FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
We are Veritas men and women. We ignite the spirit of truth and justice.
J
une 1, 2017, marked the anniversary of my first year as Head of School at St. Pius X High School. It was a year of discovery—of being immersed in the traditions of our School, celebrating our Dominican heritage in our Jubilee year and, more importantly, getting to know and fully enjoy the SPX community. Along the way, I’ve experienced the joy of new lives being born into the families of our faculty and staff, the loss of beloved parents and alumni, the thrill of winning academic and athletic teams and pride in high-achieving students. I’ve found that at the heart of all that we do and who we are at St. Pius X High School, is a spirit of Veritas. As you will discover in the pages of this issue of Pius News, SPX students—present and past—model Veritas men and women: Nina Martinez ’19, who founded the Students Serving Soldiers club and organized two clothing drives this year for homeless veterans, our Boy Scouts striving
to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, while beautifying our campus, John Cronin ’18, who has participated in the MS150 in support of his aunt since he was 12. You will meet Cody Graham ’17, Mr. Panther and Gerald Schattle ’62, the 2017 Torchbearer of Truth— two fine examples of Veritas men. You will also find the spirit of Veritas embracing the playing field, as our rugby team raised more than $5,000 for tuition assistance. The close of the school year is a bittersweet moment, one of celebration but also a time of saying goodbye. We bid adieu to 172 members of the Class of 2017, who in true Dominican fashion, exceeded their Christian Service Learning requirements by 2,000 hours—and earned a record $12 million in scholarships. We also said farewell to three beloved faculty and staff members who retired in June: Chip Burgin, Trudie Dattilo and Sharon Salerno, each of whom modeled Veritas and who touched the lives of a generation of young Panthers.
In the poignant reflections offered by their peers at their retirement party, we were reminded that a Veritas life is always lived in relationship and service to others. Summer is upon us and the campus is now quiet. Teachers are enjoying a welldeserved rest and staff are preparing for the coming academic year, a year that will see changes in our academic life, in our faculty and staff and in our student population. As has been the case for the last 60 years, the St. Pius X High School community will remain Veritas men and women. In Veritas,
Carmen Garrett Armistead Head of School

SPX CELEBRATES FINE ARTS AT PILLARS SOCIETY RECEPTION
We believe every student has a special gift. On an evening in February at St. Pius X High School, the talents and creations of our students were brought to life and filled our hallways at the annual Pillars Society Reception. “An Evening of Fine Arts” began with cocktails and conversation in the Black Lobby. Members of the Pillars Society then strolled down the main hallway where students in our fine arts program created vibrant expressions of sight and sound as they displayed their God-given gifts. The reception continued with light hors d’oevres on center stage in the auditorium. Student art, photography and writing was displayed while Theatre SPX, band and choir performed throughout the evening. The Pillars Society honors members of the St. Pius X community who support the School through leadership gifts of $1,500 or greater to the SPX Fund, capital campaigns, the Gala, tuition assistance, restricted gifts and more. HUNDREDS DESCEND UPON AUSTIN FOR Students, faculty and staff from St. Pius X High School joined thousands of Catholics from across the state at the Texas Capitol in Austin to promote life, dignity and the common good in the beginning of April. Catholic Advocacy Day included a rally on the Capitol steps with the state's bishops, several of whom addressed the crowds. It is organized by the Texas Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of the Catholic bishops of Texas. Members of the St. Pius X community joined more than 4,000 Catholics from across the state who were registered to participate. The bi-annual rally promotes the Church's values of life, justice, charity and religious freedom to members of the Texas Legislature. His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, the metropolitan archbishop of Galveston-Houston, opened the rally with prayer, calling the faithful to "be the voice of the voiceless" invoking God's blessing upon the efforts that support life, charity to all, welcome to the stranger and religious freedom.
Catholic Advocacy Day
"The pursuit of social justice is integral to our Catholic faith," said Deacon Sam Dunning, director of the Office of Justice and Peace for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. "Advocacy Day provides the Catholic faithful with an opportunity to live out the social mission of the church; to incarnate these teachings in the real world — it is a great opportunity to both learn and live the social teachings of the church."

Scott McClelland, President of HEB was the parade Grand Marshall. St. Pius X also had the opportunity for a featured performance on stage during the Crawfish Festival.
UP WITH PEOPLE BRINGS MUSICAL MESSAGE OF HOPE TO SPX
Some very helpful, curious and talented visitors made their upbeat presence known throughout Houston in mid-April as the Up With People tour came to St. Pius X High School bringing their volunteer and performance spirit with them. This international cast of a 100 young adults, representing 20 different countries — some as far away as Madagascar and Nepal — lived with 43 local host families, many of which were from the St. Pius X community. St. Pius X served as the host site for this organization, first founded in the 1960s. Throughout their stay, Up With People volunteered with community nonprofit organizations and schools, and their Houston visit culminated with a big musical show in the SPX auditorium before embarking on the European leg of their 2017 tour. At SPX, Up With People hosted “Take a Stand” workshops focusing on cultural diversity, awareness and appreciation for 11th and 12th
graders. They also presented a culture fair for our ninth and 10th graders. In addition, sixth and seventh grade students from St. Rose of Lima Catholic School were invited on campus to experience the culture fair. The organization presented their show “The Journey” exclusively for SPX students, faculty and staff, before performing their evening, city-wide production. Up with People exists today to inspire young people to make a difference in their world. It is a global education organization which aims to bring the world together through service and music. The unique combination of international travel, service learning, leadership development and performing arts offers students an unparalleled experience and a pathway to make a difference in the world, one community at a time. PANTHERS ENJOY FOURTH ANNUAL FIELD DAY The Panthers found themselves feeling a little more relaxed this spring after celebrating field day on March 24. For the fourth straight year, St. Pius X students, faculty and staff took a break from academic rigors with a rewarding afternoon of fun games and activities around campus.
From three-legged races to four square, tug-of-war to softball toss, a 50-yard dash to jump rope, there were activities for everyone. This year’s field day ended with the drawing of the SPX Raffle winners in the auditorium, where student Raffle prizes were also awarded.

ST. PIUS X, ST. ROSE STUDENTS SUPPORT VETERANS By Roy N. Kent, rkent@hcnonline.com
Homelessness is a problem for many veterans. They can be couch surfing with friends or family members, living in shelters or on the streets, or simply without a place to stay beyond a month or two. However, thanks to students at St. Pius X High School and St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, having the basic necessities of living is a problem that is being addressed. At the end of March, students at St. Pius X packed a van from the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) through Volunteers of America-Texas. After gathering so many donations including clothes, toiletries, sleeping bags, blankets and backpacks - a second van was needed to help with the overflow of collections. Sophomore Nina Martinez is the president and founder of St. Pius X’s Students Serving Soldiers group. Currently, the group has about 55 members. This was the second such drive to collect items for veterans this year. The first ended in January, with those donations being taken to Killeen, home of Fort Hood.
St. Pius X supports numerous drives in the school - a food drive around Thanksgiving, a toy drive at Christmas and a recent diaper drive, to name a few.
"People just go through dressers and gather items," Martinez said. In the first drive this year, a Boy Scout member "went to his troop leader and they gave us a lot of stuff."
Darryl Harper is the HVRP outreach coordinator in Houston and said he looks forward to partnering with St. Pius X and St. Rose in this community effort.
Not all donations are second-hand goods. "We had a lot of brand new clothes," Martinez said. "Someone brought in a bunch of jeans with tags still on them." For its part, St. Pius X supports the philanthropic efforts of its students. "We are really open to student ideas for new organizations," said Principal Diane Larsen. "They find a sponsor interested in the organization." The support offered by the school includes putting out notices and making announcements, but the students are the ones driving the needs of any particular group.
For his part, Harper is happy to have the donated goods to help out local homeless veterans. There was a returning home event for the veteran population on Saturday, April 1, where the items collected by SPX and St. Rose were available for veterans. HVRP provides a foundation of hope to veterans in the Houston area by offering an array of services including case management, assistance in accessing benefits and services, career counseling, job readiness workshops, job placement assistance, vocational training and a computer resource center. THEATRE
GODSPELL Theatre SPX's production of "Godspell" came to the St. Pius X High School stage March 31-April 1. "Godspell" is a musical in which a group of people share the stories in the gospels with each other through song, dance and acting. With a live rock band on stage for the show, Jairo Suarez '17 played Jesus and Marvin Deaver '18 portrayed John the Baptist/Judas Iscariot. "Godspell" featured the international hit "Day by Day" as well as an eclectic blend of songs ranging from pop to vaudeville, as Jesus' life was played out onstage.
My heart and my spirit soared. My soul was touched in deep and profound ways as I witnessed our students tell a story of faith with such energy and conviction that I was moved to laughter and tears with each line and song. The stage was transformed into a world far beyond SPX; it took us to a place of storytelling at its best. But more than theatre, this was a weekend of preaching and prayer. This was SPX students singing the songs and telling the stories of our faith. This was Dominican. — Carmen Garrett Armistead, Head of School

SERVING OTHERS ONE BICYCLE RIDE AT A TIME By Lauren Friederman
One of rising senior John Cronin’s favorite ways to serve others is on the seat of a bicycle. When he was 12 years old, he made up his mind to participate in the MS150 with his father who had been riding for four years. “He always told me, ‘When I get to be 12, I’m going to do it,’ and I thought, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,’” John’s father, Tom Cronin, said. “Quite honestly, I thought there was very little chance that he could do the training, much less last through two days of the ride, but he did it. I was awestruck. I was just amazed that he could do it at that young of an age.” Since then, John has participated in the MS150 five times to honor his Aunt Lisa. She was diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis in the early '90s.
and see that the people you’re doing this for are still in pain even after your ride is over, that’s the hardest part.” Over the five years John has participated, he raised more than $12,500 for the MS Society. He enjoys serving others, and he hopes the money he raised will help researchers find a cure. “Service really goes hand in hand with each of St. Pius X High School’s pillars,” John said. “I thought to myself, life is really about helping others and it made me really proud to know the small impact I’m making with this ride really does make a difference for someone.” His father Tom Cronin believes the values taught at St. Pius X have instilled in his son a desire to help others. “Service is a big part of the education at St. Pius X. I think something distinctive about the school is that service is really stressed; not only doing the service, but the way they approach it.” Tom said. “I think the challenge is; you want people to get in the habit of doing service because it’s the right thing to do, not because they have to. That’s why I’ve always been so pleased that John keeps wanting to do this ride with me. It would be easy to do something else rather than that for several weeks in the spring.”
For both John and Tom Cronin, one special part of the ride is each other’s company. “My dad is a really motivating person,” John said. “Next week is his 60th birthday, but he’s still doing this ride. Even though we don’t talk all the time, it’s really great to just go for a weekend and do the ride with my dad.” Tom Cronin feels the same about riding with his son.
“Throughout my childhood, I would visit her and every time it would get worse,” John said. “I saw the progression, what it does to a person. I thought, ‘They have to deal with this everyday of their lives,’ and so when I do the ride, whenever I’m in pain, I think about the people with MS that have to deal with it every day.” For John, the hilly terrain near Austin is only one of the challenges of the ride. “I would really love to say the hills are the most challenging part, but I think the most challenging part is probably when you finish the ride and get to see your family again,” John said. “The battle is never over. We can always raise more money, but when you come back
“It’s just a great thing we’re able to do together,” he said. “I look forward to us doing it for a long time.” Although John is going into his senior year at St. Pius X, he plans to continue participating for years to come. “When I go off to college, my dad and I will each train on our own and do the ride as long as I can,” he said. “I love doing the ride. I think it’s one of my best opportunities to help other people.”
THE CARDINAL’S CIRCLE MAKES LASTING IMPACT ON INNER CITY CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
AROUND CAMPUS
By Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston
St. Pius X High School's Cody Graham '17 continues to have a strong affinity for St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, which he attended previously. “I created friendships I still hold close to me today and learned the importance of having a family away from home,” he said of the Inner City Catholic School. “All of the kids, faculty and parents were very supportive at all of the school events. St. Peter is truly a familyoriented environment.” Graham shared his story during a March 30 Dinner of Thanksgiving for The Cardinal’s Circle supporters. Members of The Cardinal’s Circle invest in the lives of Inner City Catholic Schools’ students through an annual commitment of $5,000. Contributions support the needs of each school from tuition assistance to investment in technology, curriculum and quality teachers. St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School is one of 13 Inner City Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Tom Macrini, one of the founding members of The Cardinal’s Circle, introduced Graham at the dinner. “I feel a tremendous amount of pride in seeing what these kids have become as they have grown up, with us being a small part of their success,” he said. Graham boasts a 3.9 GPA and a slew of extracurricular activities under his name. He has been accepted into 35 universities and received more than $1 million in scholarship opportunities. An all-state selection in basketball, he is also looking to continue his athletic career on the collegiate level. “A Catholic education is the best education a child can get,” Graham said. “It gives one an opportunity to strive for academic success, but also pushes them spiritually.” Daniel Cardinal DiNardo celebrated Mass for The Cardinal’s Circle members at St. Mary’s Seminary just prior to the dinner. KTRK’s Chief Meteorologist Tim Heller served as the dinner emcee. Cardinal DiNardo
and Auxiliary Bishop George A. Sheltz also offered remarks about the impact of The Cardinal’s Circle on the various school communities. At the dinner, Graham spoke about an accident several years ago that severely injured his older brother Max. Graham recalls how the St. Peter the Apostle community supported his family through this challenging time. “With the help of great doctors, prayer and countless number of therapy sessions, Max was walking again in less than a year,” Graham said. “There is something to be said for the power of prayer. Ever since that moment, I have known St. Peter would always be my home and I wanted nothing less than that from a high school and that is what Pius has given me.” Graham said he recognizes that all children do not have these opportunities and thanked The Cardinal’s Circle members for “granting many families (their) wishes and giving them the financial support necessary to attain and a great, well-rounded education.” During her “State of the Schools” address at the dinner, Dr. Julie Vogel, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese, relayed accounts of her interactions from both students and parents in recent years. She read correspondence from some of these individuals, each offering overflowing and profound gratitude for receiving the gift of a Catholic school education. “While we are always striving to improve and advance the whole Inner City Catholic Schools group, it’s the individual stories that exemplify why we treasure our Inner City Catholic Schools,” Vogel said. “I pray that you see every day in our students the next generation of men and women for others, using their God-given gifts and talents, developed in our schools, to make the world a better place for all of us.” “When you give to our Inner City Catholic Schools, you are investing in young men and women and the people who are committed to educating them.”

BOY SCOUTS BEAUTIFY SPX By Lauren Friederman
RETIREES HONORED FOR YEARS OF SERVICE Three members of the St. Pius X High School family were honored for their years of service at a special ceremony on May 30. The group combined for over 47 years of work for St. Pius X. Social studies teacher Chip Burgin (17.5 years), English teacher Trudie Dattilo (9 years) and counseling office administrative assistant Sharon Salerno (21 years) retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year. Laughter and tears filled the room as emcees, Gary West and Victor Takacs, led the Hall of Fame-like ceremony to honor the retirees. Each was awarded Hall of Flame awards after a fellow colleague reflected on their accomplishments, both humorous and sincere. The retirees were then able to give their acceptance speeches. The celebration was attended by SPX faculty and staff, and family and friends of the retirees.
F
or Carmen Garrett Armistead, St. Pius X High School’s Head of School, the connection between achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and Veritas values is obvious. To her, the Boy Scouts who have completed projects at St. Pius X have done more than just fulfill the requirements of their projects. They’ve embodied the values of true Veritas men. “They’ve been able to say, ‘These things go hand in hand, they’re not exclusive.’ They talk about hard work,” Armistead said. “They talk about looking at the needs of a community and then meeting those needs, finding a way to make that community better because of their presence. That’s the benefit that I see for partnering with the kids here that are also Scouts, the Veritas men and women, and giving them a platform on which to create their projects.” Maxwell Idlebird ‘19 and Lucas Woods ‘18 chose to complete their Eagle Scout projects on the SPX campus. “I honestly believe when students get involved with taking care of campus, that campus is a better place simply because there’s a great pride in the campus,” Armistead said. “They then come and look after it to make sure no harm is brought to it. That benefits all of us no matter what we’re doing.” Lucas Woods

AROUND CAMPUS Reflection Garden
For Armistead, the projects completed by both young men are a source of pride. “I’m really proud of them,” she said. “They make me smile. They make my heart happy every time I look at their projects.” She hopes that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on St. Pius X’s campus will continue to serve as examples of what it means to be a Veritas man or woman.
Woods decided to build a reflection garden for his project in order to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. It was an easy decision for him to do his project at St. Pius X. “I chose to do it here because my family has been going here since the school opened,” Woods said. “My grandma and her brothers and sisters and my mom’s side of the family have gone here. Everyone has been coming here since.” In total, Woods spent nearly 200 hours on his project. “It took months to plan,” he said. “I had to go through the whole process with the district board and they made sure everything was perfect before I could do it. “ With the help of 30 volunteers, including Woods’ parents Jeremy ’93 and Lori ’92, and his uncle Eddie Holik ’86, he replanted an area near the Brinkman entrance, adding several new plants, benches and a fountain to beautify the space.
get them to the school. In total, 19 volunteers finished the project in four hours. “I’m proud of myself because of all the effort I put in and what I did for my school,” Idlebird said. His mother was proud of him too, for the leadership qualities he displayed during the project. “Part of this is that he is supposed to show leadership, and he informed me that I was planting incorrectly, that that was not how he wanted this planted,” Ardalia Idlebird said. “I had to take a step back from my role of being mother. He was very polite about it but he just told me ‘That’s not how you plant it.’ I enjoyed that he took leadership in that. Being a leadership figure, he told me, ‘No you’re not doing this correctly,’ and he showed me what I needed to do and, of course, I said ‘Yes sir.’”
“I hope that they will be leaders, not only in their Scout troops, but they will truly be leaders here in the St. Pius X community,” Armistead said. “They walk in many realms here in the SPX community. They’re athletes, artists and musicians. They are great students. They walk throughout the varied halls of this campus, and they give us a chance to say we preach our Dominican message – service to others, service for justice – in whatever organization we’re apart of. Whether we’re a Scout, a teacher or we work for a different nonprofit, if we’re Dominican, we find a way to preach that message wherever we are.” Rooftop Garden

“In my mind, I had the idea that Lucas would clean it out and plant some plants,” Armistead said. “I never envisioned what he had in his mind. He has turned that into a true oasis for us, as has Maxwell with the rooftop garden.” For his Eagle Scout project, Idlebird decided to plant the rooftop garden on the second floor of the Raye G. and Edward P. White Family Center for the Sciences and Media. “Maxwell just took the bull by the horns,” Armistead said. “He walked in there, got his Scout troop together, managed the project, and now we have this wonderfully growing rooftop garden.” For his project, Idlebird researched which plants would do well on the rooftop, and he spent two Saturdays at the nursery picking out the plants. He figured out how much of each of the materials he needed and how to

BOYS SOCCER REACHES STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WITH CINDERELLA PLAYOFF RUN
T
he St. Pius X High School boys soccer team saw the dreams of its players and coach come true this season as it competed for the TAPPS Division I state championship for the first time in school history. Not bad for a team that wasn't ranked all season, placed fourth in District 3 and entered the state finals with a record of 13-13. The Panthers, however, hit their stride during a Cinderella playoff run. In the bi-district round, St. Pius X scored two late goals in the final 12 minutes to edge the No. 2 seed in the San Antonio district,
St. Joseph, 3-2. SPX followed with a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival St. Thomas in the state quarterfinals. The Panthers added a 2-1 win over Antonian in the state semifinals when freshman Abraham Lopez found the back of the net in the first half. Antonian scored the equalizer and eventually sent the game into overtime, but a golden goal from junior forward Nic Medina with only minutes remaining in extra time advanced SPX to the state title game. Although the Panthers finished as the state runner-up to San Antonio Central Catholic,
when asked what it felt like to play for the state championship, third-year head coach Nick Merricks '09 said it felt like a dream come true. "This has been a dream since I was a player here at St. Pius X and to have had an opportunity like this was amazing," Merricks said. "The team had an unbending trust in each other. They believed in the game plan and played until the clock ran out. St. Pius X had an all-state second-team pick in Medina, as well as all-district selections in Medina, Lopez and junior Connor Spiller.

By defeating Foster 11-2 in the regional round of the division III playoffs, Panther lacrosse marked its first playoff win in school history. The program is only two years old. SPX eventually lost a hard fought battle to Emery-Weiner in the semifinals. The Panthers had six players recognized with district honors and each competed in the regional division III all-star game: SPX softball advanced to the TAPPS division I playoffs where they defeated the No. 3 seed out of Dallas, Ursuline Academy, 5-2 before falling to St. Agnes in the regional round. BOYS RUGBY DONATES TO SPX'S STUDENT FINANCIAL AID The St. Pius X High School boys rugby team held a fundraiser at a home match this season and raised $5,281 for student financial aid at St. Pius X. Team captain Parker Johnson and vice-captain Alec Kenda presented the donations to Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead. Panther boys rugby head coach David Selby wanted to help raise money for student financial aid at SPX. He thought a pass-the-hat approach at one of the team's remaining home games would be the way to raise funds. The result was quite successful as the donations far exceeded expectations. "Our goals as coaches of the rugby program have been to develop young, talented rugby players, and to also develop young men," Selby said. "This effort provided an opportunity for them to expand their vision and to see that they are part of something really special here at St. Pius X High School."
PANTHERS EDGE EAGLES IN 2017 For the first time in school history, the St. Pius X boys rugby team defeated St. Thomas 10-0 on Feb. 9 at Granger Stadium. In the first half, the action flowed back and forth with both teams having chances to score, but unable to touch the ball down for a try or slot a penalty kick. With the score knotted 0-0 after 25 minutes, sophomore outside center Bruno Forestieri found a small crease in the STH defense and sprinted through for a try. The conversion kick went wide, but the Panthers maintained a 5-0 lead at the half. The second half started much like the first with both teams wanting to get control of the momentum and the match. As the clock wound down to 7 minutes, Forestieri yet again split the defensive backline. He powered his way in for his second try of the match and eventually sealed the win for SPX. Boys rugby qualified for the playoffs and finished its season with an 8-4 record.

GERALD SCHATTLE ’62 AWARDED TORCHBEARER OF TRUTH
After graduating from St. Pius X High School, Schattle enrolled in the United States Air Force where he served for eight years, only leaving the service to help care for his brother who had been diagnosed with polio. After leaving the military, Schattle served for 26 years in Aldine Independent School District where he taught auto mechanics and maintained the Nimitz High School buses. Following retirement, Schattle began to volunteer his time at SPX driving and maintaining the school buses. Beyond his talents with vehicles, Schattle and his wife, long-time SPX faculty member Bridgette White Schattle ’69, give freely of their time and treasure to St. Pius X. One of the most prominent gifts the Schattle’s have given to the School is the Nativity set that can be seen each year at Christmas in the Black lobby. On Thursday, February 3, the St. Pius X Alumni Board of Directors presented the second Torchbearer of Truth Award to Gerald Schattle ’62. Established in 2015, the Torchbearer of Truth distinguished alumni award is given to a St. Pius X alumnus who serves as an outstanding example of the Four Pillars of the Dominican charism and who has given some measure of their time, talent or treasure to St. Pius X High School. The award was presented to Schattle during a school-wide liturgy for students to witness an example of an engaged and committed alumnus who has given back to SPX and the greater community.
In addition to his generosity, Schattle is probably best known for his work with the students on campus. He is often the first to open the school each day and allow students inside the building. He takes students on field trips to work with Wreaths Across America, honor veterans on Veteran’s Day and honor first responders on the anniversary of September 11. The inaugural Torchbearer of Truth distinguished alumni award was presented to Pat McKenna ’64 in August 2015.

SPX WELCOMES YOUNG ALUMNI FOR CAREER DAY On February 10, St. Pius X welcomed six alumni back to campus to speak to the student body for Career Day 2017. Panther alumni who have reached a high level of success in their chosen field were invited to share their journey from St. Pius X to present day. Participants included Ida Clay ’04 (drama therapist), Zachery Hines ’09 (bioinformatics engineer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center), Hilda Oregon Lease ’96 (president/owner of RODS Subsurface Utility Engineering), Sam Milledge ’00 (managing partner at The Milledge Law Firm, P.L.L.C.), Dr. Renee Lebeuf Zimmerman ’01 (clinical coordinator at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center) and Rick Worley ’95 (engineer at Chevron and owner of Wooster’s Garden and Heights Beir Garten). Clay treated the crowd to an interactive activity that highlighted the power of a group over an individual. Students asked questions that helped them understand the work and commitment it takes to pursue certain careers. We are grateful for the alumni who took time out of their busy schedules to share their insights with SPX students. Zachery Hines '09 and Ida Clay '04
