FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

What exciting times are ahead of us and what a wonderful gift to help (our) students discover and live lives of Veritas!

L

ong-time readers of Pius News may recall that I have previously noted that schools are living organisms, constantly evolving and changing. As I pen this message, in the summer of 2015, the SPX community is undergoing another period of change—a season of growth—for our St. Pius X School Community.

the School Board has made a leap of faith and authorized a loan to allow construction to begin this summer. We will continue to raise funds throughout the year to reach our campaign goal and to assist in retiring the debt. We are grateful for those who have supported our campaign and helped us to get this far. It is our hope that all members of our community will respond with an enthusiastic “yes!” when asked to support this project.

One immediately apparent and annual sign of growth is the matriculation of the Class of 2015. It is with a great deal of love and pride that we send these young people into the world to represent the best of St. Pius X High School. Their ranks include talented scholars, athletes, artists and preachers. They have earned a record $9.9 million in scholarships and have given back more than 18,000 hours of service to their communities. You can read more about their accomplishments beginning on page 22 in this issue.

This season of growth also extends to the administration of the School. Earlier this spring I announced the appointment of Mrs. Diane Larsen as principal at St. Pius X High School. Diane will oversee the day to day operations of the school - academics, counseling, and student life, including athletics and extracurriculars. She will be assisted by Dean of Students Mr. Jeff Donaruma and Academic Dean Mr. Marc Martinez, along with other members of the principal’s team. I will continue to serve as Head of School, focusing my energies on advancing our mission and Dominican identity and serving the larger School faith community. In this issue of Pius News, you will also see other new areas of growth, such as our Best Buddies Chapter and lacrosse programs.

A second readily apparent sign of this season of growth is occurring on the west side of our campus as we anticipate breaking ground later this summer on our Science Building. While additional funds remain to be raised to meet the construction costs,

During this season of growth we will also commence preparations for the 800th anniversary of the Order of Preachers, whose celebration will begin this fall with the Feast of All Saints of the Order on November 7 and will culminate in 2016 – just as we begin our own St. Pius X High School 60th Jubilee celebration in 2016-17. Sixty years ago, Bishop Nold, in speaking about the founding of St. Pius X High School spoke of “a location conducive to the demands of a space-age education.” And now sixty years later, as we embark on breaking ground for a new science building, Pope Francis, in his recent encyclical Laudato Si’ challenges us to engage in “a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet.” What exciting times are ahead of us and what a wonderful gift to help (our) students discover and live lives of Veritas! Prayer, Study, Community and Preaching – this is Dominican education at St. Pius X High School.

In Veritas,

Donna M. Pollard, O.P. Head of School

ST. PIUS X SEES RECORD-BREAKING FUNDRAISING IN 2014-15

S

ince our earliest days, St. Pius X High School has been known for the generous spirit of its community. The tradition of giving time and energy to make St. Pius X a better place has expanded to include financial support of the School as well. This tradition of giving was truly embraced by the SPX family during the 2014-15 school year. We are happy to announce that the SPX Fund raised more than $550,000 - $25,000 over its goal – and the Raffle grossed over $250,000 – both record-breaking amounts! Each annual campaign directly benefits St. Pius X students by supporting the general operations of the School. We thank everyone who has generously contributed to the SPX Fund or supported the Raffle. Your investment in the future of St. Pius X High School allows us to continue to challenge our students to realize their full potential. “This is a tremendous vote of confidence our supporters have given St. Pius X,” said Sister Donna M. Pollard, O.P., Head of School. “The fact that we raised more than we ever have is beyond all expectations. And to think about the impact that every single gift will have — from keeping tuition low for all St. Pius X families or supporting and upgrading our technology, to giving the faculty the tools they need to prepare our students for life beyond SPX — it’s really awe inspiring.” The 2014-15 SPX Fund Chairs were Kim and Bob Bell. Class chairs included Debra and David Mouton (seniors), Stephanie and Kirby and Shanks (juniors), Jennifer and Michael Paneral (sophomores) and Lorraine and Orin Lewis (freshmen). The Raffle Promotions Committee was chaired by senior Bo Garza.

SCIENCE BUILDING BECOMES A REALITY With the appearance of earth-moving machinery and construction staging in mid-August, the dream of a new Science Building on the west campus of SPX begins to take shape. While additional funds remain to be raised to fully fund the building, the School Board of Directors chose to take advantage of favorable market conditions to move forward on the project. The School will rely on the generosity of the SPX community and will continue to fundraise to meet the remaining commitment. Stewart Builders, the contractor for Phase 1 of our master plan implementation, was awarded the contract. The projected time of construction is one year, the new building being available for occupancy in the fall of 2016.

BOOSTER CLUB GOLF CLASSIC A GREAT SUCCESS St. Pius X athletics held its annual Booster Club Golf Classic on Friday, April 17, 2015 at the Wildcat Golf Club. Golfers participated in the scramble golf format and helped gross over $45,000 for the Booster Club, which provides supplemental funds to the Panther athletic department. “These much needed funds benefit all sports at SPX,” said Lisa Buss, Booster Club President. “The careful preparation, teamwork, and the day itself had such a great feeling. To be outdoors playing golf and to dine with friends and family to support Panther athletics – and ultimately helping our student-athletes — it all resonated with a lot of love and generosity.” The day included driving range practice, 18 holes of golf, lunch and dinner, contest, awards, beverages and an auction. The success of this year’s events would not be possible without support from the golfers, volunteers and title sponsor, Moran Shipping Agencies, Inc.

STUDENTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS AT UNDERCLASS AWARDS CEREMONY Angelo Palazzolo ’ 70 Memorial Scholarship The Angelo Palazzolo ’70 Memorial Scholarship has been awarded annually each spring since 2005. Administered by the St. Pius X Foundation, the scholarship is given to a St. Pius X student whose history and background reflect Angelo’s own: the child of a middle-class family, sacrificing to provide a Catholic education. Since its inception, 31 scholarship grants have been awarded. Congratulations to recipients Stanley Finch and Megan Metcalf with SPX Foundation Treasurer Pat Svrcek and Vincent Palazzolo.

Leather Apron Foundation Scholarship The Leather Apron Foundation (LAF), composed of community-minded individuals from Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, Shepherd Park Plaza, Greater Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, established a scholarship in 2014 to recognize two rising seniors who have demonstrated their willingness to improve their country by improving their community through service. Congratulations to recipients Darlene Nguyen and Iyvor Hypolite with LAF President Jonathan Kolmetz ’98 and Vice President Dr. Brian Wisnoski ’98.

Zinni-Reed Family Scholarship In the spring of 2013, Sue and Ed Zinni and their son, Daniel ’08, established the Zinni-Reed Family Scholarship, which benefits students from middle-class families struggling to provide an SPX education for their children. In reflection on their decision, Mrs. Zinni noted, "Our son's years at SPX were filled with many positive and rewarding experiences, and he received a well-rounded, quality education. We created this scholarship so that other students could have these same opportunities." Congratulations to three-time recipient Jairo Suarez and two-time recipient Laura Snider, with Daniel Zinni ’08.

Knights of Columbus Council 2917 Scholarship In 2011, the Knights of Columbus Council 2917 established a scholarship program for eligible St. Pius X High School rising seniors. SPX SOPHOMORE WINS FIRST PLACE IN UST/ARCHDIOCESAN ESSAY CONTEST FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW For the second straight year, St. Pius X’s Kathleen Blute earned top honors in the University of St. Thomas/Archdiocesan Essay Contest. Blute and three other St. Pius X students received their awards at the 11th annual Mass and Awards Ceremony on Jan. 20 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Blute won first place out of 350 submitted essays by sophomores. As a freshman last year, she also wrote a first-place essay and received a $2,500 scholarship to UST, should she enroll. Blute’s essay this year was on the topic of a picture of Jesus titled “Forgiven.” It included what stood out to her in the picture, what symbols she saw and how the picture helped her discover God’s love more fully.

633 finalists. Finalist essays from each grade level were read and ranked by 90 UST faculty and staff members and alumni, who chose the winners. The essays of all first-place winners were enlarged as posters and displaed at the reception. The contest was held just prior to National Catholic Schools Week, a time to focus on the benefits of Catholic education.

Fellow sophomore Julia McNulty, junior Elizabeth Hopmann and senior Anna Laflin were awarded honorable mention for their essays. Each student received a metal cross, and Blute received a cross decorated with barbed wire. The event began with a Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. George A. Sheltz, auxiliary bishop of Galveston-Houston, and concelebrated by priests from throughout the Archdiocese. The awards ceremony and a reception at the Cathedral Centre followed. Bishop Sheltz shook the hands of each student, and during his homily he expressed gratitude for the Catholic schools, including UST. SPX students were also greeted by Dr. Julie Vogel, superintendent of Catholic schools, and UST President Robert Ivany, who pinned students with the UST star. A total of 6,157 Catholic school students from third through 12th grades in 49 schools wrote essays and the winners were selected from

SHEEREN ORGANIZES BEST BUDDIES CHAPTER At our first meeting, I expected about 15 people, but there were 90. – Jenny Sheeren '15, Founder & President SPX Best Buddies Promotor Chapter

Sheeren expressed that her favorite thing about Best Buddies was seeing the impact it has on both the student and the person with IDD.

L

ike every other rising senior at St. Pius X High School, Jenny Sheeren committed 100 hours of direct community service to an organization to complete her Christian Service Learning course. What was unique about Sheeren’s service the summer between her junior and senior year? It uncovered her passion for working with children with disabilities, and changed the course of her life. Sheeren volunteered at Camp Blessing Texas, a summer camp for children and young adults with a physical or intellectual disability. The experience influenced her in a way she never imagined. “It just really impacted me and changed what I wanted to do for life,” Sheeren said. “I wanted to continue the work I was doing over the summer when I came back to school. A bunch of the counselors at camp had been a part of Best Buddies at their colleges and that’s where I first learned about the organization.” Best Buddies® is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Sheeren began contacting people from Best Buddies and St. Pius X in June 2014 and started the SPX Best Buddies Promoter Chapter the beginning of the her senior year. “At our first meeting, I expected about 15 people, but there were 90,” Sheeren said. “I bought cookies the night before and ran out in the first few minutes.” This dedicated group of students has participated in a Best Buddies talent show, fashion show, friendship walk and West University Little League Challenger Baseball. They even hosted an official Best Buddies Ambassador with Down Syndrome, Michael Lovine, to speak at SPX, then led an advisory session called Spread the Word to End the Word, which aimed at eliminating the use of the "r-word" in everyday language. They also volunteered extensively at Avondale House, which specializes in working with children and adults with severe autism.

“I love watching students interact with individuals with disabilities, and seeing how both bring so much joy to each other’s lives,” she said. In its first year, the SPX Best Buddies Promotor Chapter received the “Rookie of the Year Award” from Best Buddies Houston for its impressive initiative and involvement. The student club is also up for the “Promotor Chapter of the Year Award” from Best Buddies Texas. Sheeren was the founder and president of the SPX Best Buddies Chapter. Ashley Solorio served as vice president, Haley Shoebotham was the assistant volunteer coordinator, and Mrs. Trudi Dattilo was the club sponsor. Sheeren graduated from St. Pius X as salutatorian of the Class of 2015, but her passion for working with individuals with disabilities will remain. Over the summer she is on staff at Camp Blessing, and then starts her college career at Vanderbilt University in the fall where she will major in special education. “I hope that the Best Buddies chapter will continue at SPX and that my mark will be left in that club,” she said. “It summarizes what I believe, and I know that it will continue to be a great addition to our school.”

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT BROUGHT TO LIFE FOR SPX STUDENTS Close Up provides one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to experience their government in action. By Victor Takacs (Close Up Sponsor and Social Studies Department Faculty) During the week of Jan. 18, 2015, 15 St. Pius X students headed to Washington D.C. on a quest to learn more about our unique and intricate American political system. As the airplane approached the runway of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, visions of “the modern Rome” greeted our wide-eyed St. Pius X students. Each Panther embarked on a very busy and jam-packed week full of sightseeing, political and current events workshops, social events and educational debates. As participants in this world-renowned program, SPX students met an array of other students who came from Florida, California, Louisiana and other parts of Texas. The program featured student membership upwards of 500. All of these students stayed in numerous hotels throughout the greater Washington metropolitan area. SPX students made their new home for the week at the Westin Hotel Crystal City in Virginia. SPX students saw the White House, the Pentagon, the Capitol Building, the Supreme Court Building, a multitude of Smithsonian Museums, and numerous D.C. monuments and memorials dedicated to America’s heroes. The students also participated in neighborhood studies pertinent to Washington’s ethnically diverse inner city areas, including Chinatown and various university communities. On Wednesday, Jan. 21, SPX Close Up members were able to access the galleries of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill to see legislation in action. The Close Up Foundation, which is responsible for running this prestigious program, was founded in 1971 through a desire to help American and international students become more familiar with the political landscape of the United States. The Foundation itself offers teenage youth an unprecedented “close up” view of our nation’s government. Participants of the 2015 Close Up Washington program included seniors Emily Clooney, Christopher East, Molly Persha, Bo Garza, Giovanni Torres-Aponte, Claire Mangin, Thomas Barrera, Amelia Markantonis, Olivia Alexander, Gabriela Torres, Gerardo Vasquez, Megan Cardenas, Doug Pechacek, Sarah McCahill, Griselda Gomez, and Faculty Co-Sponsors Ms. Erin VanWassenhove and Mr. Victor Takacs. “We are already excited about next year’s Close Up program,” Takacs said. “This unique experience tends to be one of the major highlights of students’ high school careers.”

MEET ST. PIUS X'S FEATURE TWIRLER: ANITA HOPMANN

F

reshman Anita Hopmann was strolling through a dollar store with her mother when she came across a children’s water baton. Nearly three years later, she has won regional and national competitions and hopes to earn a scholarship as a feature twirler in college.

I asked my mom if I could have the water baton, and she said yes. I taught myself some tricks with it and then I asked for a real baton.

“I asked my mom if I could have the water baton, and she said yes,” Hopmann said. “I taught myself some – Anita Hopmann ’18 tricks with it and then I asked for a real baton. I was able to do more with the real one. Then I asked to get a coach and we found a studio, and it kind of went from there. I never expected it to go this far.” Hopmann entered her first competition season in the spring of 2013, as a seventh grader, and was excited when she was able to take the next step and further her skills as a field twirler at St. Pius X. She is a member of the Panther band and as its feature twirler, functions as her own choreographer and coach. Outside of SPX, Hopmann won first place at the Marching Auxillaries (M.A.) Regional Solo Competition in February and tied for first place overall in her twirling solo category at the M.A. National Competition in March. In January, at the Winter Twirling Festival in Conway, Ark., she placed first in basic strut, x-strut, solo, 3-baton, and the all-around competition (titled the pageant), second in baton, and fourth in modeling/interview. At the 44th Annual Dallas Twirling Festival, Hopmann earned first place in basic strut, second in 3-Baton, third in open solo, fifth in open x-strut, and second in pageant solo. Hopmann’s competition season continued through the summer months. “The atmosphere of the studio I originally found made me want to take it to the next level,” Hopmann said. “I made a lot of friends and I joined team twirling. I do solo competitions now, but the fact that it clicked really well with me and I had all my coaches and friends there to help me grow, made it a lot of fun.” When she is not twirling, Hopmann is an honor student who is also involved in Theater SPX. She grew up acting and aspires to make a career in it.

THEATRE PIPPIN Long before “Wicked,” Stephen Schwartz had his first Broadway hit with “Pippin” - a musical about one young man’s journey to become extraordinary. Pippin, played by Nathan Murphy, goes through a number of experiences during this quest to find his “corner of the sky.” Meeting a widow with a farm and a young son unexpectedly turns Pippin's head around. Will he choose a happy but simple life? Or will he risk everything for a singular flash of glory? Pippin also featured Graham Bryant as Charlemagne, Kathleen Blute as Fastrada and Dylan Lambert as Leading Player.

LEADING LADIES The limited-seating production of “Leading Ladies” was a comedy play about two down-on-their-luck Shakespearean actors, Jake (David Warner) and Leo (Graham Bryant). The two decide to impersonate a pair of "long lost" British nephews who stand to inherit a fortune when their wealthy aunt dies. When they arrive in Amish country in York, Pa., they learn the relatives they need to impersonate are not nephews, they are nieces. Romantic entanglements and more ensue, asking the question, “How far would you go for three million dollars?” Also featured in the cast was Amelia Markantonis as Meg. PIUS NEWS | Summer 2015

INTRODUCING THE VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN OF THE CLASS OF 2015 ASHLEY MARIE HOLT - Valedictorian What college/university do you plan to attend in the fall? Texas A&M University

What do you plan to study in college and beyond? As I go on to attend Texas A&M, I will be studying biomedical engineering. I hope that as I learn in this field I will be able to make a positive difference in other people's lives. That may lead me to a career in medical research, breaking down the mysteries of the human body, a career in industry, creating the technologies to solve medical problems, or a career as a doctor, helping individual patients. There are many options, but I am approaching the future with an open mind.

In what way did you serve the community? I was very involved in church activities including: SHINE Catholic Work Camp - a week of volunteer service with my church youth, Dominican Sisters Summer Camp at Circle Lake - a camp counselor for six girls for a week, Altar Serving - at my home parish St. Martha Catholic Church, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion - at SPX my senior year.

What organizations were you involved with at school? President of National Honor Society, Choir – President of Campus Singers, Vice President of Honor Board, Student Council, district and state qualifier for Academic Team, state qualifier for Handbell Choir, Theater SPX, International Thespian Society, Spring Football Athletic Trainer, girls soccer, International Club and Best Buddies.

Were there any teachers or other people in your life who helped you or inspired you during high school? Many of my teachers and the administration at St. Pius X had a huge impact on my education. Each of them was there to support and encourage me when I faced my most difficult struggles, but they also had individual impacts. Some inspired within me a love for literature (that I didn't know I had); some encouraged my adventurous inquiry in the fields of science; some nourished my love for math; some taught me the beauty of faith; some taught me the intricacies of leadership; and some strengthened my passion for the arts. They have helped me to be the best I can be. I also could not have made it through my four years without the support of my parents and my two sisters. My family helped me through those nights when I had to stay up working on a project or the mornings when I didn't think I could drive to school. They read my college essays and stayed home with me when I was sick. They were always there to help me when I needed it most. Together, both my family and my teachers made my high school career possible, but not only that, they made it extraordinary.

What advice would you share with younger students? I would tell younger students: "always give your best, and strive to be the best version of yourself."

What are your hopes and dreams for the future? I dream of making a medical discovery. However, whether through medical research or community involvement, I want to make a positive impact on other people's lives.

AROUND CAMPUS

JENNIFER MARIE SHEEREN - Salutatorian What college/university do you plan to attend in the fall? Vanderbilt University

What do you plan to study in college and beyond? I plan on majoring in special education with a specialty in multiple and severe disabilities. From there, I am not certain what path within the special needs community I will pursue, but my ultimate goal would be to help children with severe disabilities in orphanages in third world countries.

In what way did you serve the community? I volunteered extensively at Avondale House - a school for children and adults with severe autism. I also volunteered with Camp Blessing Texas for 200 hours.

What organizations were you involved with at school? I am the founder and president of the Best Buddies Chapter at St. Pius X, and am also involved with Science Club, Energy Team, Honor Board, Rugby, Student Council, National Honor Society, Triathlon Club, Retreat Team, and was the school mascot, Beppo.

Were there any teachers or other people in your life who helped you or inspired you during high school? I had so many incredible teachers who dedicated their lives to engaging their students and bringing the curriculum to life, and one of these teachers is Mrs. Dattilo. Mrs. Dattilo was my sophomore English teacher and her passion for teaching was obvious. Our relationship continued and senior year, when I started the Best Buddies Chapter, I asked Mrs. Dattilo to be the sponsor and she graciously accepted. Mrs. Dattilo put all of her faith and trust in me, she never attempted to reign in my zeal for Best Buddies (which often led to lofty ideas and proposals), but she encouraged me. Without Mrs. Dattilo, Best Buddies would not have been as large a success as it was. She is a truly amazing teacher and role model.

What advice would you share with younger students? I would say, explore your interests. Do not let anyone’s ‘expectations’ tie you down to a certain area. Find what you love doing and do it! High school is really about learning to learn and starting to discover who you are as a person, so do not let failures bring you down— the path to self-discovery is paved with failure; embrace it.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future? To help improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and to be happy! PIUS NEWS | Summer 2015

PANTHER ATHLETICS ADDS LACROSSE St. Pius X High School announced the addition of girls and boys lacrosse as varsity sports in the spring of 2015. The addition of both programs increases the number of sports offered at St. Pius X to 23. "We are very excited to bring lacrosse to SPX," said Athletic Director Jason Kimball. "Increasing opportunities for our students is always very gratifying, especially introducing both programs at the same time. By adding lacrosse at this juncture, we are showing our vision of remaining at the forefront of private school athletics in Houston." Boys lacrosse will be headed by Dr. Matthew Carr, who has coached lacrosse in Houston for over 17 years. Carr was the defensive coordinator for Strake Jesuit lacrosse for the first four years of the program, winning a pair of Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) state championships and two THSLL regional titles. Carr then took over the Stratford program and guided the Spartans to two regional championships. Most recently, Carr was the head coach of the 2014 Portuguese

National Team in Denver, and he founded the Houston Saints – a youth lacrosse program for Catholic middle school boys. "I'm extremely excited to become part of the St. Pius X community and I'm very thankful for this great opportunity," said Carr. "I am looking forward to building the Panther lacrosse program." Another integral member of the boy's staff is assistant coach Miguel San Juan. A former TSHLL all-state goalie and state champion, he has coached in Houston for over seven years, most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at St. Thomas High School. Taking the reins of the girls program is Caroline McLean – six-year varsity head coach at Bellaire High School and former JV coach at Kingwood High School. McLean was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and played lacrosse at St. Margaret's School for Girls in Scotland. She is actively involved in the Houston lacrosse scene as a member of the Houston Board of Officials and as the Officials Trainer for seasoned officials.

"I see a bright future for lacrosse at St. Pius X," said McLean. "I like a challenge and we will work hard to be competitive with the more established high school lacrosse programs out there. I'm a firm believer in having fun and working hard at the same time." While both teams participated in scrimmages this past spring, Panther lacrosse is expected to have a full season of competition in the 2015-16 school year. Lacrosse was the first sport added at SPX since wrestling in 2011-12.

GOLFERS FINISH TOP 10 AT STATE Stewart shot a two-under-par 70 to take home the boys regional title, and tied for ninth overall at districts to earn all-district honors. After earning all-district and all-region honors two consecutive seasons, Rachel Hardy finished 10th at state to received all-state honors for the second year in-a-row. She shot 171 (84-87) and competed against 45 golfers. The girls team, consisting of Lacey Hardy, Macie Mateja, Ashley Solorio, Hollan Hall and Hardy, finished eighth overall at state. "The girls team enjoyed their trip to state, gained valuable experience and friendships, and were excited and proud to represent St. Pius X," said Jim Hardy. "Rachel played well with the exception of never figuring out the bumpy greens." For the second straight year, St. Pius X juniors Kade Stewart and Rachel Hardy finished in the top 10 and earned all-state honors at the TAPPS State Golf Championship. Stewart, a three-time state qualifier and two-time regional golf champion, finished third in a field of 41 of the best TAPPS 5A golfers in the state. He shot 149 (76-73). "After day one, Kade was 4 shots back and within striking distance in sixth position," head coach Jim Hardy said. "He played super on day two with a 30 degree drop in temperature and gusty winds. He hit it well enough to comeback from the 4-shot deficit, but could not get any putts to drop."

Hardy earned her second straight district title by scorching the field by 13 strokes. She reeled in the regional championship with a 78. "I have to say that watching Rachel play at regionals from tee to green was exactly like watching a DI college player, only better," said Jim Hardy. "Rachel's steady ball striking is tough for anyone to hang with at this level." Despite cutting its score by 30 shots on day two at regionals, the boys team fell short of qualifying for state. The boys squad included Stewart, Grant Gunter, Sam Vitulli, Frank Luciano and Anthony Solorio.

"I would like to extend my thanks to Coach Kimball and Coach Carr for trusting me to fill the shoes as head boys basketball coach at St. Pius X," Scott said. A word we speak about often is competing, and that is what we will continue to do with me as head coach.

"Coach Scott is a great fit to lead our program, Kimball said. "He is an SPX guy who has been part of our program and community. He will continue the winning tradition that Coach Carr has already established for Panther boys basketball." As the junior varsity coach for the 2014-15 season, Scott finished with a 24-2 record. Prior

"My goal is to continue to build the great tradition and school pride that already exists here in the SPX community. I am ready to lead and guide this basketball team with everything that I have in order to enhance the skills we already possess."

Scott graduated from Texas Southern University with master's and bachelor's degrees in child and family development. Carr has accepted a head coaching job at his alma mater, Guntersville High School in Alabama. "With Coach Scott at the helm, St. Pius X is in great hands," Carr said. "He is a great leader and a great coach. I know he will take the program even farther over the next few years. "I am very saddened to leave St. Pius X. SOFTBALL EARNS DISTRICT CROWN; ADVANCES TO STATE TOURNAMENT The TAPPS District 3-5A champion St. Pius X softball team returned to the state final four this season for the first time since 2012. A regular at the state tournament for five straight years, 2008-2012, and six consecutive years from 1986-1991, SPX reached the 2015 final four by defeating Parish Episcopal 9-7 in the regional round and by crushing Dallas Bishop Dunne 12-1 in the first round. The Panther’s 2015 district title marks its third in the last four years. "We were third in the district last year. All-District First Team Donovan Malone – Freshman Forward Christopher East – Senior Midfielder Kosta Vastakis – Senior Goalkeeper

A 2009 St. Pius X graduate and former soccer standout, Nick Merricks returned to his alma mater as the head boys soccer coach this past season, and made an immediate impact on the program. In 2014-15, the Panthers clinched a share of the TAPPS 3-5A district crown, a feat that had not been accomplished since 2006, advanced to the regional round of the playoffs, and finished 20-4 overall and 7-1 in district play. SPX boys soccer notched just three wins the previous season.

"We were 3-18 last year with essentially the same line-up," Merricks said. "I have to give credit to our seniors. We had a brand new coaching staff and changed everything, but the seniors trusted us. They gave 100 percent effort every day in practice and it paid off." In the first round playoff game, the Panthers defeated Monsignor Kelly 2-0 with goals from freshmen Donovan Malone and Nicolas Medina. Senior goalkeeper Kosta Vastakis made nine saves in the win. The boys fell in the regional round 3-1 to the eventual state champion El Paso Cathedral.

Merricks said returning to SPX has been a dream. "The school has welcomed me back with open arms," he said. "Everything seems so familiar and comfortable. It's great being in a place that you love.” The Panthers also captured two tournament championships in 2014-15 – at St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio and at the St. Louis Soccer Showcase, in Lake Charles, La. The top scorer for SPX was freshman midfielder/forward Donovan Malone and the assist leader was senior midfielder Christopher East.

BIG TURNOUT FOR BLOOD DRIVE IN HONOR OF BRIAN WISNOSKI ‘98

O

n Saturday, June 27, St. Pius X alumni, family and friends came together in the Herzstein Gym in support of one of our own, Dr. Brian Wisnoski ’98. Sixty Panthers signed in for the blood drive and over 40 were successful givers, providing donations that can save up to 174 lives. A broad range of alumni participated – from the classes of 1961 through 2012. Young alumni families brought their children and many families toured the School while waiting to donate. Volunteers provided barbecue, snacks, desserts and soft drinks for participants, as well as t-shirts and aprons from the Leather Apron Foundation (LAF) – a local non-profit organization in which Wisnoski is vice president. Wisnoski had an extensive surgery earlier this year to remove a cancerous tumor. His battle with cancer began in 2010 and he had been in remission until 2014. He is part of a long line of Panthers including parents Debbie and Mark Wisnoski ‘75/’74, sister Megan ’12, and wife Jackie Grahmann Wisnoski ’97. The blood drive was organized by Theresa and Tiger Baranowski ‘79/’81 and supported by the Leather Apron Foundation.

BASKETBALL AND SOCCER ALUMNI RETURN TO CAMPUS It’s a scene that only happens once a year, when Panther basketball and soccer alumni return to campus to play in their respective alumni games in January. Many former SPX girls and boys basketball players teamed up in the Herzstein gym and played half-court contests on each end before stretching out for a full-court game.

The former girls and boys soccer players competed against the current varsity teams on a cool evening at Parsley Field. The alumni games are always a great time to reunite and reminisce with old friends and teammates. St. Pius X would like to thank all alumni who were in attendance.
