The Special quotes from Saratoga

“You’ve got no shot.”

“Meet Jamie Spencer. He’d like to ride a jumper in the Smithwick.” Bloodstock agent David Loder, introducing British flat jockey Jamie Spencer

“I was 18 or 19, it was a lot of fun. They had wide-open gambling, if you had a date with somebody it didn’t cost them the Earth to take you out. People didn’t take it so seriously. I didn’t drink much, liked to go dancing, didn’t gamble a lot. We went to the track in the morning first thing, to the races, out to have dinner, so we would get three or four hours of sleep a night. We made a lot of friends and had a great time.” Helen Groves, about her first trip to Saratoga

Tom VanMeter to a gaggle of boys chasing a gaggle of girls at the sales Monday night

“She’s got that temperament. She likes things her own way, if you ask her to do things she’s not comforable with, she’ll let you know.”

“Ryan’s taller than me, he’s going to kick our butt next weekend.” Runner Adam Newman on seeing Ryan Clancy, who’s tuned up for the Fasig-Tipton 5K on Saturday

Trainer Jonathan Sheppard on champion Forever Together

“We’re a full-service company.” Fasig-Tipton employee about escorting an intoxicated woman out of the facility Monday night

“They ain’t shown me the money.” Owner/trainer Leon Blusiewicz about not selling debut winner Admiral Alex

“She was a really nice filly, I thought she would probably have gotten sold for that. For whatever reason, they didn’t go for her, but she’s a super nice filly.”

Just Sayin’ “He’s that type of horse. He makes everyone around him look a whole lot smarter than we are.” Trainer Al Stall, on Grade I winner Blame.

Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor about the Oasis Dream filly who did not reach her reserve Monday night

“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy and wise. I don’t know about wealthy, but if it does, you’re going to die a poor man.”

Let us quote your next trip. 800-523-8143

DE LA ROSE STAKES PREVIEW

Round Two Attfield ships Miss Keller in for 1-mile turf stakes BY MIKE KANE A week after his fillies finished first and third in the Grade II Lake George, Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield is sending out a top contender for the $70,000 De La Rose Stakes, the feature race on this afternoon’s program. Miss Keller, runner-up in the Grade II Nassau at Woodbine June 5, is the lone Canadian in the field of 10 older fillies and mares who will go a mile on the inner turf. The 4-year-old Montjeu filly drew the outside post and is the 3-1 favorite on the morning line. “She’s doing very well, is training very well and is happy,” Attfield said. “This is the next step that we have in line for her. We’re very happy with our filly and I think she’ll run well. I wish she had a little bit better post position, but besides that I can’t complain at all.” Miss Keller started her career in Ireland with John Oxx and was moved into Attfield’s care last summer prior to a four in the Lake Placid Aug. 21. She has had only one bad outing in North America, a 13th in the Mrs. Revere last November at Churchill Downs. Attfield said his staff couldn’t find anything wrong and it just might have been a dull performance at the end of a long season. Attfield chuckled at a comment about Canadian invaders swooping in to capture stakes races at Saratoga. “I’ll keep coming with anything that makes any sense,” he said. “We look forward to that meet and hopefully we’re there most weeks.” Magdelana Racing’s My Baby Baby returns to a surface she prefers after running sixth of seven on the dirt in the Roxelana on July 2 at Churchill Downs. “She’s been hickory all her career and done nothing but run well for us,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “I made a mistake trying to shorten her back to seven-eighths last time on the dirt. We thought that would be a good spot for her to get some more black type. She didn’t run very well on it. She was second in this race last year, just got beat a neck by Cocoa Beach and I hope she runs back to that race. If she does, she should be in the mix.” My Baby Baby raced in California during the winter, finishing second to St. Trinians in the Pasadena and third to St. Trinians and Life Is Sweet in the Santa Maria Handicap. Trainer Christophe Clement entered two, Claiborne Farm’s Doubledogdare See DE LA ROSE page 6

winner Haka and the German-bred Daveron, who was fourth in the New York Handicap in June. “They’re both nice fillies,” Clement said. “It’s a little bit ambitious. It’s a good race, very competitive on paper.” Clement said Daveron won’t like it if the course is softened by rain. The 5-year-old daughter of Black Sam Bellamy owned by Team Valor International is lightly raced, with only nine starts. “She’s a very anxious filly, but she can run,” Clement said. “The mile should be helping her. The more pace the better, so she can be settled.” Trainer Tom Proctor is off to a good start at the meet and will saddle Keertana, a consistent 4-year-old who has hit the board in 14 of 17 career starts. D. Wayne Lukas has Westrock Stable’s stakes-tested Be Fair, who is trying turf for the first time. Bill Mott is sending out Juddmonte Farms’ Dreamt. Silver Reunion and Miss Catalyst are making their first starts of the year. A daughter of Harlan’s Holiday owned by Brereton Jones, Silver Reunion won the Riskaverse for trainer Graham Motion last year, but struggled in the Valley View, run over a yielding course. “She’s a very tightly wound filly coming off a layoff,” Motion said. “She might be a work short of where See De LA ROSE page 8

I normally would have a horse to run up here, but I think she is very talented and hopefully it’s a steppingstone to other things. She ran at Keeneland last fall and it was very soft. She didn’t handle it all. She’s a speed filly; kind of a free-running type. I think she’s pretty talented, if she keeps her mind straight.” Miss Catalyst is the only runner to win her last start, but that victory came 10 months ago in the Pebbles at Belmont Park. “This is her first start since the Pebbles,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “She got some time off and went through a sale and changed ownership. She’s trained well. We had her in at Belmont the day they cancelled for the heat. So she’s been ready for a little while and we’re looking forward to getting her started again.”

Big Finish Select Sale closes with strong second night, $1.2 million topper by sean clancy The first night of the Fasig-Tipton Select Sale lacked electricity. Todd Pletcher put the jumper cables on the second night when he purchased the first horse through the ring, Hip 101, for $1.2 million. The sales-topper was in the books. Bidding from the back ring, Pletcher leaned against the wall, cupping his hand over his cell phone and relaying the bidding sequence to owner Ben Leon. He never hesitated, so Pletcher never hesitated. “He was pretty confident the whole way,” Pletcher said on his way to get a glass of champagne with his family. “I did not sense any weakness.” Fasig-Tipton sensed less weakness during the second session, selling 59 horses for $17.665 million, at an average of $299,407 and a median of $250,000. Twenty-five horses did not sell. “I described the first night as workmanlike. Tonight was workmanlike but with a little less sweat,” Fasig-Tipton’s Boyd Browning said. “Bidding was more consistent. It felt better tonight, it

wasn’t fireworks after fireworks but it was solid, it was better.” Pletcher lit the fuse. The four-time Eclipse Award winning trainer went to the sale with specific instructions from Leon, a new owner who purchased stakes filly With Flying Colors last year and has horses with Pletcher and his father, J.J. “My dad has been talking to him, we have a couple of 2-year-olds for him on the farm and he expressed some interest,” Pletcher said. “He said, ‘Let me know who you think is the best horse in the sale.’ We felt like this was the one. I called him and told him this one checks all the boxes; pedigree, champion mare, conformation, everything we want.” Fasig-Tipton’s Terence Collier described the colt in two words. “Breed shaping.” Consigned by Bluewater Sales, the colt is the first foal out of champion sprinter Maryfield. By Horse of the Year and leading sire A.P. Indy, he was bred by Mike Moreno’s Southern Equine who bought Maryfield for $1.25 million at FasigTipton Kentucky Fall sale in 2007 after

she had won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. The bay colt attracted Pletcher immediately. “I liked him from the first time I saw him – everything to like, pedigree, conformation, class, everything, just one you had to like,” Pletcher said. “I didn’t get too nervous, my concern was I didn’t know where we were going to land. I projected him as a million-dollar horse, but it’s just how north of a million are you comfortable with.” Bluewater’s Meg Levy stood about 20 feet from Pletcher as the bidding progressed, she knew there was a chance he could be the sales-topper. “You never quite know who he’s going to go home with. All the right people were on him,” Levy said. “When I first saw the horse he was on Walmac Farm, they did a great job raising him, and I thought he was just magnificent. His nickname on the farm was Superman. I don’t think there’s anything else you can say. The possibility is always there (to top a sale) and you just hope that all the variables are going to sort themselves out.” The colt was the only seven-figure horse of the two-night sale. The second highest sale came late in the second session when Robert and Lawana Low purchased Hip 194, a daugh-

ter of Distorted Humor for $875,000. Tom McCrocklin did the bidding on the half-sister to champion Point Given, “She’s a beautiful horse, by the right sire, half-sister to a classic winner, a great horse,” said McCrocklin who breaks the Low’s horses in Ocala. “They’re trying to buy high-profile horses and she fit all the profiles we’re looking for. She was the first horse we looked at and we kept coming back to her.” Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, the filly’s page only goes to her second dam, that’s how much pedigree she brings to the Lows’ program. They’ve owned stellar females in the past including Test winner Capote Belle and Kentucky Oaks runner-up Real Cozzy. “When you come here and try to buy a filly like her, you have to expect to pay that kind of money. We actually stretched a little, we were topped out at 750, but if you’re willing to pay 750, why not a little more,” McCrocklin said. “Robert had given me a number and turned me loose and then I said, ‘You know I better get him on the phone,’ because I knew we were in that ballpark. The last bid there was a long hesitation and then he said go ahead, we were looking for the wire.” See sales page 15

Leading buyer John Ferguson struck for the first time Tuesday night when securing Hip 119, a colt by Street Cry, who went for $650,000. Ferguson purchased two colts for $750,000. He recruited Hip 142, a half-brother to Haskell winner Lookin At Lucky and Jim Dandy winner Kensei, for $750,000. Gainesway consigned the son of Afleet Alex. Ferguson returned to draft Hip 178, a bay colt by Smart Strike, consigned by Denali Stud for Falls Creek Farm. For the two nights, a total of 117 yearlings were sold for over $32 million. The overall average was $277,051

and the median was at $250,000. Gross revenue declined 38.3 percent and the average price fell 15.6 percent. “We knew it was going to be tough. Truthfully, an increase wasn’t expected. We made some mistakes, but in the overall big picture I don’t think we made any dramatic mistakes,” Browning said. “I don’t think there are any significant changes that are necessary to build upon this sale and to continue in our efforts to make it the premier yearling sale in the world. It will be interesting to see how we stack up as we continue through the yearling market during the remainder of the year. In golf terms, I think we’ve posted a pretty low number in the clubhouse.” – additional reporting by Katie Bo Williams.

Just Like Dad? With an eye toward past heroes, trainers look at ’10 sales yearlings BY Joe clancy In 2007, all of Saratoga talked about Street Sense. The Kentucky Derby winner outgamed Grasshopper to win the Grade I Travers and electrify the old grandstand once again. Jim Tafel smiled. Carl Nafzger talked about it.

FASIG-TIPTON SALES Calvin Borel whooped it up. And then the bay colt headed to the breeding shed – a stallion prospect with a big upside joining the Thoroughbred pillars at Darley. Three short years later, Street Sense’s sons and daughters are in Saratoga – heading to the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton and causing buyers to compare the youngsters to their father. The same goes for progeny of Hard Spun, who won the King’s Bishop on the 2007 Travers undercard, 2006 Whitney winner Invasor, 2006 King’s Bishop winner Henny Hughes and so on. “Already, that’s the first thing I think,” said Kiaran McLaughlin, who trained Invasor and Henny Hughes. “You sure think about how fast it happens. It wasn’t that long ago Henny Hughes and Invasor were in our barn, running over there across the street.” “It doesn’t seem like it’s been long enough since he’s been retired to have babies at the sales,” Nafzger said of Street Sense. “As a young sire, he’s done everything he can up to now and they’ve done a great job with him – getting him good mares and things. Hey, it’s up to him now.” But that’s the Thoroughbred game. The horses run, then they move on – trying to duplicate themselves and improve a breed they helped bolster on the track. They dazzled with factual performance on the racetrack. Now they dazzle – or try to – with potential in the breeding shed and sales ring. Street Sense, Hard Spun and Invasor are represented by their first crops at the Fasig-Tipton sale. Henny Hughes’ first foals are 2-year-olds this year. The young horses and others like them are the future – all potential with little to go on other than appearance. See Sires page 18

Sires –

Continued from page 16

Nafzger looks for – and sees – a little bit of Street Sense in each of the yearlings. The babies carry some of the same physical setup – “a little bit of his head, a little bit of his pasterns.” McLaughin said Henny Hughes, a racy sprinter, has “stamped” his foals with the same athletic appearance. But most horsemen will point to things they can’t see when they talk about yearlings. Street Sense possessed two traits that Nafzger hopes appear in the offspring. “His mind, number one, he had a great mind and that helped make him a good racehorse; two, he had a great burst of speed,” Nafzger said. “Right now, you can get an idea of their minds by how they’re handling the sales but you can’t tell about that burst. If he Street Sense (left) and Grasshopper battle in the 2007 Travers. gave them that, then he will be a great bies. So far, it looks like he’s covered the mind and sire.” McLaughlin hopes Invasor, whose lone horse in the conformation, but that’s all you can see at this the sale (a filly) sold Tuesday night, gave his sons and point.” And anybody who tells you differently is making daughters some hidden traits too. “Obviously he had a big heart, and desire to win, it up. Beautiful yearlings can turn out to be slow. Below I hope he gave them that,” McLaughlin said. “I felt like he wanted to win every time he went over there. average yearlings can grow into professional, polHe had a great, great heart. He didn’t ever get tired ished athletes who outrun their peers. “That burst of speed, boom, that’s what you rewhen he trained and ran. It will be very interesting to see if that translates – you can’t find that out until ally hope the babies have,” said Nafzger. “You can’t see that in a yearling. If people say they can see that, later but it was there in him.” Nafzger wrote a book called “Traits of a Winner,” they’re lying, but if they ever figure that out, the game is over.” and went to it while describing Street Sense. There’d be no mystery left, no more questions, no “He had all the traits – the class, the ability, the mind, the immune system, the soundness,” Nafzger more surprises. Nafzger and McLaughlin looked at yearlings this said. “That’s what made him an exceptional horse. That’s what we hope he can translate on to the ba- week and McLaughlin client Shadwell bought a Pul-

pit colt and a Rock Hard Ten colt. Neither man will look to purposefully buy sons and daughters of their ex-horses, but . . . “I’m a looker and a buyer, but I doubt I’ve got enough money to buy,” Nafzger said. “They keep telling me the market’s depressed, but my fifty thousand’s not going very far. It’s not depressed enough for me yet.” McLaughlin tries not to compare the yearlings to their parents. “Every one is different and I try not to think about it too much when I’m looking at them,” he said. “You look to see if you see something you like conformation wise. I don’t put a lot of emphasis that I trained the sire but I like them, I like that they’re here. I want to see them and I want to see them do well.” The good traits sires can transfer to their progeny are obvious – speed, stamina, sense, health – but what about Tod Marks the bad? “Street Sense didn’t have a bad habit, but he had one attribute that you might not want and that was when he’d get to the lead he’d get there and say ‘oh well, I won, hey look at me,’ ” Nafzger said. “That comes as part of the good mind, he thought about things a little bit.” Nafzger singled out Hip 98, who sold Monday night for $230,000 to Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson, as being the most like Street Sense. The bay colt is out of the Deputy Minister mare Madison’s Quest, making him a half-brother to Grade I turf winner Request For Parole. NOTES: Street Sense’s sire Street Cry topped the first session with an $800,000 colt and a $775,000 filly along with a $275,000 colt . . . Six sons and daughters of Street Sense sold Monday night at an average of more than $217,000.

Buyers looked over the yearlings closely at Fasig-Tipton this week.

Great Expectations

‘Picky’ marketplace translates to good sales for some by katie bo williams

FASIG-TIPTON SALES

An increase in the buy-back rate from 19.8 to 35 percent comprised part of the discouraging figures from Monday night’s opener at Fasig-Tipton; however, there was trade to be done with a well-placed and appropriately valued horse. It wasn’t all bad. Wayne Sweezey, consigning under his banner at Saratoga for the first time, sold one of the three well-received Rock Hard Ten yearlings. The colt, a half-brother to Grade I winning Vacare, commanded $325,000 from Shadwell early in the evening. Sweezey, who left his role as managing partner of Darby Dan in 2008, also sold a Corinthian colt for $110,000. “I’m delighted with how we sold,” Sweezey said. “Those two horses sold really well, I have two very happy clients. I’m delighted that I came here with those two horses because we picked the right spot for them, and we got them sold and it’s been very good for us.” Sweezey credited Fasig-Tipton for its hard work in recruiting buyers. “The visitation to the barn, the number of people that were looking, I’m really satisfied with what Fasig-Tipton has done,” Sweezey said. “The boys have really worked hard to

get people here, I’ve had plenty of looks, I don’t feel at all short on the people coming to look at my horses.” As pleased as Sweezey is with the prices his horses fetched, he emphasized that realistic expectations were the key to their success. “I do feel in this market today, there’s only a handful of people willing to spend from 250 up,” Sweezey said. “If you come in here with a horse that you over-appraised, you’re going to take him home. You have to know your horse, know the market, know the pedigree and know who’s on it before you put a big reserve on it.” He revealed that though the owners of the colt would have been comfortable with retaining and racing the colt, the reserve placed on the horse was much lower than the price he commanded. “We knew we had enough serious buyers on the colt that we felt confident that we would get over our reserve,” Sweezey said. Fasig-Tipton’s Walt Robertson also emphasized the importance of putting a realistic value on horses. See picky page 27

“Saddle up and enjoy the ride with Susan Richards. You’ll love it.” — Rita Mae Brown

Three elegant tales filled with horses as complicated and spirited as their human counterparts, these are inspiring stories of courage and hope and the ways in which all love — even a horse’s — has the power to heal.

TV Special The Saratoga Special and the Horse Racing Radio Network team up for a half-hour television show every Saturday and Sunday during the meet. The show airs from 10-10:30 a.m. on the Capital OTB Network and will also be carried nationally by HRTV. Hosted by Mike Penna and Sean Clancy, the format calls for interviews with prominent owners, trainers, jockeys and racing personalities.

“Last night, there were some nearmisses,” Robertson said. “It’s trying times and you better put the right numbers, or there’s a big risk of not getting your horse sold.” Sweezey recognized that though he is satisfied, many consignors are not. He drew attention to the relative flawlessness necessary in a marketable individual. “I hate the term ‘check all the boxes.’ If the horse fits all the criteria of the person buying it, then it sells well,” Sweezey said. “If you have a flaw of any sort, you’re going to take a cut in price.” Marshall Silverman has been selling a handful of horses at Saratoga for the past four years and sold an Elusive Quality colt for $385,000 Monday night, the highest price he has achieved since coming to the Spa. Though pleased with the commercial success of his horse, Silverman voiced similar concern with the high expectations of buyers. “Everybody is just being way too picky,” Silverman said. “Everybody wants to buy a perfect pretty show horse, and that’s what they end up being, just a perfect pretty show horse, not a racehorse. It’s getting ridiculous.” Eaton Sales’ Reiley McDonald also used the word “picky” to describe the buyer base. “We showed horses 30 percent more than we did last year, we had a lot of shows per horse. But everybody’s work-

ing harder. They’re looking two to three times,” McDonald said. “The fact that you had a third look doesn’t mean you made the short list. The fact that you got vetted doesn’t mean you made the short list. When demand is low, people are very picky. A lot of people looking, a lot of people doing their homework, that doesn’t translate into higher dollars per horse.” McDonald suggested that the high RNA rate spoke just as much to the stringent requirements of the existing buyer base as it did to the expectations of the sellers. “In Monday’s sale, if a horse jumped through all the hoops and made the short list, they sold well,” McDonald said. “If you didn’t make that short list, there was nobody there to bid on the horse, so you could put the reserve at 100, 70, or 40, and nobody’s going to bid on your horse.” Gainesway’s Brian Graves was alarmed by the “pickiness” of the market. He attributed the high RNA rate to owners that can afford to retain and race their yearling. These sellers, he suggested, are likely to have the wellbred individuals, which is a cause for concern. “It can be indicative that the market’s thin and there’s not enough buyers to absorb horses of that caliber,” Graves said. McDonald also cited owners that are not financially beholden to sell. “In the boutique market, it has been that way for years,” McDonald said. “However, this year, it’s a bit more acute.”

WEDNESDAY NOTEBOOK

Slam Dunk Trainers, jockeys battle on court for good cause by PHIL JANACK Call it a cause for fun. Horsemen gathered for a Racetrack Chaplaincy of American-organized charity basketball game July 28 to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys’ Fund, played at the new Saratoga Springs Recreation Center on Vanderbilt Avenue. The jockeys (aided by a couple of ringers) edged the trainers, 46-41, but the real winners were the causes for which they played, and the fans who had a chance to see some of Thoroughbred racing’s biggest names out of their comfort zone. “It was a good time for a good cause, and they were able to raise some money,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “I liked playing. It was fun.” Pletcher, who coached last year’s jockeys in a matchup with a traveling youth all-star team out of Texas, took his turn on the court this year – until he fouled out. “I had a whopping three points, but I led the team in fouls,” he said. “I think they stopped counting at, like, 10.”

The trainers led at halftime but fell behind in the second half, a late rally falling short as the jockeys employed a suffocating pressure defense. “They’re quick, man,” Pletcher said. “A couple of those guys are like waterbugs. They’re everywhere.” Trainer Rick Schosberg said the biggest challenge was trying to box out a few of the “jockeys” for rebounds. “I think we did very well, considering they obviously changed the scale of weights, and heights,” he said. “Some of the jockeys were like 6-5, 6-6 and 6-7, and were in the process of playing NCAA college ball, I think. “You expect to see 5-foot-2, 120-pound (guys), and you’re looking at 6-7. I’m guarding a guy, and I come up to his chest. I expected that to be us.” Like Pletcher, Schosberg enjoyed the experience. “We had a good time. It’s a great organization,” he said. “The chaplaincy put it together, and they had a video at halftime that showed what they did on the backstretch. It was a good time and for charity, and a lot of fun.”

Brown off and running Chad Brown came to Saratoga to win some races, and the 31-year-old trainer has enjoyed a phenomenal start at his hometown track. A native of nearby Mechanicville, Brown enters the second full week of the meet tied with Pletcher atop the leaderboard with six wins, though he has started nearly half the number of horses (26-14). Brown also has one second and two thirds and $148,000 in purse earnings through 10 days. See Notebook page 28

“I just have the right horses for the right spots right now. Everything has fallen into place,” Brown said. “A lot of them ran second and third at Belmont the last meet, so they were sitting on wins. It’s just the timing of everything, I think.” Brown had 11 seconds and 11 thirds to go along with eight wins at Belmont Park’s spring-summer meet that preceded Saratoga. He worked as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainers Shug McGaughey and the late Bobby Frankel before going out on his own at the end of 2007. In 2008, Brown saddled six winners at Saratoga. Last summer, he had five. “We really aim for this meet,” he said. “As I’m doing this more, you learn as you go. I’m still young, and I’m learning how to maybe prepare a little bit better for this meet and what it really takes, what kind of horses win what races.” On sheer numbers, Brown will be hard-pressed to compete with Pletcher. For now, they remain on even terms. “I have ammunition,” Brown said. “I don’t know how long it will last, but I have more. We’ll see.”

Hopefully, we’ll stay lucky. They’ve just got to stay healthy.” A 4-year-old bay daughter of Cuvee, Rock Hall Honey went gate to wire under jockey Channing Hill, paying $12.20 as the 5-1 fifth choice in the field of seven claimers, running 6 furlongs in 1:11.02. “Channing rode her beautifully,” Terranova said. “There was a lot of speed in the race, and she’s very speedy. It was just what everybody else was going to do. Channing got her relaxed down inside, and even though she went to the lead she looked pretty com-

Terranova gets win for 2010 Nothing seemed to go right for trainer John Terranova II at Saratoga last summer. He headed back downstate after failing to register a win with 28 starters. There will be no duck for Terranova this year, thanks to Rock Hall Honey’s victory July 30. “I’m glad to get the first one home,” Terranova said. “I’ve got a lot of good ones to run up here still.

fortable and relaxed the whole way. She’s a gutsy little thing on her day. She was able to punch home and put them away.” Terranova is coming off a Belmont meet where he won 11 races and $638,537 in purses from 43 starters. He was 11-for-38, earning $353,642 over the winer at Aqueduct. “I had a good Belmont and a good winter,” he said. “The horses ran well at Keeneland. I’ve had a great year so far, so I’m happy about that.”

John Terranova has a winner at the meet already.

When it comes to the best older horse in training, Pletcher is taking no chances. Quality Road had a custom schooling session following training hours on the main track Monday morning, where the starting gate was hauled up from its usual spot in the 7-furlong chute to the finish line, where the field will break for Saturday’s Grade I Whitney Handicap, Quality Road’s next scheduled start. “It’s going to be a little different environment starting in front of the grandstand,” Pletcher said. “It was just a safety net. We wanted to make sure everything was on target.” Quality Road was fractious at the starting gate prior to last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, and was ultimately scratched. He is perfect in three starts this year, and has been training well for the Whitney, where he figures to be a heavy favorite. “Anytime you have horses like him, you worry about everything,” Pletcher said. “It’s just the nature of the beast. You worry about every single straw in his path between now and the end of his career. The way he’s training, you certainly have a lot of confidence that he’s coming up to the race in great shape. “I’ve never seen him any better than he is now. I think you can argue, watching him train, that he’s the best he’s ever been, and that’s kind of scary.”

Javier Castellano, Rajiv Maragh, Freddie Lenclud will change the guard. John Velazquez plans to be the guard for a while longer. Golfcarts need water in their batteries. Todd Pletcher is a better horse trainer than basketball player. Phil Gleaves is here, tuning up Mambo Meister, who’s now a dirt sprinter. People still yearn for the good old days. Eric Guillot fits right in at Saratoga. The jury’s still out around the sales grounds on whether Sheikh Mohammed’s presence helps or hurts the sale. Fasig-Tipton still has some bugs to work out – valet parking at the top of the list – there is no doubt they will. If half the trainers waited five minutes to get on the turf, it would be a lot safer.

Progress Report Winslow Homer is fragile. The Travers looked loaded one minute and light the next. Hosting a TV show is way harder than being the sidekick. Mark Casse has stalls in the stakes barn. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is going to be tight. The Friends of Sanford Stud Farm are making progress. The Shake Shack makes a mean burger. Tom Proctor and Bruce Levine are glad it’s 2010 and not 2009. Musket Man, stuck between 7 furlongs and 9 furlongs, looks awesome for Derek Ryan. Richard DePass can coach a jockey like John Wooden could coach a shooting guard. Anak Nakal has the best walk of any horse on the grounds, Quality Road has the best mane, Missinglisalewis has the best gallop and El Crespo has the best neck. The 2-year-old races are still confusing – experience or hype? The product has played out better than expected. Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher will turn every stone when it comes to handling high-strung horses, Mott ponied Unrivaled Belle (with a rider) to the paddock for the Ruffian while Pletcher simulated an afternoon gate experience for Quality Road. The Annex could still use some grass seed (come on Voss and Sheppard, spend some money). The turf has already taken a beating.

The Fruit Man switched to plastic bags, bad for the environment and for the mystique of eating peanuts on the backside. Don’t drop your shells anywhere near the Graham Motion barn. Rick Violette can’t get lucky at the gate. There’s a garden right out of Country Living at the house next to the horse path on Union Avenue. There’s a tomato-growing contest on the backside. Sergio Vasquez (not Santiago Vasquez as written here), who exercises horses for Barclay Tagg, won 3,604 races in Chile. He was Chile’s winningest jockey before Gustavo Barrera caught him in 2003. Bill Person is missed at the corner of Mott and Clement. Toadie is missed at every corner. The Cupcake factory, at 507 Broadway, has taken The Special’s marketshare from Spring Street Deli. They deliver from across the hall. Don’t let kids drive golfcarts. Chad Brown enters aggressively, he’s the dog at Pletcher’s heels. Bridgetown will win Thursday. There is never enough advertising. The game needs more characters like Leon Blusiewicz. He wins a 9-furlong maiden race with a first-time starter, touts him around like he’s running for mayor and then says he’s going to win the Travers with the horse. We should have bet out on Followmyfootsteps, Settle For Medal, Admiral Alex, Proviso, It’s Tea Time . . . so much to learn.
