FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
A
t SPX, we’ve always had phenomenal students. Some of the brightest, most athletic and artistic kids have walked these halls in search of a stellar education and life-long friendships. This past year was no exception – students smashed records, achieved lofty dreams, won it all and nailed the auditions. Let’s look at just a few of our Veritas women and men. One of the first stand out names from the Class of 2019 is Grant Gunnell! Did you know that he shattered three state records his senior year at St. Pius X High School? This fine example of an SPX man never hesitates to share the credit for these accomplishments with his team. He is an upstanding friend, teammate, leader and student, and we are so blessed to call him one of ours! We wish him the very best as he takes the field in Arizona! Our next stellar student has been known by many names this past year past year – Kate, Anne and… the baker’s wife? Well, she is best known as Allison Smith, but she’s starred in so many of our Theatre SPX productions, that she is renowned among the student population at SPX and area middle schools, and within the community. This fall, Allison will spread her wings and take on a new role – St. Edwards University student. We’re sad to lose such a talented, leader with a heart of gold, but excited to see what the next scene holds for her. And who can forget Jacob Schmalz? He, too, is an athletic powerhouse lending his talents to the lacrosse field. But, Jacob is far more than simply an athlete. In 2018, Jacob organized an event, Operation in Your Honor, to honor homeless veterans and allow them a way to connect with each other to form emotional and social support. The event was completely orchestrated by students under Jacob’s guidance. With his leadership, followthrough and heart, it’s no wonder he achieved his dream of gaining acceptance to the Air
Force Academy. Jacob started this fall on his way to a degree in aerospace engineering.
Parks, Jenelle Pinnock, Krista Reyes, Jayme Thompson, Breah Tyler and Ashlyn Urias.
Our Veritas men and women shine in all arenas of school life. Nathan Skouby, like both Grant, and Jacob, excelled in athletics – always putting his best food forward for the cross country, track, baseball and swimming teams. And like many others of his peers, Nathan is a leader. He served as president of National Honor Society and on Students Serving Soldiers, and Honor Board. He is also a scholastic leader. He served as valedictorian for the 2019 class. Nathan was named a commended student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students place among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Another stand out TAPPS routine was performed by the Winter Guard duet, Kate Mytchak and Hannah Sebesta. This amazing duo received a superior rating and were awarded National Champions in their category. Additionally, the entire Winter Guard group was awarded a superior rating and placed eighth in their category. Congratulations to Kate, Hannah, Claire Carbajal, Kendahl Haltiwanger, Alyssa Havens, and Shelbie Kay.
Our wonderful dance team – the Pantherettes – have taken their performance to a new level! During the 2018-2019 year at the TAPPS competition, the team scored 92 out of 100 for both their kick and hip hop routines. Additionally, Jaiden Jefferson was awarded first team, Tatiana Queffelec was named second team and Paola Gonzalez was awarded honorable mention. Congrats to these three ladies and the rest of the team Katelyn Banks, Kayla Clayton, Katila Dias, Miranda Medina, Haley
These are just a small representation of the outstanding Veritas men and women who I am blessed to work with on a daily basis. I would love to share more information about each and every student who walks our halls, but I don’t have nearly enough room! These kids are why our faculty and staff show up every day – to watch these young Veritas men and women learn, grow and become the leaders and scholars they are meant to be. In Veritas,
Carmen Garrett Armistead

COMMUNITY MOURNS THE LOSS OF A PANTHER
We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of former SPX football coach, athletic director and alumnus, Robin Kirk '72. Coach Kirk was an integral part of St. Pius X High School football history. As a student, he won two state titles as a defensive tackle in 1970 and 1971. He returned to his alma mater as the defensive coordinator and won three more titles in 1976, 1977 and 1978. Coach Kirk became a police officer, retiring after 20 years, and returning to St. Pius X in 1999 as head coach and athletic director. He won another state title in 1999 and two more in 2006 and 2007. But Coach Kirk was more than his victories; he was a great role model and educator to our Veritas men and women. He taught them how to walk off the field – win or lose – with grace and humility. Coach Kirk’s family ties run deep within the St. Pius X community. His older sister +Walta graduated in 1970, and two younger brothers, Walter and James graduated in 1975 and 1976 respectively. His children Brandon (2002) and Samantha (2010) are alums as well.
His is a presence that will truly be missed.

All Star Grant Gunnell Breaks State Records This past season, quarterback Grant Gunnell '19 memorialized one of the greatest high school careers in the history of the Lon Star State. He became Texas' all-time leader in career passing yards, earned the scoring tosses record and set the state's all-time scoring record. “It took an amazing amount of commitment from my parents, coaches and teammates to allow me to break so many records,” Gunnell said. “It takes a team to make all this happen, and they’re amazing.” Gunnell, who's led the SPX varsity squad since the end of his freshman year in 2015, became a University of Arizona Wildcat in January of 2019. Congratulations to Grant, the players, coaches, parents, teachers and leaders who have all made their mark throughout the years on these unforgettable moments in Texas sports history!

JOHN T. MCMAHON TEACHING CHAIR RECIPIENT KIMBERLY PHILLIPS HOLIK '91 Garnering the attention of students with a smile, a heart-felt laugh, and a gently exuberant “okay, let’s go,” Kimberly Holik’s success lies in her ability to engender positive relationships with students, parents, and her peers. She creates a classroom infused with discovery, investigation and a thirst for knowledge. Kim is a force for good, not only in the lives of students, but in the lives of the entire St. Pius X community. She has the priceless gift of dynamically engaging with students and ultimately enhancing her students’ love of learning. Her innate ability to relate to and genuinely enjoy and understand her students, to break complicated learning into discreet understandable components, to create experiments and utilize real life examples in the classroom – and then reflect upon her learner’s success and the authentic part that she plays in that is the reason she is a success both in and
out of the classroom. Whether burning money or chemically changing the color of fire, Holik somehow manages to capture the attention and curiosity of those who are blessed to call her teacher. She inspires her students to dig deeper and to connect the science of the classroom with the science of life. She is a teacher who builds community and teaches leadership – because this is who she is – a leader and a builder. Students and teachers alike have been in her fishbowl, acted goofy with her games, and felt appreciated by her generous creativity. Kim has been a Panther since birth – the daughter of two SPX alumni (Denise Derkowski '72 and Terry Phillips '72), the wife of an SPX alumnus (John Holik '84), and the mother of two SPX alumnae (Madison Holik '17 and Alyssa Holik '18), her life has revolved around her family’s
backyard – under the shade of St. Pius X High School. None were surprised to learn that this teacher was voted Most Friendly by her senior class in 1991. For the past 14 years St. Pius X students have called her amazing and the teacher who impacts lives; she is a friend, teacher, colleague and SPX's very own cheerleader. Holik’s calm demeanor, unparalleled school spirit, ability to move mountains with an easy “we can do this,” and family-filled presence has made St. Pius X High School a better place – because she is one of us.
RETIREES HONORED FOR YEARS OF SERVICE Two of the most tenured members of the St. Pius X High School family were honored for their years of service at a special ceremony on May 30. Paul and Mary Gagne were bid a fond farewell and thanked for their combined 50 plus years of service to SPX. Theology teacher, Paul (26 years) and English teacher Mary (26 years) retired at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. Retirees posed with Principal Diane Larsen, Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead and Office for Campus Ministry Director Patrick Spedale. Both were honored with colleagues sharing heart-felt and humorous reflections of their accomplishments and a retelling of their fairy tale romance as told by Gary West and Victor Takacs. The celebration was attended by SPX faculty and staff, and family and friends of the retirees.

Through the generosity of our benefactors, St. Pius X supports our students through scholarships. Annually, at our underclass awards ceremony, SPX students are presented with numerous awards.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Standing Ovation Award The Standing Ovation Scholarship was established to promote awareness of the importance and benefits of theater arts for our students. This scholarship rewards a student for ommitment to the Theatre SPX program. The recipient has shown great dedication not only to the theater program at St. Pius X High School, but to his/hers classmates and cast mates. They possess a strong work ethic, a willingness to go above and beyond to assure the success of a production, and most importantly an unwavering positive attitude. These qualities in the recipient contribute too many successful productions that hundreds of people experience and enjoy. Congratulations to Aslan Tucker, pictured with Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead, Theatre Director Gloria Fant, Theatre Technical Director Ashley Fant, and Principal Diane Larsen. Angelo Palazzolo '70 Memorial Scholarship We remember another St. Pius X student—one from another era, yet who continues to influence the School 49 years after his graduation: Angelo Palazzolo, valedictorian of the class 1970. Angelo was a supportive alumnus, giving generously to his alma mater throughout his life. Upon his death in May 2002, Angelo bequeathed a generous gift to the School. In addition, he left instructions with his family that a significant portion of his estate was to be given to St. Pius X High School. With the assistance of school administrators and the St. Pius X Foundation, the family was able to fulfill his wishes. Angelo’s gift and endowment were deposited into the St. Pius X High School Foundation endowment fund in order to create the Angelo Palazzolo Memorial Scholarship. It is a perpetual scholarship administered by the St. Pius X Foundation, and awarded annually at the spring awards ceremony. A strong advocate of Dominican education, Angelo credited St. Pius X with providing much of the foundation for his later successes. In a letter which he left for his family, he wrote: “It is my sincere wish that I lived long enough to use up all my money…But if there is some left, I would rather I had some say in who gets it….I think St. Pius X was the best school in Houston when I went there. When I left high school I was at least two semesters ahead of other people in college. They gave me a good education, sound in the fundamentals of math, science, and business, and based on Catholic doctrine. They were four wonderful years for me. I hope the school continues to operate for a long time and maybe this money will help some kid who really needs it…” The Angelo Palazzolo Memorial scholarship as been awarded for eleven years. Thanks to Angelo’s generosity, since its inception, including this year’s awards, a total of 40 scholarship has been granted. Congratulations to Oluwakorede Cardozo (not pictured), Gabrielle Gibson, McKenna Capitaine, and Mauro Cisneros, pictured with Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead, Vincent Palazzolo, Pat Svrcek, Jim Palazzolo and Principal Diane Larsen.
Beth Black Memorial Scholarship
AROUND CAMPUS
The Beth Black Memorial Scholarship was established in November 2017 to honor the life of Beth Black, mother of St. Pius X High School alumni Andrew Black '05 and Adam Black '07 and wife of longtime SPX Foundation Board President Jim Black. Beth was a dedicated SPX volunteer who spent countless hours working many parent association events, and providing meals and snacks for the football coaches and players at their practices and games. Beth also actively lent her time and support to the annual St. Pius X High School Foundation Gala. Her love of St. Pius X High School was ever present. The Beth Black Memorial Scholarship honors a rising Senior who has worked hard in the classroom, excelled in co-curricular activities or athletics and has exemplified the true meaning of being a Veritas man or woman. Congratulations to recipient Jacob Hernandez, pictured with Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead and Principal Diane Larsen.
Zinni-Reed Family Scholarship The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was felt not only in New Orleans but also hundreds of miles away, as St. Pius X High School welcomed over 100 students and their families who had fled the ravages of the storm. Among those were Sue and Ed Zinni and their son, Daniel. When the family first arrived in Houston, they experienced for the first time what it is like to experience an uncertain future. They found at SPX a community that was not only accepting but also that provided all they needed to live here. Fortunately, the Zinni’s found their Louisiana home in relatively good shape, but they ultimately chose to settle in Houston. SPX was a perfect fit for Daniel—a self-described techie and member of the Class of 2008—who was accepted by all students. The family hoped when the time was right to repay what they had received from St. Pius X. In the spring of 2013, they established the ZinniReed Family Scholarship, benefiting students from middle class families struggling to provide an SPX education for their children. Mrs. Zinni has noted, "Our son's years at SPX were filled with many positive and rewarding experiences, and he received a well-rounded, quality education. We created this scholarship so that other students could have these same opportunities." Congratulations to three-time recipient Adam Anderson and first-time recpient Samantha Fox, pictured with Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead and Principal Diane Larsen. Class of 1968 Scholarship The Class of 1968 scholarship was established in honor of their 50th high school reunion. Members of the class wanted to show their appreciation to their alma mater by awarding four scholarship to students who exemplified what it means to be a Veritas man or woman. Congratulations to recipients Marc Cabrera, Roy Sanchez, Tea Arvizu and John Mason Jefferson, pictured with Head of School Carmen Garrett Armistead, Stan and Luanne Jankowski '68/'68, Humphrey and Linda Hughes '68/'68 and Principal Diane Larsen.

Tennis The men’s tennis team represented SPX well, finishing out the season 3rd in district singles. After a strong performance in April’s district tournament, freshman Jefferson Page became the first to represent SPX at the TAPPS State meet in quite some time. Jefferson stood out as a competitor, winning
six junior open singles titles and one junior open doubles title, while still managing his role on the SPX roster. He also finished in 2nd place in a Super Champ Major Zone doubles tournament.
Track & Field The SPX varsity track team was small in numbers but powerful. The girls won the Fort Bend Christian meet this season, placing 1st out of 18 teams. At the District meet, girls returned home with medals in the following events: 4x100 relays (silver), 4x200 relay (gold), 100 (silver), 200 (bronze), 400 (silver & bronze), 100H (bronze), and the 300H (bronze). Boys returned home with medals in the 4X100 relay (bronze), 4X200 relay (gold), 200 (bronze), and 400 (silver). As these athletes moved on to compete at the Regional meet in Bastrop, they proved their season was not over. The track team brought home several medals in the following events: Girls; 4x100 relay (silver), 4x200 relay (gold), 300H (bronze) and Boys: 4x200 relay (gold). There were several athletes who finished in 4th that also advanced to the state meet in Waco. Once at state, Panthers competed with vigor and had a good showing, earning medals in the girls 4x100 relay (bronze) and 4x200 relay (silver). A number of track athletes broke several school records this season: Girls 4x100 relay (Ana LeBlanc, Babette Bright, Kaylee Moses, Kelsey Scott) 49.05, Girls 4x200 relay (Ana LeBlanc, Kelsey Scott, Kaylee Moses, Babette Bright) 1:43.23, and Girls 400M (Kelsey) 59.12. Academic All-State: Jaiden Jefferson, Kelsey Scott, Chad Graham.

ANNUAL GIVING Pillars This year, the annual Pillars Society Reception’s theme was “Panthers Past, Present and Future”. Attendees were walked through a virtual time capsule, seeing photos from the day the school opened in 1956, through each decade and up to present time. Current student Christine Dau ’21 gave a compelling speech about how money donated to SPX has made possible her attending this great school. Finally, attendees heard from Head of School Carmen Armistead on the future of SPX as the school begins planning for the next 20 years in a new master plan. The Pillars Society honors members of the St. Pius X community who support the School through leadership gifts of $1,500 or greater to the SPX Fund, capital campaigns, the Gala, tuition assistance, restricted gifts and more. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Pillars Society, please contact Director of Advancement Monica E. Clem at 713-579-7500 or clemm@stpiusx.org.
Cheers to SPX! Between Monday, February 25 and Friday, March 1, 112 alumni gave back $6,915 to the Alumni Tuition Assistance Fund in support of the Cheers to SPX campaign. With a $35 donation, alumni received an exclusive, limited-edition SPX Alumni thermal cup.
The campaign featured a variety of our most tenured employees asking alumni to give back to their alma mater in a fun and exciting way. Mary and Paul Gagne, who retired after 50 years of combined service, reminded their previous students to give so current students could continue to benefit from a top-notch Dominican education. Stay tuned for our next themed alumni giving campaign!
Giving Tuesday/SPX Gives Day Tuesday, November 27, 2018, we kicked off our third annual SPX Gives Day, a 24 hour giving challenge held in tandem with Giving Tuesday, a global charitable initiative that challenges and inspires us to take a moment to give back amidst the chaotic holiday season. During our inaugural SPX Gives Day in 2016 we surpassed our $50,000 goal by more than $20,000. Then, in 2017 we passed our $80,000 goal by raising over $92,000. This year our goal was even more ambitious. But Panthers are ambitious. We challenged our community to raise $100,000 in 24 hours and they responded to our rally cry in droves. To really sweeten the deal, the SPX Board of Trustees generously offered to match dollar for dollar up to $20,000. A total of $120,039 was raised from 361 donors. We are so incredibly grateful to all those who helped us reach this goal and supported the SPX Fund. We can’t wait to see what we accomplish next year!
CARNAVAL CELEBRATES ST. PIUS X FACULTY AND STAFF The St. Pius X Foundation had a little extra reason to celebrate during its annual Gala held on October 13, 2018 at the Westin Galleria. The always exciting event raised more than $375,000 to benefit the Foundation.
much needed renovation of the faculty lounge. The money raised helped create a truly relaxing space for faculty and staff returning for the 20192020 school year.
It was a special night with SPX supporters, friends, current parents and many alumni gathering for a evening filled with food, fun, spirited bidding, music and dancing. For the first time in the Gala’s 24-year history, the St. Pius X High School faculty and staff were presented with the Del Sarto Humanitarian Award. Many guests mixed, mingled and lauded their favorite teachers and staff members. A few former faculty and staff members were even able to partake in the festivities.
Under the guidance of auction chairs, alumnae and current parent Beth Baroski Jez ’89 and past parent Beth Culver, the evening really got going when guests battled to win great packages including a trip to Italy and a VIP experience to see “The King” George Straight at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo. To round out the night guest packed the dance floor to enjoy the musical stylings of Horizon.
Everyone has at least one teacher or staff member that they remember fondly and knows just what an impact that person had on his/her life. That one faculty member who helped lay the foundation to shape the person of today, who helped drive home truths and cast away doubts. Without that person, lives would have traveled vastly different paths. The Gala honored the many SPX faculty and staff members who tirelessly share their passion for language, music, literature, math, science, theater, religion, history, and so many other subjects with SPX students. The countless hours of work put in without the expectation of a much deserved thank you shows their dedication to St. Pius X High School. The Gala celebrated the vital role they play in supporting students and strengthening their future. One of the most moving parts of the evening was when guests lifted their paddles high in the air to donate funds to a

Growing Up Together Not many people can say they have graduated with the same person three times! Anne Marie Noonan '15 and Sam Vitulli '15 have had three graduations together - lower school, high school and college.
SPX 2015
How did your SPX education prepare you for college? Anne Marie: SPX was able to challenge me and lead me to be ready for the academic rigor in college. I was able to use study methods I learned over my four years in high school that helped me be on the deans and presidents list multiple semesters. Sam: It definitely challenged me. It was a good building block for what I would expect in college, specifically in faith education. Going to Benedictine I knew I would be taking theology and having had that background already allowed me to do well in those courses. What is one of the most important lessons you took away from SPX? Sam: SPX will always be family.
Benedictine 2019
Anne Marie: The most important lesson I learned through SPX is not being afraid to speak up and being a good friend. DAVID PIERCE '81 RETURNED TO SPX TO INSPIRE David Pierce '81 visited his alma mater on November 16, as a guest lecturer. He spoke to SPX students about his path from student athlete to national acclaim while imparting insight and wisdom as they decide their next steps in life. Joining Pierce in his visit, was his wife Susan Kubiak Pierce '82. Pierce is Houston raised and current head baseball coach at The University of Texas. He was named the head baseball coach at The University of Texas on June 29, 2016, and in his second season at the helm, was named Baseball America's National Coach of the Year after guiding the Longhorns to a 42-23 record and back to the College World Series for the first time since 2014. With a 17-7 mark in league play, Pierce, who was named the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, led his team to the Big 12 Conference title— the first conference title for Texas since 2011—and hosted both an NCAA Regional and an NCAA Super Regional. In the Austin Regional, the Longhorns went 3-0 with wins over Texas Southern, Texas A&M, and Indiana. In the Super Regional, Texas dropped game one to Tennessee Tech before taking games two and three to send Pierce to Omaha for the first time as head coach. The Longhorns finished ranked in the top eight in every major poll to close out the season and finished first in the nation in double plays (73) and ninth in triples (22).
