This is a gun violence memorial center responding to the 2022 Buffalo Shooting incident that happened at Tops Friendly Market in the east neighborhood of Buffalo. The incident started with a white supremacists who located the Tops Friendly Market as an African-American community on ArcGis and decided to target the market directly to express his hatred towards the African American racial group. A total of ten people were murdered and three were injured; all of whom are African Americans.
Therefore, this memorial sits right across the street from the Tops Friendly Market as a solid form of remembrance of this tragedy. There are a total of 10 memorials on the rooftop to remember the 10 unfortunately murdered lives and 3 stones in the front to remember the 3 unnecessary injured lives. The site selection is intended to remind everyone, regardless of their race, to remember and reflect on the unfortunate and traumatizing tragedy that once happened during the summer of 2022.
The morphology of the form is a result of the combination of two systems; the contour of the land and the symbolizing christianity cross from African American culture. The literal expression of this combination is to advocate that it is possible to have the two peculiar systems who do not share any similarities be compatible together. In other words, the way we react to this unfortunate tragedy cannot be a kind of reflection towards someone we are striving so hard not to be – to react to differences with anger and hate. We are strong enough to listen and to understand the people and the values they hold which sometimes appears to be the exact opposite of ours. We have the ability to accept them before we can understand and influence them.
