s funds, imagine what lies ahead if we can raise $600,000 or even $1 million. St. Pius X High School’s future has never been brighter.”

Every Dollar of Your

Directly Benefits St. Pius X Students

Pius News Angelo Palazzolo Memorial Scholarship Awarded

Eight Students Earn UST/Archdiocesan Essay Contest Awards

Knights of Columbus Present Annual Scholarship

“One of the important goals of the SPX academic program is to assist our students in recognizing and developing their writing skills, in order to prepare them for college and careers.” The event included a Mass celebrated by the Most. Rev. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and concelebrated by priests from throughout the Archdiocese, the awards ceremony, and a reception at the Cathedral Centre. Eight students from St. Pius X were honored at the ninth annual UST/Archdiocesan Essay Contest Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. St. Pius X swept the 12th grade awards with Laura Loustalot earning first place, Stephanie LaMotta second and Nathan Sityangco third. Gena Markantonis was awarded third place for 11th grade and Haley Shoebotham received third place for 10th grade. Ashley Holt, Jennifer Shereen and Miranda Turner earned honorable mention. “We are very proud of our students,” Academic Dean Diane Larsen said. “Of the nine essays SPX submitted, eight placed. That is fantastic!

Finalist essays from each grade level were read and ranked by UST faculty and staff members, who chose the winners. The essays from first-place winners in every grade level were enlarged as posters and put on display at the reception. First- and second-place winners were also awarded $1,500 scholarships if they choose to attend UST. SPX students had the opportunity to meet and shake hands with Cardinal DiNardo and Superintendent of Catholic Schools Sister Kevina Keating, CCVI. Over the last eight years, the UST Catholic Outreach Office has sponsored an essay contest focusing on the benefits and meaning of a Catholic education.

SPX Hosts Learn, Lift & Launch - The Biennial Learning Differences Symposium

The Angelo Palazzolo Memorial Scholarship has been awarded annually each spring since 2005. Vincent Palazzolo, Angelo’s brother and Pat Svrcek, Treasurer of the SPX Foundation, presented the recipients their awards on Monday, May 20.

Welcoming diversity of all kinds is inherent in the mission of St. Pius X High School—as is our commitment to offering academic excellence to all our students.

The recipients of the 2013 Angelo Palazzolo Memorial Scholarship are ShaNeshia Roberson, the Solorio Family – Ashley and Anthony Solorio – and Alexandra Williams.

On Saturday, March 23, SPX held its Biennial Learning Differences Symposium which featured Dr. Jay Tarnow, a leading national expert on childhood and family stress, psychosomatic illness and self-management disorders, as the luncheon speaker.

SPX Bids Farewell to Longtime Spanish Teacher

The full-day symposium focused on school support for children with Asperger’s disorder or autism, the dyslexic student and the challenges of the classroom, and technology and learning differences. Students, parents and alumni of the SPX Learning for Success Program, the office of the Academic Dean and the Advancement, Counseling, and Admissions staffs joined forces for the full-day event, each making it possible for all our students to learn, be lifted intellectually and spiritually, and be launched to successful lives. 8

Angelo Palazzolo ‘70 was a supportive St. Pius X alum, giving generously to the School throughout his life. Ultimately through a personal bequest and an additional gift from his estate by his family, the Angelo Palazzolo Memorial Fund, a perpetual scholarship, was created. It was Angelo’s family’s wish that the scholarship recipient be an SPX student whose history and background reflect Angelo’s own: the child of a middle class family sacrificing to provide a Catholic education.

The final day of the 2012-2013 academic year marked not only the close of school for the summer, but also the retirement of longtime Foreign Language Department Chair Gloria McCreary, after 22 years of service to the students of St. Pius X High School. Over the course of her career, Mrs. McCreary taught Spanish at many levels, from Spanish I to AP Spanish, carrying as many as five or six classes and four preparations. In 2008, Mrs. McCreary was awarded the prestigious John McMahon Teaching Chair Award at St. Pius X. “What sets her apart is that she is a woman of faith who leads by example,” Head of School Sr. Donna M. Pollard, O.P. said. “She does not allow students to give up on themselves or slip through the cracks. She is an exemplary teacher who is generous with her time and talents.”

In 2011, the Knights of Columbus Council 2917 established a scholarship program for St. Pius X rising seniors. The scholarships, based on need and merit, are funded by the Council’s annual Casino Night, a community fundraiser. Three representatives from the K of C Council 2917 – Mr. James Urbanovsky, Grand Knight of Council 2917, Mr. Doug Wendt, Trustee and Chairman of Casino Night, and Mr. Benny Okruhlik, Financial Secretary – were on hand Monday, May 20, to announce the winners. The five recipients of the 2013 Knights of Columbus Scholarship as selected by the Council are Thien Cao, Christopher Golden, John Johnson, Adriana Trejo and Ellie Vela.

2013 Spring Show: Round Up the Usual Suspects for A Nite In Casablanca

A Raisin in the Sun Kicks Off Black History Month

For one night only, Saturday, May 18, the St. Pius X Fine Arts Department presented live and in concert A Nite In Casablanca. The 2013 spring show and dinner cabaret starred the award-winning St. Pius X Concert Chorale and Campus Singers, accompanied by the Casablanca Orchestra. Featuring 1940’s Hit Parade tunes and a savory Moroccan inspired menu, the 16th annual spring show saluted the music and paid tribute to the timeless film and of time gone by.

Presented in association with the St. Pius X Black History Club and produced by Alicia Green Dettman, A Raisin in the Sun expressed the hopes, dreams and dignity of all who have worked to leave behind a better life for their children. The studio production, with all seats placed on stage, provided the audience with an amazing, intimate theatrical experience. Orchestrated in just 18 rehearsal days, and with a cast of varying experience levels, A Raisin in the Sun was an extraordinary way to begin SPX’s celebration of Black History Month in February.

Prior to the Friday performance, the Black History Club sponsored a reception featuring guest speaker and alum, Samuel Milledge ‘00. Pictured to the left from L-R: Academic Dean Diane Larsen, Samuel Milledge, SPX Fund Director and Black History Club Advisor Bea Emanuel-Sims and Head of School Sister Donna M. Pollard, O.P. Introducing the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2013 read over 5,000 pages for the Page Turner award and earned summa cum laude in the National Latin Exam. Sister Donna describes Shely as a “values-centered young woman who pursues her interests wholeheartedly with enthusiasm, responsibility and dedication.” Her mother considers her honest, intellectually curious, compassionate and funny. Shely said her friends tease her for her dedication to working hard and her obsession with certain historical figures, but respect her for her integrity. Shely will continue to colorfully satisfy her love for learning at Boston College in the fall as a member of the Honors Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. She plans to double major in history and political science and would like to become a published author and be involved politically.

Allison Shely Allison Shely used color to keep her life at St. Pius X organized. Written each day in her Time Tracker, in the same order of her classes, was a list of homework and assignments, color-coded by class. Subsequently, it was only fitting that when asked what advice she would give to current SPX students, it was to “write everything down.” Shely was inducted into the National Honor Society as a sophomore, moved into a role as a junior representative and was the NHS service hour coordinator as a senior. For four years she was a member of the Honor Board, Choir, History Club and Latin Club. Shely served as vice president of the Honor Board; she was a four-time member of the award-winning, state champion Treble Choir, advanced to state as a solo performer three times and was a state champion her senior year. She was the president of the History Club and president of the Latin Club. She was also the editor and a founding member of the Literary Magazine. With such a phenomenal range of interests and talents, writing everything down allowed Shely to better manage her time and enjoy what she was doing. “I got joy from learning,” Shely said. “I wanted to do well in school, and I had the ability to do well, so for the first time, high school was where I really applied myself.” Her inexhaustible drive, talent and determination earned her abounding academic honors as well. Shely was a National Merit Commended Scholar, she received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and was a member of the Head of School Honor Roll every semester. She achieved the Golden Pencil for four years of Excellence in honors mathematics, attained Excellence in three AP classes and honors economics, and honorable mention twice in Theology IV. She 12

Link participated in art competitions for two years and earned fourth in district and sixth in state in drawing. She also garnered honorable mention in the district for on-site drawing. Link was a member of the choir and said she loves to sing.

The Class of 2013 Honored at Senior Awards

How did she stay so involved and still do so well academically? Link humbly said that she just had to manage her time, “I’d spend a specific time slot on certain things and make sure I got everything done before moving on to next thing.” Through high school, Link’s extraordinary work ethic allowed her to focus more and more on what was important to her and where she wanted to go in life. “My freshman year, I was more worried about fitting in than academics and athletics,” she said. “I realized that’s not what life’s about, it’s just about being happy. I started caring less about fitting in and then just tried to be happy. I wanted to have the academics to get into a good college, so I can get into a good vet school and follow my dreams.”

Mr. and Ms. Panther Awards and Del Sarto Award Kenneth Danna, Anna Wilhelm and Vincent King

Sister Donna added that Link “pursues her goals with exuberance, dedication and determination.” Link volunteered at the Oregon Zoo every summer as a ZooTeen. She educated the public as they walked through the zoo, entertained children and cared for animals. She also served as a camp assistant at the zoo’s Family Farm and shadowed at the Houston Zoo. Link will attend Bates College in the fall and plans to major in biology/pre-veterinary medicine. Mason Ott Memorial Scholarship - Spencer Elston (pictured far left)

Noel Aubyn Link Academically, athletically, artistically and more, Noel Aubyn Link is the epitome of a bright, well-rounded young woman. She achieved the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, was a three-year member of the National Honor Society and a member of the Head of School Honor Roll every semester. She earned excellence in AP calculus BC, ceramics and painting, and honorable mention in AP biology. Link was a four-year varsity volleyball player and was named a captain her senior year. She was selected TAPPS all-state honorable mention as a senior, along with receiving all-district honors each year. In addition, TAPPS awarded Link academic all-state honors in volleyball. She threw discus for the track and field team and as a swimmer, earned fifth in state and set the school record in the 4x100 relay.

Zachary Henry Earns All-State Academic Award Zachary Henry was named one of the top 20 scholars in the state as a member of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals All-State Academic Excellence Team. He will attend Texas A&M University in the fall.

Lessons Learned: Reflections by the Class of 2013 We are grateful to Kenneth Danna, Kristine Domingo, Spencer Elston, Aubyn Link, Laura Loustalot, Caroline Schell, and J.P. Udenenwu for their invaluable insights. Schools are living organisms, evolving as much to reflect their student populations as the times in which they operate. As the newest alumni of St. Pius X High School, the Class of 2013, approached graduation, we were curious as to how they would assess the changes they experienced at SPX over the last four years—and how they saw with new eyes those things which remained unchanged. A few days before graduation, we visited with a group of graduating seniors (Kenneth Danna, Kristine Domingo, Spencer Elston, Aubyn Link, Laura Loustalot, Caroline Schell, and J.P. Udenenwu) and posed those questions. Their answers truly reflect how much things change—and how much they stay the same. The students immediately noted—and enthusiastically endorsed— the integration of technology into the curriculum and into their daily classroom experience. From smart boards to laptops to Bring Your Own Device, they found that using technology to organize and inform their studies has better prepared them for college—at least academically. They are uncertain whether they are emotionally prepared for this next big step. As the leaders of the School, the seniors believe they have restored Panther Pride and school spirit to the level they remember as ninth graders. They very wisely understand that the attitude of leaders is reflected in the behavior of their followers (they describe their predecessors, the Class of 2012, as being “chilled out), and they are very optimistic that school spirit will reach new heights under the leadership of the Class of 2014. Changes to the extended administrative team also brought positive reviews, as they gave high marks to Ms. Lawler for her assistance in college counseling (“She’s great!”) and to the introduction of Mr. Hornsby and Mr. Novak as assistant deans of students, grateful not

only for their approachability but also for the time the associate deans were able to give to students.

Class of 2013 Legacy Families The Class of 2013 added 16 Legacy Families to the SPX ranks on Saturday, May 25. Each of these new graduates are at least second-generation Panthers.

The most provocative thoughts were reserved for the food service in the cafeteria. Echoing the current national debate over nutrition and economics, the students noted that while the food quality largely improved, it also became more expensive. One student described the issue as a matter of social justice, noting that the quality of food and the pricing of food are related to Dominican tenets (we should do the best we can with what we have), and that these values should be incorporated into all aspects of life at SPX. On a lighter note (and one that their parents will recognize), they all lament the absence of “perfectly seasoned French fries.” In reflecting on things that are unchanged but that they see with new eyes, the students echoed generations of their elders when they exclaimed, “Freshmen! They are really little, really awkward, and why do they have smart phones? Was I that bad?” Ironically, the students also echoed older generations as they bemoaned the fact that today’s frosh don’t seem as respectful as they were, and they certainly don’t look up to seniors as our Class of ’13 did when they were in ninth grade.

And, as older (and wiser) alums have learned, they see their teachers with fresh eyes, too. Those authority figures who also nurtured them as freshmen are now more approachable, yet they continue to challenge the seniors as young adults. Our seniors found the last year to be unexpected: it was more difficult and more interminable than they imagined it would be. But to the end, they ran the good race, setting new records, garnering a multitude of awards, and leaving their indelible, unique mark as the Class of 2013.

Pius News Kohl Stewart Drafted No. 4 and Signed by the Minnesota Twins St. Pius X’s two-sport All-American, Kohl Stewart, was the first high school pitcher selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. The fourth overall pick by the Minnesota Twins, Stewart signed with the organization two weeks later. The assigned money slot for the No. 4 pick was $4.54 million. Prior to the draft, Stewart was the top-ranked high-school pitching prospect in the country. He posted a 5-1 record with an 0.18 ERA in 40 innings for the Panthers. He had 59 strikeouts and walked 16 over eight starts this season. As a junior, he went 8-0 with 72 strikeouts in 54 innings. Stewart had previously committed to play football at Texas A&M.

SPX Baseball: 2013 TAPPS 5A State Runner-up St. Pius X head coach Adam Massiatte ‘01 has led the Panther baseball team to the TAPPS 5A state championship game three times in the last five years, with titles in 2009 and 2012. On Tuesday, May 14, 2013, the defending state champions fell just short of back-to-back titles. “We had the guys to do it, just a few things didn’t go our way,” Massiatte said. “We’re going to reset it, learn from this experience and try to get back to this game next year.” As the visiting team against Argyle Liberty Christian in Belton, Texas, the Panthers struck first as leadoff batter Luis Sanchez drew a walk. He was sacrificed to second by Chase Fontana and stole third on the next pitch. Jerry Murillo’s single through the left side scored Sanchez and gave SPX a quick 1-0 lead. The Warriors then scored six unanswered runs for a 6-1 victory. “We didn’t get too many chances after that first inning to get back on it,” Massiatte said. “We had a rough time getting a leadoff runner on, so that made it a little tougher for us to play the game we’re used to playing. It’s a learning experience for everybody, but the boys did

a good job of trying to compete and do whatever they could for the team.” Making the TAPPS 5A All-Tournament Team were Kohl Stewart, Jerry Murillo, Sanchez and Joe Gerringer. Playing in their final game were the seniors of the Class of 2013: Kenneth Danna, Gerringer, Ross Kiatta, Ben Little, Damitri Morris, Stuart Peterson, Sanchez, Joel Segura, Stewart and Dylan Tarpey. “They’re a good group of guys who really committed themselves to trying to be as good as they could,” Massiate said. “They mean a lot to the program. They’ve been able to reinforce and validate the hard work to be able to get us back here.” To advance to the championship game, All-American pitcher Stewart allowed only three hits and struck out 11 to lead St. Pius X to a 5-1 win over St. Thomas – a team the Panthers had lost to three times during the regular season.

Kohl Stewart was also named Athlete of the Year by Memorial Hermann and KPRC Local 2. St. Pius X received a $2,500 check from Memorial Hermann in honor of Stewart winning the 2013 award.

“I’m very excited about the chance to work with the staff, parents and kids at St. Pius X,” Carr said. “I hope to bring some excitement to the basketball community – that same excitement that has been generated by the consistent success seen in other sports at SPX, especially in both baseball and football. It will be a great challenge going from Class 4A to 5A, but one I am ready for. I look forward to building a program that is not only strong within Houston, but recognized throughout the state.” A native of Guntersville, Ala., Carr graduated from Guntersville High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in social science with an emphasis in criminal justice from Faulkner University, where he was a member of the basketball team.

This season, Kade Stewart became the first St. Pius X freshman to qualify for the TAPPS State Golf Championship, April 29-30 at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple, Texas. The 15-year-old shot a 164 and finished 25th in a field of 50 of the best TAPPS 5A golfers in the state.

To qualify for state, Stewart shot a 163 at the regional tournament at the Dallas Athletic Club.

When he’s not playing for SPX, Stewart is involved in tournaments with the Texas Junior Golf Tour, the Legends Junior Tour and the American Junior Golf Association.

After claiming the district title for the first time in 12 years last season, St. Pius X softball earned back-to back district championships in 2013. Under third-year head coach Nellie Kelly, the Lady Panthers were nearly perfect in district play with a 9-1 record. “We had a lot of great triumphs this year,” Kelly said. “The way we worked together made this team the most cohesive I’ve coached in years.” Pitcher Raquel Tello was the top-ranked player in the district as a junior and a first-team all-state selection. She was joined by Samantha Grosch and Carah Nunez as first-team all-state honorees. Jourdan Alvarez was second team all-state. Alvarez (catcher), Nunez (third base) and Briana Santiago (right fielder) were the squad’s three members of the Class of 2013. Nunez will continue her softball career at San Jacinto College. “They stepped up as such great leaders,” Kelly said. “I know they have a bright future, and it’s been such a joy to coach them.”

The St. Pius X High School Rugby Program is pleased to announce that beginning with the 2013 season a scholarship program was set up to aid members of the team in their academic pursuits. The scholarships are based on a combination of academic achievement, a minimum of two years participation in the SPX rugby program and financial need. Awards in the amounts of $2,000 and $1,500 were made to two graduating seniors to be applied towards their college education. The idea for the program began two years ago when head coach Lowell Locke noticed that several of his graduating seniors passed up their first-choice colleges in favor of ones closer to home or ones that were less expensive to attend. “I usually follow up with my players to see what schools they are targeting and encourage them to aim for the best,” Locke said. “It bothered me to see the disappointment when, for some, it came down to finances being the deciding factor in their decision. “While our goal as a rugby program is to develop talented high school players, we are also about developing young men. We constantly stress to the players that St. Pius X High School is about education and preparing themselves for college. They need to put as much time and effort into their studies as they do preparing for a match. These scholarships are our way of reinforcing that message to the players and their parents.” The recipients of this year’s scholarships, from the Class of 2013 are Jacob Jozwiak ($2,000) and Jaylin Lee ($1,500). Lee (Sam Houston State), Sebastian Schwartz (Wheeling Jesuit University) and Robert Wolf (St. Edwards University) will continue their rugby careers at the collegiate level. stpiusx.org | 27

Alumni News: In Memoriam Sister Mary de Lourdes Warren, O.P. October 27, 1915 - May 8, 2013 Sr. Mary de Lourdes Warren, O.P., was born in 1915 in Omaha, Neb. She joined the Houston Dominican Sisters in 1932, after graduating from Saint Agnes Academy. Study was integral to her life and ministry, earning her B.A. from Incarnate Word (San Antonio) and her M.A. from George Peabody (Nashville). She continued her studies by completing classes and programs in journalism, movie-making, management design, Spanish and becoming a certified Para-Legal in 1983, in which capacity she worked until 1987. An excellent teacher, Sister de Lourdes taught in secondary schools in Houston (St. Agnes Academy and St. Pius X 1957-1960), Beaumont (St. Anthony); Riverside, Calif. (St. Francis). From 1964-1975, she served as Academic Dean at Dominican College, influencing countless students and encouraging them with her radiant smile.

Memories of Sister Mary de Lourdes by Barbara Snyder Robeau ‘59 Sister Mary de Lourdes Warren was a beautiful woman who contributed so much to my life. I will always be grateful to have known her. I first met Sister de Lourdes in 1955 at St. Agnes Academy on Fannin Street in Houston. She was my teacher for a freshman class entitled Christian Family Living. In addition to instructing us girls in mannerly and ethical behavior, she taught us practical skills, such as crocheting, darning and tatting. One individual assignment was designing a “dream house” and compiling a booklet with the house plan and magazine photos or drawings of the decoration of each room. That project called for creativity and imagination, and the class really enjoyed it.

to include in my articles as many students’ names as possible in order to encourage readership. In much later years, I recalled that practice when, as secretary for my women’s club, I wrote that organization’s news for the neighborhood newsletter. Also while in journalism class, Sister de Lourdes assigned Penny Quintero Summers ‘59 and Gayle Mistric McCrary ‘59 and I the coverage of the 1959 Spring Fashion Show at Foley’s department store downtown. We three girls loved pretty clothes, so we considered this assignment great fun and a great honor. Another special honor from Sister de Lourdes was an invitation to me to shop with her one Saturday. After shopping, she even took me to her parents’ home and introduced me to them. I’ll always treasure the memory of her personal interest in me.

In 1957, Sister de Lourdes left St. Agnes to help with the opening of St. Pius X High School, but I remained at St. Agnes for my sophomore year. However, for my junior year my parents allowed me to join my friends at St. Pius, which was located only a few miles from our home.

Sister de Lourdes was a role model, a friend, even a “second mother.” I truly admired and loved her, and I’ll always be grateful for her positive influence on me. She was a beautiful soul who enriched so many lives.

At St. Pius X High School, Sister de Lourdes was my journalism and home room teacher. She also directed our senior play, Girl Shy, in which I had a role. In journalism class, Sister de Lourdes taught me
