ARCTIC CAT CUP: 42 YEARS OF HISTORY
STIGS MASKIN-ARCTIC CAT CUP NEWS-GOLDEN HELMET

SO... LET´ It´s finally time to start up the snowcross season of 2014. And as usual it starts with Arctic Cat Cup, the biggest and oldest snowcross competition in Europe. The weekend of 11-12th of january is the season starter of European snowcross. Over 200 drivers with the best starting field in Europe. It´s a gathering that every snowcross driver wants to top with a victory., But what makes Arctic Cat Cup that important for European snowcross? Is it that the best drivers meets in one place? Of course, say some. I would state a different reason and say that the greatness of Arctic Cat Cup is the sheer size of the event. The number of drivers, from the youngest drivers on the smallest machines to the grown ups on their fast machines. From just for the fun of it to the professional racers.
There´s plenty of competitions aimed at the best drivers. But there is only one competition that allures and make room to the whole range of snowcross racers in Europe. It´s no mystery why the 150 gold helmet for kids started at Gräfsåsen´s snowcross stadium in Östersund. Östersund´s snowmobile club and Arctic Cat Cup always aiming at renewal, and making the sport develop into the future. When Swedish MC and snowmobile association now introduces regulations to 150 gold helmet, Östersund´s SSK will arrange a series of four 150 gold helmet competitions But for now we say welcome to all drivers to the 42:nd edition of Arctic Cat Cup. Let´s just hope that the gods of snow are with us. So that we can continue with making great competitions.

THE
Under the management of Johan Olofsson, Arctic Cat Cup has become famous for an extremely good race track and to be an snowmobile event in absolute world class. What´s his recipe?
progress. Arctic Cat Cup has always been a test site and a gathering place for snowcross. Partly because it´s the season starter and partly because we have the largest amount of drivers here. We started with 150 gold helmet here for some years ago and now we want to take a step further to develop youth racing even more, says Johan.
- To start with, you always has to put your main focus in creating an extraordinary snowcross competition. That´s the reason we´re all here. And that´s why it´s always must be our main priority. It doesn´t matter if everything else works, but if the competition sucks then the whole event will suck, says Johan Olofsson Event Manager at Arctic Cat Cup.
- The last important piece is simpel: You must have fun! If it´s not fun all these fantastic people will stop sacrifice their precious spare time to the event. Yes it´s hard work, Yes sometimes it´s ungrateful. But as long as you have a good time doing it, it´s worth it.
- If you want to create a good competition you´ll need a great staff. Arctic Cat Cup´s main staff consists of former snowcross

Gräfsåsen´s snowcross stadium is a classic ground in snowcross. But it´s future doesn´t look that bright. - Our activity here at Gräfsåsen operates on a contract that renews one year at a time. We don´t have enough electricity and we´re not allowed to make our own well of water. Power, water and a snowcat are what we need to keep our snowcross track to a minimum standard. To make our operation successful in Östersund we have to come to an understanding with the City of Östersund where we can create the snowcross stadium of the future.
When everything around the snowcross competition is at top you can start to concentrate on the audiens. Creating an area with good overview of the track, easy access to food and beverages and an intresting sideshow. Logistics also has to run smooth.
- We´re not into this for the money. Everyone who is working in this event does it for nonprofit reasons. We think it´s good to contribute to the snowcross sport. And we´re having a good time despite that some people are working against us. It´s good to feel that despite that, we can arrange an event in the middle of nowhere, in the chilling cold winds and still manage to get an audience of 3 000 people to pay to see it.
- When the needs of drivers, teams and spectators has been taking care of. You also have make sure that there´s room to make the sport
That´s why I say to everyone: come to Arctic Cat Cup in january to show that motorsport is importent even in the City of Östersund!

STIGS MA - WHEN IT COMES TO ARCTIC CAT ATV At Per´s office we see something green rush past the window. One of the Wildcats seems to be ready for delivery and is now tested at Stigs Maskin´s parking area - We started to sell Arctic Cat ATV in the 2005. The sales in this particular area of Sweden was very low. So one day the general agent of Arctic Cat contacted us since they thought that we had the right kind of customers. And the right kind of customers was exactly what Stigs Maskin had. The first year as a retailer they sold more Arctic Cat ATV than any other retailer in Sweden. Since then they sell an average of 30 ATV/year. Stigs Maskin was founded by Per´s father Stig and Per´s uncle Per-Erik Andersson. The company was located in Häggenås and the company´s main operation was to buy and scrap forestry equipment and sell the used parts. Year 2000 the operation moved to Lit where Stigs Maskin had a workshop since earlier. Even today the used parts are an importent part of the operation. But they focus more and more as a retailer of new machines, parts, con-
Per have a past as a driver in both folkrace and in snowcross. When he competed in snowcross he did that in the same team as Johan Olofsson, Event Manager at Arctic Cat Cup. Per´s biggest success was a third place in the Swedish Championships in hillcross 2007. This year Per writes a new chapter in Stigs Maskin´s 30 year old history. - Yes, during 2013 we acquired 50% of the company Morten in Östersund. This way we can serve our customers in Östersund even better. Morten has open during saturdays wich means that our customers can get our goods at weekends too. From 2014 we´re going to have a showroom for Arctic Cat ATV at Morten also. And we´re going to have a shoowroom for Morten products like trailers, snowblowers and lawn movers here in Lit, ends Per.
During Arctic Cat Cup in Östersund you will meet Stigs Maskin (ATV) and Krokom Speedshop (snowmobiles) at the market area inside the entrance.

A VISIT AT CATM
Bengan Westerlund has a long and motley career in snowcross. Many exciting projects has passed through his workshop. His latest project is currently taking a clean sweap in the Pro AM Woman class at the Amsoil snocross championship. Bengans Motor in the village of Ope is the archetype for Santa´s workshop for all of us who likes Arctic Cat. The whole store is stuffed with parts, apparels and accesories that fits to Arctic Cat enthusiasts whether they drive oldies or new machines. But how come that Bengan became the Catmaster? I have always been curious in how it all started. - To take it all from the beginning, it all started at Henry Johansson back in -79. When I worked with Henry I got in contact with snowmobiles seriously for the first time in my life. -81 I started my own business at Rådhusgatan in Östersund. I brought Suzuki motocross with me from Henry. I also did a couple of jobs to the snowmobile manufacturer Aktiv. They had sold an amount of Aktiv Grizzly to India. They would be used at 3000 meters altitude
MASTER´S and the original engine wasn´t adapted to that environment. So I modified the Grizzlys with double carborators, ported cylinders, studded tracks and different exhaust pipes.
You were also first with shocks from Öhlins? - Back in those days Öhlins only produced shocks to motocross. I saw that those shocks would be nice in snowcross too. The problem was that the motocross shocks was to long. The capacity at the factory didn´t leave room to manufacture shocks for snowmobiles. So in 1982 I started to adapt Öhlins shocks to snowcross. We got all the original parts from Öhlins and then we shortened the piston rods, cylinder tubes and the containers to the right length. This went on for about five years. Then the Öhlins factory got more capacity and could manufacture the shocks directly from my specifications adapted to snowmobiles.
But how did it started with Arctic Cat? - Aktiv in Östersund was general agent for Arctic Cat in Sweden before Arctic Cat went bankrupt. Aktiv continued to offer parts to Arctic Cat owners the rest of the 80´s. But when Aktiv ended it´s business they left all the parts to Erling Sande Sweden who was the current general agent for Arctic Cat. But when Sande´s Finnish owner went bankrupt I bought the parts instead. It was very convenient delivered. All parts was delivered in the tin cabinets that they´ve been stored in at Aktiv. And after that it was Black Magic? - In 1995 i started with the import of Black Magic who was authorised manufacturer of engine-, clutch- and other special parts that Arctic Cat didn´t manufacture on their own. The same year I took over the Arctic Cat Sweden racing team. I had the team until the beginning of 2000 when the general agent KGK and I had different views in how to run a team. You have also adapted a lot of Arctic Cats to the Swedish market also? - Black Magic USA built special machines to Sweden when the 400-class was new. But I took over the second year and started to build the 400 cc machines at my workshop. I´ve must have build more than 100 of those Arctic Cat 400. I have also built special machines to other drivers like Krister Johansson. A lot of machines was also built on assignment from the Arctic Cat factory. I have also built racingmachines in USA who was later copied by the americans. And now you´re supporting Marica Renheim in the USA? - Yes. Marica competed in the snocross series last year but didn´t get the backing from a team. I said that I was willing to help, but then it had to be in an Arctic Cat team. Said and done. This year she drives for the Christian Brothers team. I support Christian Brothers financially and the two Arctic Cat SnoPro snowmobiles that Marica uses in the ISOC-series are mine. That´s why they are marked with ”Catmaster”. In return I have in many years helped American drivers who want to come to Europe to compete. Some of the drivers are Logan Christian, Cory Davis, Garth Kaufman and Cody Thomsen. And finally, is it any meaning that I try to reach you by the phone? Absolutely not. Send an e-mail instead. In this way my customers gets help quicker.

It was meant that the first Sno-Tric Cup should have been arranged at the brand new Gräfsåsen´s snowmobile stadium. But it wasn´t enough snow and after having postponed the competition several times it had to move to the mountains at the village Åkersjön. Seved was the first driver to win the competition and did that on a Sno-Tric snowmobile.
Börje Arvdal became the first winner on a non domestic snowmobile. In Stock the famous Olausson brothers took the top spots at the podium. Leif won and Tord was second.

In Stock 500 Östersund´s SSK Tord Olausson won and Bengt-Olov ”Bengan” Westerlund took the second place. In the Woman class Maud Eriksson Östersund´s SSK took home the gold.
This year the Woman class disappeared but still a success for Östersund´s SSK drivers. Lars-Johan Edh won Big Stock and Hans Uibe won as usual Junior class. Lars Johansson took second place in Shell Cup.

The track was modified this year to the drivers joy. But the surface was a fail. Pure ice and very little snow. Östersund´s SSK Maud Eriksson won Women class and Hans Uibe won junior class
Because of the large number of drivers the competition was arranged in two days for the first time. Qualifier on saturday and finals on sunday. Only 50 spectators came on saturday while 700 came to see the finals on the sunday. The big crowd pleaser was the race with two tracked snowmobiles. Östersund´s SSK Tord Olausson took second place in Shell Cup and Johan Svensson was second in Junior class.
1983
1986
Another bad winter with little snow made the track icy this year too. Östersund´s SSK Maud Eriksson took another win in Woman class and Hans Uibe took another win i Junior class.
Back to a one day competition. The race started at 12th of january but after a couple of accidents the arranger decided to postpone the competition to 2nd of february. Östersund´s SSK driver Michael Sjöström won Big Stock and Johan Svensson took another second place in Junior class.

The race went outside Gräfsåsen´s snowmobile stadium for the first time since 1973. More specific to the Östersund trot arena. Studs in the track was yet again allowed mostly to bring a little more speed to the competition. Despite that the competition went slower than usual. Hans Nordqvist and Nils-Anders Persson took first and second for Östersund´s SSK in the Junior class
The Norwegian Björn Klöften was the leader of the Racing final for a long time. But after a spectacular crash at the start/finish straight his chances to be the first now-Swede to win disappeared. Instead Mats Öhman won despite that his hands was so cold that he couldn´t steer properly.

Back att Gräfsåsen´s snowmobile stadium and back to no studs in the track. But Mikael Nyström was equally fast with or without studs and took his second win in Aktiv Cup. Östersund´s SSK Nils Anders Persson won Junior class.
Again very little snow made the track icy. Until now the Aktiv Cup had been arranged on sundays (except the year it was a two day competiton) but from now on the race was arranged on saturdays.

When Östersund´s snowmobile club started with kids racing mini snowmobiles, they couldn´t imagine that it would be a huge success. And now the first of those kids steps upp to Junior class. Max Lemnert certainly looks exactly like he hasn´t done anything else than competed in snowcross all his live when he stands next to hos Polaris IQ. And that fits us just well as we are intervjuing him on the most classical grounds of all in snowcross racing: Gräfsåsen. In just a couple of weeks Max will stand at the starting line in the biggest snowcross competition in Europe. But then, he had done that many times before - Yes I have raced in the 150 gold helmet class in Arctic Cat Cup every year it´s been arranged, says Max.
Dad, Mats Lemnert, who has a long history in motorsport himself did the right thing. They sold the mini snowmobiles wich they sold in almost no time at all. - It was crazy. At least 50 people called us and wanted the snowmobiles. That, if anything, shows the huge interest for mini snowmobiling, says Mats. Max sister doesn´t have a snowmobile of her own now but she can borrow Max´s during the winter. Even if she doesn´t continue with snowcross she loves snowmobiling. To be able to compete Max has serveral partners that supports him: Motorhuset/Polaris, Jämtlands Bildemontering, Mittmedia, Northcar and Stargym.
FROM MIN TO Max who will be 12 years old 2014 is already something of a veteran in snowcross when he now debuts in Junior 12-14. The question is why he has choosed snowcross?
- Me and my sister each got a mini snowmobile when we were younger. We thought it was increadibly fun to drive. The most driving was done at our parents cabin where we used to chase each other. When Östersund´s SSK started with kids racing I wanted to participate. And last season I said to my father that I wanted to compete in Junior class.
- It´s important to train so you have the power to fulfill a race. At the gym I train my arms, legs and stomach. I have also started to train my cardio expecially on my mountainbike, says Max. This winter Max and his father will spend a lot of time in their team bus. Sweden Cup and Hillcross are on the schedule. And Max focuses on his main goal: - I want to have fun and want to fullfill every race.

Last years biggest success at Super Sno-X at Jämtkraft Arena was the Duells Duel. This year Östersund´s SSK will not arrange stadiumcross in Östersund. But there will be a new Duells Duel. Niklas Höglund, head of snowmobile at Duells, is also member of the race staff at Östersund´s SSK and Arctic Cat Cup. - When the Duells Duel became such a success last year we thought that we had to continue with it, says Niklas. Twelve drivers are invited to drive a head to head race against each other. Every heat starts at the starting line but the finish line will be just before the club house. So the heats will not be a complete full lap on the racetrack. - The Duells Duel heats will be fast and exciting. The drivers have to be quick in the start but also fast on the track, says Niklas. And it will pay to be the quickest on the track. First prize is a brand new Arctic Cat ZR 120 worth 30 000 SEK. - It´s a really good first prize. But it´s a chosen few who will have the chance to win the ZR. And the twelve drivers will be presented on our webbsite www.arcticcatcup.se and of course at www.facebook.com/arcticcatcup, says Niklas. The Duells Duel is arranged on Sunday the 12th of january right after the 150 gold helmet competition.

PREMIERE FO
To this season SVEMO´s Snowmobile section has completed a new rule book for the class 150 gold helmet for snowmobiles. We asked Rickard Stenberg from the snowmobile section about the new rule book. Why is there a need for a rule book in 150 gold helmet class? What we´ve seen the for a while now is an increasing interest in ”exhibition races” for kids on snowmobiles in connection with snowmobile races. That´s a problem because we don´t have the class regulated in our racing rules. And therefore the kids has to drive outside the competition and without insurance that our other classes are covered by. So the most important reason to the rule book in 150 gold helmet is to protect the kids with insurance and of course making it a little bit easier for the arranger too. The second reason why we have done this is that we´re experiencing a declining interest among the younger drivers. But the interest among kids who wants to drive in 150 gold helmet is huge. The earlier the kids get interest for the sport the bigger the chance that they continue in junior class.
Who are your target group? From our side (snowmobile section) the focus is targeted at play. That will say that we want as many kids as possible to try this and have fun with a reasonable cost for the parents. The rules are designed to leave a lot of freedom to the arrangers in how they want to structure the competition. For example in wich classes they want to devide the drivers in. We don´t have an ambition that this should be like in the ISOC-series with points. As I said it should focus on fun and that everybody is a winner. And hopefully some of the kids go further towards real racing when they get older. How did you decide on the limitations? We had to have some limitaitions. We looked at the rule book for our other classes and copied parts that we wanted to use in the new 150 gold helmet too. Some are for pure protection reasons like emergency stop and the size and use of snow flap. We also wanted some limits connected to the engines. We browsed what kind of mini snowmobiles that was out in the market and then put the cc limit to 150 cc. Then you can use Kitty Cats, all the newer 120 cc machines and even the elderly Yamaha Sno Sport. Then it´s upp the arrangers to devide
OR GOLD HELMET
their classes according to age, machines or what they think is appropriate. This way we keep the cost low and allows as many as possible to be able to participate. What´s it like to bring a completely new rule book to life? Either it´s a completely new rule book or to change an existing rule book it´s never easy. Everybody has an opinion, and that´s the way it is. Our job in the snowmobile section are always trying to decide what´s good for the majority of the drivers. But when it comes to making rules for kids it´s even more sensitive. SVEMO´s child committee, race committee, board and snowmobile section has been a part in the making of the 150 gold helmet rules. I also want to declare that this is a test year for the rules. And if things doesn´t work as they should we can make some changes to the next season. Are you looking on some alternatives to mini snowmobiles? Yes we do. At the age 8-9 years the kids is starting to outgrew the mini snowmobiles. An alternative could be the 250 cc snowmobiles that CSRA in Canada is using. We also look on ISOC and how they structure age classes.
What does 150 gold helmet mean for the sport? I think it will mean a lot to the sport. If you can try the sport from early years the bigger is the chance that you get hooked. Hopefully that leads to more participators in the junior class as well as in the senior classes. What if I´m interested in arranging an 150 gold helmet race, how do I do it? The rule bok is published at the snowmobile sections web www.svemo.se/sv/Grenar/Snoskoter/ There you can find all information whether you want to arrange or participate in 150 gold helmet. If you have questions you can contact the snowmobile section directly. The best way to do that is through e-mail: snoskoter@svemo.se Do you have something to add? Nothing more than I hope that we as always going to have great days at Gräfsåsen during the event Arctic Cat Cup. I also hoping that both young and older drivers will have fun days there. A also want to praise Österersund´s SSK since you´re always are in the cutting edge when it comes to snowmobile events.
