Skykomish by Lee Meredith

Skykomish is the perfect accessory for the changeable weather of late summer and fall. Knit in a 100% wool sport-weight yarn, Skykomish is a light, warm layer that functions as both a cowl and a hood. Pop it on for adventures in the great outdoors or pair it with your favorite fall outfit for a stroll through your neighborhood. However you choose to wear it, Skykomish will be your go-to layering piece this season. This innovative cowl is knit flat in one piece. Beginning with a provisional cast on and using a pattern of cables and reverse stockinette, the piece increases in width as it grows in length. The cowl is seamed using a 3-needle bind-off and an interesting pleating technique.

Elwha by Alexa Ludeman

Elwha marries classic bottom-up raglan construction with striking cable motifs for a sweater that is as fun to knit as it is to wear. Knit in worsted-weight Rambouillet, its lofty warmth and comfortable shape are a great pairing for exploring the shorelines of lakes and rivers. The textured center cable motif evokes images of pools of flowing water while the simple side cables are like stacked tails of small fish. This pullover is knit from the bottom up. Sleeves and body are knit first then joined for the yoke. Sleeves are knit in the round from cuff to underarm. Raglan decreases are worked at four points to the neckline. Choose a size with 2 in / 5 cm of positive ease.

Twisp by Emily Wessel

Colorwork mavens and novices alike will enjoy knitting this lightweight hat. Twisp marries the warmth of stranded colorwork with a simple design for a striking, mild-weather knit. The long, ribbed brim can be worn down or folded up for extra warmth on cool days, and the geometric colorwork motif allows ample room to play with color. Knit Twisp in bold, fall colors to delight the leaf peepers in your life, or make one in the warm shades of late summer to keep in your knitting bag for capricious weather. Twisp is knit in the round from the bottom up. The brim is knit in ribbing and the body of the hat is knit in a simple colorwork pattern. Wear it with 2-3 in / 5-9 cm of negative ease for a snug fit.

Salal

by Andi Satterlund Wear Salal for pie and coffee at the diner with friends or rambling through the woods solo. The graphic lace yoke paired with simple stockinette makes Salal interesting to knit, while the ž sleeves and cropped length make it a great layering piece for mild-weather jaunts. Salal is knit seamlessly from the top down. The upper back is knit first and put on hold. Stitches for the front are picked up from the cast-on edge and knit down. The body is joined at the underarms. Sleeves are picked up and knit in the round, using short rows to shape the set-in-style sleeve caps. This cardigan fits best with 2-4 in / 5-10 cm of negative ease.

Gilia

by Cory Ellen Boberg These legwarmers will keep your ankles snug on early morning bicycle rides and lengthy hikes through evergreen forests alike. The cable and nupp pattern is evocative of cheery, late summer flora and adds interest to an otherwise simple knit. Pair Gilia with skinny jeans for a vivid pop of color or wear them peeking out of wellies while you tend the garden. Any way you wear them, Gilia will keep you toasty warm on cool days. Gilia are knit from the bottom up in the round with a cable and nupp detail. Choose a size with 4-6 in / 10-15 cm of negative ease across the widest part of your calf.

Latourell by Ruth Garcia-Alcantud

With its clean, classic shape and simple-to-knit cable motif, Latourell is a wardrobe staple you’ll reach for all season. Designed to be worn with 1-2 in / 2.5-5 cm positive ease, this pullover will keep away the chill while you explore local parks or the local farmers market for seasonal bounty. Minimal shaping and a sport-weight yarn make Latourell easy to wear and simple to knit. Latourell is knit in pieces from the bottom up and seamed. Sleeves are knit flat, seamed, and set in. Finally, stitches are picked up around the neckline and knit in the round before binding off.

Tupshin by Erin Birnel

Whether you slip your feet into boots for long hikes or prop them next to the fireplace for a night of knitting, you’ll keep your toes cozy with these wool socks. Tupshin combines the look of a traditional hiking sock with colorwork and lace elements for a knitting project with classic appeal. The colorwork pattern is reminiscent of distant mountain ranges and the lace eyelets form small peaks of their own. Tupshin features classic cuff-to-toe construction. The socks are worked from the top down with a slipped-stitch heel flap and gusset decreases. Choose a size to fit with zero ease.

Choosing a Size Stranded Magazine patterns give you the measurements of the finished item, and projects that are fitted to the body will include an ease range recommendation. Add the ease range recommendation to your own measurements, and compare them to the schematic measurements to choose a size. For example, if you have a 34 in bust and the pattern suggests 1-3 in of negative ease, your ideal size would have a finished bust measurement somewhere in the 31-33 in range. Ease is the difference between a garment’s measurements and your own measurements. A sweater with positive ease is bigger in circumference than the wearer, and a sweater with negative ease is smaller in circumference than the wearer. A sweater with zero ease has the same circumference as the wearer. Negative ease makes for a snug-fitting sweater, but knits are stretchy so negative ease isn’t restrictive like you might imagine it to be. Positive ease is less form fitting and tends to drape over the body. To get an idea of what kind of ease you’re used to wearing, take your own measurements, and then measure your favorite store-bought sweaters. If your favorite sweaters typically are larger than your own measurements, you like positive ease. If

they’re typically smaller than your own measurements, you like negative ease. It’s important to note that the suggested ease isn’t universal throughout a garment. You want more ease through the armhole, less across the shoulders, and so on. For garment patterns, the suggested ease is generally the suggested ease through the bust or torso of the garment. With that in mind, study the schematic to make sure that your measurements correspond nicely with the measurements for the size you think you’d like to knit. For a fitted sweater with set-in sleeves, the cross shoulder measurement typically should closely match your own, and the armholes should be deeper than your own measurement. Make sure all of the measurements for a size will work well on you before you commit to knitting a whole sweater based on them. You may need to make custom modifications to get the best fit.
