SH ALL WE G ATH ER
It’s a story as old as time, etched deep into our collective memory –the river as the source of life, nourishing body and soul. People have always been drawn to the river’s edge. This is where community was born. And our own community is no exception. What began as a small encampment of traders and prospectors on the bank of the South Platte eventually grew into the city we call Denver.
And our city is not done being born. Today, city and river continue to co-evolve. And they’re calling to a new generation. Young families. Professionals. City workers. City dwellers. Growing companies. Entrepreneurs. Artists. Adventurers. A new generation of boundary-pushers. They see the promise: life giving. Life enriching. Life expanding. A deeper connection to the things and people that matter. And they hear the river calling again, inviting them to gather in a new place at the water’s edge.

We’re bringing the river back to life. And in the process we’re turning it into a major attraction that will bring this entire part of the South Platte River Valley back to life as well – and reconnect it to the city. This is the beginning of a much more ambitious effort. We are initiating (and funding) the revitalization of the city’s entire riverfront, far beyond our own borders. With its riparian edges and its various wildlife habitats, this is a unique and vital stretch of river. We want to celebrate/ share all of it with a series of overlooks, perches, boardwalks and platforms that offer people many ways to engage with the water. Our plan calls for an active boundary that brings the river to the city and the city to the river. It’s symbiosis at its best.

It’s an integral part of the city fabric, it’s human-centric, designed to be a complete, fully functional neighborhood. And it’s family friendly. We’re continuing to help Denver meet its challenges by growing in a smart, sustainable way.

It’s all about the user experience.
Innovative design has improved our lives in countless ways – from the look and feel of a smart phone to the planning and designing of our cities. Here, as in the world of technology, the user experience is all-important. It’s about responsiveness. Fit. Efficiency. Space and light. Mobility. Flexibility. Placing essentials close at hand. It’s also about conserving energy. Being in touch with nature. And creating a comfortable and sustainable habitat that anticipates your needs. Ultimately, it’s about healthy city living in today’s world. That’s the essence of The River Mile.

Development ecology is science that lives at the intersection of the human and natural environments. And it’s leading to some innovative ideas about how these two worlds can coexist. Life-giving, life-enriching, and definitely life-changing. In the case of The River Mile, we’re showing how the city can live at the river’s edge by transforming a dynamic floodplain into a beautiful wetland and wildlife habitat. We’re using “blue roofs” to capture and filter rainwater so that it can feed the landscape and return safely to the river. And this is just the beginning.
