If you are what you should be, you will set the world ablaze! — St. Catherine of Siena

hese words of the great Dominican saint, Catherine of Siena, are woven into the very fabric of life at St. Pius X High School. They serve as the inspiration of our capital campaign; they form part of our charge to graduating seniors each year to live out our mission and the Four Pillars of the Dominican charism. “Setting the world ablaze” also describes the accomplishments of many of our students during the 2013-2014 academic year. It is with great pride that we announce that the Class of 2014 earned over $8 million in scholarships, a 33% increase over the previous year and over $800,000 of that number was earned by students in the Learning for Success program. Ninth grader Kathleen Blute earned first-place honors at the University of St. Thomas/Archdiocesan Essay contest in January from among all of the Catholic High School ninth grade entries. Seven other SPX students earned honors ranging from second place to honorable mention. Our students were on fire on the playing fields and courts this year: Junior Michael Bell won his third straight district championship in boys tennis and Lisette Matta ’16 finished second in district in girls tennis—

both advanced to the state championship. Sophomore Rachel Hardy was selected KPRC Local 2 Athlete of the Week after winning five straight golf tournaments. She went on to win the individual title at the district tournament and finished ninth in a field of 40 of the best TAPPS 5A girls golfers at state. Kade Stewart ’16 finished third in a field of 50 of the best TAPPS 5A boys golfers in the state. He was also an individual district champion. Football was well-represented, as Brian Newman ’14 was named Offensive Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Houston, and Sam Vitulli ’15 was recognized for the Play of the Year by The KUBE Channel 57. SPX team sports shone as boys basketball returned to the Final Four for the first time in seven years and won its second straight district title, and Panther baseball reached the Final Four for the sixth year in a row. Our young artists were not to be excluded from extraordinary accomplishments. The Del Sarto Yearbook took first place at the 2014 TAPPS Academic and Arts State Meet. A visionary group of students saw the need for a literary magazine, and under the sponsorship of Ms. Michelle Broussard, produced a 60-page, hard cover volume Of Paws and Pens, showcasing the literary and

artistic talents of our students. Our theatre and music departments continue to receive accolades. At the core of our student life is our campus ministry and service learning programs who are leaders in ministry and service in the Archdiocese of GalvestonHouston and in the greater Houston area. This annual report to donors is not only our yearly “thank you” to the many individuals, corporations and foundations who help to provide a stable financial foundation for our School; it is also an opportunity to glimpse at those who benefit from those gifts and learn of their success stories. Dear friends, your investment in St. Pius X High School— its mission and its students—is well-placed. Thank you!

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

“If you are what you should be, you will set the world ablaze!” — St. Catherine of Siena

his past year, St. Pius X High School took that challenge from Dominican St. Catherine of Siena to heart. Almost every aspect of life at SPX was ablaze during the 2013-2014 school year: • Athletically, the boys basketball and baseball teams made it to the Final Four in state competition, the district champions in golf and tennis were SPX students, members of volleyball, football, baseball, softball, girls and boys basketball, boys soccer, golf and tennis teams were named to all-state and over 20 seniors received scholarships that will help them continue being studentathletes at the collegiate level. • From a fine arts standpoint, the drama department entertained us with outstanding productions and the music department students earned individual and ensemble Superior ratings at the TAPPS State Music Contest. • From a financial perspective, the longterm stability of the School continued to be evidenced in increases in enrollment, capital reserves and financial assistance to our families.

• With regards to long-range planning, funds continued to be raised for a state-of-the art science facility and the transformation of the existing co-ed training/weight room into a first-class facility began. So what has made SPX the premier Catholic co-ed high school in Houston? It starts with Sister Donna and her dedicated administrative team (none of whom seem to need any sleep!), exceptional educators who develop their students academically, physically and spiritually, energetic School Board members who spend many hours working to ensure that the SPX legacy is a lasting one, the incredible support of current/past parents and alumni, and last but not least, the Dominican Sisters of Houston, who have made their Four Pillars (prayer, study, community and preaching) the foundation of a St. Pius X High School education. I cannot thank the St. Pius X community enough for allowing me to serve on the School Board these past few years. The experience has humbled me, inspired me, challenged me and made me eternally grateful that my children (Nick Minkoff ’16, Landon Gerlich ’11 and Lauren Gerlich ’08) were blessed to be part of the SPX family. They were loved, challenged, cajoled and

exposed to service in the name of social justice. My family will be forever enriched by our experience at SPX – as I know that those reading this annual report also have been touched. Thank you so very much for your efforts to make sure that the same Dominican education experience will be available to generations of future students. Go Panthers! Sincerely,

DID YOU KNOW? Sophomore Rachel Hardy was selected KPRC Local 2 Athlete of the Week after winning five straight golf tournaments. She went on to win the individual title at the district tournament and finished ninth in a field of 40 of the best TAPPS 5A girls golfers at state. Kade Stewart â&#x20AC;&#x2122;16 finished third in a field of 50 of the best TAPPS 5A boys golfers in the state. He was also an individual district champion.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the Stewardship for Justice Campaign raised $7,550 to support several local, national or international social services/agencies which are specially endorsed by the Order of Preachers. Each collection helps raise awareness of crucial social justice issues of our time and supports those in need.
