FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
I
have had the honor for the past two years to call our community together for the St. Pius X High School Academic Convocation. Our Convocation is a time of setting forth our mission, of giving voice to who we are and what we do. It is a time for us as a community to come together and accept the mission presented to us as a Catholic, Dominican High School in today’s world. As I prepared to convene our faculty, staff and students at the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year, I reflected on what it is that makes us so special – what it is that makes us who we are. The word Veritas kept edging its way into my spirit and mind and I finally realized that the greatest message to be shared was one that told the story of what it means to be Veritas and what it means to choose a life as a Veritas Woman or Man. Being Veritas is what we ask of each and every person – young and old alike – who walk the halls of St. Pius X High School. And, so, I would like to share part of this convocation message with you. The year was 1887. Dominican Sisters hailing from Somerset, Ohio, opened a school in Galveston, Texas, with 13 students – 13 African American students. The first school, on the island, for African American students. The result: these fiercely faithful, tenacious Dominican Sisters were met with curses and hatred – they were yelled at and cursed upon as they walked along those old Galveston streets holding the hands of their young students; they were threatened – told to leave the island, but yet they stood tall and strong. These Dominican women made a choice for the oppressed – they read the signs of the times – they saw what was needed to make their world a better place, and they simply did the right thing. They made a choice to act with wisdom, courage, conviction and compassion. Veritas Women. What will we choose? What are the events happening in our world today – in our school today – that we need to study, face head on, and make the choice to act upon with wisdom, courage, conviction and compassion? Veritas is a constant life calling to search for truth and act with integrity. As Veritas Men and Women we are making the choice to dig deeply inside of who we are and what we do – to search for truth. Being a Veritas Man or Woman is asking – daily – what is it that God is truly calling me
to be? Being Veritas is ultimately being like those Dominican Sisters – standing tall and strong in your knowledge that what you are choosing is right and true because it is what God has asked of you. We are aware we could not accomplish our mission alone. It takes all of our individual God-given gifts to contribute to the success of St. Pius X High School. Through the generosity of alumni, parents past and present, community members, faculty and staff we have been able to make enormous strides in our mission to educate Veritas Men and Women. Just as the Dominican Sisters had the wisdom, courage, conviction and compassion to educate those in need, we hope you will continue to support us as we educate young women and men in the Dominican tradition. Albeit we ended the 2016-2017 school year on a positive note with 172 graduates receiving $12 million in scholarships, it was only a short time later that our community experienced the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Just as our Dominican roots have taught us, our school community stepped up and did the right thing at the right time. We thank God our beloved school escaped any major damage but unfortunately many in our SPX family did not fare so well. Many of the same families who were seriously
affected by Harvey were the first ones to jump in and help those during the darkest of hours. Members of our extended family stood tall and strong and offered a hand however they could. Whether it was reaching out to donate much needed funds or assisting with debris removal and clean up, this was truly a community-driven effort to help those in need. While Hurricane Harvey happened during the 2017-2018 fiscal year, we felt it was absolutely vital to recognize the overwhelming support that St. Pius X High School received from all over the country. Providing everything from gift cards to home goods, school supplies to monetary donations and everything in between, our tight-knit community would not have been able to rebuild without such kindness. We are immensely grateful to those who donated their time, talent and treasure to help the unbearable feel a little more bearable for those who suffered. We are truly a community made up of Veritas Men and Women! In Veritas,

SPX students gathered to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey right here in our own community. Students helped with tearing out damaged walls and floors, debris removal and general clean up. They also took time to pray for those affected by the devestation.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
A
s I reflect upon last year, the words grateful and community come to mind. While the Board has a duty to oversee the school governance, we also share a deep personal connection. Both of my children graduated from St. Pius X, and I am grateful for the unique combination of Dominican Sisters, faculty, staff, coaches, students, parents and alumni that collectively form the St. Pius X community. It is a remarkable place that serves as a catalyst to help each student become the best version of themselves. As the school continues to grow and develop, preserving our strong sense of community is very important to the Board. Through the many individuals who are recognized in the Role of Donors, St. Pius X has been www.stpiusx.org
able to accomplish a significant milestone over the past few years. Our investment in facilities is evident with the Raye G. and Edward P. White Family Center for the Sciences and Media. Since it’s opening, students have been taking advantage of the state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, which has allowed them to match pace with the constantly evolving science field. We are forever grateful for the generosity of the many individuals who have paved the way for school growth. This May, my tenure on the board will conclude after nine years. As my husband and I transition into our family’s next phase, we think about where we will invest our time and our annual giving. I know that St. Pius X will always be at the top of my list for annual giving because of the impact it
has had on my family. I am forever grateful for the St. Pius X community. Please join me in continuing to support St. Pius X High School to ensure its success for generations to come. Sincerely,
